In 1972, Bob Abel and Pierre Adige began following Elvis Presley on tour. The pair had recently released a film following Joe Cocker on tour, and Elvis was their next subject. Abel was a bit wary about filming Elvis after seeing him put on a lackluster performance in Las Vegas, but he quickly grew to like the singer. He said there was much to admire about Elvis, but he also noted a peculiar hollowness to him.
The director of ‘Elvis on Tour’ noticed a sadness to the singer
When Abel met the singer, he informed him that he wanted to do his best to portray the real Elvis. This required cooperation on Elvis’ part.
“I want to shoot the real you but the trade off is, you’ve got to be open with me,” Abel said, per the book Careless Love: The Unmaking of Elvis Presley by Peter Guralnick. “If I...

Earlier today, we were sad to hear that veteran character actor Louis Gossett Jr had passed away at 87. While we have to get used to the fact that our favorite actors are all human, and like all of us, eventually pass away, it can’t help but hurt anytime we lose a legend like this. But he leaves behind a rich legacy, so let’s look back at five of his coolest roles.
An Officer and a Gentleman:
Louis Gossett Jr. won an Oscar for Best Supporting Actor for his performance in this, and next to R. Lee Ermey in Full Metal Jacket, he’s likely the guy everyone pictures when they think of a drill sergeant. While folks usually think of this as a romance due to stars Richard Gere and Debra Winger and the famous Joe Cocker song, “Up Where We Belong,” the R-rated movie is a lot harder than you remember.

Ariana Grande and Bowen Young could not keep it together during a sketch on Saturday Night Live tonight.
The pair brought to life songs that did not make it into the hit film Moulin Rouge which included “Up Where We Belong,” originally sung by Jennifer Warnes and Joe Cocker; “Do-Re-Mi” by Julie Andrews; “Creep” by TLC; “Happy Birthday”; and “Pride (In the Name of Love)” by U2 among others.
While they made it nearly all the way through the sketch before breaking character, Yang began to lose focus while performing Shania Twain’s hit song “Man! I Feel Like a Woman!” He continued to have a fit of giggles as he and Grande sang “Happy Birthday” for the umpteenth time leading the latter also to break character. It only gets worse when the comedian dips the singer and attempts to sing “I Will Always Love You,” written by Dolly Parton...

Italian opera singer Andrea Bocelli is currently on tour and has concerts all throughout 2024.
A few days ago, Bocelli announced some concert postponements due to “health challenges” and offered rescheduled dates. In a Facebook post, the Italian singer made another announcement that his voice was back and that he would be performing at both the original and rescheduled dates.
“I’m double honored and grateful because in my heart, I am already at Madison Square Garden, where I’ll be singing to celebrate Christmas on Wednesday and Thursday,” Bocelli’s post read. “I want to embrace New York and the entire nation in song, thanking them again for their love, and also for their patience. Speaking of patience, it’s a virtue I’ve had to practice recently by stopping and listening silently to what my body needed: some time to recover from a winter cold.”

Titled Joe Cocker: With a Lot of Help from His Friends, the book is by the rock’n’roll biographer, Mark Bego, and will be the first crack at telling Cocker’s story since his death in 2014, following his rise in the late ‘60s, his internal struggles, and the peace he ultimately found. In the middle of August this year, three legends of the music industry died within 72 hours of each other: founder of A&m Records Jerry Moss; music lawyer Abe Somer; and my father, the “Black Godfather” himself, Clarence Avant. These three men helped define the recording industry of the past six decades, and what’s more, they were inseparable best friends.
Somer, Moss, and Avant met in New York City in the early 1960s, and in the six decades since, never left one another’s side, never once let their “soul contract” expire.

At long last, this week it was revealed that “Moonlighting,” the formative romantic comedy/drama that made Bruce Willis a household name and cemented Cybill Shepherd place in popular culture, will finally be coming to Hulu next month. Glenn Gordon Caron, who created the show, wasn’t sure it was going to happen either.
“I really thought it was going to be one of those things that was lost to the ages,” he told TheWrap in an interview conducted after the announcement was made. “There’s a moment where you go from being in the zeitgeist to becoming a kind of niche and then frankly, getting lost, just have no currency whatsoever because there’ve been so many other things that have been made that have been more interesting, that are newer. And I very much worried about that. That was a concern of mine.”
“Moonlighting” premiered in 1985 on ABC and ran for five seasons.

Any hardcore fan of The Beatles will know that Paul McCartney’s memories didn’t always align with John Lennon’s. John said The Beatles’ “Come Together” was his work. Meanwhile, Paul said he was the one who made it “a genius record.”
Paul McCartney said it was his idea to change the tempo of The Beatles’ ‘Come Together’
During a 2017 interview with The Washington Post, Paul discussed his songwriting partnership with John Lennon. “We had a very easy manner where both of us knew that the other was only in it to help and we were pooling our resources,” he said. “So many times I would help John out with a problem in his song, but conversely, he’d do exactly the same with me. We knew that we would do that, and it was perfectly allowed.
“It’s not a question of pushing,” Paul added. “It’s a question of just being.

Nancy Sinatra covering The Beatles‘ “Something” is probably the single most 1960s thing imaginable. However, Sinatra didn’t finish and release her cover until 2013. Sadly, the “Sugar Town” singer did not have much to say about George Harrison, the sole composer of “Something.”

Paul McCartney was helpless as he watched The Beatles fall apart despite his best efforts to stop the breakup. It is fitting to find Fanny: The Right to Rock broadcast on PBS. The channel thrives on educational material, and director Bobbi Jo Hart’s documentary teaches many lessons. The film chronicles the career, and captures the reunion of Fanny, a group of musicians who changed the dynamics of rock in the 1970s. The lineup was unique, labels and management executives dubbed them the “female Beatles.” They made history as the first all-women rock band to release an LP with a major record label.
Originally called The Svelts and rebranded as Wild Honey, Fanny was formed in the mid-1960s in Sacramento, Calif., by three Filipina American musicians: sisters June and Jean Millington, on guitar and bass, and drummer Brie Darling. All three sang. When Darling had her daughter, Brandi, in 1968, Fanny added drummer Alice de Buhr, and roving keyboardist Nickey Barclay.
As was the fashion of the time, they lived in a band house.

Jimmy Page needed time to find the desire to join a band after Led Zeppelin folded. Drummer John Bonham’s tragic death in 1980 brought a sudden end to the band Page formed in 1968 and guided to worldwide success in the 1970s. The Firm, featuring Bad Company singer Paul Rodgers, was that band. He was the unquestioned boss in Led Zeppelin, but Rodgers told Page to take a back seat on The Firm song “Radioactive.”

In 1969, Merry Clayton stepped into a recording studio in her pajamas and sang an enduring, chill-inducing part on The Rolling Stones’ “Gimme Shelter.” At this point, Clayton had been working as a vocalist for several years. She only grew more successful afterward. Clayton has continued to work as a singer. Here’s what her life has been like in the years since “Gimme Shelter.”

In 1969, The Rolling Stones were recording “Gimme Shelter” in Los Angeles when they decided they wanted a woman to sing on the song. They called Clayton late at night, and she rushed to the studio, four months pregnant and in pajamas and hair rollers.

Bobbi Kelly Ercoline, who, along with her boyfriend (and later husband) Nick became an iconic, if unwitting, symbol of the Woodstock generation when their bedraggled, blanketed and poignant image was featured on the music festival’s 1970 soundtrack album, died Saturday following a lengthy illness.
Her death was announced by husband of 54 years, Nick Ercoline. Neither a specific cause of death or age were disclosed, but Ercoline wrote that his wife was surrounded by family when she passed.
“She lived her life well, and left this world in a much better place,” Nick Ercoline wrote. “If you knew her, you loved her. She lived by her saying, ‘Be kind.'” He added, “She didn’t deserve this past years nightmare, but she isn’t suffering from the physical pain anymore and that brings some comfort to us.”

Billy Preston is amongst an exclusive club of a few musicians who some refer to as the “fifth Beatle.” Billy Preston was a keyboard player who impacted The Beatles more than some may realize. Outside of The Beatles, Preston had an accomplished career, working with many of the greatest artists ever.

Some people are naturally gifted at playing instruments, and Preston realized his gift at a young age. By the age of 10, he was playing the organ for gospel singers like Mahalia Jackson, despite being entirely self-taught. At 11, he appeared on an episode of Nat King Cole’s NBC TV show and sang a Fats Domino song with Cole.
In 1962, Preston joined Little Richard’s band as an organist. While performing in Hamburg, Preston met The Beatles, who had been invited to be Little Richard’s opening act.

When a Beatles song appears in movies and television shows, it usually means that the production paid a good deal of money for the right to use it. The Beatles have maintained such a powerful influence on popular culture that the weighty price tag is typically worth it. Here are seven perfect uses of Beatles songs in movies and television.
Paul McCartney, Ringo Starr, George Harrison and John Lennon | Michael Ochs Archives/Getty Images 1. ‘With a Little Help From My Friends’ in ‘The Wonder Years’
One of the most prominent examples of a Beatles song in popular culture is “With a Little Help From My Friends” in The Wonder Years. The show uses Joe Cocker’s version of the song over the opening credits. According to actor Dan Lauria, Paul McCartney pushed Apple Records to let the show use the song. A lot of TV show theme songs become famous without ever becoming hit singles. However, these classic rock TV theme songs are the exception to the rule. Notably, one of the songs in question was supposed to sound like The Lovin’ Spoonful.
Batman and Robin | Silver Screen Collection / Contributor 4. ‘Welcome Back’ from ‘Welcome Back Kotter’
According to Stereogum, TV producer Alan Sacks created the premise of the show Welcome Back, Kotter. He decided the theme song for the show should sound like The Lovin’ Spoonful, enlisting The Lovin’ Spoonful’s John Sebastian to write a song for the series.
Sebastian wanted to write a song called “Kotter” but this proved impossible, as the only word that rhymes with “Kotter” is “otter.” Sebastian wrote a tune called “Welcome Back” that stuck with the show. In addition, “Welcome Back” became a No. 1 single on the Billboard Hot 100. The track became Sebastian’s...

John Belushi was a force of comedic nature. He made a name for himself in the early 1970s via his raucously hilarious bits in "National Lampoon's Lemmings," an Off-Broadway showcase for up-and-coming talents like Christopher Guest, Chevy Chase, and Tony Hendra. He also joined as a cast member of the "National Lampoon Radio Hour" alongside Gilda Radner, Bill Murray, and Harold Ramis. He slayed in the former when he broke out his hilariously spot-on parody of Joe Cocker, and seemed on the cusp of New York City theater stardom at the same time Lorne Michaels began assembling the cast for a wild swing of a variety show called "NBC's Saturday Night."
Michaels' vision appeared doomed at the outset. How was a show pitched at hip young folks going to find an audience in an 11:30 Pm time slot, i.e. the exact hour most of these people were carousing at bars and parties?...

"Bill & Ted Face the Music" was one of my favorite movies that I saw during lockdown. I saw many better films too, but there was something about the eternal optimism and good nature of William S. Preston, Esq. (Alex Winter) and Theodore Logan (Keanu Reeves) that made them feel like the kind of heroes we needed during a pandemic, one of the weirdest and most uncertain situations many of us have ever experienced.
Stuck at home for far longer than natural, it was comforting to hang out with old screen pals in lieu of our real-life friends. This may be why the era of Covid-19 also saw the unlikely phenomenon of people binge-watching old episodes of "Columbo." Perhaps there isn't too much difference between Bill and Ted and Peter Falk's shambling detective. The movies and the show are set in sunny California; the stakes are low; and the protagonists are unassuming,...

George Harrison had to fight and scratch to get his songs on Beatles albums. Sometimes literally. The man who some called the easy-going Beatle once had a fistfight with John Lennon during the Get Back sessions. John and Paul McCartney allowed George just a few songs on each Fab Four album, but they were often some of the best. Let’s look at 10 of George’s best Beatles songs (sorted chronologically by release date and album track order).
George Harrison | Michael Ochs Archives/Getty Images How many Beatles songs did George Harrison write?
With Paul and John often writing tunes together (at least in the early years), that left George to work on his songs alone. That arrangement held even when the so-called quiet Beatle became so prolific as a songwriter that he said he’d need to make a hundred Beatles albums to release the songs he wrote in one year.

The Beatles are the most covered band ever. While most of these covers struggle to reach the heights of the original, some are just as good as the original, and a few that surpass them. The Beatles have hundreds of classic songs to cover, and a few artists put their spin on them, which made the tracks even better.
The Beatles | Bettmann / Contributor Here are 5 covers of Beatles songs that are better than the original 1. ‘Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band’ — Jimi Hendrix
In an interview with Stephen Colbert, Paul McCartney recalled seeing Jimi Hendrix perform this cover and called it one of the “great honors of my career.” Hendrix was a wizard on the guitar, and it shows in his cover of this Beatles track. While his vocal performance is more underplayed than John Lennon’s, his vocals and instrumentals give this song a grittier tone than before.

A short film from the team that brought us the viral video starring Jamie Costa in a spot-on impersonation of Robin Williams has a new short out dramatizing a scene between Jack Nicholson and John Belushi during the making of the 1978 western Goin’ South.
The short–The Cowboy and the Samurai, in reference to Nicholson’s character in Goin’ South and Belushi’s famous samurai character on Saturday Night Live–is “based on a true story…kind of.” As per the official synopsis: “In 1978, world renowned movie star, Jack Nicholson, made his feature directorial debut, a western called Goin’ South. Against the advice of his producers, he cast up and coming comedian, John Belushi.” Costa plays Nicholson, while Sandy Danto plays Belushi.

George Harrison was the youngest member of The Beatles and was dubbed the quiet one. Though a bit of a misnomer (Tom Petty said he wouldn’t shut up), George often let his music do the talking. He came into his own as a songwriter with the Fab Four and continued the trend in his solo career. Here are 10 essential George Harrison songs to listen to on his Feb. 25 birthday (presented in no particular order).
George Harrison | Sonia Moskowitz/Images/Getty Images 1. ‘Taxman’
George wrote the lead song from perhaps the best Beatles album with hardly any help. John Lennon refused to help George write “Taxman,” and that might have been a good thing.
The barbed guitar line, simple yet infectious melodies, and memorable lyrics culminated in his peak Beatles moment to that point. It’s not difficult to conceive George receiving a confidence boost knowing he penned a stellar song without any assistance.

The Beatles are the most covered band of all time, and their most covered song is “Yesterday,” written by Paul McCartney. The track has been covered thousands of times, with a few being covered by legendary artists such as Frank Sinatra and Elvis Presley. McCartney was curious to know what some of these “Yesterday” covers sounded like, so he listened to the “top 10.”

Unlike other former leaders of the Free World, President Barack Obama is known for keeping his finger on the pulse of pop culture. In addition to sharing his Favorite Books of 2022, Obama is ready to release a list of his Favorite Movies of 2022, including Top Gun: Maverick, The Woman King, Everything Everywhere All At Once, Emily the Criminal, and more. Obama posted the complete list to Instagram on Friday, cementing his reputation as a man of taste.
Earlier this year, Obama shared a Spotify playlist link presenting his favorite Summer Jams of 2022. Included on the list were Beyoncé, Prince, Al Green, Miles Davis, Fatboy Slim, Joe Cocker, Burna Boy, Kendrick Lamar, Tems, and one of my favorites, the British indie rock band Wet Leg. The mix will bring heat to any pool party full of people looking to get their drink on while playing Beach Blanket Bingo.

Samrock died Saturday night of pancreatic cancer at his home in Encino, his wife of 44 years, Carol Andelman Samrock, announced.
Samrock was vice president of national publicity at Warner Bros. Pictures in Burbank under co-chairmen Bob Daly and Terry Semel. He joined the company in 1982 as West Coast publicity director and built and managed a 16-member staff responsible for publicity duties on some 30 films in production or release annually.
Samrock moved to Warner Home Video in 1997 as a consultant to help then-president Warren Lieberfarb introduce the new format.

A year later, he launched Carl Samrock Public Relations, a boutique firm that focused on publicity and promotion campaigns for DVD and Blu-ray releases. For the next nearly two decades,...

Though vocal groups are a longstanding tradition in country music, the quartet Little Big Town have been compared to Fleetwood Mac just as often as they’ve been compared to the Oak Ridge Boys. That’s due in part to their mix of male and female voices, as well as the way they’ve largely favored folk-rock arrangements over honky-tonk and country shuffles.

Sean Kelly, one of the earliest and most brazen National Lampoon writers whose lyrics for the influential 1973 Off Broadway revue National Lampoon’s Lemmings helped launch the careers of John Belushi, Christopher Guest and Chevy Chase, died July 11 in New York City of heart and renal failure. He was 81.
His death was announced by wife Patricia Todd to The New York Times.
A New York Drama Desk Award winner for Most Promising Lyricist following the 1973 Off Broadway debut of Lemmings, Kelly, at the time, specialized in song parodies, a skill that would make a considerable contribution to the revue’s notorious parody of Woodstock. The Lemmings satire of the festival featured such soon-to-be-stars as Chase and Guest impersonating, among others, John Denver and Bob Dylan (respectively).
Most famously, Lemmings’ Woodstock musical scenes included Belushi’s spot-on imitation of Joe Cocker, a savage impersonation the comic would take to Saturday Night Live...

The recent round of reboots hasn’t set the world on fire when it comes to winning accolades. But that changed with ABC’s “The Wonder Years,” which premiered last September. A big reason is it’s a complete reimagining. Instead of being a coming-of-age memory comedy about a young boy growing up in the late 1960s in a middle-class White family, the new version revolves around a Black family living in that pivotal decade in Montgomery, Alabama as seen through the eyes of a 12-year-old.
The reboot has already followed in the original’s footsteps earning a prestigious Peabody Award in June for “its willful depiction of Black Joy.” The initial version picked up the award in 1989 for “pushing boundaries of the sitcom format and using new modes of storytelling.” So will Emmys be far behind for freshman series starring Elisha “Ej” Williams as 12-year-old Dean Williams and Dull...

From the moment their first shows were advertised, Fanny was promoted as an all-girl band, but the label wears thin in director Bobbie Jo Hart’s Fanny: The Right to Rock. Each member says it themselves in the feature documentary, and tried telling record companies there were far more interesting things to say about them beyond the mystery of their gender. They broke through, but only barely, because sexism in rock and roll was so deeply ingrained psychologically, not even the promotion departments could think of anything else to say.
This is probably why Alice de Buhr remarks, at one point in the film, that every kick on her bass drum was a kick in a crotch. Fanny was committed to the music. The group’s members included bassist Jean Millington, guitarists June Millington and Patti Quatro, keyboardist Nickey Barclay, and drummers de Buhr and Brie Darling. Their sound was...

“That’s the way things could be, back in the day,” says Ben Fong-Torres, explaining how he grabbed Jim Morrison for what turned out to be the Doors frontman’s last-ever interview after bumping into him at a friend’s apartment in the summer of 1971.
Fong-Torres, one of Rolling Stone’s first star writers, gets his own spotlight in the new Netflix documentary Like a Rolling Stone: The Life and Times of Ben Fong-Torres. And on our Rolling Stone Music Now podcast, he reminisced about his encounters with Bob Dylan,...
