His son, Kevin, confirmed the death to The New York Times. Sparks was living on his 168-acre ranch in Jenny Lind, CA, until a few days before his death.
The New Christy Minstrels were constantly on TV in the 1960s and sold an estimated 2 million albums in their first three years. Randy Meisner, the co-founding Eagles bassist whose soaring voice powered their massive hit “Take It To the Limit,” died Wednesday night from complications caused by chronic pulmonary disease, a statement from the band said. He was 77.
“Randy was an integral part of the Eagles and instrumental in the early success of the band,” the band said in the statement. “His vocal range was astonishing, as is evident on his signature ballad, ‘Take It to the Limit.’”
Before he co-founded the group, Meisner played with Rick Nelson & The Stone Canyon Band and was the original bass player for country-rock group Poco in the late 1960s.
Born on March 8, 1946, in Scottsbluff, Nebraska, Meisner was part of Eagles from their self-titled 1972 debut album through 1976’s Hotel California, quitting the group in 1977 amid internal feuding and behind-the-scenes turmoil. He was replaced by Timothy B. Schmit, who also had succeeded Meisner in Poco after he left to form the Eagles.

Back in 2009, Kenny Rogers and Dolly Parton teamed up for another duet, hoping to re-create the magic of their 1983 classic “Islands in the Stream.” Alas, “Tell Me That You Love Me” didn’t quite make waves like “Island” did, and after being released on a Time-Life compilation dedicated to Rogers, it vanished from print. Now, the lost duet is finally getting a streaming release on a posthumous album from Rogers.

The Grammy for Song of the Year seeks to honor the best lyricism and compositions of the year and has gone to many classic songs through the decades. However, does it skew too much towards slow songs and love ballads?
SEE2022 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame nominees: Eminem, Dolly Parton, Lionel Richie lead list of 17 contenders
It is true that a lot of Song of the Year winners have been easy-listening slow songs. Sammy Davis Jr.’s “What Kind of Fool Am I?,” Henry Mancini’s “Moon River,” and Simon and Garfunkel’s “Bridge Over Troubled Water” were some of the earliest, and that certainly also seems to be true of more recent winners like Adele’s “Hello,” Sam Smith’s “Stay With Me,” and Luther Vandross’s “Dance With My Father.” A lot of these may have been helped by being more easily digestible to multiple voting blocs than more genre-defined music,...

Kenny Rogers always knew when to hold them, when to fold them, when to walk away, when to run. The beloved country-pop stud died Friday night at 81, after a career full of hits that defined his silver-fox mystique. Kenny was barely north of 40 when he sang his signature song, “The Gambler” in 1978, but he came on like a grizzled old sage who’d seen it all. His hits were full of sensually growled wisdom: walk away from trouble when you can, don’t fall in love with a dreamer, never...

Kenny Rogers, whose music went beyond the country music genre he is known for, died at home in Sandy Springs, Ga., Friday night, according to the New York Times. He was 81.
“The Rogers family is sad to announce that Kenny Rogers passed away last night at 10:25Pm at the age of 81,” his family said in a statement to Twitter. “Rogers passed away peacefully at home from natural causes under the care of hospice and surrounded by his family.”
Rogers was known for duets like his chart-topping pairing with Dolly Parton, “Islands in the Stream,” and crossover hits like “Coward of the County,” “Lucille,” “Lady,” and his signature song, “The Gambler.” But the Country Music Hall of Famer went through all genres in his musical journey, from playing upright bass in a jazz band, through subtle Vietnam War commentary with his cover of Mel Tillis’ song “Ruby” to psychedelic swing...

For many, the name Kim Carnes calls to mind one particular song title: “Bette Davis Eyes.” That’s what spending nine weeks at Number One on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1981 will do. Two years before that song hit the charts, though, Carnes was approached by country-pop superstar Kenny Rogers to work on a different sort of project. The singer wanted to create a concept album telling the tale of a modern-day cowboy, and he wanted Carnes — a prolific songwriter who’d spent the first part of her career penning tunes...

In 1993, the year that saw the worldly debuts of future stars Scotty McCreery, Kelsea Ballerini and Kane Brown, country music’s reigning royalty included duo Brooks & Dunn, the now-solo Wynonna Judd and newcomer Billy Ray Cyrus. One artist who would continue to rack up hit after hit throughout the year was Oklahoma’s Reba McEntire, who logged two huge Number One hits in ’93, but shared the spotlight on them with another singer. In August, Linda Davis, who was singing backup with McEntire on the road, joined her on the deliciously dramatic “Does He Love You,...

Labyrinth, starring late rock icon Davie Bowie as the Goblin King, opened in theaters 30 years ago today. Though Labyrinth — a dark, wonderfully weird, glam rock semi-musical populated mostly by puppets — was never going to be a movie that won over a wide audience, it’s still wild to think about how poorly it did upon release given the film now has a secure place in pop culture history and in Bowie’s legacy. It opened at no. 8 at the U.S. box office and earned less than $13 million, barely over half of its reported budget. It was the final film directed by Jim Henson, and in the aftermath of Labyrinth’s poor reception, son Brian said of his father, “that was the closest I've seen him to turning in on himself and getting quite depressed.” Though Henson never got to witness the full fandom that would amass around the movie,...

"The Final Girls" actually hit theaters and VOD last Friday, but consider this my second-weekend push for a very funny, occasionally moving film that is, at heart, a mother-daughter weeper disguised as a horror-comedy. It's a combination that brings to mind Edgar Wright's masterful "Shaun of the Dead," a meta-zombie flick that hit us with moments of real emotion in the midst of a riotous, bloody parody. Recently I chatted with director Todd Strauss-Schulson to talk about the film, which stars "American Horror Story's" Taissa Farmiga as the daughter of a deceased movie "scream queen" (an excellent Malin Akerman) who is magically transported into one of her mother's cult '80s slasher films. One of the things he touched on was the idea of comedy as a vehicle for poignant expressions of emotion, and how laughs can actually heighten the pathos. "The design of the humor [in 'The Final Girls'] was that my...

Spoofaway Camp: Strauss-Schulson’s Playful Mash-up Takes a Tumble On You
Director Todd Strauss-Schulson, whose last feature was A Very Harold & Kumar 3D Christmas (2011) returns with The Final Girls, an entertaining surprise of sorts as a playful riff on early 80s slasher tropes as it borrows the cosmic charms at play in classic titles like Woody Allen’s The Purple Rose of Cairo (1984) and The Wizard of Oz (1939).
With a talented young cast and plenty of boisterous energy, Strauss-Schulson manages to instill a thread of sentimentality in this generally comedic feature, and ironically makes us care more for its characters than the films it pays homage to actually manage. Those looking for genre thrills will most likely be disappointed, and its eventual outcome is a bit too hoary despite its enjoyable cuteness from screenwriters M.A. Fortin and Joshua John Miller (the team who wrote Rose McGowan’s 2014 short film Dawn,...

'The Contender' movie: Exceptional Joan Allen in intriguing but ultimately wimpy political drama "Principles only mean anything when we stick by them when they're inconvenient," says Senator Laine Hanson, played by Joan Allen in Rod Lurie's The Contender. Senator Hanson should know. In Lurie's political drama, the poor Democratic senator is grilled by a Republican inquisitor with a bad hairdo (Gary Oldman) who wants to prevent at all costs her being confirmed as the next Vice President of the United States. Even if that means destroying Hanson's political career by making public the senator's alleged participation in an orgy during her college days.* Now, why such hatred? Well, the Republican watchdog is certain that the U.S. president (Jeff Bridges) has chosen Sen. Hanson because of her gender instead of her qualifications for the job. Adding insult to injury,...

Like nearly everybody you see on "Jeopardy!", I'm obsessed. "Jeopardy!" is my oldest and strongest pop culture fixation, and at this point it stimulates a part of my brain that no Trivial Pursuit card -- even the ones from 1982 featuring obscure Kim Carnes factoids -- can reach. So when I got the call to be a contestant on "Jeopardy!" in January of this year, I didn't panic. It is not too shabby in what the Northeast (New England) part of the United States has produced in terms of past and present actors/actresses making their show business dreams come true. Film careers can be a lot like ice cubes–they start out solid and cool but if you sit around in stagnation your efforts and hard work can melt away before one’s very eyes. Certainly no one can accuse this talented crop of thespians of being one-hit wonders on the big screen. After all, one does not become a recipient of an Academy Award by just sheer luck and charitable fortune.
As a native Bostonian and life long New Englander, I felt compelled to spotlight those Massachusetts-born and bred actors from the same region that had ultimate success on the big screen in winning the Oscar for their acting achievement and contribution to the motion picture industry.

Today is Barbra Streisand‘s 72nd birthday, and like Elton John last month, coming up with a tribute to one of the greatest performers of all time is daunting. (But we have tried).
So this year, let’s take a look at Barbra’s lesser-known songbook. Everyone knows “People” and “Evergreen,” but what about the minor hits we treasure, the singles that got lost in the wake of her mega-hits.
What are your favorite forgotten Barbra songs?

5. Any Of The Singles From Emotion
After the Yentl soundtrack, Barbra made a return to contemporary pop with 1984′s Emotion, which became her lowest charting album in a decade, and garnered some of the worst reviews of her career. Coincidentally, it’s one of my favorite Barbra albums. The first single Left In The Dark was an hysterical melodrama produced by the king of glorious wretched excess Jim Steinman,...

If you haven’t properly celebrated the single release of Lady Gaga and Christina Aguilera‘s “Do What U Want” rendition, repent and get going. And look at this — Rihanna and Shakira are collaborating on a very soon-to-be-released duet too! This calls for a celebration: the 10 best female-female duets. It’s something of a slim genre, which is a shame, but these 10 efforts are nothing but certified classics.
10. Dionne Warwick and Celia Cruz, “Do You Know the Way to San Jose?”
Controversial first pick since we’re obviously familiar with the original, but Dionne’s revamp of the single best Hal David/Burt Bacharach composition with salsa queen Celia Cruz is lively and addictive. The song may tout San Jose, but to me this is the ideal track for a solo road trip to Palm Springs. Not that I’d know anything about it.

Bette Davis. No doubt the name instantly brings to mind Kim Carnes’ earworm ‘Bette Davis Eyes’, which has been covered by artists ranging from Gwyneth Paltrow to Brandon Flowers and Taylor Swift. Ah yes, those spellbinding, haunting heavy-cast eyes. They bewitched countless men and are part of our cultural zeitgeist. Bette Davis was so much more than the sum of her parts though. Her tenacity, independence, unique idiosyncrasies, and artistic instincts had and have no equal, even today. She has been labeled a diva and an outright bitch, but she is unquestionably a trailblazer and an icon in every sense.
This “Noirvember” Tiff Cinematheque’s senior programmer James Quandt has curated a divine tribute to the classy dame (labeled The Hard Way:The Films of Bette Davis), highlighting fifteen of her most memorable roles.

Jane Austen Will Have Her Revenge: Hess’ Debut a Pandering, Middle Class Courting Cipher
Jerusha Hess, screenwriter of Napoleon Dynamite, which her brother Jared Hess directed, turns her to sights to the adaptation of Shannon Hale’s successful novel, Austenland for her directorial debut. If 2007’s The Jane Austen Book Club didn’t feel enough like a resolutely ridiculous enough caper to the insane Austen mania that’s had book clubs and perennial film adaptations going strong for several decades, Hess’ film confirms the disturbing social tendencies reinforced by these mob think Austen obsessions on display here. Instead of exploring some of the subtext of what’s really going on here though, Hess rides the film into broad romantic territory. While there’s certainly an audience for this corrosive reinforcement of gender norms, for those that have been clued in to the cruel crookery of what real love looks like...

RuPaul's Drag Race was a charity case last night, arranging its eight remaining queens in a supergroup (a la USA for Africa) and forcing everyone to croon a bombastic ballad called "Can I Get An Amen?" Queens like Ivy Winters and Jinkx Monsoon proved they could've sung right alongside Cyndi Lauper and Kim Carnes, but other queens felt short -- especially Jade Jolie, a.k.a. Josh Green of Gainesville, Fl, who seemed to shrink next to the stronger singers in the competition. Eventually Jade faced off in a tough lip-sync against Coco Montrese, but Coco's explosive connection to the Pointer Sisters classic "I'm So Excited" kept her in the game. That meant Jade Jolie sashayed away, back to the adorable land of Lite Brite-colored wigs from whence she came.
We caught up with Jade Jolie to discuss her fights with Alyssa and Roxxy Andrews, the terror of public singing,...

It's a big day, guys: I'm going in for a very quick, on-camera interview with Barbra Streisand and Seth Rogen, who star in the upcoming mother/son road trip comedy The Guilt Trip. Because I don't have too much time with the "Stoney End" sorceress, I want to be sure my questions are succinct and interesting enough to make for an edifying (and entertaining!) five minutes. If you've got something fabulous and provocative to pose, I'd be happy to include it in my interrogation. I'm an impressive Barbra aficionado, but if you're a rabid black belt in Streisandthropology, I want you to have a voice here too. This is an important moment! Let's do it right and leave the amateurs in the dust.
Keep in mind that I'm interviewing Barbra and Seth together, so if you've got a question that I can ask both of them, that'd be great. Naturally...

Back at the beginning of July in the daily Briefs, I started the Official snicks Top 100 Lost Hits of The 80's, spotlighting the 100 greatest minor hits of that decade. The songs you don't hear on any 80's nostalgia show. Songs that missed the top ten, or top twenty ... or top forty, and over the last five months I hope some of these forgotten gems may have rung a long dormant bell, or for younger readers, provided a pop music history lesson.
Here is the complete list, including my favorite lost song of the decade. Thank you for taking this 80's road trip with me ... but it's not over yet! I'll be featuring a new Lost Hit once a week in the Wednesday Briefs, so the history lesson will continue!
Let the countdown commence, and remember ... keep your feet on the ground, and keep reaching for the stars!
