The 2022 Emmy ballot for Best Comedy Directing lists 178 episodes, so there will be seven nominees. As a refresher, last year’s winner was “Hacks” (“There Is No Line” by Lucia Aniello) and the other nominees were “The Flight Attendant” (“In Case of Emergency” by Susanna Fogel), “B Positive” (“Pilot” by James Burrows) and “Mom” (“Scooby-Doo Checks and Salisbury Steak” by James Widdoes), plus “Ted Lasso” with three episodes.
With the exception of “Mom,” which ended last year, all of these series are back in the running. “Hacks” once again went with a solo submission (as it did with writing), with Aniello defending her title with the episode “There Will Be Blood.” After getting three slots last year, “Ted Lasso” takes its shot with four episode submissions, including nominees Lowney (“Inventing The Pyramid Of Success”) and Delaney (“No Weddings and a Funeral”), along with Erica Dunton (“Rainbow”) and Sam Jones (“Beard...

If CBS comedy series How We Roll is renewed for a second season, it will return without executive producer David Hollander. Production on the Pete Holmes sitcom’s freshman season has been completed but if the series gets renewed for Season 2, Hollander won’t be involved, the network and How We Roll producer CBS Studios said in a response to an inquiry by Deadline.
As Deadline reported Saturday, Hollander, the developer, director, executive producer and showrunner of the upcoming Showtime series American Gigolo, produced by sibling Paramount Television Studios, was let go from the reboot of the popular 1980 movie after an investigation into allegations of misconduct. Underscoring the seriousness of the claims, both Showtime and Paramount TV Studios severed ties with the veteran showrunner.
“David Hollander is no longer on the drama series American Gigolo and Paramount Television Studios no longer has a producing relationship with him,” a spokesperson told Deadline in a statement Saturday.

CBS has debuted the trailer for Chuck Lorre’s “United States of Al,” and it’s going to be quite a culture shock for the characters.
The premise of the show sees Awalmir, a.k.a. Al (Adhir Kalyan), arriving in America to begin a new life. He is staying with marine combat veteran Riley (Parker Young) for whom he worked with as an interpreter in Afghanistan.
Hilarity (hopefully) ensues.
In the trailer, when Riley picks his kid’s godfather up from the airport, Al announces that he wants to experience all that America has to offer.
“I want to see everything: Washington, D.C., Las Vegas, and what’s the name of that place that sells peanut butter and brings it to you on a forklift,” Awalmir asks his host.
“Costco,” Riley replies.

It is set to premiere on the network later this season.
David Goetsch and Maria Ferrari are writers and creators on the series from Warner Bros. Television and Chuck Lorre Production, with Lorre serving as executive producer alongside Reza Aslan and Mahyad Tousi. Mark Cendrowski directed the pilot.
In addition to Kalyan and Young, Kelli Goss, Dean Norris and Elizabeth Alderfer also star.

CBS is adding a mind-boggling fifth Chuck Lorre show to its schedule.
The network has issued a series order for “United States of Al,” a new comedy from Lorre and writer-creators David Goetsch and Maria Ferrari (both of whom worked with Lorre on “Big Bang Theory”). “United States of Al” is set to become the latest addition to the 2020-21 broadcast season, which has proved highly disjointed due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
News of the “United States of Al” pick up comes over a year after the series was first announced as being in development. It stars Adhir Kalyan and Parker Young and centers around the friendship between Riley (Young), a Marine combat veteran struggling to readjust to civilian life in Ohio, and Awalmir (Al) (Kalyan), the Interpreter who served with his unit in Afghanistan and has just arrived to start a new life in America.

ABC will not be proceeding with a second season of United We Fall, its family comedy starring Will Sasso and Christina Vidal-Mitchell. The news is not surprising — the sitcom, a leftover from the 2019-20 season, got a summer burn-off run. Still, United We Fall performed respectably for a summer comedy over its eight-episode run.
The series, which debuted July 15 and aired its finale on Aug. 26, was produced by Sony Pictures Television and ABC Studios. The swift cancellation is an illustration why Sony TV is getting out of the network comedy business over the outdated broadcast model.
United We Fall follows the trials and tribulations of Jo and Bill (Vidal-Mitchell and Sasso), parents of two young kids, as they try to make it day to day as a functioning family. Bill’s very judgmental live-in mother (Jane Curtin) and Jo’s large Latinx Catholic family never hesitate to let the couple...

The multi-camera comedy “United We Fall” has been canceled after one season at ABC.
News of the cancellation comes about three weeks after the show’s season finale. It starred Will Sasso, Christina Vidal Mitchell, Jane Curtin, Guillermo Diaz, and Ella Grace Helton.
The series followed Jo (Vidal Mitchell) and Bill (Sasso), parents of two young kids, as they try to make it day-to-day as a functioning family. They contended with Bill’s very judgmental live-in-mother (Curtin) and Jo’s large Latinx Catholic family along with many others in their life, but the couple remained united against everyone.

ABC has set a July premiere date for the new comedy “United We Fall,” the broadcaster announced Thursday.
The family sitcom, which stars Will Sasso and Christina Vidal Mitchell, will debut on Wednesday, July 15 at 8 p.m.
Described as a profoundly realistic family sitcom, the series centers on Jo and Bill, parents of two young kids, as they try to make it day to day as a functioning family. Bill’s very judgmental live-in mother and Jo’s large Latinx Catholic family will never hesitate to let our couple know they’re seemingly screwing up, but Bill and Jo will always have each other’s backs, united against everyone – other parents, teachers, doctors, specialists, coaches, co-workers and especially their kids.

It’s been a subdued broadcast pilot season, one overshadowed by the slew of high-profile launches of new streaming services, shrouded in uncertainty over a potential writers strike and hit by fears related to the growing coronavirus outbreak. Amid the somewhat bleak overall picture, punctuated by another year-to-year decline in broadcast pilot volume, there were bright spots. Here is Deadline’s annual list of writers, producers and directors who excelled at this stage of the network development cycle. It also includes a couple of other highlights from Pilot Season 2020.

The 71st Emmy Awards are in the books, with Amazon’s “Fleabag” knocking off perennial winner “Veep” to become TV’s top comedy — among Television Academy voters, at least. “Game of Thrones” didn’t let the same happen in drama.
Amazon’s Prime Video started the night off on a real hot streak, winning the first four awards of the evening — two apiece for “Fleabag” and “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel” — and five out of the initial six.
All told, HBO won nine trophies tonight, Amazon claimed seven, and Netflix took home four. See all of Sunday’s winners and nominees below.

The 71st Primetime Emmy Awards take place on Sunday, September 22 and will air live coast-to-coast on Fox. The network has opted to follow the lead of the Oscars and go without a host. That should speed up the proceedings. Over the course of a jam-packed three hours, 27 awards will be handed out.
While that is three more awards than either the Oscars or Tonys, it represents only about a fifth of the 123 categories at the Emmys. The bulk of these — 96 in all — were bestowed at the Creative Arts Emmy Awards ceremonies on the weekend of September 14 and 15.
Last year’s big Emmy winners were HBO’s “Game of Thrones” for Best Drama Series and Amazon’s “The Marvelous Mrs. MaiseL” for Best Comedy Series. Will both shows repeat this year? “Game of Thrones,” which signed off earlier this year, is predicted to win the top trophy on the drama side for a fourth time.

Having won the Best Comedy Directing Emmy last year in an upset for the pilot of “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel,” Amy Sherman-Palladino ranks only fifth in our odds in the same race this year for work on the second season finale titled “All Alone.” “Amy Sherman-Palladino’s episode is not being taken seriously enough,” I tell fellow Gold Derby contributors Luca Giliberti and Zach Laws in a live slugfest (watch the video above) before blasting the former for ranking Daniel Palladino‘s “We’re Going to the Catskills!” episode of “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel” higher in his predictions just because the episode has “a flashier title.” I allude to Sherman-Palladino’s greater stature, “In the directing categories, as we’ve seen over the years […] they care a lot more about their names, since the names are actually on the ballot.” This contrasts categories like Best Comedy Writing in which the...

The question of whether multi-camera sitcoms are a dying breed isn’t a new one. The few remaining purveyors of the format, including “The Big Bang Theory” executive producer Chuck Lorre, have been asked that question for years.
But even as Lorre ventures into the single-camera world with such shows as the Golden Globe-winning “The Kominsky Method” and has gotten a taste of success in that arena, he’s not turning his back on multicam.
Lorre, along with Al Higgins, Eddie Gorodetsky and Gina Yashere, is behind “Bob Hearts Abishola,” a new multicam sitcom for CBS this fall that aims to balance laughs — yes, the studio audience is there, chuckling along — with the serious subject of immigration and tolerance.
Whether or not “Bob Hearts Abishola” will be awards fodder remains to be seen — there’s a fart joke within the first five minutes of the pilot, after all — but it...

Mark Cendrowski's second Emmy nomination comes with a lot of weight attached to it. The go-to director of CBS' The Big Bang Theory (he helmed 244 out of its 280 episodes) boasts one of only three nominations (including editing and technical direction) that the long-running nerdy comedy earned for its 12th and final season. The series signed off May 16 as the No. 1 scripted comedy in the adults 18-to-49 demographic and as TV's longest-running multicamera comedy ever (besting Cheers).

An edited version of this story on “The Big Bang Theory” first appeared in the Down to the Wire issue of TheWrap’s Emmy magazine.
For years, “The Big Bang Theory” seemed like the last holdout from the days when broadcast networks and multicamera sitcoms dominated the Emmy comedy categories. But the show hasn’t been nominated for Outstanding Comedy Series since 2014 — and this year, the top-rated show’s final season was recognized with just three nominations.
One was for multicamera picture editing and one for technical direction, camerawork and video control. But because of Emmy rules that reserve one spot in the Outstanding Directing for a Comedy Series category for a multicamera show, director Mark Cendrowski received his second consecutive nomination for a show in which he’s directed 244 of the 279 episodes, an average of more than 20 each year.

It wasn’t a whimper but it didn’t exactly qualify as a bang, either.
The Big Bang Theory, which concluded its historic 12-year run in May, was skipped over in the comedy and acting categories in the just-announced nominations for the 71st Emmy Awards but the CBS sit-com’s finale episode did earn three nods, including one for director Mark Cendrowski.
Cendrowski has been the definition of a stalwart presence for the hit series since the start and directed an amazing 244 of its 280 episodes. His first Emmy nomination came last year, so he closes out the career-shaping run with back-to-back nods from his peerage.
“I’m really, really proud of that episode,” Cendrowski told Deadline. “For me it was the perfect way to end the series. It’s not just another half hour of television, it was really something special.”

Spoiler Alert: This story contains details of The Big Bang Theory series finale that aired tonight.
In the end, The Big Bang Theory took the prize with a series finale that delivered satisfying surprises for all of the core characters but kept hold of the show’s taut pace, tart zingers, and deadpan irony despite all the obvious temptations to over-inflate the comedy vehicle beyond its specifications. The 279th and final episode of the history-making CBS hit comedy, which finished its 12-year mission with a picture-perfect landing that was capped, fittingly, by an award acceptance speech by Jim Parsons.
The trophy this time was the Nobel Prize medal and technically the winner was actually Parson’s on-air alter ego, Sheldon Cooper. The Southern-born brainiac and Caltech physicist has been the show’s signature character...

ABC has picked up an additional drama and comedy series for the 2019-2020 season.
The network has ordered hourlong legal drama For Life (fka Hank Steinberg/Curtis “50 Cent” Jackson Project) and multi-camera family comedy United We Fall. Both hail from Sony Pictures TV, which will co-produce with ABC Studios.
United We Fall and For Life join comedy mixed-ish and drama Untitled Cobie Smulders (aka Stumptown), both from ABC Studios, to bring ABC’s new series for next season to four so far.
Along with Untitled Cobie Smulders, which was picked up to series on Wednesday, For Life had been a frontrunner among ABC’s drama pilots. It took three extra days for the Hank Steinberg/50 Cent pilot to secure a formal order because of the now almost obligatory pre-pickup push by the broadcast networks to extract better co-production terms from independent studios.

It was clear from the beginning that this wouldn’t be an ordinary tape night at Studio 25 on the Warner Bros. lot. As the cast and crew of “The Big Bang Theory” hit the stage to prepare for their Tuesday night taping — the show’s last, after 279 episodes — moist eyes could be seen everywhere.
“Big Bang” stars like Johnny Galecki (Leonard) and Kaley Cuoco (Penny) appeared misty eyed, and hugs were frequent before “action” was called and the final episode got underway. During the evening, Galecki, Cuoco, and Kunal Nayyar (Rajesh) took turns on the mic to thank the fans in the audience, while the rest of the cast — including Jim Parsons (Sheldon), Mayim Bialik (Amy), Melissa Rauch (Bernadette) and Simon Helberg (Howard) — also got caught in the moment.

Exclusive: CBS’ comedy pilot To Whom It May Concern is recasting one of the series regular roles opposite Michael Angarano and Briga Heelan. Rules of Engagement alum Adhir Kalyan will play Tanner in the hybrid comedy from Gail Berman’s The Jackal Group, and CBS TV Studios. He replaces Raymond Ablack, who originally was cast in the role.
A decision was made during production week to take the character in a slightly reimagined direction, leading to the recasting. It is part of the normal pilot creative process that involves script and cast tweaks.
Written by Mike Metz, directed by Mark Cendrowski and showrun by Joseph Port and Joe Wiseman, To Whom It May Concern centers on Evan (Angarano) who, with the help of his group of friends, sets out to accomplish a list of challenges he wrote for himself years ago in an effort to turn around his banal life.

Exclusive: Loudermilk‘s Will Sasso and Christina Vidal (Training Day) are set as leads opposite Jane Curtin in United We Fall, ABC’s multicamera family comedy from Making History creator Julius Sharpe, Seth Gordon, Sony Pictures TV and ABC Studios.
Written by Sharpe and directed by Mark Cendrowski, United We Fall is a profoundly realistic, multicultural sitcom that shows how, when two people, Bill (Sasso) and Jo (Vidal) with young children and overzealous extended families truly love each other, barely anything is possible.
Sasso’s Bill is a confident, analytical yet funny and emotional father and husband. Bill and his wife, Jo, both have college degrees, great careers, and a solid, loving marriage. However, since having their second kid, they can barely make it out the door. He tries to hold it together because he loves his family more than anything, and, deep down, he knows his wife is slightly...
