Adapted from the novel Lady No. 13 by Jose Carlos Somoza, Jaume Balagueró's latest film, Muse, looks like another sumptuous, supernatural Spanish genre piece. Most famous as one of the co-creators of the incredibly popular [Rec] series, Balagueró seems to have set aside the blood and gore of that franchise in favour of a more classical, we'll say literary, approach. This English trailer, which comes courtesy of Bloody Disgusting, shows the story of a professor of literature who suffers a recurring nightmare in which a woman is brutally murdered by a strange ritual. When the same woman is found dead in identical circumstances, he seeks to discover the identity of the mystery woman, plunging into a dark world ruled by the muses that inspired the...

In the lead up to Cannes, we revisit the 2010 Screen Jury Grid and reflect on what critics around the world had to say about the films in Competition.
Each year, Screen calls upon its international jury of critics to cast their judgement on the films in Competition at the Cannes Film Festival and rounds up the results in the ever-popular Screen Jury Grid.
In 2010, top marks from the critics went to Mike Leigh’s romantic drama Another Year, which scored a strong 3.4 out of 4. The ensemble drama was Leigh’s fourth film in Competition at Cannes, including Secrets and Lies, which won the top prize in 1996.
Leigh has since been up for the Palme d’Or with biopic Mr Turner, which starred Timothy Spall as eccentric British painter J.M.W. Turner, for which he won best actor at the festival in 2014.
But in 2010, the Palme d’Or went to fantasy drama Uncle Boonmee Who Can Recall...

As Patricio Guzman’s latest documentary The Pearl Button, which premiered at the 2015 Berlin Film Festival, completes its festival circuit rounds, a comprehensive box set of the famed Chilean documentarian’s most iconic works arrives on DVD. One of the world’s most noted masters of the medium, Guzman’s works provide an invaluable framework of his country’s violent past following the socialist revolution and violent coup which resulted in seventeen years of a harsh and violent dictatorship under the rule of Augusto Pinochet. Beginning with the three part saga The Battle of Chile, this eight disc set includes all of his most notable major historical and political documentaries through 2011’s Nostalgia for the Light. Though the collection is not a complete account of Guzman’s filmography, it’s a thematic distillation of a country’s harrowing history, and Guzman’s footage evolves from an initial priceless account of...

Like a Brazilian version of domestic whack-a-mole, as soon as one figure scuffles out of a room in Anna Muylaert's "The Second Mother," there's another that scuffles in, carrying with them new baggage full of locked contempt. The one doing the whacking is Val (Regina Case), a live-in housemaid working for wealthy middle-class parents Barbara (Karine Teles) and Dr. Jose Carlos (Lourenço Mutarelli), and their fragile teenage son, Fabinho (Michel Joeisas). House dynamics get shaken up when Val's estranged daughter, Jessica (Camila Mardila) — the most stubborn of the four moles — comes to stay with her mom in Sao Paulo, and turns out to be less accommodating than expected. The unwritten rules of class distinction get stepped on and broken in ways that make "The Second Mother" charmingly immersive. Thanks to its gradual minimalist nature, a dynamite lead performance, and Muylaert's sharp screenplay and sedative direction, the film has the fun,...
