Skating Icons, Celebs Congratulate Nathan Chen on Historic 6-Quad Skate: 'This Is Who We Waited For'
After back-to-back disappointments during his first two Olympic skates, Nathan Chen delivered a jaw-dropping six quads during his final Olympic outing Saturday morning (Friday evening stateside) — in a performance that had the skating world dizzy with excitement as the kudos poured in on Twitter.
“What?!?!?! Completely inhuman display of ridiculousness!!! 6 quads…beautiful skating. Guys beyond. Congratulations @nathanwchen” gold medalist Kristi Yamaguchi tweeted alongside her handwritten scorecard of his performance.
Two-time Olympic medalist Michelle Kwan put it even more succinctly: “Holy Quads.”

Not many people get to watch a biopic and be surprised when they see something on screen that happened when they were in the room. For announcer Al Michaels, watching the Tonya Harding movie “I, Tonya” brought back a vivid memory from 27 years ago.
At the Television Critics Association press tour this week, promoting the upcoming Super Bowl Lii on NBC, Michaels took a quick moment to reflect about being present for Harding’s landmark triple axel jump that features prominently in the film.
“I was watching ‘I, Tonya’ the other night. I’d forgotten I’d announced the triple axel at the Target Center in 1991,” Michaels said. “I’m going, ‘Wait a second. I did that!’ Then I went on YouTube and YouTube has the actual call. It brought back the memory of doing it with Peggy Fleming and Dick Button.”
Sure enough, here’s the original moment, in its full VHS glory:

Decades before Serena Williams was firing off first serves and Lindsey Vonn was shushing down mountaintops, figure skater Dorothy Hamill was the biggest deal in women's sports. ABC has been running their new reality show on Monday nights, Skating with the Stars. With a similar format, it took over for the network's immensely popular Dancing with the Stars in the Monday night timeslot. Last night, the competition came to a close with actress Rebecca Budig taking home the golden skates trophy. Will she be the series' first and last winner? Does ABC have another big hit on their hands or a disappointment that will be cancelled and quickly forgotten?
Skating with the Stars pits teams of professional skaters and "celebrities" together as they perform routines on ice. They are judged and scored by Johnny Weir, Dick Button and Laurie Ann Gibson. Those scores are combined with votes from viewers and the team with the lowest total leaves the competition each week. Vernon Kay hosts with Tanith Belbin providing color commentary.

Something surprising finally happened on "Skating With the Stars" -- and it wasn't just the fact that this apparently isn't the last episode.
That's right. The "Swts" finale is a two-nighter, and one of the competition's early favorites won't be in attendance "Who?" you ask. Well, you can plainly see in the headline, but let's just run through the penultimate routines in the spirit of protocol.
The Group Dance:
Somehow amateurish figure skating is infinitely more digestible when it's set to Christmas music, but isn't everything? The three finalists spinning in circles to "All I Want For Christmas Is You" was sweet -- but it didn't rock the score boat. Rebecca distinguished herself from runner-up Jonny Moseley, who was just marginally better than Bethenny Frankel.
Rebecca Budig and Fred Palascak (66 out of 70)
Though we'd object that it was a tad too schmaltzy, Budig's free-skate was an appropriate culmination of her incredible 10-week progress.

Welcome back to Skating With the Stars, the low-rent-verging-on-homeless version of Dancing With the Stars! ‘Tis the season for not being able to get the cave-troll growl of British host Vernon Kay’s “liiiiive.” (compared to Tom Bergeron’s hearty “Liiiiiiiive!”) out of your rotting brain, no matter how hard you bang your head against the ice! Week 2 taught us that celebrity carnage didn't bring us the happiness we expected, but Week 3 reveals that it certainly makes for compelling TV.
We're already at the halfway mark on "Skating With the Stars," and it's clearly taking its toll on the cast.
Brandon Mychal Smith left rehearsals in an ambulance earlier on show day, right around the time Jonny Moseley's partner Brooke Castile took a skate to the hand, slicing her finger to the bone.
ABC made us sweat out the episode to see if Smith would make it back in time to perform (he didn't), while Castile, in a show of super trooper-dom, skated with her hand in a brace.
So what do we with our stars in stitches and slings? Make 'em jump! The Week 3 challenge requires a leap from the ice and a one-foot landing. Let's see who was up to the task.

['Skating With the Stars' - 'Season 1, Episode 2']
In the second week of 'Skating With the Stars,' there were a few falls as skaters added tricky moves like fancy footwork and lifts, and the first star was eliminated.
The judges attempted to figure out tough moves of their own, like getting the correct score paddle. Veteran skater Dick Button seemed to have trouble with his paddles, saying "8" but flashing a "7" to Jonny Moseley.
The confusion continued as clueless host Vernon Kay's comment on the mix-up was also inaccurate. Oops. Kay also referred to Vince Neil's partner Jennifer Wester, as "Brooke," (Jonny's partner) before correcting himself. Hmm, does he realize this show is live?
Read on to see who went home and who's still skating.

We'd been waiting and waiting for the carnage to begin on "Skating With the Stars," and when it finally did... it left us feeling empty inside.
Other people's misfortunes normally give us such pleasure, but there was no laughing at Sean Young or Vince Neil when they came crashing down on their famous behinds in this second round of "Swts."
So what did we learn this week aside from the fact that we just might have a soul? Well, for one, this show is markedly more entertaining now that they've ripped off the broadcast band-aid. Once it became clear that collective skepticism couldn't cause the studio to burst into flames, everyone seemed a lot more comfortable the second time around -- including Mr. Dick Button, whose mixed metaphors make us wish we could adopt him from the grandpa orphanage.

I discovered one thing while watching ABC's Skating with the Stars last night. The sound I kept hearing was not metal scraping ice, it was reality TV scraping the bottom of the barrel.
Actually, that may be a bit unfair. Skating is really no worse than the show that preceded it, but this whole " ______ with the Stars" genre needs to be nipped in the bud.
At the very least, they need to look outside these boring challenges, and offer up something unexpected. For instance, Red Light/Green Light with the Stars, or Chainsaw Juggling with the Stars.
As for Skating, it was pretty much what it was expected to be, a low-rent copy of Dancing with the Stars, with one notable exception.
The fabulous judge Johnny Weir.

Skating With the Stars debuted last night, and although British host Vernon Kay (no Tom Bergeron) did his best to repeatedly assure us that this was the most dangerous live competition on TV — “The performances will be just as explosive, the costumes even tinier, but there is an added element of danger — razor-sharp blades of steel strapped to the feet of six very nervous stars!” — no one even fell during their debut performances. At least we got some serious spills in the training montages. (Vince Neil fell more than all the other contestants combined, we were told.) After all, Kay promised,...

If nothing else, the costumes will be amazing. Ever-ambitiously attired figure skater Johnny Weir is joining ABC's "Skating with the Stars" as a judge, the network announced Monday. Also holding up numbers and dishing constructive criticism will be two-time Olympic champion and Emmy winning broadcaster Dick Button, as well as Laurieann Gibson, who has handled choreopgraphy for Lady Gaga, among others. ABC touts the 26-year-old Weir, star of the Sundance Channel's "Be Good Johnny Weir," as "the skating world's most unpredictable star." Johnny Weir hasn't been onscreen in a non-blading capacity since the Sundance doc Be Good, Johnny Weir, so I guess he figured now was the time. He announced earlier this season that he would be taking some time off from competing to focus his attention elsewhere, and now we know where. Reality TV!
The Olympian figure skater, billed by ABC as "the skating world's most unpredictable star," is slated to host Skating With the Stars alongside two-time Olympian and longtime broadcast announcer Dick Button. The third judge will be Laurieann Gibson, who has choreographed routines for Lady Gaga, Michael Jackson, Beyonce.

Johnny Weir, possibly the most controversial Olymic skater since Tonya Harding, has been announced as a judge for ABC's first season of "Skating With the Stars." Weir will be joined on the judges panel by choreographer Laurieann Gibson, and Olympian Dick Button.
In its press release, ABC refers to Weir, who learned to skate at age 12 on frozen cornfields behind his home, as "skating's most unpredictable star," so they're clearly hoping for some wacky antics there. Gibson is best known for her pop choreography, having worked with Michael Jackson, Alicia Keys, Dixie Chicks, Lady Gaga, and Beyonce.
Button is now a beloved skating commentator, but once was a force to be reckoned with on the ice. "Button is the only skater to ever achieve what could be considered a "grand slam" of figure skating, having captured the United States, North American, European, World and Olympic championships all in the same...

Okay, it’s easy to look at the roster of “pros” on ABC’s Skating With the Stars and dismiss them. But ask yourself this: How many of the pros’ names did you recognize on Dancing With the Stars that first season? It’s just because you — especially those who enjoy PopWatch on Ice coverage — can actually rattle off some famous figure skaters that you’re questioning these pros’ abilities before even seeing them in action. (That was a tougher spin than a Biellmann!) Here are the pairings. The show premieres Nov. 22.

With a little more than a week to go until the premiere of 'Skating With the Stars,' ABC has announced the host, color commentator and professional skating partners of the celebrity contestants.
British TV presenter Vernon Kay will handle hosting duties, while Olympic ice dancer Tanith Belbin, who earned a silver medal at the 2006 Turin games, will serve as color commentator. If celebs like Bethenny Frankel and Vince Neil thought they were going to have it easy competing on Skating with the Stars, they're in for a surprise - especially when it comes to judge and former Olympian Johnny Weir. "I'm not going to be soft on [the contestants]," Weir told People Tuesday at the launch of the Kardashian pre-paid Mastercard at Pacha N.Y.C. "I suppose I'd be Simon Cowell, but with a lot of Paula [Abdul] underneath." Furthermore, the 26-year-old U.S. figure skating champ says he'll be a stickler for details. "I'm all for the theatrics and the beauty of figure skating,...

"The View's" Elisabeth Hasselbeck latest career move has left her a little bruised with a pulled muscle "somewhere," she tells Zap2it.
The talk show host took a tumble (or four) on "The View" Friday (March 19) morning promoting her hosting gig on "Thin Ice", the all-new reality show premiering on ABC that night. "Thin Ice" judge Kristi Yamaguchi's quick-and-dirty skating lesson might have left Hasselbeck a bit bruised up, but that didn't put a damper on the talk show host's excitement over scoring this ice-bound opportunity.
"There's no way I couldn't be a part of this," Hasselbeck says.
Hasselbeck and four-time world champion Kurt Browning will co-host the two-day ABC show featuring 10 pro skaters paired as five couples competing for $220,000 in prize money. The scoring from the judges (including Yamaguchi, Katarina Witt and Dick Button) will count for 50 percent, while audience participation makes up the other half.

Do you think Elisabeth will “survive” her first ice skating lesson with Dancing With The Stars alum Kristi Yamaguchi on ABC’s new show Thin Ice?
Olympic gold medalist and Season 6 Dancing With the Stars champ Kristi Yamaguchi is putting away her dancing shoes and returning to the ice for ABC’s newest show Thin Ice – but this time she gets to be the boss and do the teaching, not the practicing!
And guess who she’ll be teaching? None other than Elisabeth Hasselbeck! The controversial The View co-host will test her skills on the ice in an episode airing March 19th. Considering the mom of three finished fourth place in Survivor: The Australian Outback, we think Elisabeth may have a few tricks up her sleeve!
Elisabeth, 32 is also playing host on the show alongside figure skater Kurt Browning; Kristi, 38, will act as a judge alongside professional figure skaters Katarina Witt and Dick Button.

Last night was the Oscars which were, by tradition, too long, not particularly funny, and predictable. I mean, it was wonderful that The Hurt Locker and Kathryn Bigelow won, but it wasn't surprising. Surprising would have been if Quentin Tarantino had taken directing for Inglourious Basterds and District 9 had won for Best Picture. This year did manage to feature one of the few Oscar montages I've ever heard people say they liked, in the form of the John Hughes tribute, but then foisted interpretive dance on us and kept up with the incredibly misguided "half an hour of actors telling other actors what awesome actors they are" method of introducing the Best Actor and Actress categories. I just feel like the Oscars overall are a huge time sink, they lasted three and a half hours. Where did that time go? They didn't even perform best songs, there was no...

Details are beginning to emerge about ABC's live two-night figure skating competition Thin Ice airing March 19 and March 21. Today, it was announced that Canada's Joannie Rochette, who brought us to tears with the courage she showed competing in Vancouver and earning a bronze medal after her mother's sudden death, will make a special appearance on the first evening to skate a tribute to her mom. Elisabeth Hasselbeck, who'll host the event with Canada's four-time World Champion Kurt Browning, told reporters today that like everyone, she was glued to the TV during Rochette's performances at the Olympics. "I didn't know I...

The U.S. Olympic Figure Skating Team is now complete. Over the weekend, Rachael Flatt earned the women's title at the U.S. Championships and will head to Vancouver along with Mirai Nagasu. Meryl Davis and Charlie White took the ice dancing crown, defeating rivals Tanith Belbin and Ben Agosto, the 2006 Olympic silver medalists, for the first time. They'll be joined by a third team, Emily Samuelson and Evan Bates. Let's break this down. I know we're excited that the U.S. has two couples who could conceivably win the U.S.'s first gold medal in ice dancing — Scott Hamilton all but said,...

I enjoy a good figure-skating special as much as the next person, but I can't decide how I feel about ABC's Thin Ice, which will air over two nights this March. The View's Elisabeth Hasselbeck and four-time world champion Kurt Browning will host the competition, which will pair up 12 of "the world's greatest pro figure skaters" to perform two-minute routines. To add drama, skaters will come from all four disciplines — ladies, men, pairs, and dance — but no pairs or dance veteran will be coupled with his or her current partner. The only rule is they must entertain us. Judging...
