It seems that people love a good spy story but it remains to be seen if viewers will love TNT's new Agent X TV series. Will it run as long as the James Bond movie series or will it last about as long as George Lazenby did as Bond? Will the show be cancelled or renewed for a second season? Stay tuned.
On Agent X, newly elected Vice President Natalie Maccabee (Sharon Stone) learns that there is a secret section in the Us Constitution. It gives the Vice President authority over highly-trained and secret operative, -- in this instance, John Case (Jeff Hephner) -- who can handle sensitive cases that the FBI and the CIA can't. The rest of the cast includes Gerald McRaney, Jamey Sheridan, John Shea, Mike Colter, and James Earl Jones.

[Warning: Major spoilers ahead from Sunday's episode, "Red John." Do not proceed if you have not watched.] The Mentalist's Red John case is now closed. After putting the Red John spotlight on California Bureau of Investigation Director Gale Bertram (Michael Gaston), he turned out not to be the madman Patrick Jane (Simon Baker) had been searching for the past several years. Who was Red John? He was Sheriff Tom McAllister (Xander Berkeley), who had been one of the three who presumably died in the blast during "Fire and Brimstone." "Red Lacquer Nail Polish" wasn't as much fun as I had hoped it would be. Perhaps my expectations were what left me disappointed.
The creepy, overgrown mansion had so much potential. Even the security guard seemed freaked out just being there. When Jane slyly told Lisbon, "Ladies first" as they entered the house worthy of a horror movie, I found myself hoping the Cbi team would be forced to spend a lot more time there. Unfortunately that didn't happen.
With the entire body burned to ash, the coroner began explaining how a human being can be turned into a fatty wax candle. When he proclaimed, "Isn't that awful" he had a strange but gleeful smile on his face. Jane was right. The guy was a ghoul.
The investigation quickly turned to Elise's nephew. Although he wasn't actually guilty of anything, I disliked Curtis the moment he referred to the men...

It’s official. After over four years of speculation, we now know for a fact that Red John is a character we’ve already seen on The Mentalist (at least that’s how I read it). Or as Jane (Simon Baker) said in the episodes closing moments, “he’s someone I know.”
I wasn’t surprised at all that Jane was attempting to break Lorelei (Emmanuelle Chriqui) out of prison. It’s well documented the lengths he’s willing to go to in order to catch Red John, if he didn’t make that clear back when he shot a man dead, then it’s time for you to reevaluate your thoughts on the character.
The Mentalist once again delved into its endless pool of brilliant guest stars, this time bringing back Brett Stiles (the magnificent Malcolm McDowell) for his fourth appearance on the show, albeit for one scene.

The Mentalist featured its share of schemers, as a bank robbery went bad in "Not One Red Cent."
But before we go there, let's talk about shoes. At first I was surprised that Jane was going to wait for his shoes, but then again the sign did say "While U Wait" shoe repair and I could see Jane being the type to take them up on it.
I thought Patrick trying out the foot powder was funny, but those loaner shoes were so un-Jane-like I laughed every time I saw them. The very thought of loaner shoes skeeves me out a bit but I suppose Jane didn't have much of a choice. And as much as he surprisingly made the best of it, he did consider stealing a dead man's footwear when he looked through Ernie's bedroom.
Back to the murderer. I assumed there was a personal reason that Ernie ended up dead.

The Mentalist Season 5 kicks off with ‘The Crimson Ticket’, in what eventually turns out to be the week after the events of the Season 4 finale ‘The Crimson Hat’. As I did with that episode, this will be a large recap and review, something I’ll be doing for all episodes considered ‘big’ (finale, premiere etc.) or ‘important’ (such as the upcoming 100th episode). All other episodes however, will be accompanied by a regular sized review much like my piece on 4.22 ‘So Long, and Thanks For All The Red Snapper’ last season.
We start with the Cbi and FBI butting heads. Tension between the two bureaus exists for a few reasons, 1. They blame each other for the botched operation that lead to the death of Luther Wainwright (Michael Rady) and ruined their chances of catching Red John, 2. They are fighting over custody of Lorelei Martins (Emmanuelle Chriqui...

With filming now underway on the latest season of the hit CBS procedural ‘The Mentalist’, I have decided to take a quick look at a few of the reasons to get excited for the September premiere. I could ramble all day long on just why the show as a whole is great, so I have limited myself to just five (of many) reasons to be excited, most of which are specific or new to the coming season.
Enjoy.
1. Red John Information Is Coming
Red John Is still standing tall as The Mentalist’s central mystery after once again out smarting Patrick Jane (Simon Baker) in the Season 4 finale ‘The Crimson Hat’ (read my review here). The enigma of this serial killer and Patrick Jane’s quest to take him down has always been one of the most compelling plot lines in the shows armoury; it’s certainly the most important.
Enjoy.

The Mentalist (TV) revolves around the concept of a con-man turned investigator for the California Bureau of Investigation (Cbi). Patrick Jane (Simon Baker) was the consummate con-man. A brilliant showman, Jane made his living pretending to talk to the dead to console the living. And he made a damn good living at it too. But like all over-confident charlatans, Jane would eventually anger the wrong person, in this case, mysterious serial killer Red John, whom Jane openly mocks on a TV talk show. Red John decides to give Jane a taste humility and butchers his wife and child. After a breakdown, Jane lends his talents to the Cbi, increasing their flagging closed-case rates in exchange for being able to work the Red John case himself. Jane seems to have always enjoyed the puzzles the most, and we aren't really sure if the idea of bringing justice to the victims or...

Jane's little white lies are starting to come back on him. How long did he really think he could make Agent Darcy (Catherine Dent) believe that he'd really killed the Dark Lord, Red John? While Red John might be the B plot of this episode, the A plot revolves around the fashion design world, Chinese mob and some models and photographers who don't have a real good grasp on reality. Jane (Simon Baker) arrives on the scene of the murder of Wyck Theissens – who picks these names? – a local fashion guru who's been stabbed with a pair of scissors. He discovers Wyck's secret room of pretty dresses in the loft, and Lisbon (Robin Tunney) wonders why he'd hide his couture and why there was a gold feather shoved in his mouth. The owner of the warehouse where Wyck's loft is, Mr. Lu, is skittish about helping the cops, which is...

Did anyone actually care about the murder case this week? I know I didn't. "Little Red Book" was all about the shifting relationships of these characters and where they're headed next.
The world is still off its axis for our Cbi crew. Jane is allowed back as a consultant, but his team is disbanded and Lisbon is facing termination. Bertram has to blame someone for the Red John debacle and he's putting it all on Teresa's tiny shoulders.
When Patrick visits Teresa at her home, she's handling it well. As usual she's strong and downright stoic. She says she'll be fine. Of course she will, because Jane is determined to save her.

Patrick Jane (portrayed by Simon Baker), as far as we can tell, was born into a life of showmanship. He grew up in a Carney's life, traveling throughout the Midwest in various carnivals with his father, who touted the young Jane as a "Psychic Medium". Jane played the part well, perfecting his art as a swindler getting people to believe he was talking to their dead loved ones for a hefty fee. Through flashbacks, we do see that young Patrick has something of a conscience (lord knows where that conscience went later in life) and when his father tries to bilk a dying girl out of her grandmother's money, Jane has had enough. Somewhere along the way, Jane decides he's better off as a solo act and leaves his father. He meets Angela Ruskin (Maxine Bahns), daughter of carnival royalty who ran/rented the large steel rides, and they run off together.

Kevin Bernhardt adapted the script. Tove Christensen, Kirk D'Amico, Michael Mailer and Alvaro Longoria will produce.

Returning for another sporadic visit to our cinema screens, Hayden Christensen has signed on to play the lead in David R. Ellis' thriller, The Genesis Code.
The screenplay has been written by Kevin Bernhardt based on John Case's novel of the same name. The story follows former national security expert Joe Lassiter (Christensen), who begins investigating the murder of his sister and her young son and soon discovers that a religious sect called The Shadow of the Cross may be involved. With the help of his sister's friend Ana, they follow the clues to a clinic in the mountains of Italy, where a terrifying secret experiment has been successfully conducted that if revealed would shake the very foundations of the Church.
It all sounds very Da Vinci Code to us, and you know how that adaptation turned out, but Christensen is a likely hero so we'll reserve judgement.

Erstwhile Anakin Hayden Christensen has been absent from our screens for quite some time now, but he's just signed on to star in thriller The Genesis Code, based on the novel of the same name, for director David R. Ellis. Not to be confused with the Genesis device or the Book of Genesis, this Genesis Code tells the story of Joe Lassiter, an ex-fbi investigator who starts to investigate the murder of his sister and her young son, and discovers several other connected deaths. The signs point to the involvement of a religious cult called The Shadow of the Cross - but why? How? Etc. Think twists, turns, and an ending you're going to figure out about half an hour before Lassiter, if the book's anything to go by. They're casting rather younger than the character is written with Christensen, but apart from that he's not a terrible fit for your standard hero role.

Have they created mutants or something or is this a Resident Evil copy? Similar to Vincenzo Natali's Splice, this thriller brings up some interesting questions concerning the use of DNA material and the ethics of genetic engineering. Few films in recent years have yielded such widely differing reactions—among critics and paying punters alike—than Martin Scorsese's Shutter Island. On the very same day that the psychological thriller was ecstatically reviewed by three contributors to Radio 4's Front Row programme, I received a caustic text-message from a London-based friend of mine who's a veteran freelance contributor to numerous respected outlets: "Embalmed tosh. Already penned in - not pencilled - as one of the year's worst."
But there's one group which has been pretty much unanimous in its praise of Scorsese's phantasmagoric potboiler—or rather, one specific aspect of it. I refer to those legions of hapless individuals who clean up movie auditoria, scooping up the remnants of our cheesy nachos and soggy popcorn. Sometimes referred to as "ushers," these folk hover patiently until the public have exited the cinema-screen—which, these days, is usually a matter...

Tonight’s episode begins with the Cbi team being called to a graveyard very early in the morning where a body was found. Under normal circumstances, finding a body in a graveyard might be a normal occurrence. This body, however, was recently frozen into a pose and placed in a mausoleum naked, with a vase of flowers between his legs – certainly puzzling.
Meanwhile back at the Cbi offices, Bosco and his team are burning the midnight oil on the Red John case. Rebecca, Bosco’s secretary, is asked to go get them coffee.
When the others arrive back at the office in the morning, they stumble upon a gruesome crime scene — Bosco and three of the Cbi agents on his team have been shot. Only Bosco is still barely clinging to life as Jane and Lisbon scramble to get him help.

Tonight's episode of The Mentalist, "His Red Right Hand" saw the return of Patrick Jane's nemesis Red John and plenty of shocks for the audience.
"His Red Right Hand" begins sweetly enough, with Rigsby and Van Pelt sharing a moment cuddling in bed before they're both phoned separately by Lisbon. They arrive at a cemetary building, where a dead and frozen man has been found naked–his modesty preserved by a carefully arranged bouquet of yellow roses. While on the scene, Jane gets called by Bosco, who tells him to come see him as soon as he can.
The Cbi returns to the department headquarters, joining Bosco's secretary Rebecca as she's bringing coffee to her boss. The coffee is soon spilled, as Rebecca discovers Bosco and two of his agents gunned down in his office. Stunned by the bloody crime scene, Jane stands immobile as Lisbon tries to revive Bosco,...

Bosco and his team raid a house where a kidnapper is allegedly holding a hostage, but when they break in, the Cbi team is who they find. On the floor is a mummified corpse wrapped in plastic. As the shock wears off, a surprised Jane asks the team to “lower the guns, please.”
Back at the Cbi headquarters, each group explains to the other why they showed up at the house. Bosco’s team was led to the house by the trail of a missing heiress. Lisbon and her team showed up after getting a call from the coroner that a body was in the house. It just so happens that this body was of a kidnapped man from a wealthy family. Putting two and two together, Jane concludes that perhaps the teams are looking for the same kidnappers. What Jane wasn’t counting on, however, was the Chief Manelli...

The Mentalist airs a new episode this Thursday night.
While this may be good news for viewers, it won't be for Patrick Jane.
He actually gets sent to prison by Bosco after bugging the boss' office and sticking his nose too deeply into the Red John Case.
Below, we've posted a few photos from "Black Gold and Red Blood," which will also feature Jane trying to help his co-workers with an investigation, despite the fact that he's behind bars...

The Mentalist season two opener, "Redemption", begins with Teresa Lisbon (Robin Tunney) and Patrick Jane (Simon Baker) arriving at a crime scene in a department store. The police officer briefing them thanks them for helping the homicide department out on their case load, and then proceeds to mock Jane for "that Esp crap".
Of course Jane always takes any criticism as a challenge. The officer shows them the body of a 34 year old man, and tells him that store security was able to gather up all of the people in the area at the time of the murder. Jane kneels down by the body, literally sniffing around the crime scene. Asked tauntingly by the officer if the victim told him whodunit, Jane replies with a list of facts about the victim–including that he was a ladies man, went after moneyed cougars with moderate success, and played the guitar–not well.

What better way to show the irreverent nature of Patrick Jane (Simon Baker) than to start off The Mentalist "The Scarlet Letter" with a yawn. Apparently sleeping through Lisbon's (Robin Tunney) briefing in the car, Jane awakens to find the Cbi team on a bridge in Sacramento. He's quickly briefed by Cho (Tim Kang) and Rigsby (Owain Yeoman) that a state senator's aide named Kristin Marley has been found dead underneath the bridge. Since she was rumored to be having an affair with the senator's husband, it's not clear at first whether it's a suicide or murder.
Throughout the investigation, Jane and the Cbi team find out several things about Kristin's personal life. First, that her step-brother was trying to force her into being his alibi for a car-jacking. Second, that she was a romantic who dreamed about being a senator and traveling to far-off places. She collected mementos from her travels,...

Where will the second season of The Mentalist go? Will we focus on Red John the whole time or will we get cases of the week until we have a Red John episode? It looks like it's going to be more of the latter (though there's a big plot development concerning the Red John case in this season opener), and that's just fine.
I do wish the cases were more Columbo or Murder, She Wrote-ish, though.Continue reading The Mentalist: Redemption

The season premiere episode of The Mentalist, "Redemption", begins with our favorite master of observation Patrick Jane (Simon Baker) up to his old tricks. The Cbi are called in to help out the homicide department on a department store murder. Detective Lisbon (Robin Tunney) warns Jane to take his theatrical antics down a notch (or three), but Jane's never been one to listen to authority.
Jane gathers together the witnesses (suspects), and in Agatha Christie style, narrows them down with random questions and observations of their behavior. Using a trick he pulled on Van Pelt (Amanda Righetti) last season, he uses the guilty party's reactions to his movements to discover the murder weapon and the killer. All in a day's work.
Back at the office, Jane and Lisbon get called on the carpet for Jane's unorthodox and unprofessional crime solving methods. Minelli (Gregory Itzin) tells them they're too focused on...
