The Geffen Playhouse has a new artistic director: Oscar winner Tarell Alvin McCraney.
Announced Tuesday by the Westwood nonprofit theater’s board of directors, McCraney’s appointment is effective immediately and his first order of business is joining Geffen staff to build a slate for the 2024-2025 season. His duties will include programming “new works along with re-envisioned classics with a focus on innovative storytelling, community engagement and audience experience,” per the Geffen. He’ll also be charged with setting the artistic course for the Geffen’s Gil Cates and Audrey Skirball Kenis theaters and leading the artistic and production teams.
McCraney replaces Matt Shakman in the role. Shakman, a director of TV, film and theater projects, joined the Geffen as artistic director in 2017. In August 2022, he announced he would be departing come February 2023, and a committee commenced a months-long search for a replacement.

As Westwood’s Geffen Playhouse celebrated the opening day of The Inheritance on Sunday, there was a special guest seated in the audience all day long: Matthew López. And what a day-turned-night it was.
The Tony-winning playwright turned up for an epic day at the Geffen, which presented part one and part two back-to-back with a block party in between.
The day’s schedule kicked off as doors opened at noon for a cocktail hour that preceded the first performance, from 1-4:30 p.m. An outdoor picnic followed from 4:30-6 p.m. featuring boxed lunches, an ice cream truck, a coffee cart and other treats sprinkled about on Le Conte Avenue, a spread that also featured a production-approved cherry tree. Then a musical performance and DJ in the Geffen courtyard from 6-7 p.m. followed by Part 2 and a post-show party...

“I’ve always been a fan of the circus and the Oscars are the greatest circus.” Those were the words of the late Gil Cates, who expertly produced 14 consecutive Oscar shows. I thought of Cates the other day when the chief of ABC Entertainment commented that the chaos surrounding the upcoming Oscar show might actually be a good omen. “The Oscars are in the conversation,” said Karey Burke, adding: “The lack of clarity is compelling.”
The Oscar problems are well known – fights about host, format, etc. But those of us who’ve attended Oscar shows over the years (I’ve been to 20) wonder whether the network may be working against itself by tightening the show and imposing discipline, instead of embracing the chaos.

The Geffen Playhouse will honor Dick Van Dyke and Lin-Manuel Miranda at its 16th annual “Backstage at the Geffen” fundraiser on May 19.
The event supports the theater’s mission to produce original, quality work and raises funds for its award-winning education and community engagement programs. The programs bring live theater to more than 15,000 disadvantaged youth, seniors and veterans annually.
Blending unscripted, surprise performances and storytellers sharing songs and personal tales of life behind the scenes, the Geffen gala is not a typical fundraising effort. This year’s edition will be held in the Gil Cates Theater at the Geffen Playhouse and hosted for the second time by Aisha Tyler. Last year’s gala raised more than $1 million, allowing the Geffen to expand its literacy, high school, veterans and Lights Up programs.

Have you ever dreamed of becoming a serial killer only to realize that your commitment to a full-time job is keeping you from achieving said aspirations? That's the case of Colin Hanks' character Ben in Lucky... until he wins the lottery, marries an annoying gold-digger (played by hilarious Movieline heroine Ari Graynor), and starts knocking off lookalike blondes. Take a look at the upcoming indie from Gil Cates Jr. (cousin of Phoebe!) ahead.

It was recently announced that Colin Hanks would join the murderous cable hit "Dexter" for its sixth season, but few people realize Hanks has already dabbled in murder. Of blondes, specifically.
The new trailer for the oddball comedy "Lucky" showcases Hanks' darkest side -- which ends up resulting in a little bloodshed. His character Ben starts off down in the dumps, but after winning the lottery, everything he's been looking for falls on to his lap. He's made million, won the girl of his dreams (an obnoxious receptionist played by Ari Graynor) and, most importantly, found a way to indulge in his favorite past time: murder.
"Lucky" looks like a weird little cookie -- why does Ben murder people? why do his victims all look like his money-grubbing wife? why is she helping him murder blonde bombshells? -- but the combo of the trailer's bizarre tone and Hanks' usual, charismatic...

"I married you for your money and you like to kill people!" An official trailer for an indie comedy called Lucky has hit the web via Yahoo. Directed by Gil Cates Jr., Lucky stars Colin Hanks as a "wannabe serial killer" who surprisingly wins the lotto. The girl of his dreams marries him for his money and, well, things get out of hand. The girl is Ari Graynor and the cast also includes Ann-Margret and Jeffrey Tambor. This actually looks quite fun, I think the young Hanks is quite a good actor and always brings some spunk to his roles. I hadn't heard much about this film before today, but check out the trailer below and give this a shot. Colin Hanks, Arrested Development's Jeffrey Tambor, Grumpy Old Men's Ann-Margaret and Fringe's Ari Graynor have signed up to star in Lucky, a new indie comedy that starts shooting in Iowa next week. Yes, Iowa. See it's not all glamour being a movie star. The film focuses on a "fledgling serial killer" (Hanks, we're guessing) who "wins the lottery and attempts to pursue his lifelong crush". We're guessing that's pursuing her with a bunch of roses rather than a steak knife, but only time will tell.Gil Cates Jr. is directing, but the script was written by Saturday Night Live's Ken Sublette, so we're guessing it's black comedy rather than thriller-horror. Since we've always rather liked Hanks, we're looking forward to seeing him get the lead for once, so we'll be keeping an eye out for this.

Ten/Four Pictures will be bringing the horror audience two new films very soon. First of the two that is coming is really the first of the films that the founders produced together called "Order Of Chaos". That film stars Milo Ventimiglia, Rhys Coiro, Mimi Rogers and Samantha Mathis. "Order Of Chaos" chronicles the duplicitous relationship between a naive attorney (Coiro) and a neighbor-colleague (Ventimiglia) and their fierce competition to move up in the firm and get ahead in life. I'm going to assume that what they mean by getting "ahead in life" they mean murder. The second film that Ten/Four will be releasing is called "Lucky" and sounds more like it will fit in with the horror crowd. The movie is billed as a dark comedy directed by Gil Cates Jr. about a serial killer who...

When his beautiful fiancé orders him around and his ball-busting boss uses threats as motivation, John never makes a sound. Eager to do right, he is a perpetual .yes man.. Rick Carlson is not. A smooth talking, coercive .no man., Rick turns John.s life upside-down when he not...
