Since 2017, AT&T and the Tribeca Festival have provided financing and support to filmmakers from underrepresented backgrounds through the Untold Stories program, with the winner receiving $1 million, as well as mentorship and guidance, to turn their pitch into a feature film that gets a guaranteed screening at the following year’s Tribeca Festival.
But this year, the 2022 winners, So Young Shelly Yo and Guo Guo, are taking their victory lap even further, becoming the first Untold Stories winners to have their movie, Smoking Tigers, in the festival’s U.S. narrative competition.
“It’s in competition completely on its own merits,” Tribeca Festival director and vp, programming Cara Cusumano tells The Hollywood Reporter of Smoking Tigers‘ breakthrough competition placement. “It was just really an exciting discovery for the team. I think the world that’s evoked and the characters feel extremely lived-in and there was an authenticity to it that really spoke to us all.

In a deal negotiated by Leslie Cohen, senior vice president of acquisitions for HBO Max, the streaming platform has joined Warner Bros. Discovery OneFifty to acquire the poignant Vee Bravo documentary, “Primera,” a gripping look into the Chilean protests that proved a turning point in the fight against Pinochet-era induced economic strife.
Immersive and raw, the film taps into the global collective’s urge toward positive change, following the heartbeat of this pivotal moment as local activists and citizens strive to upend a stagnant system and rewrite their constitution.
“How can we trust the definition of freedom in a constitution that was written at a time when the entire labor force was kept through violence?” Bravo related. “The past is important, it informs how we move in the present. But it doesn’t mean that we need to be archaic in our approach in coming up with solutions for the future.

Exclusive: The last big piece of the Todd-Soundelux bankruptcy has fallen into place with the sale of the company’s massive sound effects library, which has been purchased at auction by Sounddogs.com for $600,000. The library contains millions of sound effects from thousands of films the company worked on over the past 30 years, including films that won more than 20 Oscars for best sound effects. Soundelux, which for many years was one of Hollywood’s leading postproduction facilities, declared bankruptcy in May.
Now that the Soundelux library has been sold, there’s not much left of the company, which only recently employed more than 200 people. “With the sale of the library, there’s very little remaining of the company and we’re moving forward with the liquidation,” said Leslie Cohen, the company’s bankruptcy attorney.

Todd-Soundelux, which closed its postproduction facilities in Hollywood and Santa Monica and filed for bankruptcy protection two weeks ago, is on the selling block. The company for many years had been Hollywood’s leading independent provider of postproduction sound services but has been hit hard by runaway production and shifting business patterns. “Todd is seeking buyers for the business as a whole or for any of its individual business segments, each of which are continuing to operate under chapter 11,” the company said. Attorney Leslie Cohen, who is handling Todd-Soundelux’s bankruptcy, said this is a “sale of the business and not a liquidating sale of equipment.” She added that the “downsizing accomplished by cost cutting and closure” of the La-area facilities “has created a stronger enterprise which should generate interest from potential buyers.”...

2Nd Update, 3:29 Pm: Today’s closures of Soundelux’s facilities in Hollywood and Santa Monica have resulted in layoffs of about 30 of the historic postproduction sound studio’s 200 employees, said Leslie Cohen, the company’s bankruptcy attorney. “There are no further imminent layoffs expected at this time,” she said, noting that the company’s Burbank facilities remain open for business. “The company is still in business and intends to stay in business, and will satisfy all of its commitments to its customers, pay its creditors, and will sell the business as a going concern. The bank is consenting to the company’s further operations and restructuring efforts.” Update, 11:37 Am: Soundelux has released a statement today saying it is filing for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection “to streamline the company’s cost structure while preparing the company for sale. The company will continue to operate the business throughout the restructuring process...
