Eddie Van Halen was in the process of reuniting Van Halen’s classic lineup for a farewell tour before his health took a turn for the worse and he eventually passed away in October 2020. The revelation comes from Extreme guitarist Nuno Bettencourt, who met with the rock legend in 2019.
While speaking with Sirius Xm (as transcribed by Brave Words) about Extreme’s recent comeback single “Rise” and the band’s forthcoming album, Six, Bettencourt recalled a surprise visit from Eddie during the recording of the LP. Bettencourt was in a studio laying down the solo to “Rise” when he got a call from Extreme singer and onetime Van Halen vocalist Gary Cherone, who told him to get back to his home as soon as he can.

Rock’n’roll musicians have a habit of thinking of themselves like secular gods, but the truth is they’re not infallible. No matter how successful a band may or may not have been in the past, there’s never any guarantee their next record will live up to the heights they’ve previously scaled. Sometimes, everything that once went right just all goes wrong.
There are often extenuating circumstances, of course. Band members may leave due to death, drugs or just good old-fashioned “musical differences”, or an ambitious new direction may turn out to be more like a swerve into oncoming traffic.
Whatever the cause, the fact remains that just because an album has the name of a classic band slapped across the cover, it doesn’t necessarily follow that the album itself will be a classic.

Guitarist Joe Perry has revealed that singer Steven Tyler is doing “100 percent better” after recent health issues, and that Aerosmith are planning to launch a tour in September.
Four months ago, Aerosmith dropped the final two dates of their “Deuces Are Wild” Las Vegas residency due to Tyler’s health. When asked about the singer’s condition in a new interview with Detroit’s Wrif, Perry said his longtime bandmate is on the mend.
“Steven’s doing great,” Perry said. “He’s doing a 100 percent better. He had a lot of physical stuff going on that — finally — he really needed to take some more time off, unfortunately.”
Tyler, who recently denied allegations that he sexually abused a minor in the 1970s, is apparently doing well enough to tour. Perry revealed the band’s fall plans in a separate interview with New York’s 102.3 Wbab when asked if Aerosmith were commemorating...

Aerosmith guitarist Joe Perry has announced a new solo album, Sweetzerland Manifesto Mkii, the follow-up to the first Sweetzerland Manifesto released back in 2018.
Ahead of the new album’s May 26th release date, Perry also shared the lead single “Fortunate One” featuring The Black Crowes’ Chris Robinson. The rollicking blues rocker is tangental to Robinson’s longtime band and solo work, and he sounds right at home over Perry’s licks and solos. Stone Temple Pilots bassist Robert Deleo also plays on “Fortunate One,” continuing the Sweetzerland Manifesto tradition of Perry bringing in guest singers and musicians.
“I’m really excited to get this song out — it hadn’t been written when the first version of Sweetzerland Manifesto was released,” Perry commented via a press release. “My old friend Chris Robinson from the Black Crowes sang on it, he knocked it outta the park! We started it in L.A.

Veteran hard-rock act Extreme have announced their first new studio album in 15 years. The band’s sixth LP overall is appropriately titled Six, and features the just-released raw rocker “Rise” as the first single.
Extreme — featuring Gary Cherone (vocals), Nuno Bettencourt (guitar), Pat Badger (bass), and Kevin Figueiredo (drums) — will release Six on June 9th via earMUSIC.
“Musically, it’s aggressive,” Cherone stated of “Rise.” “Lyrically, it’s a cautionary tale on the rise and fall of fame. You get seduced into it. Once you’re on top, they’ll rip you apart and tear you down. That’s the nature of the beast.”
“When Eddie Van Halen passed, it really hit me,” Bettencourt added. “I’m not going to be the one who will take the throne, but I felt some responsibility to keep guitar playing alive. So, you hear a lot of fire on the record.”

A big moment in Van Halen history took place Saturday night when Sammy Hagar added “Running With the Devil” and “Ain’t Talkin’ ‘Bout Love” into the set during his Sammy Hagar and Friends residency at the Strat Theater in Las Vegas. He sang both those songs quite a few times during his tenure in Van Halen, but this was the first time he featured any David Lee Roth-era tunes at his solo gigs.

When Eddie Van Halen, Michael Anthony, and Alex Van Halen stepped onstage with their estranged singer David Lee Roth for the first time in 12 years at the 1996 MTV Video Music Awards, no one was more shocked than Mitch Malloy. Malloy, a North Dakota native with central-casting Nordic-rock-god looks and a big, radio-ready voice, says he was under every impression that Van Halen had chosen him as their new singer in the wake of Sammy Hagar’s departure from the band. Instead, within a few weeks, Extreme frontman Gary Cherone was...

Wolfgang, who plays all instruments and sings all the vocals on the song, with a full album due next year, called Rolling Stone to talk about Mammoth Wvh, his time as Van Halen’s bassist,...

They even talked about bringing back Gary Cherone, who sang with the band on one album, Wolfgang told Howard Stern Monday.

When Gary Cherone heard the news yesterday that his onetime bandmate, Eddie Van Halen, had died of cancer, he was reeling. “My phone was off the hook and I couldn’t talk,” he says. “I was texting people just hearts. Rock legend Eddie Van Halen, lead guitarist of the group Van Halen, died of cancer at the age of 65, according to Variety.
“I can’t believe I’m having to write this, but my father, Edward Lodewijk Van Halen, has lost his long and arduous battle with cancer this morning” his son, Wolf Van Halen, announced on Twitter. “He was the best father I could ever ask for. Every moment I’ve shared with him on and off stage was a gift.”
The band Van Halen often appeared to be an unstable unit. Original lead vocalist David Lee Roth gave way to Sammy Hagar before reuniting with the band. But Eddie Van Halen and his drummer brother, Alex, were always there, from the beginning and through their 12 studio albums. They formed the band in 1972, and by 1974, its classic lineup, Lee Roth and bassist Michael Anthony was in place. They were...

Jimmy Fallon is well-known for his singing (or lip-syncing) on The Tonight Show, and he is also well-known for making viral videos with celebrities, whether it’s them playing a game or spoofing some type of show or movie they were a part of. Last night, Fallon did a little bit of both, as he and Jack Black worked together to do a a shot-for-shot recreation of Extreme’s black-and-white music video for their classic ’90s song “More Than Words.” In the video (which you can watch for yourself below), Black and Fallon do their best to impersonate Extreme’s Gary Cherone and Nuno Bettencourt. And you know what? They actually don’t do too bad of a job, particularly Black, who actually hits some pretty darn high notes throughout the song. Still, though, even if neither of them had any talent whatsoever at singing, this video would just be worth it for the wigs,...

Jack Black and Jimmy Fallon took a hilarious trip back in time when they re-created the music video for Extreme's 1990 hit "More Than Words" on Monday's episode of The Tonight Show. The pair donned wigs and earrings in the black-and-white video, which was almost a shot-for-shot remake of the original. Jack and Jimmy gave emotional stares into the camera while background actors, who were also donning long-haired wigs, put lighters in the air. Jack channeled Gary Cherone's style, while Jimmy nailed his impression of guitarist Nuno Bettencourt. On this week’s Hump Day with Adam Lambert, Adam’s former record label makes a controversial decision.
The big Adam news this week is the announcement that Adam’s former label will release The Very Best Of Adam Lambert on May 27th. It will include the American Idol performances “Mad World,” “One,” and “Tracks My Tears,” the Glee contribution “Marry The Night,” his soundtrack offering “Time For Miracles,” and a collection of songs from his studio albums.
“If some of these tracks feel like musical mission statements, it’s in their skillful fusion of mainstream pop and rock with left-of-center, if not underground, musician and pop-cultural markers, and their clear conviction towards that mission,” reads the album’s liner notes. “And if that’s not the hallmark of an artist who’s unfailingly true to himself… well, you are invited to listen to some more until you get it.

The night before I interviewed Chris O'Dowd, I observed him dancing -- surrounded by a group of onlookers, of course -- to the A-ha earworm "Take on Me." This isn't a particularly embarrassing or scandalous observation (look, who hasn't danced to "Take on Me"?), but what was noticeable was just how much fun O'Dowd was having.
Premiere parties aren't always what a normal human being would call a good time. They're often overcrowded, with the talent from the film safely secured in some sort of fortified backroom to protect them from the hoards of attendees who were not in the movie. By contrast, at the New York premiere party for "The Sapphires," O'Dowd looked like a guy who wanted to make sure everyone was having fun. He even yelled at Harvey Weinstein in an effort to get Weinstein to sing. (Weinstein did not sing.)

The ‘will they, won’t they’ saga revolving around their reunion and who would be in it could fill entire novels. After 1999’s poorly received Van Halen III, their only album with Gary Cherone on vocals, the band went on hiatus. Four years later, the band reunited with Sammy Hagar for the first time since 1996, after he left due to the band secretly recording with David Lee Roth. After a two year reunion tour, Eddie decided he didn’t want to continue with Hagar, and instead contacted Roth for a second reunion. Hagar said at the time that he was done with the band, but then changed his mind and has since expressed interest in returning. The David Lee Roth/Van Halen reunion is officially on, with a new single off their upcoming album A Different Kind Of Truth, complete with a black and white music video of the band performing it at the Roxy in L.A. last week. The contested metal band (hair, or not hair, that is the question) hasn't put out an album with original frontman Roth since 1984, when their album 1984 marked their bitter parting-of-ways.
After watching the video for "Tattoo" (below) it must be said, Dlr is no Sammy Hagar or Gary Cherone. He's better. Way better, obviously. Like some beautiful lovechild of Sting's and Mick Jagger's, who everyone in the land welcomed by knocking their knees together and spinning. That's a lot of what Dlr does in the video, plus vocals, with Alex and Eddie Van Halen back on drum and guitar respectively, and Eddie's son Wolfgang taking Michael Anthony's place on bass.

We recently reported that 80's super band Van Halen is going back on tour with singer David Lee Roth. All of a sudden, the old rivalry between fans of Roth as the lead singer and later front man Sammy Hagar has heated up. It continues to be a discussion at many of the Zap2it holiday dinners, and we imagine, a bunch of yours.
If you recall, David Lee Roth was the lead singer of Van Halen from 1972 through 1985. After a spat, he left and was replaced by Sammy Hagar, who fronted the band from 1985-1996. (Yes, that guy who claimed he was abducted by aliens.) There have been numerous reunions and a stint with Extreme's Gary Cherone, but those early years split fans into those who love classic Van Halen and those who prefer "Van Hagar."

Years after first breaking up following an album called "1984," the almost-original lineup of Van Halen is going on the road again in 2012. With Eddie Van Halen's son, Wolfgang Van Halen, replacing bassist Michael Anthony, a David Lee Roth-fronted Van Halen will tour in 2012, with tickets going on sale Jan. 10. The group announced the news on its website. Roth will be the lone non-Van Halen: The group's drummer remains Eddie's brother, Alex. Roth left the group after "1984," with Sammy Hagar taking over. Everything old is new again, as former Van Halen leadman David Lee Roth has made up with guitarist Eddie Van Halen, and together have announced the news on Van-Halen.com through a series of video clips. Specific tour dates will be unveiled soon, with tickets going on sale Jan. 10. The 2012 tour promises Roth, a leadman from 1972 to 1985, rejoined with guitarist Eddie Van Halen, bassist Wolfgang Van Halen and drummer Alex Van Halen. Roth was famously replaced with Sammy Hagar in a contentious break, only to have bad blood lead to the Hagar Van Halen split in 1996. Gary Cherone replaced Hagar as frontman up until 1999. The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame has announced its 2012 inductees, a list that includes the usual spate of Hof-y names (the Small Faces, ‘60s singer Donovan, blues guitarist Freddie King, etc) plus a handful of artists that made their mark in the MTV era: the Beastie Boys, the Red Hot Chili Peppers and Guns N’ Roses.
And while none of those latter three are exactly surprising (though, we gotta admit, the Cure, who were also in the running this year but didn’t make the cut, were robbed), what may transpire when they’re enshrined at the Hall’s annual induction ceremony — set for April 14 in beautiful Cleveland — could shock the rock world to its very core. Because, as is tradition, the honored acts will take the stage to perform a medley of their biggest hits, and while we’re reasonably sure what will happen when the Beasties and the Peppers do their thing,...

First off, I have to tell you that this page may load slow. We're making an awful lot of calls to the Amazon Api here, and that's bound to monkey with things. If you have no idea what that means... it's shiny. Please note also that, for the same reason, you may find, depending on traffic, that not all of the Amazon details will load properly. I apologize for that, it's just the nature of the beast, and the fact that the Api wasn't really meant for such things. If you refresh, it will probably fix.
You may have heard me mention this giveaway quite a while ago, and it's taken me a long time to figure out what sort of format to put things in, and I kept added things. Eventually it became too much to really give any kind of run down on the items, so I decided...

One of the coolest guys ever to pick up a guitar and crank up an amplifier celebrates his birthday today, as Eddie Van Halen — the six-string Samurai who has been the driving force behind Van Halen for three decades — is now 56 years old. Eddie has had an incredible roller coaster ride over the past few years, but at the moment, he seems to be back in the driver's seat.
When Van Halen first landed on rock radio in the 1970s, there really hadn't been anything like it. Between the thudding rhythms of Alex Van Halen, the dreamy backing vocals and fierce low end of Michael Anthony and the dynamic personality that was frontman David Lee Roth, Van Halen were primed to become the biggest rock band in the world (and that's exactly what happened, really). But it was Eddie's amazing fret work that really made heads spin and jaws drop.

Rockers Van Halen are back in the studio with original frontman David Lee Roth and will release their first studio album in more than two decades in 2011. The group completed its reunion tour with Roth in 2008 and many fans expected them to follow up the road success with a new record, but there was no word on any upcoming projects.
However, the band recently renewed its deal with publishers Warner/Chappell and guitarist Eddie Van Halen and his drummer brother Alex have revealed they are working on new material. They stated, "(Van Halen) is currently in the studio recording an album with Roth that is due for release in 2011."
And the band will promote the forthcoming disc by hitting the road once again, reports Billboard. The site claims the rockers' manager and Live Nation promotions executive Irving Azoff mentioned a Van Halen 2011 tour during a discussion about concert earnings on Thursday,...
