I’d imagine every one of us, despite our individual life situations, however privileged or difficult they may be, wouldn’t have too much trouble coming up with a pretty long list of people and circumstances for which to be grateful, during the upcoming week traditionally reserved for the expression of thanks as well as throughout the entirety of the year.
Even in our brave new world, where gratitude and humility and generosity of spirit often seem to be in short supply, at the mercy of greed, abuse of power, disregard for the rule of law, and megalomaniac self-interest cynically masquerading as an aggressive strain of nationalist, populist passion, there are good, everyday reasons to look around and take stock of blessings in one’s immediate surroundings.

Chicago – No one would call talented one-man-show artist John Michael conventional, at least if they are in their right mind. So ironically, after tackling sexually transmitted disease in his last solo performance, he takes on the vagrancies of old age and caring for elderly patients in his truly heartfelt “Dementia Me.”
“Dementia Me” will run at the Den Theatre within the Wicker Park neighborhood in Chicago from August 15th through September 12th, 2016, on consecutive Mondays at 8pm (details below). This solo performance is a tour de force, using mostly balloons and party favors for props – Michael even invites everyone to a “birthday party” for one of the patients before the show. The emotions in the show will affect anyone who has known the heartbreak of seeing loved ones become less of themselves as they age (which is practically everybody), and how that state of being leads the main character himself to other revelations.

Screen Australia.s guidelines for funding documentaries will remain in place for the rest of this year after the agency decided to extend a review of its funding policy.
The reasons for the postponement have been questioned by the Australian Directors Guild and some documentary filmmakers who want the draft guidelines to be implemented.
"It is concerning," Adg executive director Kingston Anderson told If today. "We have been discussing this for the last six months. We think the draft guidelines are a great step forward. We need to know why the process is being delayed." .
Yarra Bank Films' Dr Trevor Graham said, "The draft documentary guidelines composed by Screen Australia were a welcome attempt to address the decline in the one-off documentary in the Oz landscape that resulted from public broadcasters turning their back on them in favour of factual series.
"Screen Australia.s own research acknowledges this decline. And...

Conrad Rothmann..
The film business was saddened to receive the news of the passing of SFX impresario and creator of illusions, Conrad Rothman on 21 June 2013 - the winter solstice. Conrad died of a heart attack on his way to a hospital in Sydney. An American import into our film industry in the 1970.s, Conrad was perhaps one of the first SFX men to hit our shores, and he was most welcome. .He was thought of as the .stunt-glass-kid. of Australia..no one did glass like Conrad., ex-wife and dear friend Natalie Hammond said of him. Conrad went to film school with Steven Spielberg and Richard Franklin. He worked often with the latter and wished he had with the former!
His final years were spent working out of Fox in Sydney in an office and workroom with Aet, where he was known as Corny. Conrad was the genuine eccentric and much loved by everyone.

"Cars 2, directed (like several great Pixar films of the last two decades) by John Lasseter, finds itself in the unlucky position of the not-so-bright kid in a brilliant family," finds Slate's Dana Stevens. "No matter if his performance in school is comfortably average; he'll always be seen as a disappointment compared to his stellar siblings. There's nothing really objectionable about Cars 2, although parents of young children should be warned that a few evil vehicles meet violently inauspicious ends. It's sweet-spirited, visually delightful (if aurally cacophonous), and it will make for a pleasant enough family afternoon at the movies. But we've come to expect so much more than mere pleasantness from Pixar that Cars 2 feels almost like a betrayal."
Nick Schager for the Voice: "Pixar's Cars franchise takes a sharp turn from Nascar mayhem and rural red-state-targeted 50s nostalgia to 007 espionage with this upgraded sequel, though in its...

Lillian Roxon was a pioneering music journalist in the hedonistic rock ‘n’ roll world of the 1960s. A transplant from Australia, she made her mark in the boho scene of Manhattan, hanging out with the likes of Bob Dylan, The Velvet Underground, and Andy Warhol. She had a sixth sense for predicting who was going to be culturally significant, and her charm and enthusiasm was infectious. Paul Clarke profiles her brief but incredible story in Mother of Rock: Lillian Roxon. Roxon was raised in Australia after her family emigrated from Italy in the 1930s to escape fascism. She was a free spirit who preferred to live as a single and adventurous woman in 1950s Sydney rather than wait at home to be married. Wherever there was a party, she was there. Getting started in tabloid journalism, she moved to NYC in 1959 and became the correspondent for several Australian women’s magazines.

The organizers at the Toronto International Film Festival have put together one hell of an impressive line-up that has grown significantly since my first list announcing the Galas and Special Presentations, a pair of lists that have also grown since then.
The lists have grown to include Massy Tadjedin's Last Night starring Keira Knightley, Sam Worthington, Eva Mendes and Guillaume Canet, which will serve as the closing night film.
It's also grown to include Danny Boyle's 127 Hours starring James Franco. The Toronto International Film Festival has announced that the Australian documentaries Machete Maidens Unleashed! and Mother of Rock: Lillian Roxon will both screen at this year’s edition.
Mark Hartley’s Machete Maidens Unleashed! premiered at the Melbourne International Film Festival, and documents “the wild and unruly world of genre filmmaking in the Philippines when the country was a back-lot for a bevy of B-movie mavericks and cinema visionaries”.
Paul Clarke’s Mother of Rock: Lillian Roxon is about the Australian rock journalist who witnessed New York’s infamous punk scene and mingled with the likes of John and Yoko, the Velvet Underground and Janis Joplin and was one of the first on the scene to champion the work of Bob Dylan, Jimi Hendrix and the Doors.

As I've said in the past, I am not someone to rush out and watch a ton of documentaries, even though I love nearly every single one I see. Toronto -- Tribeca may have offered a sneak peek, but the Toronto International Film Festival has the world premiere of Alex Gibney's "Client 9: The Rise and Fall of Eliot Spitzer" from Magnolia Pictures.
Oscar-winning Gibney's latest documentary about the sex scandal that enveloped the former New York governor, and which includes an on-camera interview with Spitzer and some of the players that brought about his political downfall, was billed as a "work-in-progress" at Tribeca.
Now Toronto gets Gibney's finished doc ahead of a Nov. 5 theatrical release, and Spitzer getting a CNN primetime newshow gig this fall alongside Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Kathleen Parker.
"Client 9" also figured Wednesday among 25 factual films unveiled by fest organizers as part of Toronto's Real to Reel, Masters and Sprockets Family Zone sidebars.
