Andorra has added Guy Pearce, Vanessa Redgrave and Eamon Farren to its ranks, with Clive Owen adopting a new, supporting role as a result.
Scheduling conflicts are to blame for the switcheroo, meaning that it is now Guy Pearce who will take point in the lead role of Alexander Fox, a decorated bookseller who seeks pastures anew following a devastating personal tragedy. In light of Pearce’s casting, Deadline has confirmed Owen will now play the part of Mr. Dent, who shares a volatile secret with his wife (Toni Collette).
In terms of Redgrave and Farren’s characters, we understand the former has come aboard as Mrs Reinhardt, a potential thorn in Fox’s side, while Farren had landed the part of an emissary from his distant past. Elsewhere, the cast of Andorra also touts The Fall star Gillian Anderson, Joanna Lumley and Riccardo Scamarcio. Fred Schepisi is the director behind the lens,...

When I saw the chance to cover the 8th Annual Austin Polish Film Festival and Poster Exhibit, I jumped at it mainly because of a Roman Polanski documentary that was slated to screen. While I knew the Austin Polish Society was a thriving organization here in Austin, my knowledge of the country itself is limited to school history books. I took my lack of information as a blessing in this case, as I went into the three-day festival ready to let the collection of Polish filmmakers and their differing views on their land and countrymen wash over me.
Friday night was geared towards young Polish filmmakers. Two in particular, Julia Kolberger and Kuba Gryzewski, both graduates of Polish film schools, each exhibited two of their short films.

#60. Someday This Pain Will Be Useful To You - Roberto Faenza I'd normally wouldn't associate a veteran Italian filmmaker such as Roberto Faenza (see pic above) with the festival - but this shot in NYC, coming-of-age indie drama based on the novel by the same name (Someday This Pain Will Be Useful To You) features a mix of the next generation of actors (Toby Regbo and Deborah Ann Woll) along with some stellar actresses in the biz (Ellen Burstyn, Marcia Gay Harden) and is backed by producers who've been to the fest with some recent indie items Allen Bain (The Missing Person) and Ron Stein (The Romantics). Potential Films invites you to The City of Your Final Destination.
Based on the novel by Peter Cameron, James Ivory’s The City of Your Final Destination stars Anthony Hopkins, Laura Linney and Charlotte Gainsbourg.
28-year-old Kansas University doctoral student Omar Razaghi has been awarded a grant to write the biography of Latin American writer Jules Gund. When Gund’s estate unexpectedly denies Omar authorisation, Omar is urged by his girlfriend to travel to Uruguay and petition the executor to change their minds.
The Gund “family,” living together on the author’s isolated and decaying estate, includes Gund’s widow, his mistress, her young daughter, Gund’s brother, and his partner. Omar’s unannounced arrival upsets their fragile co-existence and causes all to question their own circumstances, which in turn leads Omar himself to question to what degree, if any; he has been the author of his own existence up until now.

If I were to judge The City of Your Final Destination only by its credits, it would receive top marks. Anthony Hopkins and Laura Linney are two of the best actors still on this planet, and director James Ivory is no stranger to cinematic glory. Unfortunately, I watched this film, so the scores are significantly lower than I had imagined.
The basic premise is interesting enough, I suppose. Omar (played by Omar Metwally) is a grad student who desperately wants to write a biography about Jules Gund, a legendary author, and is denied permission in this adaptation of Peter Cameron’s novel of the same name. Omar travels to Ocho Rios, a secluded area in Uruguay, to meet with Gund’s family, including his widow (Laura Linney), brother Adam (Anthony Hopkins) and mistress (Charlotte Gainsbourg), in hopes of convincing them to reconsider. The family is hesitant to let Omar into their house and lives,...

So instead , since this column is called the Best.Gay.Week.Ever!, I thought it would be fun to look back to the dawn of time and name the gay shows, characters, actors, writers I think most deserving of, well, let's call them the Gay Emmys, or following the lead of Kathy Griffin, the Gemmys!
Here are the categories for which I'll be selecting winners as if these nominees were competing against each other for an Emmy: Best Drama Series, Best Comedy Series, Best Gay Actor Comedy, Best Gay Actor Drama, Best Writing Drama,...

Deborah Ann Woll has joined the cast of the drama "Someday This Pain Will Be Useful to You." According to The Hollywood Reporter, Ellen Burstyn, Marcia Gay Harden, Lucy Liu, Toby Regbo and Stephen Lang have already been cast. The film focuses on an isolated young adult (Regbo) who must deal with his dysfunctional family the summer before he heads to college. Roberto Faenza is directing the film, which is adapted from the novel by Peter Cameron. John Heyman of World Productions and Elda Ferri of Jean Viggo Italia are producing. Shooting begins next month in New York. Woll is best known for her role on HBO's "True Blood." She recently booked "Catch .44," a crime drama with...

The Italian production starts shooting today in Central Park, New York City. The Oscar-winning actress joins Marcia Gay Harden, Toby Regbo (Harry Potter), Lucy Liu (Charlie's Angels), Stephen Lang (Avatar) and Deborah Ann Woll (True Blood) in this coming-of-age story. Italian financiers including Rai Cinema are fully financing this adaptation of the teenage novel by New York-based author Peter Cameron, which was a bestseller in Italy. The novel tells a Holden Caufield-ish tale of a teenager working in his mother’s pretentious Manhattan art gallery, where he finds himself accused of sexual harassment. Roberto Faenza is the director and the producer is Elda Ferri (Life Is Beautiful). It’s a wholly Italian-financed production, partly financed by Rai Cinema. One footnote is that the script is by Dahlia Heyman, step-sister of Harry Potter producer David Heyman. By my reckoning, she’s the fifth member of the Heyman dynasty to enter the business.

Chicago – It’s unlikely that there will be a more A-list cast in a more frustrating film this entire year than on display in “The City of Your Final Destination.” Not only does it include a reunion of the great director James Ivory with star Anthony Hopkins (who appeared in the director’s “Howards End” and “Remains of the Day”) but it features two of my favorite actresses alive, Charlotte Gainsbourg and Laura Linney. And yet, the only word I can think of to describe the film is “disappointing.”
DVD Rating: 2.0/5.0
The opening scenes of “The City of Your Final Destination” hint at a gorgeously shot film that one hopes will be matched by the incredible insight of Ivory’s best work with screenwriter Ruth Prawer Jhabvala, who won Oscars for her adaptation of “A Room With a View” and “Howards End.” Like a leaky balloon, the dramatic weight of...

For 30 years, a Merchant Ivory production has signaled a particular genre: a period drama of manners featuring genteel characters in opulent settings. These films are often British and based on Henry James or E.M. Forster, nearly always penned by Ruth Prawer Jhabvala, more than once featuring Anthony Hopkins. In director James Ivory’s latest project, filmed in 2007, the latter collaborations recur and, although the setting (modern-day Latin America) and source material (a novel by American Peter Cameron) have shifted hemispheres, the look and feel are very much of a piece with Merchant Ivory’s previous films.

Everybody has a story in James Ivory's The City of Your Final Destination - but not everyone is interested in having his or her story told. Such is the biographer's burden: He knows - or thinks he knows - the story he wants to write. But getting other people to give him the pieces of the story is a different job entirely. Based on a novel by Peter Cameron, The City of Your Final Destination, opening in limited release Friday (4/16/10), is an orphaned film that's been completed since 2007. But even with Ivory's Oscar-studded past, the current climate for independent film made it seem like a risky proposition until now, apparently. It's not hard to see why. Quiet, deliberate and understated in its humor and romance, City is a subtle, polished story that is, in the parlance, "character-driven." There's not a...

I was wondering if we'd eventually see what I believe is James Ivory's first "post" Ismail Merchant project - his long time partner passed away a couple of years back and the film with a stellar cast in Anthony Hopkins, Laura Linney, and Charlotte Gainsbourg was pretty much completed in 2007 and yet only saw the day of light at the Rome and Tokyo Film Festivals this past October. Were the money problems during post-production? - I was wondering if we'd eventually see what I believe is James Ivory's first "post" Ismail Merchant project - his long time partner passed away a couple of years back and the film with a stellar cast in Anthony Hopkins, Laura Linney, and Charlotte Gainsbourg was pretty much completed in 2007 and yet only saw the day of light at the Rome and Tokyo Film Festivals this past October.
