Plot: After decades of lying about a fake friend named Ricky Stanicky, who they use as a get-out-of-jail-free card, three buddies are caught in a lie and have to produce a real version of their imaginary friend to their families. They hired an Atlantic City low-life (John Cena) to pretend to be Stanicky, but he enjoys playing the part so much that he refuses to leave town.

Well, it took Peter Farrelly exactly two movies to go from winning Best Picture back to making broad comedies about dog boners; I guess some people never change. Of course, “Green Book” was only about two dog boners away from being as dumb — or dumber — than a Farrelly classic like “There’s Something About Mary” to begin with, but even so, the funniest thing about “Ricky Stanicky” might be how recently its director was holding an Oscar on the stage of the Dolby Theater.
Actually, no: The funniest thing about “Ricky Stanicky” is the sight of John Cena dressed as Alice Cooper and singing “Sploooooooge out. My. Penis” to the tune of “School’s Out” (for summer), which is one of the signature “jizz jams” his character performs at the semen-themed musical revue he launched after his dog-fucking show was canceled because “Atlantic City went all woke.”
Anyway, those are the two funny things about “Ricky Stanicky.

Peter Farrelly’s Ricky Stanicky concerns a trio of best friends who create an imaginary person to blame for their misdeeds. As the years go by, Dean (Zac Efron), Jt (Andrew Santino), and Wes (Jermaine Fowler) continue using “Ricky” as an excuse any time they want to skip, say, a family gathering or sneak out on a boys’ weekend. In such moments, they simply tell their significant others that Ricky really needs them right now.
That’s a solid enough setup for a film, a kind of coming-of-middle-age comedy in the vein of Jeff Tomsic’s Tag, where the characters’ commitment to a childhood tradition ends up jeopardizing their adult lives in the process. But where the antics of Tag’s characters effectively captured the stupid joy of acting like your younger self while hanging out with your oldest friends, Ricky Stanicky is stupid in a much less joyful way.

Dumb And Dumber’s Peter Farrelly’s latest film is Ricky Stanicky for Amazon Prime Video. Here’s the trailer and some details…
The Farrelly Brothers will forever be synonymous with slapstick, gross-out comedies like Dumb and Dumber and There’s Something About Mary, both of which are, gag for gag, among the funniest films of the 1990s.
Apart from belated sequel Dumb and Dumber To in 2014, the brothers have concentrated on solo projects. In recent years, Peter Farrelly has directed acclaimed 2018 film Green Book, while Bobby directed underrated 2023 comedy Champions.
Peter’s latest film is Ricky Stanicky, a comedy which sounds a bit like Drop Dead Fred or Ted. The synopsis reads as follows:

John Cena is the best friend whom Zac Efron never had in the first trailer for Prime Video’s comedy Ricky Stanicky.
Peter Farrelly directed the Amazon MGM Studios feature that begins streaming March 7. The movie follows Dean (Efron) and two lifelong friends who invent an imaginary pal named Ricky Stanicky as someone to blame for a childhood prank gone wrong. The three buddies continue to attribute their mishaps over the years to the nonexistent friend until finally deciding to hire a struggling actor known as “Rock Hard” Rod (Cena) to portray Ricky when their partners want to meet him.
“Ricky Stanicky isn’t real,” Efron tells Cena, who appears to be taking the gig too far. This leads Cena to explain why he wants to continue playing the part: “My job sucked, I had no friends. But now I have all those things.”

John Cena (Peacemaker) stars as a failed actor who agrees to take on the most challenging (and freeing) role of his life in Prime Video’s Ricky Stanicky. The nearly three-minute trailer introduces a trio of best friends who’ve blamed everything wrong on their imaginary best friend. Enter Cena as that imaginary friend.
Zac Efron (The Iron Claw), Andrew Santino (Dave), and Jermaine Fowler (Sorry to Bother You) star as the BFFs. The cast also includes Lex Scott Davis, Anja Savcic, Jeff Ross, and William H. Macy.

Peter Farrelly made his name in Hollywood by directing raunchy comedies such as "Dumb and Dumber" and "There's Something About Mary" alongside his brother, Bobby Farrelly. Since going solo, however, Peter Farrelly has been making more serious fare such as the Oscar-winning "Green Book." But now, he's back with an R-rated comedy in the form of "Ricky Stanicky." With an A-list cast and a ridiculous premise, it looks like a throwback in every conceivable way. Check out the trailer above for yourself.
Here, Farrelly is re-teaming with Zac Efron, who worked with him on "The Greatest Beer Run Ever." While Efron is coming off of the most serious performance of his career in "The Iron Claw," this sees him going back to his comedic roots, having previously starred in films like "Neighbors" and "Dirty Grandpa." Meanwhile, John Cena is getting to flex his comedic chops as well as the titular character.

What happens when a decades-old white lie starts snowballing out of control? Well, Zac Efron, Jermaine Fowler, Andrew Santino, and John Cena are all about to find out in Peter Farrelly’s new comedy film, Ricky Stanicky, which shared its first trailer today.
Set to premiere on Prime Video on March 7th, Ricky Stanicky tells the story of three longtime friends who have invented an imaginary character, named “Ricky Stanicky,” to strategically blame their misbehavior on. When their latest Stanicky antic doesn’t go as planned, though, their families begin to question what’s really going on. Hoping to quell any suspicions, the three come up with a solution: hire an actor to pretend to be Stanicky.
Landing on washed-up, X-rated, rock ‘n’ roll impersonator, Rock Hard Rod (Cena), as their Stanicky, the three’s plan seems to work at first. But as the uber-charismatic — albeit, brazen — Rock Hard Rod gets a new job,...

Everyone agrees that white lies can be harmless. Sometimes, we tell them to keep a person’s feelings from getting hurt or to prevent ourselves from getting into too much trouble. However, white lies are slippery, especially if you’ve been telling the same one for years. White lies can evolve to become one of the biggest mistakes you’ll ever make. In the end, it’s best not to tell them. In Peter Farrelly‘s Ricky Stanicky trailer, three friends invent a friend who conveniently pulls them away from their lives whenever they need a break from reality. Unfortunately, their lie is getting called out, and they need someone to become the person they’ve been lying about for years.

The Efron-assaince is still in full swing. Zac Efron continues his career comeback on the heels of his buzzy turn in critically acclaimed “The Iron Claw” by teaming up again with his “The Greatest Beer Run Ever” director Peter Farrelly. Yet this time, Efron and Farrelly are both returning to their comedy roots with the Prime Video feature “Ricky Stanicky.”
Farrelly directs from a screenplay he co-wrote with Jeff Bushell, Brian Jarvis, James Lee Freeman, Pete Jones, and Mike Cerrone. The film follows a trio of childhood best friends who long ago devised the perfect (and imaginary) scapegoat pal to blame all their wild adventures on. However, now that they are adults, they actually need to answer for their immaturity … by hiring a make-believe friend (John Cena) to fill that fake role.

Exclusive: In a Deadline interview this morning, writer-director Peter Farrelly revealed he is planning an early 2023 start for Ricky Stanicky, his first R-rated comedy in years. He is in talks with Zac Efron and John Cena, with the latter playing the title role. Farrelly cautions that deals aren’t done, but he is sparked to move forward on a film he’s been working on through the making of Best Picture Oscar winner Green Book, and The Greatest Beer Run Ever. The latter has its world premiere Tuesday at TIFF, where Farrelly launched Green Book five years ago.

Believe it or not, but James Franco doesn't always do everything he winds up committed to, and a couple years back you might recall he signed up to star in "Ricky Stanicky." He had just wrapped "127 Hours," but even so, the movie seemed a long way off and it seems it wound up stalling, even though the script placed on the 2010 Black List. But alas, it has come back to life with a slightly surprising new star. Jim Carrey has now boarded the movie, and, even more, his old pal Steve Oedekerk (the guy who wrote and directed "Ace Ventura: When Nature Calls," and penned "Bruce Almighty") will direct the flick. And oh yeah, Oedekerk will also rewrite the script by Jeff Bushell, that centers on a couple of pals who use a made-up friend as a means to get away from their spouses, for nearly two decades. However, when...

It’s been a while since we’ve heard anything about comedy script Ricky Stanicky. Back in 2010, James Franco agreed to star in the proposed film, but has since dropped out to make 73,000 other movies and write some poetry or whatever. Things appear to be moving again, as Steve Oedekerk is on to direct and has lured old mucker Jim Carrey for the lead.Summit Entertainment is backing this one, which has a script by Jeff Bushell and follows three male friends who invent the titular Mr Stanicky as a way to get out of family time and to explain away any tricky situations. For those of you who know your Oscar Wilde, think Mr Bunbury in The Importance Of Being Earnest.Yet after 20 years of this ruse apparently working, trouble strikes when their other halves demand to meet the mystery man, and they must scramble to find an actor that can portray him.

Exclusive: Nickelodeon is betting big on Lucas Cruikshank. In a pretty quick turnaround, I’ve learned that the network has picked up comedy pilot Marvin, Marvin toplined by Fred star Cruikshank to series with a whopping 26-episode order. The network is expected to make the announcement at its upfront presentation later today. The series order comes four weeks into the run of Fred: The Show, a live-action, short-form comedy series created by and starring YouTube standout Cruikshank as his signature character Fred Figglehorn. I hear that Nickelodeon is extending that series of 11-minute segments with a new 28-episode order on top of the original 21-episode pickup. Additionally, the network is working on a third Fred movie with Cruikshank following the success of the first two. Marvin, Marvin, created by Jon Ross (10 Things I Hate About You), stars Cruikshank as a alien teen living with a human family, while trying to fit into life on earth.

Every year, film executive Franklin Leonard releases his list, called The Black List, of most-liked unproduced screenplays in Hollywood. This year's list was compiled from the suggestions of 290 film executives, each of whom picked up to ten of their favorite scripts. Since the list started in 2004, many screenplays ended up being turned into films. In 2005, two of the top three scripts were "Lars and the Real Girl" which was nominated for Best Original Screenplay Oscar, and "Juno" which actually won the Oscar. The Black List started in 2005 when Franklin Leonard was working for Leonardo DiCaprio's Appian Way production company. Leonard was getting drowned in sub-par spec scripts, so he sent an e-mail out to his industry contacts looking for the best unproduced scripts out there. The 2005 Black List and the 2006 Black List were undeniably important in getting a fresh batch of writers on the Hollywood scene. Since then, too many people know about the party and the studio system has learned that people are paying attention. That means that increasingly, scripts have been lobbied into the Black List. [Note: I have no actual evidence I would be able to share, disclose or show you that proves this, so file that assertion under: "Things Dave thinks and gets to write because he's squatted on that soapbox long enough to get squatter's rights."]This year: the majority of the Black List Top Ten has already been sold or optioned. I'm not sure how helpful it is to make a list of good In Production scripts. Certainly less helpful to writer's churning out material that keeps getting passed over (or people who have Not starred in Prison Break...

Back in 2004, a list was compiled of the best unproduced screenplays in Hollywood of that year. This came to be known as The Black List. It was all started by a young executive at Leonardo DiCaprio’s production company Appian Way, who polled 90+ peers to send him their 10 favorite, new, unproduced screenplays to read over the holidays. It has since become a tradition at the end of every year, in December, to release this list, which is voted on by a group of individuals in the entertainment industry from producer assistants, talent agency individuals, and many people involved with film development all the way up to VP's.
The 2010 Black List is here, and thanks to Deadline we have the list of best unproduced screenplays. Most of the scripts we've heard of, many of them are in production, some have already wrapped filming, they just wont be released until next year.

Every year, studio executive Franklin Leonard compiles the “Black List,” a collection of the best unproduced screenplays as voted on by 300 execs and high-level assistants. The 2010 list is the sixth of its kind to bring additional awareness to Hollywood’s hottest scripts.
Topping the list this year is Wes Jones’ College Republicans, a Social Network-esque story (read my script review here) about the underhanded election of Karl Rove to a National College Republican seat, managed by strategy wunderkind Lee Atwater. Shia Labeouf is attached to play Atwater and Paul Dano as Rove. Previous Black List leaders include 2008’s The Beaver, which became a long-delayed film directed by Jodie Foster and starring Mel Gibson, and 2009’s The Muppet Man, which remains on the shelf.

The Black List has been released. The annual list is compiled with a poll of 300 (up from last year's 250) development executives and high-level assistants, and contains a ranking of the hot screenplays making the rounds in Hollywoodland, which were written in, or are somehow uniquely associated with, 2010 and will not be released in theaters during this calendar year. Basically, the black list contains the hottest projects in Hollywood that you haven't heard of yet. Note: The headline is a slightly inaccurate, because a lot of these screenplays have already been acquired (six of the top ten listed), a bunch are in production now, and some have even finished production. One of this year's top ten screenplays, J.C. Chandor's Margin Call, about the last 24 hours at now-defunct investment bank Lehman Brothers is already in the can and set to premiere at the 2011 Sundance Film Festival with Chandor at the helm...

Frank Leonard is the most popular man in Hollywood today. This fine December day marks the release of the 6th annual Black List, a ranked collection of the top un-produced screenplays in the town, compiled by Leonard. Last year the top script was The Muppet Man from Christopher Weekes about “the life and times of the late Jim Henson.” Coming in second was Aaron Sorkin‘s The Social Network script, which is a current frontrunner to sweep the Oscars. The year before was The Beaver, now starring Mel Gibson and set for a release in 2011.
The top one this year, College Republicans, has Shia Labeouf and Paul Dano attached. Casting nibbles for your warm weekend, courtesy of The Hollywood Reporter:
Sorry Gary Oldman fans -- this isn't some meaty gig for the irreplaceable actor. Following voice work in Planet 51 and A Christmas Carol, Oldman has joined the voice cast of the 3D sequel Kung Fu Panda: The Kaboom of Doom, which is set for release next summer. He will voice Peacock, some helpful dude who's "more than he seems." Let's hope his work in the upcoming Easter Sixteen will make up for the side gigs and voice work. (I'm ignoring The Book of Eli.) I miss meaty, jaw-dropping dramatic Oldman work.
James Franco, meanwhile, is trucking full-steam ahead. Aside from landing the starring Apes gig, he will play the title character in Ricky Stanicky ... kind of. An R-rated comedy spec from Jeff Bushell (Beverly Hills Chihuahua), the film will be an ensemble comedy like The Hangover, about a...

Performance artist James Franco is a very busy, busy, busy man. He recently completed a documentary about hosting “Saturday Night Live,” as well as production on Danny Boyle’s drama 127 Hours about mountain climber Aron Rolston who has to cut his arm off to live. Not to mention, he’s appearing in the following films: Howl, Eat Pray Love, and, Your Highness and not to mention, a second stint on “General Hospital”. Well, now add Fox’s prequel, Rise Of The Apes to that ever growing list.
Mike Fleming is reporting that Franco will play the scientist who through his genetic experiments leads to talking apes and well, the Planet Of The Apes. Rupert Wyatt will direct from a screenplay written by Rick Jaffa & Amanda Silver. Peter Jackson’s Weta will be handle the special effects. Fox has penciled a June 24th, 2011 release date for the film.

James Franco has an interesting career, starting out -- more or less -- as a regular on "Freaks and Geeks," before becoming that cast's first breakout star by appearing in all three Spider-Man movies. Outside of Spider-Man and a modicum of commercial success with Pineapple Express and critical success with Milk, however, Franco's resume is littered with films that range from the terrible (Flyboys, Annapolis, City by the Sea) to the forgettable (In the Valley of Elah, The Dead Girl, Tristan + Isolde). Lately, he's been filling his time with a stint on "General Hospital," and a decent documentary about the behind-the-scenes machinations of "Saturday Night Live."
It looks like he's due now for the second phase of his career as a more solid comedic presence and, perhaps, an action star of sorts. His participation in two projects was announced yesterday. The bigger one is that he's now been cast as...

Actor James Franco, best known for playing Harry Osborn and his Goblin alter-ego in the "Spider-Man" movies, has become the first human cast in Rupert ( The Escapist ) Wyatt's Rise of the Apes , which is scheduled to start filming on July 5 for its planned June 24, 2011 release date. Franco won't be donning any make-up or fur as he will in fact be playing a human, essentially a scientist who is pivotal in the war between the humans and the apes. We can probably expect a lot more casting announced in the next few weeks leading to the start of filming. Earlier today, it was also revealed that Franco will star in Summit Entertainment's comedy Ricky Stanicky . Written by Jeff Bushell, the film centers on three male friends who have used an invented friend, Ricky Stanicky,...

James Franco was just cast in the Planet of the Apes prequel, which instantly makes me a bit more interested in that movie, but in the meantime he's also booked a smaller picture. Franco will star in Ricky Stanicky, a comedy by Jeff Bushell, writer of Beverly Hills Chihuahua. That dubious credit aside, the spec is intentioned as an R-rated ensemble comedy. And while that means The Hangover is inevitably invoked in the description, the story is about "three teens [who] pull a prank and burn down a house in their neighborhood. They create a fake person to take the blame -- Ricky Stanicky did it! Twenty years later, we see that the three guys have been using this alibi to get out of every uncomfortable situation in life. When their wives force them to set up a meeting with Stanicky, they hire an actor (Franco)." Ok, not actually a bad...

James Franco is tooling up quite the eclectic CV these days, and in between blockbusters, indie dramas and, er, soap opera (no, really), he’s also finding time for another new comedy role in Ricky Stanicky, which Twilight team Summit is planning to finance.Deadline reports that he’ll play the titular role in the film, which sees two best mates inventing a fake friend who provides the perfect excuse for whenever they need time away from their wives. Trouble is, their other halves decide they want to meet this mysterious mate at an upcoming party, leading to a desperate scramble to find someone. Cue them hiring an actor (Franco) to fill the role. While it’s definitely a high concept comedy idea, and our Panic Radar is beeping upon hearing that Beverly Hills Chihuahua writer Jeff Bushell is behind the script, we’ve got more faith in Franco’s taste.

Blu-Ray Rating: 3.0/5.0 Chicago – Disney’s “Beverly Hills Chihuahua”, now on Blu-Ray and DVD, is so generic and disposable that it’s easy for an adult to forget they’re watching it while it’s playing. It’s one of those movies that appeals to the little ones because talking animals naturally do so, but so little was done beyond the casting and the concept that adults are going to get bored quickly. As for the Blu-Ray, Disney rarely produces anything less-than-stellar for their family films and “Bhc” doesn’t break the pattern.
Walt Disney family movies are licenses to print money. “Beverly Hills Chihuahua” cost barely a thing to make and has grossed over $135 million worldwide and that’s without the mint it’s likely to make on the home market. Disney has developed a pattern of releasing only a few movies a year and they’re almost all guaranteed hits.

Facts of interest: Gosnell also directed the two disastrous "Scooby-Doo" flicks.
The plot: When a rich chihuahua ends up astray in Mexico, the courageous Papi heads out to rescue her from danger and bring her back home safe.
Our thoughts: Aren’t you tired of watching talking animals getting in trouble in every other animated or live-action family film? I would tolerate it if the story changed a little every once in a while, but here lately, I really feel like seeing the same old routine over and over again.
