- He began his radio career in 1942 at WOWO in Fort Wayne, Indiana. He moved to Indianapolis, Indiana in 1945 where he sports director at the radio station, WIRE, and wrote a column in the Indianapolis Star newspaper.
- Attended Butler University where he had classes with Donald L. England who later worked with Tom at WRTV in Indianapolis.
