Roberto Andò on Connie Nielsen's character Claire: "I based her on someone like J.K. Rowling but also on others who have become hugely wealthy through their writing" Photo: Anne-Katrin Titze
At his hotel on Central Park South, director Roberto Andò discussed with me the connections to Alfred Hitchcock's I Confess and Torn Curtain in his latest film, which character was inspired by Jk Rowling, the majestic location where he filmed, and how "evil serves no purpose."
The Confessions (Le Confessioni), co-written by Angelo Pasquini, shot by Maurizio Calvesi, and starring Toni Servillo (Paolo Sorrentino's Oscar-winning The Great Beauty and Andò's Viva La Libertà) has an exceptional ensemble cast including Connie Nielsen (Patty Jenkins's Wonder Woman), Marie-Josée Croze (John Michael McDonagh's Calvary), Daniel Auteuil (Michael Haneke's Caché), Moritz Bleibtreu (Tom Tykwer's Run Lola Run), Lambert Wilson (Jérôme Salle's L'Odyssée), Pierfrancesco Favino (Roger Michell...

Loose Cannons/Mine Vaganti
Director: Ferzan Ozpetek
Writtem by Ivan Cotroneo & Ferzan Ozpetek
Italy, 2010
Ferzan Ozpetek’s comedy drama Loose Cannons springs a few surprises – not least the long-forgotten voices of Spanish disco duo Baccara on the soundtrack. The dubious musical selections sound a jarring note in what is otherwise a witty and well-crafted tale of dysfunction within a bourgeois Italian family. To borrow that memorable last line from one of the greatest screen comedies: “Nobody’s perfect.”
Tommaso Cantone (Riccardo Scamarcio) and his elder brother Antonio (Alessandro Preziosi) are about to take over the reins of the family’s pasta business in southern Italy. But Tommaso, a writer who now lives in Rome, is determined to go his own way. He confides to his brother that he plans to come out to his relatives at an important dinner that evening. In the ultimate act of filial betrayal, Antonio steals...

With a family like this, who needs enemies? As the film opens into the lush countryside of Puglia, Italy and the cozy chattering of the lovingly offbeat Cantone family the audience knows this is going to be a feast of cinematography. Perhaps an Italian version of .My Big Fat Greek Wedding.. Only this will be better since the sets, scenery, food and wine are as good as they get. Director Ferzan Ozpetek Cinematography is by Maurizio Calvesi, previously nominated for both the Italian Golden Globe and David di Donatello (similar to American Oscar) Awards. The photography takes us up and down the most marvelously ancient and decrepit staircases, through wavy and aged windows with painstakingly hand carved frames, crumbling...
