Like the rest of the world I was stunned to hear that James Gandolfini died suddenly earlier today of a stroke while vacationing in Italy. He was only 51 and there was every reason to believe that more great work was ahead of him since male character actors of great reknown can work for as long as they'd like really in Hollywood's male-centric world.
My most recent fond memories of the actor were the gentle surprise of his comic timing when we meet him in a frisky scene in In the Loop (2009) in which he flirts with Karen Clark (Mimi Kennedy) by joking about bestiality

Good afternoon and happy March! Where does the time go?
Happy birthday to Ke$ha!
Julianne Moore (The Kids Are All Right) and Alexander Skarsgård (True Blood) star in the modern version of the 1897 book-turned-movie What Maise Knew. The story is about a child “shuffled back and forth between her two divorced parents every six months.” (Ugh, it sounds so depressing.) Moore plays Susanna, an aging rock star, and Skarsgård plays her second husband.
Check out the film’s poster below.
Rumor has it Emma Watson might be starring in Kenneth Branagh’s adaptation of Cinderella. If Watson signs on to be the title character she’ll have to go head to head with her Wicked Stepmother played by Cate Blanchett.
Zoe Saldana wants to play a "sexy something, like a princess from another planet...

On our last post on this, about a month ago, Aretha Franklin said that her long-in-development biopic was back in motion, with an approved story treatment, and an ordered script. She also stated that casting had officially begun, with Dorothy Norwood, Karen Clark and La Shun Pace (all award-winning gospel singers), set to play the Clara Ward singers in the movie (Clara Ward being the queen of gospel music, and among those that would influence Aretha's music and vocal style, as well as a longtime lover of Rev. C. L. Franklin, Aretha's father, with whom the Ward singers toured extensively). Skip ahead to today, in an interview...

Well here we go again folks; everytime this project comes up, I always say, if it ever sees the light of day, I'd be shocked! But ya never know, do ya? And with today's news, it just might be on its way to production... sooner than later. In a press release from Aretha Franklin's rep, her long-in-development biopic is said to be moving forward, with an approved story treatment, and an ordered script. It's also stated that casting has officially begun (no more wish lists, as has been the case until now), with Dorothy Norwood, Karen Clark and La Shun Pace (all award-winning gospel singers), set to play the Clara Ward singers in the movie...

New York — Now that the Queen of Soul has found her king, she's focusing on all the key details of her upcoming nuptials, including the place, the entertainment and, most important, the dress.
"You know I am very hands-on. There is no way in the world anyone else could do my wedding other than myself, along with whomever I select to do various things," she told The Associated Press.
Aretha Franklin announced to the AP in a statement earlier this week that she was engaged to longtime friend Willie Wilkerson. In a phone interview Wednesday night from Atlanta, where her late father, the Rev. C.L. Franklin, was to be honored by the Trumpet Awards for his achievements, a jovial Franklin said Wilkerson's proposal wasn't entirely unexpected.
"We were ... just kind of talking along those lines, and then it got very serious," she said. "I just said, `Is that a proposal?...

Aretha Franklin, Queen of Soul, is on a roll. She’s lost 23 pounds on a new, healthy diet and she looks fantastic.
“I’m working on the next 23,” she declared backstage last night at City Center where the Queen sang her signature hit, “Respect,” for Good Housekeeping magazine’s 125th anniversary show.
Not only was Aretha a vision in a white gown specially designed for her new slimmed down figure, but she had lots of other news. Her new album, the first in seven years, is coming to us in May via WalMart. “A Woman Falling Out of Love” was produced by Franklin with Bebe Winans and Gordon Chambers. Aretha told me she wrote two of the songs–she is always her best composer–and the album features a duet with the amazing Karen Clark, of the Clark Sisters.
Isn’t that enough?

Peter Capaldi and Chris Addison in In the Loop
Photo: IFC Films The villain/hero of In the Loop is not so much a who as it is a what, and even that what can't be clearly defined as director Armando Iannucci and a staff of five talented writers pieced together one of the most smartly written and superbly executed political comedies I have ever seen, if not the absolute pinnacle of the genre. It's not often I watch a movie and feel confident in saying it is "the best" or "one of the best" of anything, but without a doubt In the Loop is one of the best comedies I have ever seen and one that does not get old (I have seen it three times now). However, do not wait to watch it on DVD. It is meant to be seen with a large audience, all of you...

Anyone trying to sell a movie will tell you that they will do anything to get people in the theater. I was first intrigued by this film’s poster (of all things), and then upon reading about the movie, I was interested in the ample amount of swearing featured in the film. Whatever it was, I was excited to seen In The Loop and it did not disappoint.
In The Loop is a political (if you will) comedy that includes both British and American humor. The U.S President and the U.K. Prime Minister are both interested in a war. On the U.S. side, General Miller (played very well by James Gandolfini) and on the U.K. side, the Prime Minister’s top “spin-doctor,” Malcolm Tucker (played perfectly by Peter Capaldi) both think war is a terrible idea and use their best qualities to try and make the...
