Entering the second week of Jonathan Majors domestic violence trial, the Loki actor’s phone and texts have become central to both the prosecution and defense cases.
Put bluntly, the Manhattan District Attorney’s office and the defense team have very different perspectives on the alleged assault by Majors in late March on his then longtime girlfriend. However, as was evident today and has been clear even before the trial began on December 4, both sides admit whatever happened that night erupted out of Grace Jabbari seeing texts on the actor’s phone from another woman that read “I wish I were kissing you.”
Things escalated quickly after that.
Today, with Majors in court at the defense table, the driver of the car the duo were in when Jabbari saw those texts recounted her version of what went down.

Kwan’s 2001 film was the strongest in a wave of gay-themed Chinese films and remains a poignant work that tugs at audience heartstrings
At the start of Stanley Kwan’s masterly 2001 melodrama, entrepreneur Chen Handong (Hu Jun) thinks back to the 1980s and to the night he met young architecture student Lan Yu (Liu Ye), freshly arrived in Beijing from the country and ripe for mentoring and more. The older man warns his toy boy not to get attached. “When two people know each other too well, it’s time to separate,” he says – then signally fails to heed his own advice. He showers Lan Yu with gifts, even buying him a villa, but external events exert unreasonable pressures on them. Handong feels obliged to marry a woman, while Lan Yu joins the protests in Tiananmen Square. The massacre may be reduced here to noises off but its inclusion helps explain,...

Wong Kar-wai isn't a filmmaker particularly known for his sense of humour. His work is many things: romantic, sumptuous, sensual, atmospheric. When he does attempt comedy, it's often tied to one character, an oddball outlier who provides a humorous foil to one of his stony-faced protagonists. The last thing you would expect his name attached to is a wacky parody wuxia movie less in line with King Hu and more on the same page as a Zucker Brothers production, and yet, from the spare change of the enormously expensive and troubled production behind his own “Ashes of Time”, “The Eagle Shooting Heroes” exists.

For those who have watched Wong Kar-wai’s 1994 feature “Chungking Express” his following feature “Fallen Angels” is at times considered something like an addition to the prior story, especially since the director himself has stated he wanted to include it as the third segment in “Chungking Express”. However, Wong Kar-wai decided to go in a different direction, resulting in the decision to make this a stand-alone feature, which, nevertheless, is in many ways, story-wise and aesthetically, connected to “Chungking Express”. In the end, “Fallen Angels” explores some of the same themes as the director’s 1994 feature, for example the image of the city as a maze of obsessions, while also dealing with the darker side of extreme emotions, leading to isolation and rejection, thus adding another layer to his view on the dichotomy of man and metropolis.

Even though severely cut by the censorship boards (and all the original copies being destroyed) “Love Massacre” is still a rather violent film, particularly after a point, but at the same time, quite messy in terms of narrative.
Ivy, a Taiwanese girl studying in California, hangs out most of the time with Louie, an ex-boyfriend and Joy, a girl who exhibits continuous suicidal tendencies, despite the efforts of both the aforementioned. Joy seems to have a thing for Louie, but he has a thing for Ivy, a concept that has made the former girl despising the latter, despite her good will to help her. The “saviors”, after another suicide attempt, decide to call her brother from Hong, Chiu Ching in order to help with her. However, Chiu Ching gets involved romantically with Ivy, antagonizing Louie, complicating things even more, while soon, Ivy finally succeeds in her efforts to kill herself.

Since premiering at last year’s Taiwan Golden Horse Film Festival, the “Chinese Oscars”, Norris Wong‘s debut dramedy “My Prince Edward” (2019) will reach North american theatres through Cheng Cheng Films starting September 4th. The film will also arrive at VOD and DVD on December 15th.
Distributor Cheng Cheng Films states: “Before “My Prince Edward,” Norris Wong had won wide admiration for her writing in some of most groundbreaking Cantonese TV series recent years. Challenging macroscale gender and social economic pressures her worldwide peers face with this directorial debut, she poured real individual experience into a microscale story set in her neighborhood in her home city. Her humane and multidimensional filmmaking soothes the disorientation and anger we consume from sensational headlines on related issues. Controversial , low-budget dystopian Ten Years took the top honors at the Hong Kong Film Awards on Sunday.
A local box office hit made up of five vignettes set in 2025, where locals are persecuted for speaking Cantonese not Mandarin.
Amidst increasing fears of mainland pressure and interference in Hong Kong and some cinemas refusing to screen the film, its success was a surprise even to the producers themselves.
Andrew Choi, one of the producers for the film, said “The meaning of this prize is that it shows Hong Kong still has hope. It reminds us that we could have courage to be creative. I would like to thank everyone who has watched it.”
According to the Guardian, this film with a budget of Hk$500,000 ($64,000) has earned Hk$6m, but its run stopped despite still playing to packed theatres.

The Academy has announced the new class of invited members for 2014 and, as is typical, many of which are among last year's nominees, which includes Barkhad Abdi, Michael Fassbender, Sally Hawkins, Mads Mikkelsen, Lupita Nyong'o and June Squibb in the Actors branch not to mention curious additions such as Josh Hutcherson, Rob Riggle and Jason Statham, but, okay. The Directors branch adds Jay and Mark Duplass along with Jean-Marc Vallee, Denis Villeneuve and Thomas Vinterberg. I didn't do an immediate tally of male to female additions or other demographics, but at first glance it seems to be a wide spread batch of new additions on all fronts. The Academy is also clearly attempting to aggressively bump up the demographics as this is the second year in a row where they have added a large number of new members, well over the average of 133 new members from 2004 to 2012. Michael Fassbender and Lupita Nyong’o of 12 Years a Slave were two of the 271 artists and industry leaders invited to become members of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, which determines nominations and winners at the annual Oscars. The entire list of Academy membership—which numbers about 6,000—isn’t public information so the annual invitation list is often the best indication of the artists involved in the prestigious awards process. It’s worth noting that invitations need to be accepted in order for artists to become members; some artists, like two-time Best Actor winner Sean Penn, have declined membership over the years.

Pop quiz: What do Chris Rock, Claire Denis, Eddie Vedder and Josh Hutcherson all have in common? Answer: They could all be Oscar voters very soon. The annual Academy of Motion Pictures Arts & Sciences invitation list always makes for interesting reading, shedding light on just how large and far-reaching the group's membership is -- or could be, depending on who accepts their invitations. This year, 271 individuals have been asked to join AMPAS, meaning every one of them could contribute to next year's Academy Awards balloting -- and it's as diverse a list as they've ever assembled. Think the Academy consists entirely of fusty retired white dudes? Not if recent Best Original Song nominee Pharrell Williams takes them up on their offer. Think it's all just a Hollywood insiders' game? Not if French arthouse titans Chantal Akerman and Olivier Assayas join the party. It's a list that subverts expectation at every turn.

Themes of love, loss and the despotic force of time permeate Wong Kar-wai’s films and whole landscapes of emotion are suggested without words. This anomalous approach to storytelling works against the grain of Hong Kong cinema as well as Western narrative convention, and is perhaps best exemplified in his 2000 masterpiece, In the Mood for Love: an enigmatic melodrama where falling in love is anything but a panacea.
Set in 60s Hong Kong, the story chronicles the tentative relationship between a married man and a married woman (played by Tony Leung and Maggie Cheung), both of whom discover, after moving into neighbouring flats, that their respective spouses are having an affair. Drawn by their mutual cuckolded status, Su Li-zhen and Chow Mo-Wan soon fall for each other but, stifled by propriety and moral restraint, never act on their impulses. Gravity may be set in space, but it achieved a landslide at the 86th Academy Awards, taking seven Oscars, while 12 Years a Slave went home with three.

The morning after the Oscars is always a strange feeling. We've been covering this process in earnest for months, and now it's over. And for the first time ever, I'm pleased to say that I scored a perfect 10 in predicting the winners in the crafts categories! (I went 21/24 overall, missing Best Live Action Short, Best Animated Short and…Best Picture.) To be fair, however, I'm hardly the only person to have gone 10/10 in this respect. In that sense, we had a night without surprises, which is not to say we didn't have stories. The big story in the crafts categories is, of course, "Gravity's" dominance, as it won six of the 10 below-the-line fields, with the obvious (and highly deserved) win in Best Visual Effects being a foreshadowing of things to come in Best Sound Mixing, Best Sound Editing, Best Cinematography, Best Film Editing and Best Original Score. Visual effects supervisor Tim Webber,...

The 86th annual Academy Awards were really fun to watch. Ellen Degeneres did a fantastic job hosting, and I enjoyed the show she put on. It was also insanely predictable, at least, for me it was. Overall, I'm happy with all of the films that won. My favorite win of the the night was Spike Jonze taking home the Oscar for Best Original screenplay for Her. That was such an amazing movie, and I really wanted it to win that award, but I wasn't sure it would happen. My favorite speech of the night came from Best Actor winner Matthew McConaughey. I was never really a big fan of his, but over the last couple of years he has sure blown up into an amazing actor who has starred in some really incredible films. Then that speech he gave last night won me over, and now I'm on team McConaughey.

12 Years a Slave has won the best picture Oscar at the 86th Academy Awards, defeating a nine-strong field that included Gravity, The Wolf of Wall Street and American Hustle for the headline prize at this year's ceremony. 12 Years a Slave becomes the first film from a black director to take the best picture Oscar.
Directed by Steve McQueen, the landmark slavery drama stars Chiwetel Ejiofor as a free man kidnapped and sold to slaveowners in 19th-century Louisiana. It was based on the bestselling memoir by Solomon Northup, first published in 1853. 12 Years a Slave follows McQueen's award-winning dramas Hunger and Shame, and was produced by among others Brad Pitt's Plan B outfit. Pitt also takes a small but pivotal role as abolitionist carpenter Samuel Bass.

After a lengthy awards season that lasted three long months, the race for the Oscars came to a conclusion tonight at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood.
This year’s 86th Academy Awards saw a split between Best Picture and Director. 12 Years A Slave won three, including Best Picture, Best Adapted Screenplay and Best Supporting Actress for Lupita Nyong’o.

Los Angeles, March 3: Catherine Martin won her first Academy Award for costume design for her work in "The Great Gatsby", while Adruitha Lee and Robin Mathews clinched the trophy of best hair and make-up for "Dallas Buyers Club" at the Oscars ceremony here Sunday.
Martin, who has been nominated for an Oscar for a total of six times, was overwhelmed on receiving the award, for which she competed against Michael Wilkinson ("American Hustle"), William Chang Suk Ping ("The Grandmaster"), Michael O'Connor ("The Invisible Woman") and Patricia Norros ("12 Years a Slave").
For Baz Luhrmann's "The Great Gatsby", she helped.
