Forgiven for Forgetting
After starting the year with one of the best horror sequels of all time in Hellbound: Hellraiser II, we moved into the hilariously smart German satire Killer Condom. Trace and I should have known the good times wouldn’t last!
With this week’s discussion of Renny Harlin‘s The Covenant, we begin a two-week stretch of poorly rated, very dumb thrillers. In the film, Caleb (Steven Strait) is a member of the popular Boys of Ipswich at an elite boarding school. He also has a dangerous birthright: the men in his family can use The Power to get what they want.
The trade-off? The more they use their abilities, the faster they age, as evidenced by his father’s (Stephen McHattie) condition.
Things change with the arrival of dangerous bad boy Chase (Sebastian Stan). Suddenly both Caleb’s relationship with Sarah (Laura Ramsey) and his 18th birthday ascension are under threat.

My guess is that all true movie lovers have a list of films which remain unavailable on a decent DVD or Blu-Ray release and for which they are waiting for some company to pick up and give it a nice release. This was true for me regarding The Slayer. I first saw the film in the early-to-mid-eighties on a VHS double-bill with Fred Olen Ray’s Scalps. Both films were pretty terrible quality but both were fun in their own way and I duped both and kept them for a long time. Scalps has long since been on DVD (and recently Blu-Ray), and I have long owned a copy of that film which I still pull out from time to time and watch again. But my dupe of The Slayer died decades ago and I hadn’t viewed the film in a long time…...

Is she losing her mind, or are her childhood nightmares of a demonic assailant coming to terrifying life?
Previously only available on home video in truncated or full screen versions, The Slayer – whose nightmares-seeping-into-reality theme predates a certain Wes Craven classic by several years – comes lovingly restored from the original negative in...

If you have a hankering for all things slasher, then you're gonna want to grab your machete and get ready to party as 88 Films are poised to unsheathe High Rising Productions' independent documentary Slice & Dice: The Slasher Film Forever in a double-dvd set on May 13th.
Synopsis:
Ever since Alfred Hitchcock created Psycho in 1960, the story of a weapon-wielding madman - stalking and slaughtering helpless victims - has become a fixture of fear flicks and bludgeoned bombastic box office takings worldwide. Slice & Dice: The Slasher Film Forever takes an often irreverent look at this much-maligned, and frequently misunderstood, genre with commentary from some of the form's most celebrated filmmakers. Cutting an immediate presence on the screen, this delirious documentary delves into the history of hack 'em up cinema, investigates the rules of this teen-trepanning terror trend and even gives some pointers into how to survive a stint in the genre.

Packed with on-camera interviews with filmmakers including Tobe Hooper (pictured), Tom Holland, Mick Garris, Christopher Smith, Scott Spiegel, Eduardo Sánchez, Patrick Lussier and many others, Slice And Dice (which we first covered here) was produced by Waddell and Naomi Holwill (who also shot and edited). Its U.S. premiere takes place this Sunday, December 2 at the Roxie Theatre in San Francisco as part of the Another Hole in the Head Film Festival. “Co-producer Joe Venegas will be there to introduce the screening,” Waddell tells us. “We’re also going to be playing Fantasporto next year, which we’re excited about, and we just won the award for Best Documentary at the annual Horrorfest bash in South Africa.
“We need to stress,” he adds, “that our eventual DVD release, which takes place in the UK on March 11, 2013, will feature different clips from those in the cut currently doing the festival circuit.

Welcome to another installment of It Came From 1980X where I tackle the 80′s like a running clothes line fresh off the turnbuckle. Tonight we have a double feature for you straight from Continental Video. Don’t know Contintental Video? I’m not surprised, but I assure you by the end of this whole thing you most certainly will know them, fear them and maybe enjoy them a bit better. They’ve put out so much of what you love, but I don’t think they were marketed nearly as well as Midnight, Wizard, Canon or Media. For Christ’s sake somebody get me a T-shirt of this beautiful company. The double feature in question comes courtesy of Vhsps as is often the case. The Slayer and Scalps were released as a part of a special promotion as is stated on the cover of the VHS (or in this case handsome DVD rip).
2 Films.

Chicago – The original “The Stepfather” is such a product of its era that I have to admit that I went into the remake wondering what on Earth they could do to bring such an ’80s story into the ’00s. The answer turns out to be shockingly little. “The Stepfather” isn’t that bad. In fact, it’s better executed than I expected. It’s just a shadow of the original in that it never justifies its existence.
Blu-Ray Rating: 2.0/5.0
The first “Stepfather,” starring Terry O’Quinn who would go on to fame as John Locke on “Lost,” is clever, well-made, thrilling, and one of the best movies of its kind from its era. O’Quinn is fantastic and Joseph Ruben’s direction wisely plays the film as more of a domestic thriller than a straight-up horror film. The best of these films operate as if this lunatic could be your...

Every horror fan has their own idea about the worst-case scenario and result when it comes to the remaking of a classic ’70s or ’80s fright film. Some rue the day Michael Bay grabbed the rights to The Texas Chainsaw Massacre; others can’t abide what Rob Zombie did with Halloween. For me, it was the day the team behind last year’s execrable Prom Night got their hands on the superb 1987 psychothriller The Stepfather. The result isn’t quite as awful as Prom, but it is a flat, one-dimensional movie that significantly dumbs down what was previously a provocative and genuinely chilling narrative.
It also robs the title character of the complexity and depth of the 1987 film’s Jerry Blake, played so memorably by Terry O’Quinn. David Harris (Dylan Walsh) also wants a perfect family, charms his way into the lives of widows or divorcees with kids and...

Indifference is, perhaps, one of the most frustrating attitudes one can have towards a film. If you love a film, singing its praises is a natural by-product. Hating a film can often times be an even more cathartic experience than loving a film, as vitriol is always easily on tap. But not particularly caring one way or the other? That's oddly frustrating for me.
The Stepfather, the most recent collaboration between producer J.S. Cardone and director Nelson McCormick (the last being their remake of Prom Night, a project I feel safe calling the most annoying horror film of 2008, and even that's being diplomatic), is another entry to a new Hollywood tradition of finding vaguely recognizable films from the 1980s and remaking them on the cheap. Now, I'm not one to bemoan this business model; it's fine if the end result has enough originality to it that there is at least...

Phobia Friday: Vitricophobia - Fear of step-father. One look at the credits of the writer and director on Sony's new remake of The Stepfather (1987) is all you need to know: Director Nelson McCormick and screenwriter J.S. Cardone last collaborated on a little remake called Prom Night, and that's the film I'd point to as the true low point in this Horror Remake Renaissance we're clearly (and eternally) mired within. But here's the good news: If you did that small amount of research, and you walked into The Stepfather expecting something as unwatchable as Prom Night ... you'd be in for a slightly pleasant surprise. No, that's not to say that the new Stepfather is any sort of radically transcendent or...

As if by magic, The Stepfather is almost exactly like the outward persona of its main character - it's likable, good, and mostly knows what to say, but it's not lovable, great, and its definitely not without its flaws. Essentially, on the metaphorical amps in my mind, everything here has been cranked up to 6. Perhaps the most apt description of the film is that it's competent commercial filmmaking, but nothing at all special. David Harris (or whatever his name is going to be with the next family (Dylan Walsh)) leaves a murdered family behind to go find a new one, and stumbles upon Susan (Sela Ward) and her two kids in the supermarket. A few months of courtship later, he's moved in just in time for her oldest son Michael (Penn Badgley) to come home from military school for the summer. Can they be the perfect family, or will have to kill them all and move on...

"Gossip Girl" star Penn Badgley gets all serious in the upcoming Screen Gems thriller "The Stepfather." He stars alongside Dylan Walsh and Sela Ward in this remake of the 1987 film of the same name.
When a man mysteriously comes into the lives of his single mother, Michael (Badgley) is suspicious. David (Walsh) seems very much a "family values" man and really interested with Michael's mother, Susan (Ward), but Michael suspects he is not quite the man he pretends to be.
As Michael starts to piece together the mystery of the man set to become his stepfather, he uncovers an ugly truth that may destroy the whole family.
Amber Heard, Christopher Meloni, Sherry Stringfield, Paige Turco, and Jon Tenney also star. Nelson McCormick directed by a script written by J.S. Cardone ("Prom Night").

Eric Weston, the filmmaker responsible for turning Clint Howard into a satanically powered psychopath in 1982’s Evilspeak, got in touch with Fango to talk up his new creature feature Hyenas. “I would say it belongs in the werewolf genre,” he tells us about the movie, which stars Saw villain Costas Mandylor and 2001 Maniacs starlet Christa Campbell, the latter of whom provided the fresh photos seen below.
“The story claims that there are several packs of these ‘were-hyenas’ roaming around the United States,” Weston continues. “They travel from place to place, finding people to eat. In our film, a man called Gannon, played by Costas, is out to get his revenge on the beasts that killed his wife and child. However, there is a nice amount of tongue-in-cheek humor in Hyenas; it has quite a lighthearted feel.”
The writer/director also acknowledges that it was something of a lucky break to get Mandylor involved.

Screen Gems after the success of Resident Evil Extinction has decided to release another Prom Night in April. I am usually one that supports remakes, but in this case, I didn’t care that much for the 1980 film. “Especially, not enough for a redux!” Donna’s (Brittany Snow,Hairspray) senior prom is supposed to be the best night of her life. After surviving a horrible tragedy, she has finally moved on and is enjoying her last year of high school. Surrounded by her best friends, she should be safe from the horrors of her past. But when the night turns deadly, there is only one person who could be responsible…a man she thought was gone forever. Now, Donna and her friends must find a way to escape the sadistic rampage of an obsessed killer, and survive a night “to die for.” Man, it keeps getting better and better! Prom Night...
