Channeling the aesthetic and urgency of a driven multimedia creator, “Wojnarowicz” chronicles the too-short life of a determinedly “outsider” artist who was among the most furiously outspoken victims of the AIDS epidemic. Chris McKim’s documentary is largely composed of materials from the late subject’s archives, woven into a collage whole that is equal parts biography, vintage agitprop and objet d’art, plus surviving associates’ audio reminiscences.
While the confrontative nature suggested by the film’s full title is amply represented, there’s also considerable beauty and invention on display here, as often there was even in David Wojnarowicz’s most enraged work. Kino Lorber is currently distributing the feature to virtual cinemas via its Kino Marquee program, with home-formats release planned for May 18.
McKim starts in 1989, when his protagonist had already been diagnosed as HIV-positive, writing, “I realized I’d contracted a diseased society as well.” One symptom...

Near the top of the list of movies we do not recommend as a date picture, no way no how, Wes Craven’s gut-wrencher presented a real problem for critics. Whose movie exactly is this? The producer wanted a commercially daring pornographic gore shocker. The writer-director envisioned a political scream of rage against America he considered Evil. Is the film an abomination, or an honest reflection of society in chaos?

Thriller remake The Manchurian Candidate is a great showcase for director Jonathan Demme's use of the camera to evoke fear and empathy...
Iraq War veteran Ben Marco wakes up on a train with a jolt. For a second, he sees an apparition from the past sitting directly opposite him. Marco blinks, and the figure vanishes.

Jonathan Demme’s remake of The Manchurian Candidate is full of small yet jarring sequences like this: moments which take place in a familiar setting, but with something strange or somehow out of place thrown in. Not long after Marco wakes up on the train, he strikes up a begrudging conversation with a young woman, Rose (Kimberly Elise), who says she's seen him around. Rose appears to have taken...

For some of the oldsters out there they may recall the 1973 Gamble & Huff-produced R&B hit single “I’ll Always Love My Mama” by the musical group The Intruders. This musical anthem was certainly a lyrical tribute to caring mothers and how their sacrifices shaped our childhood and adulthood. This finger-snapping song definitely captured the spirit of motherly guidance.
Naturally film has had its share of depicting motherhood over the decades. In fact, mothers of all types are presented before our eyes in packages of being nurturing, notorious, nutty, naive and nonsensical. However, there is something so special about the mother-son relationship that rivals the father-daughter dynamic. We have our share of proud Mama’s boys out there roaming about in society.

It's that time of year again when we take a moment to honor our moms. And how great they are, right? Well, here at Dread Central we can turn even the most loving moms into something horrific, and in celebration of Mother's Day, we bring you Horror's 11 Most Memorable Moms!
Read on… and eat your vegetables for chrissake!
Okay, so not all the moms on this list are psychotic killers; some are heroes, and some fall somewhere in between. But they're all great for their own reasons. As usual, we'll start out with some honorable mentions, and we certainly have some remarkable moms to speak about. We'll start with Estelle Collingwood (played by Cynthia Carr) in the original Last House on the Left. Only a mother's love could drive a person to bite a guy's Johnson off as an act of revenge! Another great justice-seeking mother was Kate (played by Vera Farmiga) in Orphan.

Even before Meryl Streep was awarded her third Oscar last night, there was no denying that she is among the most honored movie actors of our (or any) time. Since co-starring in The Deer Hunter 34 years ago, she has been nominated for 17 Oscars, a Ruthian record that appears unbreakable. She’s five nominations ahead of Jack Nicholson, who’s tied with Katharine Hepburn for second place of all time, and 36-year-old Kate Winslet is only one-third of the way to eclipsing Streep, who, by the way, is far from finished (See: the upcoming Great Hope Springs, with Tommy Lee Jones; and August: Osage County,...

From girlish flirt to monstrous sociopath, the former Pm has been variously interpreted on screen
"I don't really see her as a villain," says Meryl Streep. "People are driven by what they think is right [and] certainty is just so attractive in people … It's so nice not to have to listen … Unfortunately, it leads to fanaticism." Streep, I should point out, is not talking about her forthcoming performance as Margaret Thatcher in The Iron Lady, Phyllida Lloyd's portrait of the former Pm in the run-up to the Falklands war. She is in fact discussing Eleanor Shaw, the fearsome politician, mother and all-round nut-job she played in the 2004 remake of The Manchurian Candidate. Even so, you could do worse than check out this interview for an inkling of how she may approach her latest role. "There were," she says, "very specific public personalities that I was inspired by in creating this character.
