Manchester United striker Robin Van Persie believes his side are still the one’s to beat as the new Barclays Premier League season fast approaches.
Van Persie was speaking to ITV after yesterday’s Community Shield in which United cruised to a comfortable 2-0 victory over Championship side Wigan Athletic at Wembley.
The win handed David Moyes his first trophy in his managerial career and therefore his first since he replaced Sir Alex Ferguson at Old Trafford.
And despite a difficult build-up to the new season with the lack of a marquee signing and speculation surrounding the future of Wayne Rooney, Van Persie – who scored both goals this afternoon – insists United should still be considered the favourites this season.
He said: “We’re doing really well and I believe in this team” adding “We are the champions and based on that we are clear favourites.”
Around 80,000 spectators made the...

Wigan have confirmed James McClean has moved to the Lactics from Sunderland on a 3-year deal in a statement released today.
The 24-year-old Republic of Ireland winger made 59 league starts for the Black Cats, netting 7 goals. He previously played in the Republic of Ireland’s main league, the League of Ireland, for his home-town club Derry City. He has been capped 12 times for the Republic of Ireland, having previously played for Northern Ireland at U-21 level.
The Irishman is Owen Coyle’s 10th signing of the summer since the Championship outfit were relegated from the Premier League in mid-May. He’ll link up with fellow Irishman James McCarthy, as well as new signings Grant Holt, James Perch, and England international goalkeeper Scott Carson, who’ve all joined the club this summer

This season the Premier League is awash with many players filling squads and with the FIFA eligibility rules now confining a squad to only twenty five players, some are being lost into obscurity. Goalkeepers are still a well sought after commodity, if you have one in which you can back whole heartedly (think the Manchester United greats like Alex Stepney, Peter Schmeichel and Edwin van der Sar) he will be one of the most important players you will ever see on the pitch. There is definitely a down side to being a goalkeeper though, the weight of pressure and media scrutiny will confine your career for one mistake in a match can end your run with the number one shirt; Scott Carson’s misjudged the bounce of a Niko Kranjcar 30 yard drive and was left only able to parry the ball into his own net culminating in England’s 3-...

Update: This article was written before the news hit that Rio Ferdinand and Kyle Walker had been omitted from Euro 2012 selection due to their respective injuries.
Tomorrow is the start of a new beginning for the England squad, and the start of Roy Hodgson’s involvement in deciding who features for the three lions, and who has had his time. There could be shock entries in the squad, as well as shock omissions, but whichever names get officially released we need to make sure as a nation we get behind them for the good of English football, whether we agree or not.
Here is my look at the possibilities Hodgson will have been mulling over, and also my opinion on if they’re up to the task of wearing our shirt in Poland and Ukraine.

Interim England manager Stuart Pearce has announced his England squad for the friendly against Holland next week at Wembley Stadium.
The big surprise is in the inclusion of Sunderland striker Fraizer Campbell, who has only just come back from injury for the Wearsiders and has two goals to his name since his return to the side last month. Though one of those goals was an absolute wonder strike against Norwich.
Campbell seems to have been preferred over Liverpool’s mega signing Andy Carroll who has struggled for goals this season, and the Black Cats forward has earnt his first ever call-up.
Elsewhere, Steven Gerrard is back in the England squad for the first time since November 2010′s friendly against France, Micah Richards returns to the squad, along with Tom Cleverley who is selected again having just recovered from injury and is looking for his first Senior England cap.

It was yet another nothing of a game for England in their latest International friendly against Sweden, but Fabio Capello will be pleased his side comfortably beat their fellow Euro 2012 peers in a snoozefest at Wembley tonight. It was England’s first victory against Sweden in 43 years (some 12 matches) but I imagine there were very few contests between the sides as low-key and tame as this.
The winning goal came just after twenty minutes after a long England build-up with Leighton Baines and Stewart Downing combining well on the left hand side, and the later Liverpool winger putting in a beautiful cross for Gareth Barry to score the third English goal of his career. Replays showed the goal was scored via a deflection off Swedish defender Daniel Majstorovic and Barry’s header was probably going wide but it would be a cruel strike to take off him. So hopefully the...

Fabio Capello has announced the full England squad that will travel to Montenegro on Friday, with the hope of securing their place in the European finals next summer. England only need a point to be guaranteed a place in the finals that will take place in Poland and Ukraine next June.
The most notable absentees in this squad are Rio Ferdinand and Steven Gerrard – with Rio out for ‘fitness’ reasons and Gerrard only just having come back from injury after a 6 month absence and, wisely, he will not be risked.
Danny Welbeck and Bobby Zamora have earned another England call-up (both performing excellently this season for their clubs) and Kyle Walker being promoted from the u-21 set-up after an excellent performance this weekend, scoring the winning goal in the North London derby yesterday.
The Three Lions will be out to prove what they can seemingly do in their sleep – qualify with flying colours.

Six games into the season and we are beginning to see the strengths and weaknesses of the newly promoted teams as well as those whose top flight status is in jeopardy. In this article I’ll be looking at the chances of survival for said clubs, as well as a brief analysis of their summer window activity. So here goes…
Blackburn Rovers
With Venky’s millions behind them, many thought Rovers would be transformed from a mediocre lower-mid table club to European contenders. However with the rather odd appointment of Steve Kean as manager (a man who had never managed a professional football team) things haven’t really changed too much at Ewood Park. After a very poor start to the 2011/12 season, Blackburn find themselves in 18th place. On paper there is enough quality in Kean’s squad to survive, but players such as Rubén Rochina and Junior Hoilett may...
