Not to be confused with other similarly titled products, this latest incarnation of Mysterious Island comes from China and involves the paranormal. Game contestants, as reported by the fictional TV show "Search Planet," are taken to a remote piece of rock on the Binlusai Island chain for a final round of "Survivor." But no one in the group knows about the land’s dark past; it was once the home to a leper colony.
But after the transport gets damaged as they approach land, everyone, including the show hostess Stanley (Jessica Xu) and cameraman Ken (Shaun Tam), have to do more than to fend for themselves.
Greed overcomes the eight people, show creators excluded, who think nothing of their plight.

Curiosity has certainly gotten the better of me on this one, folks. Director Kai Cheung Chung’s upcoming Chinese genre outing “Mysterious Island” has enough inherent cinematic weirdness surrounding it that it’s practically guaranteed a viewing in my household. Does it matter that I really have no clue as to what, precisely, is going on in this film? Of course not. If anything, that has only helped push the movie towards the top of my must-see list for this year. Below you can find the latest promotional poster for the flick, which opens in its native land on July 8th, 2011. Did you miss the trailer? Solve that problem by clicking right here. I have no idea what in the hell is going on in this clip, but truth be told, that’s exactly why I want to see Kai Cheung Chung’s “Mysterious Island”. If nothing else, at least the marketing campaign stays true to the picture’s title. I’m sure we’ll see a full trailer before long, as the film, which stars Jordan Chan, Mi Yang, Tien You Tsui, Hayama Go, Janel Tsai, and Anya, opens on July 8th, 2011. You can feast your eyes on the strangeness below. To prevent further confusion, here’s a synopsis: A group of young people from different countries head to a deserted island for a survivor competition. The winner who lives through the hardships will be awarded with a big cash prize. However this journey turns out to be much harder than they could stand. First, their maps are gone. Then the competitors are being murdered,...

Its original February opening date has come and gone, but a release for the “contemporary” Chinese horror Mysterious Island still seems on the cards, with a new poster and (albeit brief) teaser trailer, turning up for the movie. Traditional Chinese supernatural horror themes are out the window with this one - director Kai Cheung Chung has said he’s taken his inspiration for the film from the likes of “Texas Chainsaw Massacre" and “Evil Dead,” so it looks like we can expect less ghosts and a lot more gore on this one. Mysterious Island teaser...

At the same time that the Hong Kong Film Festival is held (currently in full swing), Filmart (21 - 24 April) unveiled several titles that caught our eye and that we look forward to in the near future. Among the noteworthy items promoted at the event, the lineup at Emperor Motion Pictures includes four major films, "The Great Magician", "The Last Supper", "The Viral Factor" and "Diva". "The Great Magician" is now currently in production, starring Tony Leung and directed by Derek Yee, centering on a story of a magician who saves his country with his tricks and illusions. "The Last Supper" will be directed by Lu Chuan, who won the best director award of Asian Film Awards last year. He would pair up heavyweights stars Liu Ye, Chang Chen and Daniel Wu on this new historical drama. "The Viral Factor" will mark another collaboration between director Dante Lam and actor Nicholas Tse,...

It’s not every day you see a poster for a Hong Kong horror movie featuring a graphic parade of severed body parts, but according to Chinese site Sina the reasons simple. Director Kai Cheung Chung has gone “contemporary” on us, taking inspiration for his latest scare flick Mysterious Island from the likes of “Texas Chainsaw Massacre" and “Evil Dead,” rather than the traditional Chinese supernatural themes we’ve all seen many times before. ‘Island’ stars Chinese actor and musician Jordan Chan, who will take the lead in a story of a group stranded on a deserted island, inhabited by an evil demonic presence. Granted that’s (so far) perhaps not sounding the most original of storylines, but with slash ’n’ gore style horror still a rarity in Hong Kong, the prospect of some fresh splatter coming our way from this emerging modern horror wave, means we’ll be keeping...
