As a fan, I cannot believe that Subspecies V: Bloodrise has finally arrived after twenty-five years. The movie was first promised only a few years after the release of Subspecies 4: Bloodstorm. I remember being a preteen on the Internet, on Full Moon’s original website, when the announcement of a new Subspecies, a prequel that would tell Radu’s origin down through the centuries, first hit. I hadn’t even seen any of the sequels yet, and I was still absolutely thrilled. Then nothing came of it. Full Moon became a smaller and smaller company, spending much of the early 2000s as Shadow Entertainment, the smallest scale era of the studio to date, before bouncing back by the end of the decade. But the budgets over time have still been much, much smaller than they had been in the ‘90s, when those first four Subspecies films were made. Given...

After Puppet Master, Subspecies is undoubtedly Full Moon’s most successful franchise. The two are similar in that they both have an intricate central mythology that is expanded upon over time, and while both have their share of quirky humor, the films are much more serious in tone than other notable Full Moon franchises like Gingerdead Man or Evil Bong. The two series, however, also have their share of stark differences. For one thing, the Puppet Master series has spawned 15 films to date: 13 official entries from the home studio, plus a crossover by the Sci-Fi Channel and a remake. They also play it fast and loose in terms of continuity. Many different screenwriters have come and gone, adding to and contradicting the established mythology—sometimes in equal doses.

Full Moon’s Subspecies is an interesting franchise. It started in 1991, right at the dawn of a decade that’s all-too-often considered to be a mixed bag of horror offerings, catering to the direct-to-video market that was booming at the time. Until now, with the release of Subspecies V: Bloodrise on Screambox June 2, there had not been an entry in this series since 1998, nor had there even really been much merchandise until the comic book miniseries by Cullen Bunn a few years ago; and yet the vampire franchise still persists as a cult classic.
Subspecies is a seminal vampire franchise, Radu has many loyal followers and that fandom has sustained for decades, with long, long stretches without anything to feed it. That is a true testament to the talents of writer/director Ted Nicolaou, original screenwriter David Pabian, and of course Anders Hove as the villainous Radu. The franchise has...

Alamo Drafthouse Cinema should offer a special brew spiked with drippings from the Bloodstone to celebrate their newest infernal partnership. After 25 years of dormancy, Full Moon Features is pulling the Sword of Laertes out from the chests of the vampires of Subspecies for a limited theatrical release of its newest open wound. And make no mistake about it, director Ted Nicolaou’s prequel Subspecies V: Bloodrise is a must-watch for Subspecies fans, and a should-see for horror fans in general.
Beginning with Subspecies (1991) and running through Subspecies 4: Bloodstorm (1998), this movie series remained unique, without having to veil its most overt influence—which is all the most classic portrayals of the legendary creature on film or page, particularly by way of eastern European castles. Writer/director Ted Nicolaou was really pumping out entries in the Full Moon vampire series Subspecies back in the ’90s. The first Subspecies was released in 1991, Bloodstone: Subspecies II in 1993, Bloodlust: Subspecies III in 1994, the Subspecies-adjacent film Vampire Journals in 1997, and Subspecies 4: Bloodstorm in 1998. And he was fully prepared to keep the series rolling. During an interview with Pop Horror, he confirmed that he originally wrote the screenplay for Subspecies V: Blood Rise – which will receive a one-night theatrical release in thirty to forty cities, courtesy of Alamo Drafthouse, on May 15th – more than twenty years ago!
Nicolaou told Pop Horror, “We basically thought that Subspecies the first one, back in 1990 actually when we were shooting around eight months after the (Romanian) revolution that toppled Ceaușescu, we thought it was a one-off film and that would be it. It wasn’t until we screened it finally for Paramount – because...

When the trailer for the long-awaited Full Moon production Subspecies V: Blood Rise arrived online last month, the expectation was that the movie would be available to watch on FullMoonFeatures.com by the end of February, and would then be available on Amazon Prime Video shortly after its debut. But plans have changed. During a new episode of his Full Moon Universe YouTube show, Full Moon founder Charles Band revealed that Subspecies V: Blood Rise will receive a theatrical release in thirty to forty cities, courtesy of Alamo Drafthouse, on May 15th. The theatrical screenings of Subspecies V: Blood Rise will be a one-night event, and Band is hoping to have a Full Moon representative at each theatre to do giveaways and sell merchandise. Full Moon will also be filming some kind of intro with director Ted Nicolaou and stars Anders Hove and Denice Duff to show before the movie begins.

We have a very eclectic mix of Blu-rays for you in this latest Blu-ray column. In fact, I can't remember a time when I've rounded up such an odd assortment of films. Not only do we have the new 4K release of "The Texas Chain Saw Massacre," but we also have the animated "Puss in Boots: The Last Wish," the beautiful drama "The Remains of the Day," and Dario Argento's "Phenomena" just to cap things off. Like I said: eclectic.

Often copied, never duplicated, there will never be anything like "The Texas Chain Saw Massacre" again. Even after all these years, Tobe Hooper's tale of some travelers who run afoul of a cannibal family is terrifying. Why? Because it feels like something we shouldn't be seeing. The rough, raw style makes the entire movie feel like a documentary; like someone created a...

I thought I was done buying The Texas Chain Saw Massacre after upgrading to the 40th anniversary edition Blu-ray in 2014. Between the crisp presentation and the copious extras, I was certain it was the definitive version of Tobe Hooper‘s 1974 masterpiece. Yet here I am, nearly a decade later, ready to sing the praises of Dark Sky Films‘ 4K Ultra HD edition.
Long before “gritty” was an industry buzzword, The Texas Chain Saw Massacre epitomized the term. As such, one might be wary that a 4K restoration could hinder the viewing experience, but that is not at all the case. Utilizing the 4K scan from the aforementioned Blu-ray, which was approved by Hooper, and now with a wider color gamut courtesy of Hdr, the picture is presented in staggering clarity while maintaining the 16mm film grain. The oppressive heat is virtually palpable.

Directed by Tobe Hooper from a script he wrote with Kim Henkel, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre has the following synopsis: When Sally hears that her grandfather’s grave may have been vandalized, she and her paraplegic brother, Franklin, set out with their friends to investigate. Only five months have passed since we heard that the long-awaited Subspecies V: Blood Rise had finally started filming (more than twenty years after the release of the previous entry in the series), with franchise director Ted Nicolaou back at the helm. Now a trailer for Subspecies V: Blood Rise has arrived online, along with the announcement that the movie is set to exclusively premiere on FullMoonFeatures.com later this month! It will also be made available on Amazon Prime shortly after its debut.
Produced by Full Moon founder Charles Band and scripted by Nicolaou, Subspecies V: Blood Rise has the following synopsis: Stolen by crusaders on the night of his birth, he has no knowledge of his bloodline: his mother is a demon; his father is a vampire.

Full Moon’s Subspecies franchise returns with brand new fifth installment Blood Rise – Subspecies V, a prequel that’s coming to the streaming service Full Moon Features this month.
Here’s the plot synopsis for the new movie, directed by Ted Nicolaou…
“Stolen by crusaders on the night of his birth, he has no knowledge of his bloodline: his mother is a demon; his father is a vampire. Trained and exploited by a brotherhood of mystic monks to slay all enemies of the church, fate brings him back one night to the castle of his father, armed with the monster-slaying Sword of Laertes, to destroy the vampire Vladislas and reclaim a holy relic: The Bloodstone.
“The events of that night turn Radu from a noble man into a vampire with no master, setting him on a centuries-long quest for sustenance, and companionship, for the treacherous one who stole him from the sun,...

"Open the door!" Full Moon Features has released an official trailer for a kinky B-movie horror titled Don't Let Her In, one of these very bad creations that goes straight to the bargain bin. The film follows Ben and Amber, an attractive young couple who rent out an extra room in their spacious loft to Serena, an eccentric, beautiful female artist and... they soon live to regret it. Turns out she's actually some kinda vampire demon. A "sensual supernatural nightmare" from writer/director Ted Nicolaou. The film stars Kelly Curran, Cole Pendery, & Lorin Doctor. "I hope horror fans everywhere enjoy Don't Let Her In, an eerie story of aspiring young artists in LA, the insecurity of our perceptions and relationships, and how the shortage of affordable housing opens the door to a roommate from Hell." Indeed. Here's the first official trailer (+ poster) for Ted Nicolaou's Don't Let Her In, direct...

The weirdest sci-fi thriller of the ’80s, TerrorVision, was ahead of its time with its prediction of the era of Netflix.
“Like the rest of his warped nuclear family, Stanley Putterman (Gerrit Graham) can’t contain his excitement at the new satellite dish that will beam hundreds of channels into their ridiculously garish home. This is 1986, after all, an era when even cable could only offer a few dozen. But by the end of Ted Nicolaou’s ultra-kitsch monster mash, their insatiable appetite for the small screen has literally consumed them all.”

When it comes to horror and sci-fi movies from 1986, there are several milestone titles that always come to mind first: Aliens, The Fly, Blue Velvet, Friday the 13th Part VI: Jason Lives, Manhunter, Poltergeist II: The Other Side, or even Psycho III, just to name a few. But like any great year of cinema, there are always a few underrated gems that get overshadowed along the way and should receive a little extra love. Here are six films from 1986 that I think deserve to be on every genre fan’s radar:
F/X: A movie about a special effects artist who gets mixed up in a government conspiracy, at a time when practical effects were in their heyday? Yes, please. F/X isn’t a film I hear a ton of folks talk about, but it has been on cable a lot lately, which means I’ve spent a few nights revisiting it,...

In their ongoing quest to bring most of Charles Band’s Empire Films from the ’80s to Blu-ray, Scream Factory is releasing another double feature containing two of the studio’s better efforts: 1984’s The Dungeonmaster (aka Ragewar) and Eliminators from 1986.
Though omnipresent in the horror genre since Dead of Night in 1945 (or even Waxworks in 1924 if you’re willing to count it), the anthology film has rarely extended into the realm of sci-fi or fantasy—Heavy Metal aside, of course. One of the rare exceptions is The Dungeonmaster, an anthology that assembles the all-star team of Empire Pictures in the mid-’80s: Charles Band, John Carl Buechler, Dave Allen, Ted Nicolaou, Pater Manoogian and several others.
Originally intended as a single story that was expanded by necessity into an anthology, The Dungeonmaster follows computer programmer Paul Bradford (Jeffrey Byron, star of Metalstorm: The Destruction of Jared-Syn), inventor of a...

There’s no denying the cultural magnitude of Tobe Hooper’s 1974 grindhouse classic The Texas Chainsaw Massacre. Inspiring legions of seminal directors, as well as providing the framework for a growing horde of derivative copycats (not to mention a gaggle of flaccid sequels, prequels, and rehashes), it’s now reached its 40th year anniversary. Necessitating a half-year transfer process, the brand new 4k transfer was showcased at genre fests such as 2014′s SXSW & Fantasia Film Fests and a prestige re-showing at Cannes’ Directors’ Fortnight. Though decades of horror films have refurbished Hooper’s methods to such a degree that the more infamous episodes of violence may seem less horrific by today’s torture porn standards, the film has lost none of its ambient potency. In all the glorious reconstitutions, no one has been able to outdo the gritty, grainy, and bizarre levels of unease accomplished here.
By now, we all know the well-tread story.

We all knew that there would be a new Blu-ray release of Tobe Hooper’s Texas Chain Saw Massacre back when they started screening a new 4K scan of the film in theaters, so when it went up on Amazon as a pre-order, it came as no surprise. However, shortly thereafter, something appeared on Amazon that intrigued fans, and came with absolutely no explanation. It was called the Black Maria Limited Edition, and cost $70.00. Now, a lot of us have already pre-ordered Scream Factory’s $80.00 Nightbreed set, so that kind of price for a single movie isn’t exactly unprecedented, but up until that point, not a single thing had been announced in regards to this set, so it has remained a mystery until today. A press release was sent out, detailing all of the specifics of all of the various releases, including a description, and photo of the contents of the mysterious Limited Edition.

I’m a bad Full Moon fan. I really am… I can now cross Bad Channels off my list of Full Moon flicks I know of but haven’t seen.
Yet another collaboration between Charles Band and his Subspecies director Ted Nicolaou, Bad Channels tells the story of Dangerous Dan (Hipp) a newly employed DJ at Kdul who is returning to the airwaves after a six month suspension by the FCC for a stunt he pulled while on the air. Covering Dan’s return to the airwaves is Lisa Cummings (Quinn) who doesn’t trust Dan and thinks he’s a hoax. She becomes the butt of his jokes when she spots a UFO landing near the radio station and Dan is quick to laugh until the alien breaks into Kdul.

Recently, I attended the HorrorHound Weekend convention in Cincinnati, Oh which is one of many conventions that have popped up in recent years devoted to the horror and science fiction genre. This particular show had well over 30 celebrities in attendance with six of the Walking Dead stars and it was obvious that a bulk of the attendees came for that. With a sold out weekend where 30,000 tickets were capped off, lines that went on forever, and a convention center packed to capacity, it was obvious this was going to be a very special show and it was.
For those who have never been to one of these shows, you can expect to find a celebrity at a booth/table with a variety of pictures and props for sale. You will have to pay for an autograph and usually a free picture with said celebrity comes with it. The average is $20 per item signed.
