One day in the early 80s, I was with my girlfriend in a shopping mall. Somehow I had been relegated to the role of sidekick while she shopped. I liked to do a lot of things with her, but shopping wasn’t high on that list. I was bored so I decided to buy a comic book to read while she shopped.
Back then I was enjoying a lot of comics and purchasing them every week at Kim’s Collectible Comics and Records. But one store in that mall had a spinner rack filled with comics, and I knew I could snag an issue that I had missed.
I evaluated the comics available on that rack and hoped that one would be my salvation from the dreariness of shopping. I reached out for Swamp Thing #21, and was surprised to find an unfamiliar writer wrote it. I decided to give it a try nonetheless.

A little over twenty years ago, Vertigo began to publish the Preacher series by Garth Ennis and Steve Dillon. It was my job to promote it to mainstream (i.e. non-comic book trade) media. I was already a huge fan of Garth’s run on Hellblazer and almost got a blurb for it from Sting until the corporate types told me that wasn’t allowed.
I loved every issue of Preacher. It was funny and scary and emotional and philosophical and brilliant. It simultaneously evoked John Ford westerns and Harvey Kurtzman slapstick. It had a character named Arseface, for crying out loud. I did some of my best work promoting that book, because I believed I was bringing happiness to millions.
Needless to say, I was thrilled to find out there was going to be a television show based on the comics (or “graphic novels” as it says in the opening credits). Unlike many,...

Starting tonight on BBC Radio 4 is a brand new reading of Neil Gaiman's myth-inspired The Truth Is A Cave In The Black Mountains...
Fifteen good minutes can make all the difference to a Monday. And you know that fifteen minutes of a Neil Gaiman story are going to be fifteen good minutes.
In the interests of improving Mondays everywhere, then, it's worth knowing that this week's BBC Radio 4 Book At Bedtime will be Neil Gaiman's The Truth Is A Cave In The Black Mountains. The five-part story starts tonight, Monday the 23rd of November, at 10.45pm and continues every night at the same time until this Friday.
Inspired by a Hebridean myth, it's the story of "two men who travel across a desolate landscape, through the Black Mountains and to the Misty Isle in search of treasure." Originally published in 2010 as part of anthology collection,...

More than 100,000 are expected to attend, but not everyone in San Diego is happy with where the comics culture stands now
Batmobiles, Iron Man costumes, Superman teasers, Spider-man gadgets: the Hollywood marketing machine has put superheroes at the heart of the pop culture phenomenon known as Comic-Con.
Studios are blitzing the graphic novel and entertainment industry's four-day showcase in San Diego, which opened Thursday, with stunts, freebies and previews to keep the spotlight on film franchises worth billions of dollars.
The tens of thousands of fans who queued to caress props, buy merchandise and glimpse clips had no complaint but the extravaganza sparked criticism and unease that comics, the entertainment industry's creative engine, risked withering in the shadows.
Some comic book creators and analysts said Hollywood hype over superheroes, and television networks' promotion of a handful of other characters, were drowning out more literate and original graphic novels.
"I hate it.

Will Eisner’s P.S. Magazine: The Best of The Preventive Maintenance Monthly
By Will Eisner, selected and with an overview by Eddie Campbell
272 pages, Abrams ComicArts, $21.95
As far back as 1940, during the publicity campaign for the launch of The Spirit Sunday section, Will Eisner spoke of the potential for comic books to do more than entertain but to educate. Within a decade, he got to put theory into practice by winning the contract to package P.S. Magazine: The Preventive Maintenance Monthly for the United States Army. After over 700 issues, the magazine continues to chug along with the likes of Murphy Anderson and Joe Kubert following in his might footsteps.
Anyone reading a biography of Eisner knows that he took on P.S. in part because he wearied of the weekly grind required of The Spirit and because he was restless but unless we’ve enlisted, getting to see the legendary magazine proved problematic.

Before the panel starts at San Diego Comic-Con, we hope somebody addresses the issues of potential for confusion in the marketplace and possible violation of trademark.
To start, we have First Comics. First Comics was a publisher co-founded by ComicMix’s own Mike Gold in 1983, notable for series like GrimJack, Jon Sable Freelance, Nexus, Badger, Whisper, Dreadstar, Shatter, Munden’s Bar, Classics Illustrated, and American Flagg! It published early work from John Ostrander, Timothy Truman, Norm Breyfogle, Mike Saenz, Mike Baron, as well as the first color appearance of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. It went out of business in 1991, and has published nothing in the twenty years since. Some of the series previously published by First have found their way to being published elsewhere, including ComicMix publishing GrimJack, Jon Sable Freelance, and Munden’s Bar.

Lew Sayre Schwartz, one of the lesser known Bob Kane ghosts on Batman, died on June 7 at age 84 after a fall according to his son, Andrew. Schwartz began working for Kane as a ghost in 1948 and remained the principal artist under Kane’s name on the Batman features in Batman and Detective Comics until 1953. Art historians believe he produced at least 120 stories during this period.
Kane signed a new deal with DC in 1948 and hired Schwartz to help handle the workload. Schwartz’s work began with penciling the stories, letting Kane do the actual Batman and Robin faces, then ink the lettered pages. Kane was understood to have made frequent changes to the artwork, altering the main heroic figures and secondary characters.

As the wave of zombie appreciation continues to ebb and flow, fans have already begun their search for the next phase of undead stories. The “siege” mentality (“They’re at the door trying to break in and eat us… what do we do?”) has become such a well-trodden road that many fans find themselves on a quest for the next idea. Some writers are already ahead of the curve and have been able to think outside the box, creating a new chapter in the living dead mythos. Mira Grant’s exemplary book Feed is one. Mark Rahner is another with his Moonstone comic series, Rotten. The ongoing comic takes the undead nightmare and sets it in the Old West amidst a thrilling backdrop of intrigue and adventure: think equal parts Joe R Lansdale’s Dead in The West and Deadman’s Road and the 1965 CBS television series Wild Wild West…...

If you have been a soap fan for any length of time, then chances are you have a very beautiful but somewhat out-of-date coffee table book of your favorite show, either past or present. During the mid-late 90s, most shows put out an elegant and historical pictorial featuring plot synopses and rare pictures. Authors Greg Meng and Eddie Campbell have updated and upgraded this concept by offering an aesthetically gorgeous and fascinating look behind the scenes in the new book "Days Of Our Lives 45 Years: A Celebration In Photos."
Yes, there are plenty of historical pictures from 1965 onward that have never been published before. You see actors reading cue cards in the Horton living room, Suzanne Rogers (Maggie) getting her hair done in 1974, Josh Taylor (Roman) and James Reynolds (Abe) playing basketball on a lunch break, and more. What Days fans have also never previously viewed are the structural compositions of the show.

Forty-five years ago today sand started sifting through the hour glass as The Days of our Lives premiered. This milestone makes it the second longest running show in daytime history (behind only General Hospital).
If you're a Days fan, be sure to visit the 45th Anniversary special features on the website. There are incredible classic photos from the early days of production (with some amazing pics of a very young and in love Bill Hayes and Susan Seaforth). They also have cast interviews and links so you can purchase the anniversary books—A Secret in Salem by Sheri Anderson and Days of our Lives 45 Years: A Celebration in Photos by Greg Meng and Eddie Campbell.
But the best feature on the site is the Timeline. Click on any year and see what story line was unfolding on that day. We bet you'll be coming back for more.

In sad, but not entirely unexpected news, Harvey Pekar, best known for his long-running American Splendor underground/indie comic book series, passed away early this morning at his home in Ohio. Pekar had been suffering from multiple illnesses, including prostrate cancer, asthma, high blood pressure, and depression. He was 70.
Pekar began American Splendor in 1976 to document non-superheroic, everyday life, including his own, in his native hometown, Cleveland, Ohio, often with a caustic, acerbic, self-deprecatory wit. Pekar's work attracted some of the most-respected and well-known names in underground and mainstream comics, including Robert Crumb, Alison Bechdel, Chester Brown, Greg Budgett, David Collier, Dean Haspiel (The Quitter), Josh Neufeld, Joe Sacco, Eddie Campbell, Gilbert Hernandez, and Ty Templeton. American Splendor's last issue appeared in 2008.
Outside of underground comics, Pekar was best known for a recurring stint on the David Letterman show in the late 1980s. NBC eventually banned Pekar from appearing...

It would be a strange history text indeed that told of the denizens of Lewis Carroll's fictional Wonderland adventuring amidst the American Civil War, and yet that is exactly the story laid out in Mad With Wonder, the second collected volume of Frank Beddor's Hatter M series.
Turning the classic story of Alice on its ear, Hatter M: Mad With Wonder (Automatic Pictures, hc, 208 pp, $24.99) follows the exploits of Royal Bodyguard Hatter Madigan as he scours our world for the lost Princess Alyss. Followers of Beddor's The Looking Glass Wars are already familiar with the premise. What is presented here in the collected hardcover is a fleshing out of the full story of Hatter Madigan's thirteen-year search, mentioned briefly in the novels themselves. It is an extraordinarily different take on the familiar Wonderland, with Hatter Madigan transformed from a besotted lunatic to a formidable fighter, armed with an...

Dominick Dunne. From PatrickMcMullan.com.Dominick Dunne’s son Griffin told a great story at his father’s funeral, in New York City, yesterday. Griffin said he’d been asked at Frank E. Campbell funeral home if he’d like to hire security to keep away the “professional mourners,” strangers who crash the wakes of celebrities. He said he immediately wished he’d been able to tell his father there was a name for this pastime—as Dominick himself had been known to drop in on the funeral home when he and his young family had lived nearby, long before he became a journalist, to see what famous mobster or socialite was lying inside. The crowd—almost 800 people packed inside the Church of Saint Vincent Ferrer, on Lexington and 66th Street—roared with laughter. If Dominick was a professional mourner, he was also a professional partygoer, stage manager, and social observer,...

Rumor that DJ Am was dumped by his girlfriend Hailey Wood just few weeks before his death has been shot down. The 22-year-old model has opened up to the latest issue of Us Magazine, which will be on newsstands on Wednesday, September 2, about the truth of her romance with the celebrity deejay.
"Any indication that this horribly tragic accident happened because of a rumored breakup is not only untrue but disgusting," Wood told Us Magazine. "We were very much together at the time of his passing, and I love him very much."
Recently, it was rumored that Hayley Wood, DJ Am's girlfriend of nearly a year, dumped him within the past weeks before the 36-year-old performer was found dead in his seventh-floor apartment on Lafayette street in New York City on August 28. Moreover, Am was said feeling really heartbroken due to the break-up.
"She ended it, and he didn't want it to end.
