Elvis Presley‘s “Do the Clam” is one of the most infamous songs in the King of Rock ‘n’ Roll‘s discography. Its reputation is understandable, but it might be unwarranted. While “Do the Clam” is incredibly easy to mock, it has some redeeming qualities that go unnoticed. Here’s a very modest defense of one of the biggest punchlines in the 1960s rock canon.
Elvis Presley’s ‘Do the Clam’ is great because it’s bad
“Do the Clam” is a rock song were Elvis implores his audience to do a novelty dance called The Clam that never caught on. It has a fun beat, and Elvis’ vocals are as good as ever. However, the lyrics of the song are so ridiculous that many listeners can’t enjoy it.
Here’s the paradox: “Do the Clam” is good because it’s so oddball and undignified. It’s the pinnacle of so-bad-it’s good music.

Update: In addition to being available on Hulu, the classic Bruce WIllis/ Cybill Shepherd series, Moonlighting, is now coming to digital retailers like iTunes and more. So if you want to own a digital copy of the show, now’s your chance. One caveat: no news on whether the show will be available in Canada, with it still absent from Disney Star here north of the border, making it seem like the music rights are keeping the show from being more widely available.
Original Post: Do bears bear? Do bees be? Does a Hulu subscription sound enticing now that Moonlighting is finally coming to the streaming platform? That’s right, you detectives of romance! All 67 episodes of the classic comedy series starring Bruce Willis and Cybill Shepherd will be available to stream on the service beginning on October 10, 2023.

Thom Bell, who helped to create the soul songs style that became known in the 1960s and 1970s as “The Sound of Philadelphia,” died Thursday in Bellingham, Washington. He was 79 and no cause of death was given.
His lawyer, Michael Silver, confirmed the death.
Bell, along with fellow producers and songwriters Kenny Gamble and Leon Huff, were the forces behind the lush orchestrations that characterized The Sound of Philadelphia. Bell, Gamble, and Huff were known as “The Mighty Three,” working out of a Broad Street building and creating a song factory that dominated the era’s charts and Top 40.
Dyanna Williams, a music journalist and broadcast personality, announced Bell’s death on her social media accounts Thursday afternoon.

Twist off, Chubby Checker: Your double run just got lapped.
The yuletide is high for Mariah Carey’s 1994 holiday staple “All I Want for Christmas,” which moves into the top spot on the Billboard Hot 100 today — becoming the first song to top that tally in three separate chart runs.
The hitmaking singer’s track breaks its tie with Checker’s smash “The Twist,” which hit No. 1 in 1960 and returned to the summit two years later. “All I Want for Christmas” first climbed to No. 1 in 2019, made it back there last year and moves up from No. 2 this week to complete the feat. All told, it has amassed six weeks at No. 1.
The track also nudged Checker from another Hot 100 record as it now boasts the longest spans between chart-topping runs. “The Twist” did it in one year and three months-plus.
Carey also extends her personal chart record of most total weeks at No.

After Chubby Checker’s 1960 hit “The Twist” was named Billboard’s All-Time Number One Song, his website was updated with the accolade: “Billboard’s First #1 Song of All Time until 2065.” Unfortunately for him, he’s been dethroned sooner than expected as the honor has been transferred to the Weeknd for “Blinding Lights.”
The After Hours single was named the new Number One song on Billboard’s Greatest Songs of All Time Hot 100 Chart after spending 90 weeks on the Hot 100 chart. It spent four weeks at Number One, 43 weeks in the top five,...

The titular character in “Billy,” the new track from budding Chicago indie rock trio Horsegirl, cuts a familiar figure. He wanders and ponders through life, an existence that bassist-vocalist Nora Cheng renders in shades of mundane saturated with just the right amount of strange.
“Billy says he’s got a stiff rate in the nick of time,” Cheng sings over an instrumental churn that’s both beatific and bombed out (indie rock vet John Agnello produced the track). “He washes off his robes in preparation to be crucified/Billy recounts...

Crime Story is a film that tries to sell an improbable story. Though there are some good performances here, enjoyment of the film hinges on the viewer's ability to suspend disbelief.
We first meet our anti-hero, Ben Myers, via voiceover. Richard Dreyfuss's voice is easily recognizable,as is the scene. He's been shot and wounded and is being questioned by paramedics on the ride to the hospital. Briefly, we're treated to what must be his life, and mistakes, passing before his eyes. Claiming to be "based on actual events," we are now informed that we are going to a point in time "12 hours earlier."
Ben Myers is a 71 year-old man. We get this information from the paramedics in the first scene. When we first see Ben, we also see that he is obese. He and his second wife, Nan,...

Wong Kar-Wai’s upcoming TV series “Blossoms” has released its first trailer, giving viewers a peek at the first new work from the auteur in nearly a decade.
Though Wong is most often thought of as a Hong Kong director, he was born in Shanghai. The “Blossoms” series is his first of two long-anticipated adaptations of a celebrated eponymous novel by Jin Yucheng, and appears to be a stylish love letter to his hometown. A film version of “Blossoms” is also in the works.
The series will consist of 24 hour-long episodes, his production firm Jet Tone Productions confirmed to Variety. Though Wong has produced and directed the pilot, he will only produce and helm some of the future episodes. It remains unclear how many others are already completed or in the works, and the series does not yet have a release date.

A first trailer for Wong Kar-Wai’s upcoming dramatic series “Blossoms Shanghai” emerged on the internet this weekend. While it lacks English subtitles, the first footage from this sweeping ode to Shanghai has plenty of the Hong Kong director’s visual panache. Watch below.
Written by award-winning Shanghainese screenwriter Qin Wen, with visuals from Academy Award-winning “Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon” cinematographer Peter Pau, the series, according to the official synopsis, “tells the story of an enigmatic, self-made millionaire, Mr. Bao (Hu Ge), and his journey of reinvention from a young opportunist with a troubled past to the heights of the gilded city of Shanghai. Set against the backdrop of massive economic growth in 1990s Shanghai, the series unveils the glamour that follows his dazzling wealth and his entanglement with four fabulous women that represent the pursuits of his life: adventure, honor, love and innocence.”

I come from a place called Dunoon, a small seaside town on the Firth of Clyde, just inside the Highlands. It’s like that town Dylan Thomas made up in Under Milk Wood – Llareggub – “bugger all” backwards. In 1960, I had just turned 17 and I went to London to visit my father’s family. The Evening Standard published a centrefold with diagrams on how to do the twist because Chubby Checker was coming to town. So I bought the LP – Twist With Chubby Checker – and took it back home by steam train and steamboat and introduced the twist to Dunoon, long before it got to Glasgow or Edinburgh.

Rob Thomas is well aware of the journey that “Smooth,” his 1999 collaboration with Carlos Santana, has taken during the past two decades. “It went through the, ‘Hey, this is a good, cool summer jam,’ and then the, ‘Hey, we’re all sick of this song and never want to hear it again,’” he says. “And then it went through the, ‘Hey, let’s listen to that song again. After endearing himself to the judges last season, a fan-favorite contestant is heading back to Hollywood for another shot at stardom — and that was just one of several surprises from Sunday’s American Idol.
The third night of auditions this season also included what Lionel Richie called “the attack of the 15- and 16-year-olds,” an onslaught of insanely talented teens: There was Austin Michael Robinson, 15, dubbed the “country Justin Bieber” by Katy Perry; Riley Thompson, 16, dubbed the “country Lana Del Ray” by that same judge; Mica Giaconi, 16, who did Bob Marley proud with a cool cover of “Is This Love”; and Darian Baena,...

After the power, presence and flash of Prince, Beyonce, Bruce Springsteen, U2 and Lady Gaga’s Super Bowl halftime performances — not to mention the controversy of this weekend’s Maroon 5-Travis Scott spot — it’s hard to believe that the big game’s intermission show used to consist of college marching bands along with performers like the lily-white singing/dancing troupe Up with People and the late, great Carol Channing.

“Yet if you should forget me for a whileAnd afterwards remember, do not grieveFor if the darkness and corruption leaveA vestige of the thoughts that once we hadBetter by far you should forget and smileThan that you should remember and be sad.”—Christina Rossetti, Remember (1862)An opening title card from director Thom Andesen’s new feature film, The Thoughts That Once We Had, directly identifies the cinematic writings of philosopher Gilles Deleuze as the project's primary subject and inspiration. Deleuze’s two volumes on film, Cinema 1: The Movement-Image (1983) and Cinema 2: The Time-Image (1985), are today synonymous with a certain modernist school of thought that, while integrated in academia to such a degree as to be all but understood, remains quite radical. Unquestionably dense and provocatively pedantic, the French empiricist’s filmic texts integrate an array of theories and conceptualizations into a fairly delineated taxonomy, and are therefore fairly conducive...

Legendary Kiss Spaceman Ace Frehley lands in Dallas, TX on December 1st. The Rock ‘n Roll Hall of Fame Inductee will be taking the stage at Trees for what will surely be an electrifying experience. His performance includes Kiss classics, solo material from a four decades long career, and songs from his latest album Space Invader.
Anyone who’s heard Space Invader knows Ace still has what it takes to rock an arena. The critically-acclaimed album has been praised for its pure unadulterated rock power and reflection of the guitarist’s former years with Kiss. It shows Frehley continuing to grow in his craft and truly is an extension of his years with the glam rock kings.
Although Ace is definitely the center of attention, his touring band is nothing to balk at either. Guitarist Richie Scarlet is well-known for sharing the stage with Skid Row’s Sebastian Bach, Alice Cooper,...

Dave Appell, the Philadelphia songwriter-producer behind such 1960s rock ’n’ roll hits as “Let’s Twist Again” and “Limbo Rock” from Chubby Checker and Dee Dee Sharp’s “Mashed Potato Time,” has died. He was 92. Appell, who later produced the Tony Orlando and Dawn hits “Knock Three Times” and “Tie a Yellow Ribbon Round the Ole Oak Tree,” died Tuesday, his family announced. He lived and had a studio — where he was still working into his 90s — in Cherry Hill, N.J. Starting in the late 1950s, Appell was a mainstay for a decade at the

While ‘The Shocking Twist’ sounds like an Edm remix of a Chubby Checker song, its actual purpose is to deliver something unexpected to film-goers or book readers or game players. When done right, these moments are iconic – be it the end of The Sixth Sense, Reservoir Dogs or the death of Aerith in Final Fantasy VII. They can also be really dumb, and pose countless questions about the plot points that came before – like in The Dark Knight Rises, or in many of the games on this very list you’re about to read about and hopefully enjoy.
A plot twist, like what your Facebook feed says about handguns, is a tool. In the right hands, it can make a great game legendary, in the wrong hands, it’ll massacre any and all positive feelings you have toward a title. Twists must be used responsibility and with much care,...

The one-of-a-kind New Wave singer Klaus Nomi was born Klaus Sperber in Bavaria on January 24, 1944. Though his career effectively lasted just five years and he had no hits, he became a beloved cult artist and introduced people outside the realm of classical music to the glories of opera through stunning, highly stylized performances that crushed genre boundaries in a way that the many more calculated "classical crossover" acts since have been unable to achieve, no matter how many more records they may have sold.
Some sources say Nomi (adopted as a stage name as an anagram of "omni") was "classically trained" (though that could just mean piano lessons); Kurt Loder, writing for MTV, calls him "a true, if untrained, countertenor." (A countertenor is basically a male alto.) He did, in his youth, work as an usher at the German Opera in West Berlin, and informally sang there for an audience of his fellow workers.

With next gen gaming soon to be hitting us flush in the face brinkmanship between Microsoft and Sony is coming to the fore. There have been more twists than a Chubby Checker playlist so far in the preliminary scuffle for market share. It looked as though Microsoft had got it all wrong and would pay dearly but for their impromptu reversal over numerous contentious policies. Sony looked to be coasting along on a wave of gamer adulation only to have themselves reeled back in with Microsoft’s suprise offer of a free digital copy of FIFA 14 with ‘all’ pre-orders for Xbox One in Europe.
News broke last week though that Microsoft were changing this very much in demand deal. Microsoft’s social marketing manager Graeme Boyd took to Twitter to clarify the situation. He stated:

New York — Misty-eyed music promoter Sid Bernstein, who booked such top acts as Jimi Hendrix, Judy Garland and the Rolling Stones and hit the highest heights when he masterminded the Beatles' historic concerts at Shea Stadium and Carnegie Hall, died Wednesday at age 95.
Bernstein's daughter, Casey Deutsch, said he died in his sleep at a hospital. She cited no illness and said he died of natural causes.
For decades, the squat, floppy-haired Bernstein excelled like few others at being everywhere and knowing everybody. He worked with Garland, Duke Ellington and Ray Charles, promoted Dion, Bobby Darin and Chubby Checker and managed Esy Morales, the Rascals and Ornette Coleman. He was an early backer of Abba, setting up the Swedish group's first American appearances. He was behind one of the first rock benefit shows, the 1970 "Winter Festival for Peace" at Madison Square Garden, which featured Hendrix and Peter, Paul and Mary.

Hewlett-Packard says that a lawsuit over a mobile phone app allowing men to measure the size of their penis doesn't add up. At issue is the "Chubby Checker," the punning app which in February provoked action in California federal court by Ernest Evans, the singer-songwriter famously known as Chubby Checker. Evans says that Hp has tarnished his name, violated his trademarks and knowingly invaded upon his publicity rights. In a statement to the court, Hp says that it can't be held legally responsible for third parties that would make available such an item in its app store.

Washington — A popular tune by Simon and Garfunkel written after John F. Kennedy's assassination and Chubby Checker's 1960s dance hit "The Twist" will be among 25 recordings selected for preservation at the Library of Congress.
These are just a few sounds of the 20th century being added to the National Recording Registry on Thursday for long-term preservation due to their cultural, artistic and historic importance. The library said Checker's rendition of "The Twist" became a symbol for the energy and excitement of the early 60s after "American Bandstand" host Dick Clark chose Checker to record a new version of the song.
Later, the 1966 album "Sounds of Silence" by Paul Simon and Art Garfunkel was a hit in its day but not before the duo struggled and split early on. Their song "The Sound of Silence" from the aftermath of President Kennedy's assassination 50 years ago this year had initially flopped...

Why did the show’s writers honor King? Simple: They’ve been waiting decades for an opportunity to just name a category “It.”

Without Tony Sheridan, it's possible the world would never have been introduced to The Beatles. The band played backup for him in their infancy, beginning in 1960. Sadly, Sheridan passed away Saturday, at 72, the New York Times reports.
The makeup of the band was different in the beginning. John Lennon, Paul McCartney, and George Harrison were all on guitar, with Stu Sutcliffe on bass, and Pete Best on drums. Sheridan claimed that, when Best left the band in 1962, he introduced them to Ringo Starr, who became the permanent replacement.
Sheridan's records were also the first commercial recordings to feature the Beatles. Of the nine songs they recorded together, only one features vocals that weren't Sheridan's. Lennon sang on "Ain't She Sweet."
Once the first single, "My Bonnie," was released, The Beatles became a success, with fans flocking to stores to buy the record. They went on to record their own albums,...

Chubby Checker's lawsuit over a smartphone app that claims to measures penis size is the latest in a checkered record at attempting to maintain relevancy through the twists and turns of pop culture.
The app is is called the "Chubby Checker" referring to a slang term for an erection.

The lawsuit comes as Checker tries to reinvigorate his career by promoting "Changes," a new single.

In the late 1950s, a young singer called Ernest Evans began going by the name of Chubby Checker, a handle bestowed in part by Dick Clark’s wife (seriously!). Because it was a less vulgar time, nobody thought to warn young Chubby that his new moniker was just begging to be used as a lame double entendre (example: “Chubby Checker? I barely know ‘er!”).
But 60-odd years later, times have most definitely changed. Celebrities show off their female breast nipples all willy-nilly, despite strict orders from the suits at CBS. Nobody really gives a f— when somebody drops an f-bomb...

Chubby Checker (real name Ernest Evans) has filed suit in Saint Lucie County (Fla.) Federal Court this week, alleging that Hewlett Packard and its subsidiary Palm, Inc. didn't have permission to maintain the app called "The Chubby Checker."
According to a press release on MarketWatch, the 71-year-old's lawyer Willie Gary claims Hewlett Packard and Palm did not act quickly enough to take down the penis-measuring app, and that by doing so, damaged Checker's reputation:
"The "app" adversely affects Chubby Checker's brand and value and if allowed to continue, will cause serious damage to the Plaintiff's goodwill and will tarnish his image that he has worked to maintain over the last 50 years," the release states.
