Of all the titles credited to Robert Downey Jr.’s name to date, perhaps the one that perfectly aligns with his real-life personality is that of Tony Stark in his Iron Man saga. But while that is still regarded as one of his best performances to date despite him last playing it almost half a decade ago, his iconic portrayal of the fan-favorite character wouldn’t have been possible due to one movie.

This one movie was none other than his 2005 masterpiece Kiss Kiss Bang Bang, which pretty much brought his career back on track. But his success through the film wasn’t the only thing that made Downey Jr.’s superhero debut possible, because what seems to have further added to his star-studded portrayal of Stark must have been the genius performance by Val Kilmer in the 2005 film!

The highest-paid actors in Hollywood — Tom Cruise, Robert Downey Jr., Keanu Reeves, and others — could easily command millions of dollars in upfront salary. For Avengers: Endgame, Downey Jr. earned a $20 million upfront salary and a $75 million total income. The precedent for these humongous salaries was Elizabeth Taylor’s upfront salary of $1 million for Cleopatra.

A celebrity from the age of 11, Elizabeth Taylor was practiced at public relations for almost all her life, so there aren’t many personal revelations in Elizabeth Taylor: The Lost Tapes. But Nanette Burstein’s elegantly constructed documentary, mostly in Taylor’s own words backed by illuminating archival images, works as a lively bit of film history about movie stardom in the volatile 1960s as the studio system was fading and the media exploding.
The film — which premiered at Cannes in the Cannes Classics sidebar — is based on 40 hours of recently rediscovered audiotapes, recordings Taylor made in the mid-1960s for a ghost-written memoir (long out of print). It was the most frenzied moment of her fame, when she was coming off the paparazzi-fueled scandal that was Cleopatra. Taylor, who died in 2011, recalls her many marriages — four when she made these recordings, since she was on the first of two...

There have been countless books written about the immortal star Elizabeth Taylor, even some credited to her as both memoir or autobiography including 1989’s Elizabeth On Elizabeth. But a book released on January 1, 1965, probably comes closest to a pure autobiography, and the cover simply says, Elizabeth Taylor by Elizabeth Taylor. It is a by-the-numbers account of her life through her own words up until that point, but it actually was written by Richard Meryman, a journalist credited with among other things the last interview with Marilyn Monroe.
Meryman got Taylor to sit for some tape-recorded sessions in 1964, so he would be able to write the book as if Taylor did it herself. Sixty years later, those presumed “lost” recordings have been found and cleared for release by Taylor’s and Meryman’s estates. They have been in Meryman’s wife’s possession all these years,...

In just three days' time, Francis Ford Coppola's self-funded passion project Megalopolis — a film over forty years in the making — will make its world premiere at the 77th edition of the Cannes Film Festival. But whilst most of us sadly won't be living it up with Coppola and co on the Croisette this week, we are at least starting to glimpse the fruits of The Godfather filmmaker's labours. Last week we got a first clip of the film, and yesterday — following the news that the mega-budget epic has finally secured UK distribution — Coppola dropped a brand new teaser trailer for his opus. Check it out below:
Missiles raining over the Statue of Liberty. Laurence Fishburne's inimitable tones asking, "When does an Empire die?" Aubrey Plaza eating fruit on a chaise longue like Cleopatra reincarnate. Ben-Hur-evoking chariot racing and Blade Runner-esque cyberpunk tech. Adam Driver serving brooding looks over epic,...

A gripping plot, superb acting, thought-out dialog, an amazing ability to hold the audience's attention, sex, violence, and struggle for power – Game of Thrones was famous for all of this, but was it the first of its kind?
Perhaps in every genre there is the series that was unfairly closed at the most interesting moment. For fans of science fiction, Firefly became such a wound in the heart, and for fans of historical dramas, there is Rome, the return of which most connoisseurs of the genre dream of.
As it happens, Rome has only two seasons. But even that is enough to appreciate it.
Rome Was Game of Thrones’ Predecessor
Even before Game of Thrones, HBO and the BBC tried the "sex, blood and political intrigue" formula with Rome, which was released in 2005. And the historical period was more appropriate than ever: the Roman Empire just after the Gallic War...

Renowned for her acting prowess, Angelina Jolie almost portrayed the historical figure Cleopatra in a film, which was ultimately canceled. Following the disastrous reception of Joseph L. Mankiewicz’s 1963 film, numerous filmmakers have expressed interest in bringing their vision of the Egyptian queen to the screen.

Brian Helgeland has been discussing his script for Sony’s aborted take on Cleopatra which was set to star Angelina Jolie…
Cleopatra is one of those iconic figures that Hollywood seems perpetually interested in bringing to the screen again, even if the vast majority of these projects never seem to get anywhere.
One of the other nearly-ran Cleopatra projects was set to feature Angelina Jolie back in 2011. Writer and director Brian Helgeland has been chatting about his time on the project as the first writer to get a crack at the script. According to the director of Payback and A Knight’s Tale, it would have included some surprising events, apparently rooted in history:
“I was the very first writer on Cleopatra when it was being developed for Angelina Jolie to star in, which was almost made,” Helgeland said in an interview with Inverse.

Long live Queen Cleopatra, even if her film adaptations have been plagued for more than half a century.
After Joseph L. Mankiewicz’s 1963 “Cleopatra” starring Elizabeth Taylor made history as one of the biggest box office disasters ever, a long-gestating adaptation was set with Angelina Jolie attached to star (and directors like David Fincher and Ang Lee being attached at different times). “A Knight’s Tale” and “Man on Fire” writer Brian Helgeland wrote the script, and while the film was “almost made,” it eventually fell by the wayside.

The nuclear war genre has long been a staple in Tinseltown, with filmmakers putting their own unique spin on the catastrophic scenario. And, when it comes to nuclear, not discussing last year’s Oppenheimer will not do us any favors. Whether it is the ocean eyes of Cillian Murphy or Ludwig Göransson’s relentless score, the film is clearly one of Christopher Nolan’s greatest works.
And it appears that Denis Villeneuve is following in Nolan’s footsteps, as the former may have found his next project in the same genre. The Dune director and Legendary are in talks to collaborate on an adaptation of Annie Jacobsen’s Nuclear War: A Scenario.
Cillian Murphy in and as Oppenheimer
That being said, we are eager to see if Villeneuve’s approach to this dreaded topic will pose a serious threat to Oscar winner Oppenheimer.

Director Denis Villeneuve is currently developing Dune: Messiah, but it’s also being reported that he’ll adapt the non-fiction book Nuclear War: A Scenario after that.
We heard last month that a sequel to this year’s sci-fi opus Dune: Part Two was greenlit and in the process of being written at Legendary Entertainment. While Dune: Messiah bubbles on the stove, though, it’s being reported that director Denis Villeneuve has another project in the works at Legendary – an adaptation of the book Nuclear War: A Scenario.
A New York Times best seller by Annie Jacobsen, Nuclear War is described by its publisher Penguin as a “edge-of-your-seat thriller” with the author basing her what-if vision of armageddon on interviews with military experts.
Deadline reports that Legendary has bought the rights to the novel, and that Villeneuve is expected to make Nuclear War after he’s finished Dune: Messiah.

Though likely shot before he gave literally the one Academy Awards speech worth anything on this godforsaken earth, we can submit his new Prada ad starring Scarlett Johansson as evidence that Jonathan Glazer––whatever that weird, genocide-denying Google Doc literally anyone could sign implies––will endure. His first work since The Zone of Interest and ten-years-on Under the Skin reunion fuses a Persona-like fixation on one of the world’s most famous faces with words from Macbeth and Antony and Cleopatra, the latter a text I assume nobody but unhappy, difficult people (hello) are reading nowadays.

Audiences finally have a follow-up to Jonathan Glazer’s Under the Skin, kinda.
The Oscar-winning filmmaker has teamed up once again with Under the Skin star Scarlett Johansson for an ad to promote Italian fashion house Prada’s Galleria bag collection.
The ad, which dropped Wednesday, features Johansson struggling to recite lines from Shakespeare, including famous passages from Anthony and Cleopatra and Macbeth. “The campaign is a celebration of technique, an ode to the mechanism of acting as the true motor of cinema – and to the talent of the actor,” per intel from Prada. “The still and motion images showcase Johansson as an actor, honing her art – repeating phrases with different feeling and meaning, she showcases the infinite self-transformation that define an actor’s skill.”

When Assassin’s Creed: Origins was released at the tail-end of October 2017, it came during a moment of transition and epiphany for the long-running video game franchise. After being launched a decade earlier, almost to the day, there had been a new Assassin’s Creed title virtually every year from the game publisher Ubisoft. Until 2016. Due to spending so many years returning to the same formula, Assassin’s Creed developers realized they needed time off; they needed to regroup and reimagine; they needed bold change in what their vision of the future could be.
Abubakar Salim could relate. Fresh out of a classical education at the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art, Salim did not necessarily anticipate discovering a career in video game voice acting and motion-capture, yet his casting in the central role of Assassin’s Creed: Origins as Bayek of Siwa had a life-altering effect.

Trisha Paytas is telling me about the last time she got yelled at on the internet.
It was after a Halloween episode of her podcast, Just Trish, in which the influencer and YouTuber dressed as her then-obsession, the Weeknd in the HBO series The Idol. Wearing pale-pink hospital scrubs, a fake soul patch, and a do-rag, Paytas argued to her co-host, Oscar Gracey, that being a “full-time stay-at-home parent is 10 times harder than someone who can leave.” She referred to the nonparenting labor of working moms as “a break.” The backlash was vicious.

With a script on the go, great early box office numbers in the can and key financiers up for it, a third Dune film – Dune: Messiah – is looking like a certainty.
Dune: Part Two is in cinemas right now and happily, everything looks to be going well for Denis Villeneuve’s big-budget slice of sci-fi cinema. The film is getting great reviews (here’s ours) and making plenty of cash at the box office too.
Our own Ryan Lambie called it ‘2024’s first truly great multiplex film’ and critics tend to be in agreement that the ever-reliant Villeneuve has done the business again.
Those good vibes seem to have extended as far as Legendary Entertainment, the film’s production company and co-financier. The company’s CEO, Josh Grode was asked this week about a third Dune film and he expressed confidence that it would happen, stating:

Denis Villenueve’s follow-up to the 2021 sci-fi epic Dune has arrived in theaters and everyone is going crazy about the film since its release. The film has been lauded by both critics and audiences for not falling into the ‘sequel trap’ as it successfully extended upon the lore established by the first film while also fleshing out core characters in exciting ways.
A still from Dune: Part Two
The film’s ending left Paul Atreides in an interesting place, a significant evolution from his arc in the first film. Many fans were expecting a post-credits scene of some sort as the MCU has made that trend popular. However, director Villeneuve wanted part 2 to stand on its own and not rely on the tease of what’s to come.

A documentary series about Elizabeth Taylor is in the works at the BBC, with Kim Kardashian among the producers.
Elizabeth Taylor is undoubtedly one of the most iconic film stars of her era. By the mid 1960s, she was the highest paid film star in the world.
There have been copious books written and films made about the star too – Taylor has been portrayed by Helena Bonham Carter, Lindsay Lohan, Sherilyn Fenn and Louella Parsons among others; a biopic called A Special Relationship starring Rachel Weisz and written by Simon Beaufoy was announced in 2019, but there has been no news since then.
Now though, the BBC has commissioned a three part documentary, Elizabeth Taylor: Rebel Superstar, which will be executive produced by Kim Kardashian, Kari Lia and Hamish Fergusson.

Not since the days of Ben-Hur, Cleopatra and Fellini classics like La Dolce Vita has Rome enjoyed the boom in film production it’s experiencing at the moment. From Tom Cruise racing through the eternal city’s narrow streets in Mission Impossible — Dead Reckoning Part One, to Matteo Garrone’s Oscar-nominated immigrant drama Lo Capitano, the Italian capital is in the midst of a resurgence that harkens back to its “Hollywood on the Tiber” heyday.

Kim Kardashian is set to both executive produce and feature in an upcoming docuseries about Elizabeth Taylor.
Commissioned by the BBC, the three-part documentary — given the working title “Elizabeth Taylor: Rebel Superstar” — is coming from the Oscar-winning “Searching for Sugar Man” production house Passion Pictures, behind the recent Sundance hit “Super/Man” about Christopher Reeve.
The series will take a deep dive into Taylor’s craft and technique as an actor — one who mesmerized cinema-goers, but also changed the relationship between audiences and stars — showing how she reinvented the nature of fame, even as she smashed the glass ceiling in Hollywood, before going on to become a billion-dollar businesswoman, activist and advocate. Fremantle will be shopping the doc series globally.

Denzel Washington being cast in Antoine Fuqua’s upcoming Netflix movie as ancient Carthaginian general Hannibal is sparking some controversy in Tunisia, the home country of the great military commander.
According to French newspaper Courrier International, there are complaints about depicting the Carthaginian general as a Black African being made in the media and the Tunisian parliament. Member of Parliament Yassine Mami has pointed out that Hannibal, who was born in 247 BC in Carthage – now known as Tunis, the Tunisian capital – was of West Asian Semitic origin. “There is a risk of falsifying history: we need to take position on this subject,” the Tunisian politician reportedly stated.
Concurrently, French-language Tunisian newspaper La Presse has published an editorial in which it similarly objects that depicting Hannibal as a Black African is “according to Tunisians and many observers, a historical error.”
However, Tunisian culture minister Hayet Ketat-Guermazi had a different, more pragmatic take on the matter.

Glenn Danzig (Verotika) brought his Vampire Spaghetti-Western Death Rider in the House of Vampires to select theaters back in 2021, but it’s been quite a while since we’ve heard a peep about the project. When will you actually be able to watch the movie?

Screenwriter Eric Roth reveals he’s written a sci-fi script for Denis Villeneuve that is “certainly about eternity.”
We know that Denis Villeneuve has already set his sights on completing his Dune trilogy, so the celebrated director’s attention is most likely focused on grinding the gears of a trilogy-capper irreversibly into motion in the months preceding Dune: Part II's delayed March opening.
However, it seems the filmmaker has been thinking about life beyond Dune, given that the acclaimed screenwriter Eric Roth has revealed that he’s penned a ‘secret’ script for Villeneuve, one that is about “space and time”. Roth was appearing on the A Script Apart podcast when he made the revelation, and while he didn’t give away too much, the project certainly sounded like it belongs in Villeneuve’s cerebral house style, given that he’s already made thought-provoking films such as Arrival and Blade Runner 2049.

Roth was appearing on the A Script Apart podcast when he made the revelation, and while he didn’t give away too much, the project certainly sounded like it belongs in Villeneuve’s cerebral house style, given that he’s already made thought-provoking films such as Arrival and Blade Runner 2049.

In July 1798, Napoleon led a campaign into Egypt and Syria as a means to conquer the region and, in the words of unreliable history textbooks, to establish trade and scientific exchange. It was Napoleon's campaign to Egypt and Syria that uncovered the Rosetta Stone, although it came at the cost of about 65,000 lives. Napoleon's campaign has been famously dramatized in a series of paintings, several of which director Ridley Scott recreated for his new biopic "Napoleon." The above scene of Napoleon (Joaquin Phoenix) sitting on horseback in front of the Sphinx is taken from Jean-Léon Gérôme's 1897 portrait, called "Oedipus," painted to celebrate the centennial of the event.
After Scott stages a scene of Napoleon firing cannons at the Pyramids of Giza, he then recreates another notable painting, this time by French artist Maurice Orange who, in the late 19th century, painted "Bonaparte at the Pyramids." In Orange's portrait,...

Is it really worthwhile for me to comment further? Just imagine throwing into a defective Thermomix in no particular order Bruce Lee's early classics, (not-the-best) Blaxploitation undercover stories, few OSS177 and other cheap cold war spy fictions with just a drop of Nunsploitation to spice it up. Tempting, isn't it? No surprise to see the B-movies undisputed ruler Quentin Tarantino resurrecting this underground piece for an interview to the Straight Times while promoting “Kill Bill”.

Obviously, the name Cleopatra Wong is directly inspired form Jack Starrett's “Cleopatra Jones” (1973), just like the introductive “They call her… “ is a common pattern of the Exploitation scene, the most famous probably being the Spaghetti Western “They Call Me Trinity” (1970). Moreover seeing the coming-from-nowhere-soon-returning-to-nowhere leading actress Doris Young getting renamed Marrie Lee is certainly making her a sibling of King Bruce,...

It was announced six years ago that Denis Villeneuve would direct a Cleopatra movie for Sony Pictures. It’s been some time since we last heard about the project, but scooper Daniel Richtman believes that Villeneuve will finally start shooting the movie next year.
Not only that, but the report seems to indicate that Denis Villeneuve will be reuniting with his Dune stars as Zendaya is attached to star as Cleopatra. It adds that Timothée Chalamet has been offered the role of Octavius and Daniel Craig is being eyed for Caesar. Very interesting, but take it with a grain of salt for now until something more official has been announced.

Zendaya, the Emmy-winning star of Euphoria and Spider-Man: No Way Home, is set to play the legendary Egyptian queen Cleopatra in a new biopic directed by Denis Villeneuve, the acclaimed filmmaker behind Dune and Arrival. The film, which is based on the best-selling book by Stacy Schiff, will explore Cleopatra’s ruthless rise to power using her skills as a seductress, a strategist, and a survivor.
According to a tweet by insider Daniel Richtman, Timothée Chalamet, who co-starred with Zendaya in Dune, was offered the role of Octavius, the Roman general who became Cleopatra’s enemy after the death of Julius Caesar. Daniel Craig, the current James Bond, is being sought to play Caesar, Cleopatra’s lover and ally. The film is expected to begin production in late 2024.

Cleopatra has been a popular subject for Hollywood adaptations, most famously portrayed by Elizabeth Taylor in the 1963 epic that nearly bankrupted 20th Century Fox.

The angriest filmmaking fights that I’ve witnessed over the years have not been about cost or cast; they were about length. The movies were too long but so were the fights.
I re-lived some of them this week when I saw Martin Scorsese’s Killers of the Flower Moon. It’s is a big success with audiences at 3 hours and 26 minutes. That’s about an hour longer than Napoleon, Ridley Scott’s epic that opens next month, and half an hour longer than Oppenheimer.
My confession: I start getting twitchy when movies lunge pass the two-hour mark — an attention deficit problem that supposedly affects Gen Z more than geriatrics. I’ve been influenced by filmmakers like Hal Ashby, who started as an editor and believed that “films should tell their story and move on” (I worked with him on Harold & Maude and Being There).
Given my twitchiness, I suspected...

At long last, Crossroads is back. It’s the answer to a Britney Spears fan’s prayers. Britney’s 2002 movie-star showcase is finally returning to the big screen for two nights, on Oct. 23 and 25, to go with her new tell-all memoir, The Woman in Me, which drops on Oct. 24. Crossroads was a box-office smash at the time, but it’s been scandalously unavailable for years — most fans have never gotten the chance to see it since it’s not streaming anywhere. This movie has been hidden away for far too long.
