Sports dramas are familiar to the television landscape, and are often beloved. Fans have leaned into series like “Glow,” “All American,” and even the mid-2000s cult classic “Friday Night Lights.” Yet it’s not the competitive action that keeps audiences pulled in weekly, or amid hours-long binges: It’s the characters and the worlds carefully crafted around them.
It’s been nearly two years since the Season 1 finale of the Michael Waldron-created series “Heels” aired. Set in the fictional town of Duffy, Georgia, “Heels” follows brothers Jack (Stephen Amell) and Ace Spade (Alexander Ludwig), the stars of the Duffy Wrestling League (Dwl). The league and its dilapidated dome are the life’s work of the Spade brothers’ late father, Tom (David James Elliot). Jack has struggled to keep Tom’s fledgling dream and business alive in his absence.

Twin Peaks Recap is a weekly column by Keith Uhlich covering David Lynch and Mark Frost's limited, 18-episode continuation of the Twin Peaks television series.Much of David Lynch's work is about regression, or regressiveness, about people who are most comfortable when indulging (really, hiding behind) their baser instincts. An acid-jazz saxophonist with murder on his mind might take refuge in the body and soul of a teenage delinquent (Lost Highway), or a midwestern girl who has played and lost the Hollywood game might concoct a candy-colored dream-life in which she finally attains Tinseltown stardom (Mulholland Dr.). But these escapes always prove to be traps, and cyclical ones at that. What goes around comes around. What has happened before will happen again. Even Blue Velvet's Dorothy Vallens (Isabella Rossellini), finally liberated from her abusive sexual relationship with Frank Booth (Dennis Hopper), "still can see blue velvet through my tears.

Twin Peaks Recap is a weekly column by Keith Uhlich covering David Lynch and Mark Frost's limited, 18-episode continuation of the Twin Peaks television series. There's a brief, very beautiful moment in Part 7 of the new Twin Peaks, during the scene in which hotelier Benjamin Horne (Richard Beymer) and his secretary Beverly Paige (Ashley Judd) are investigating a strange sound emanating from the walls of the Great Northern. Ben points in the direction that he thinks the soft, soothing tone is coming from, and for a second he seems to be pointing right at the camera—past it, really…toward our world, at those of us on the other side of the fiction/fact divide. A blink-and-you'll-miss-it breach, but it lays some subtle groundwork for what follows: The aesthetically and thematically provocative Part 8 fitted the Twin Peaks mythos into our very real history of atomic destruction. And this week's...

Twin Peaks Recap is a weekly column by Keith Uhlich covering David Lynch and Mark Frost's limited, 18-episode continuation of the Twin Peaks television series. So that's how David Lynch does an info dump. First, with a cheeky, knowing scene featuring the brothers Horne: "Jerry, what's going on?" asks Ben (Richard Beymer) after his cannabis-infused sibling (David Patrick Kelly) phones him from the woods. "I think I'm high!…I don't know where I am!" Jerry screams, perhaps speaking for a good subsection of the Twin Peaks revival audience, who have, over the six prior installments, been given only glimpses of a larger picture. Narrative momentum comes in asides; the more prevalent longueurs are reserved for atmosphere and mood, for full immersion in apparent stasis.Part 7 shakes things up, following the brotherly freak-out with several story reveals that come in quick succession. But there's a niggling sense throughout all the...

Cast your mind back to October of 2014, a time when the largely dormant Twin Peaks fanbase was sent into a collective tailspin upon hearing news that the cult classic would return via limited series.
Fast forward five months and change and the abrupt departure of series creator David Lynch threatened to throw a spanner in the works, after the prestigious filmmaker bowed out of the small-screen revival citing “complications.” That all came to a head in the weeks thereafter and, thankfully, Lynch was back on board.
Whether said complication proved to be a storm in a tea cup is something we’ll likely never know, but the one thing we do know for sure is that Twin Peaks is coming back in 2017 and, according to Ray Wise, is being aligned for a summer premiere over at Showtime.

The new "Twin Peaks" isn't slated to debut on Showtime until 2017, but a flurry of speculation about it happened last week with a tweet from Go For Locations indicating that filming had wrapped on the "first two seasons" of the series.
The episode count for the David Lynch-directed series was always in question, but that tweet suggested we'd be getting even more episodes than originally planned. Said tweet has since been deleted, so we'll have to wait to see how that pans out.
in the meantime in more official news, Showtime, Lynch and Mark Frost has released the official cast list for the new series with a whopping 217 names across the various episodes - a list that includes some real surprise big name inclusions such as Monica Bellucci, Michael Cera, Naomi Watts, Tim Roth, Jennifer Jason Leigh, Eddie Vedder, Ashley Judd, Ernie Hudson, Jim Belushi, Richard Chamberlain, Laura Dern,...

Strangely enough, Pam Grier’s last Blaxploitation feature, 1975’s Sheba, Baby, would be the title to introduce her to a much wider audience thanks to its PG rating. Though undoubtedly adult in theme, it’s a kittenish exercise compared to the violence, gratuitous sex, and shameless taken-for-granted racist and misogynistic antics of earlier efforts. Its classification as the final chapter of Grier’s Blaxploitation days is also sort of a misnomer, since this refers to the last time she’d don her famous persona as an action star in pursuit of a more serious career, heading into Drum (a sequel to the infamous Mandingo), starring opposite Richard Pryor in Greased Lightning, and even a Ray Bradbury adaptation in Something Wicked This Way Comes (1983). But 1975 was one of several sterling years for Grier, headlining three films, though none of them would eventually reach the same iconicity as the prior year’s...

Susan Sarandon earned herself an Oscar for her work in “Dead Man Walking,” a film directed by her then husband, Tim Robbins. She plays Sister Prejean, a nun who befriends a death row inmate named Matthew (Oscar nominated Sean Penn) as they confide in one another and build a convincing relationship as the days and hours tick down until his execution. Robbins intercuts the scenes with Sarandon and Penn with moments of the actual crime taking place, creating a storytelling rift that both supports and contradicts moments within the film, creating two very carefully drawn and developed characters. In addition to visiting him regularly, Prejean begins the crusade to find him a lawyer to make an appeal, doing all she can to delay his sentence being carried out. ★★★★☆ After co-writing Larry Clarke's Palme d'Or-nominated cult smash Kids (1995), then directing Gummo two years later, director Harmony Korine has spent the majority of his time of late making short films. However, 2013 saw Korine breeze back into UK cinemas with Spring Breakers (2012); an explosive tale of sun, sea and sex in a Us beach town. Korine takes care to use every tool at his disposal to further communicate his themes, including casting; enlisting former-heartthrob James Franco to play a sleazy gangster and former High School Musical (2006) sweetheart Vanessa Hudgens to portray a drug-taking siren.
Brit (Ashley Benson), Candy (Hudgens) and Cotty (Rachel Korine) are desperate to go on spring break; an American College tradition involving legions of students descending on beach towns to get drunk, have sex and party hard. Seriously strapped for cash, the girls rob a fast food joint for extra funds. Post robbery, they grab their naive,...

Teenage Wasteland: Elgin James Gives Us Teen Angst for Debut
A Sundance Lab creation, Elgin James’ debut, Little Birds is a strong first effort, one borne primarily from an interesting mutation of the professed director’s own life experiences, which he was at first going to film. Somehow, gangland activities turned into a coming of age tale of two adolescent females, and the result, while not entirely breaking new ground, manages to reach an affecting grace, one that manages to gear up into a tense boil.
Best friends Lily (Juno Temple) and Alison (Kay Panabaker), are continuously on the lookout for more exciting activities in their ramshackle Salton Sea town, where decaying plant matter permeates the air, and local denizens are either comfortable in their boredom or violent in their wish to escape from it. Of the two, Lily is definitely the more rebellious and defiant, obviously eager to discover boys,...

All the news, reviews, comment and buzz from the Croisette on day six of the Cannes film festival
10.31am: Hello again: Cannes 2012 day six rolls round – after a very good weekend for the competition which we saw a wonderfully well reviewed Michael Haneke film, and good notices for two missing-in-action auteurs, Cristian Mungiu and Thomas Vinterberg, with Beyond the Hills and The Hunt (Jagten) respectively.
Outside the Palme d'Or nominees, things were a tad less rosy. "Pasty" Pete Doherty showed up for a screening of his acting debut, Confession of a Child of the Century: reaction, to be honest, was not good. Catherine will be filing a review later on – the word "catastrophic" was used. Brandon "son of David" Cronenberg debuted Antiviral: again, word was iffy; we'll have Peter's review launched fairly soon. And Henry appears to be giving girl group yarn The Sapphires a qualified thumbs-up: "sugary" would be the key concept here,...

In the first story, an abandoned briefcase is found at the Stock Exchange. A robot is sent to check if it's a possible bomb and the X-ray shows traces of nitrates. There are 60 seconds in which to obtain prints from the case and then to disarm it. The briefcase is blown up in a controlled explosion. Mac (Gary Sinise) finds a message inside the case: "Incase something happens to me." Mac gets Danny (Carmine Giovinazzo) to run a DNA sample. He checks on Codis and looks into the financial data. Adding he can work around a spreadsheet. He doesn't get a hit on Afis, but gets a hit from the New York Mercantile Stock Exchange. The print matched Luke Sutton (Steven Flynn) but he's missing. His apartment is trashed inside. Aiden (Vanessa Ferlito) thinks he could have been kidnapped. Mac: "Something happened and it wasn't good." Well that's obvious. Mac...

Title: Contagion Directed By: Steven Soderbergh Starring: Matt Damon, Gwyneth Paltrow, Laurence Fishburne, Jude Law, Marion Cotillard, Kate Winslet, Larry Clarke, Anna Jacoby-Heron, Jennifer Ehle, Demetri Martin, Elliott Gould, Bryan Cranston, Chin Han Contagion is the scariest movie of the year, and that’s coming from someone with a pension for horror films. Unlike most worldwide disaster movies, Contagion doesn’t sensationalize the issue on a grand scale in an effort to shock the audience, rather it tells the tale via a variety of intimate scenarios, both giving the audience that vast scope, but also putting you right in the middle of the disaster alongside the characters that are fighting through it....

Are the brilliantly strange films of Yorgos Lanthimos and Athina Rachel Tsangari a product of Greece's economic turmoil? And will they continue to make films in the troubled country?
It must be the worst kiss in screen history. Two young women face each other in front of a white wall. They crane their necks, lock lips and awkwardly flex their jaws. There's no hint of passion. They look more like two birds trying to feed each other. After an excruciating minute of this, they pause. One of them says she feels like throwing up. They clumsily rub their tongues together a little more, only to end up spitting at each other, then blowing raspberries, before hissing at each other like cats.
Attenberg, by Greek director Athina Rachel Tsangari, doesn't get much more normal from there on in. Its heroine, Marina, is a 23-year-old outsider who's largely disgusted by the idea of human contact.

Word came down this morning that British writer/director Simon Rumley (pictured left), who shocked and startled viewers with The Living And The Dead, has now shifted to American soil for his latest feature Red, White & Blue. Described as “a realistic, dark revenge movie,” it’s currently shooting in Austin, TX, and Fango got in touch with Rumley for more details.
Produced by Bob Portal and Simon Markham, the film is executive-produced by Masters Of Horror/Fear Itself’s Adam Goldworm, Doug Abbot, Judy Lipsey and Tim League (first photo, at left with Rumley), who heads up Austin’s celebrated Alamo Drafthouse Cinemas.
