Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) finally got the speakership early Saturday morning, but not before a weeklong slog that saw flared tempers, animated huddles and, in the penultimate drama before his moment of victory, a near-brawl.
Inside the chamber, many reporters in the press gallery had risen from their seats once McCarthy walked down the center aisle to converse with Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-fl), the lone holdout he needed to obtain a majority, as McCarthy’s allies sat and crouched down to plead with the dissident. “On your knees,” one Democrat said loudly, as other lawmakers began to fix their gaze on what was unfolding.
Soon voices were raised. Gaetz pointed his finger at McCarthy, and McCarthy’s face was one of utter frustration. Rep. Mike Rogers (R-al) walked over and, in a moment that will forever live in the annals of House speaker votes, began to lunge at Gaetz before being restrained by Rep.

“We still have absolutely no idea how this will end,” CNN’s Jake Tapper declared Tuesday as the House of Representatives appeared to come up short for the third time to vote in a Speaker.
Suffering humiliation on humiliation, GOP House Leader Kevin McCarthy saw 20 far-right members of his fractious caucus put their third-ballot support behind another top Republican. With business for the new 118th Congress frozen until a Speaker is selected, McCarthy had 202 votes to 212 for House Democrats caucus chair Rep. Hakeem Jeffries and 20 votes to Republican Rep. Jim Jordan – the latter a top McCarthy ally who has urged members to vote for the California Republican.

When filmmaker Joyce Chopra was coming of age in post-World War II New York, she ran into a serious problem: She’d never seen a film directed by a woman. Even the film history books she read didn’t make mention of what Chopra herself would eventually become: a “lady director.”
After more than 50 years in the business, Chopra is reclaiming that eye-rolling moniker for her first memoir, “Lady Director, Adventures in Hollywood, Television and Beyond,” an insightful, emotional, and often quite dishy rollercoaster ride through her life and career. At 86, Chopra is as curious, clever, and damn fun to talk to as ever, all of which is reflected in her eye-opening memoir.
Out November 22 from City Lights Publishers, “Lady Director” follows Chopra through her early, revelatory documentary career, the making of her Sundance winner “Smooth Talk,” the incredible disappointments that followed, and her eventual move into television, where she...

Amazon has resumed political contributions to lawmakers who voted to object to the 2020 electoral vote count on January 6th, 2021, the day that Donald Trump supporters attacked the U.S. Capitol in an effort to block the results that would make Joe Biden the winner of the presidency.
Amazon’s contributions, first reported by the website Popular Information, were to nine lawmakers, all of whom voted against the certification of electoral votes in one or more states.
In the aftermath of January 6, Amazon announced that its corporate Pac would pause contributions and said that they intended “to discuss our concerns directly with those Members we have previously supported and will evaluate their responses as we consider future Pac contributions.” Amazon called the objections to Biden’s electoral certification an “unacceptable attempt to undermine a legitimate democratic process.”

Michael Mann’s films turn on the fulcrum of historical upheaval. Sometimes that upheaval is imminent; sometimes it has already happened. In either case his characters are precision-tuned to reflect it, existing within an exact moment in time that violently disrupts their worldview and forces them to reconsider their very methods of being. Personal ideals are often overshadowed by realpolitik—cold, clinical systems that rely on dehumanization to function.
The Last of the Mohicans, adapted from James Fenimore Cooper’s 1826 novel of the same name, stands among the purest distillations of Mann’s narrative rigor. Though an aesthetic departure—his signature glittering skylines and rain-slicked city streets are replaced with the verdant wilderness of colonial Albany—the film is every bit as concerned, if not more so, with the cosmic ebb and flow of change, the individuals swept up in it. Its fluctuating scope is laid bare in its two opening intertitles: “1757. The American colonies.

On a snowy afternoon in 1958, Annette Funicello, Tommy Cole, and several other The Mickey Mouse Club members were on an East Coast bus tour when they gave one unsuspecting family a huge surprise. "The new Annette series was coming on the air and we wanted to see it," Tommy exclusively recalls to Closer Weekly of the sitcom in which Annette played a rural girl who moves in with rich relatives. "Our bus driver went up to a house that had bikes on the porch — we knew there were kids. He knocked and said, 'I have some of the original Mouseketeers on my bus — can we come in and watch Annette with you?' And they went, 'Oh my!'" By the third season of The Mickey Mouse Club, Annette had become the most beloved girl in America. The Mickey Mouse Club cast. In case you were wondering, that bizarre Jim Carrey interview from a few weeks back wasn’t an anomaly. The man who brought us Ace Ventura and the Mask still believes that none of us exist and nothing matters, though he does seem to take it all in stride during his appearance on “Norm Macdonald Live.”
After joking about the fact that “every once in a while, somebody you really admire hates your guts,” Carrey reveals two people who weren’t fans of him: Chuck Jones and Tommy Lee Jones.

There's good news, bad news and weird news today out of Hollywood.
Let's start with the bad news because it's hard to fathom why more wasn't done to lure viewers to this now-canceled series.
In case you didn't know, Sweet/Vicious aired on MTV and followed the story of two "vigilantes," Jules and Ophelia, who fought back against injustice on their college campus.
A specific type of injustice. The type that happens to girls and isn't always followed up by campus authorities because the boys are excellent sportsmen, the girls were wearing the wrong outfits or it might be too hard to prove.
You know what I'm talking about. Sexual assault. That dirty little secret that gets swept under the rug far too often and for too many different reasons.
Jules and Ophelia made it their mission to get justice for those who suffered, and they weren't beyond suffering themselves.

[Editor’s note: The following review contains spoilers for the “The Leftovers” Season 3, Episode 2, “Don’t Be Ridiculous.”]
Immediate Reaction:
Another episode of “The Leftovers,” another mind-blowing last-second twist. After an episode spent entirely with Nora Durst (Carrie Coon), we took a trip to the Outback in the final minutes and watched a police officer named Kevin get drugged, tied up, and drowned by a group of women on horseback who are somehow connected to Kevin Sr. (Scott Glenn).
Now, it appears as clear as anything in “The Leftovers” can be that this was a case of mistaken identity: The women, led by the tremendously talented Lindsay Duncan, thought Australian Kevin was American Kevin (Justin Theroux). They believed he would rise from the dead, as Kevin has, but why they wanted him to briefly die and how they found out about him in the first place remain mysteries. Does Kevin Sr. know them? Did he have a copy of Matt’s book? Is this even the present day,...

With just over thirty years worth of screen time, there are plenty of memorable moments in Grange Hill. From its inception in February 1978 the programme proved both entertaining and controversial. As with their Convergence section, the New York Film Festival offers an expanded view of the current cinema with yet another installment in their Projections series, a showcase of recent developments in and classic examples of experimental work from around the globe. These are hard to pin down as fitting particular types, and the only qualifier I can give is that whatever I manage to see from Projections stands as some of the most fascinating, enriching work I encounter at Nyff every given year.

You know, the usual. She laughed her way up and down the sand in a black-and-brown Acacia two-piece, which showed off what appears to be a new tattoo on her hip that reads, "Just Breathe." Throughout the week, the actress returned to the beach, where she flaunted her killer physique in a barely there orange bikini, a black-and-white bathing suit with cool cutouts, and a white striped two-piece. Keep scrolling to see more pictures of the star, and then check out some sexy snaps...

I happily went to the Lower East Side to visit with Priska Juschka and see her new collaboration / business, Lichtundfire. The opening exhibition is entitled Visceral Velocity or the Emotional Speed of Things and runs from November 4th through December 20th, 2015.
Lichtundfire has all the earmarks of a new business settling in, but not Priska herself. A seasoned art dealer and curator within the primary and secondary market for over twenty years, Juschka has, with a new team, envisioned something different. The exhibition currently on view is a mix of known artists and new works she found compelling and wanted to present. At the preview, there was a steady stream of people and groups coming in and out wishing her well and saying hello ,which adds to the happy impression of a new environment.
I was particularly interested in a new artist she was working with, Jonathan Peyser, who is...

HBO's "The Leftovers" just concluded an incredible second season. (Here's my review of the finale.) As a bookend to the long and candid conversation we had two months ago, I spoke with the series' co-creator Damon Lindelof about many of the big decisions going into the finale, about all the hard work and tough choices required for a season this good, and his thoughts about the show's precarious future, coming up just as soon as a temple closes on Christmas... Let's start with a meta question: why are we doing this interview? A year ago, you didn't want to do any post-mortems. You wanted to let the show speak for itself. You did a bunch at the start of this season, you talked to Mo Ryan last week, and are doing a few like this for the finale. Why did you decide to be a little bit more out there this year?...

A review of tonight's "The Leftovers" coming up just as soon as I ask you something stupid... "Have you ever heard of someone being responsible for someone's Departure?" -Nora When "The Leftovers" replaced its original theme song this season with Iris DeMent's "Let the Mystery Be," it was the show's most explicit statement yet not to expect any kind of concrete explanations for the Sudden Departure. At the same time, season 2 opened with plenty of new mysteries about life in and around Jarden, with images like Jerry slaughtering a goat in the diner, or the woman posing for photos in her wedding gown, or Erika digging up the box with the bird all raising questions we probably shouldn't have expected the show to answer. Yet it has, to varying degrees. Two weeks ago, Patti told Kevin that Evie and her friends Departed, though there remains the very large question...

A review of tonight's "The Leftovers" coming up just as soon as I email my manuscript to myself... "They won't jump out of the way." -Laurie After two episodes set largely in Jarden, "The Leftovers" returns to the Tri-State area(*), and to the most divisive of the many divisive elements of season 1, with Laurie and Tommy taking on the Guilty Remnant in "Off Ramp." (*) No, not that Tri-State area, even if Damon Lindelof wrote a "Lost"-themed "Phineas & Ferb" episode. When Laurie's potential book publisher asks her to explain exactly what the Remnant believes and why, he's acting as a stand-in for the many "Leftovers" viewers who didn't understand and/or like what all those chain-smoking ghouls in white jumpsuits were up to last season. And with Laurie finally able to speak — she speaks so much in this episode that you can feel all those words relieved to get out...

Heroes Reborn, Season 1, Episode 3, “Under the Mask”
Written by Seamus Kevin Fahey
Directed by Greg Beeman
Airs on Thursdays at 8 pm (Et) on NBC
Family is as important to the universe of Heroes as Primatech or people inexplicably coming back to life. The Petrellis and the Nakamuras and the Bennets and the Sureshs had grand lineages that went into controlling the evos, exploiting them, and understanding them. This focus grounds the series: We all have family and understand the various pains and strains that those relationships and exceptions generate in life. This also theoretically gives the show ample opportunity to mine and explore new conflicts. But as was seen ten or so years ago, only so many times can Heroes have Peter and Nathan stand at opposite ends of a crisis only to come together at the end, with one of them scarifying themselves, before the audience gets actively angry at the show.

Thursday’s episode of Heroes Reborn can best be summed up by Ghost‘s Oda Mae Brown: “Molly, you in danger, girl.”
Even though the hour was certainly harrowing for Miko, Tommy and the rest of the Evos, none of them were kidnapped, tranquilized on a flight to Colorado or had wires inserted into their skull so that a corrupt corporation could use their powers for evil. So, yeah, Molly Walker wins this round.
But before I get ahead of myself, let’s break down the details of “Under the Mask”:

Yes, it's really been 60 years since Mickey Mouse Club premiered on ABC. To cap off the D23 Expo in Anaheim, Calif., Sunday, a few original Mouseketeers—including Sherry Alberoni, Sharon Baird, Bobby Burgess, Tommy Cole, Darlene Gillespie, Cubby O'Brien and Doreen Tracey—reunited on stage to reminisce with Lorraine Santoli, author of The Official Mickey Mouse Club Book. "The Mickey Mouse Club was a television phenomenon," Santoli said of the beloved and family friendly variety series, which aired intermittently on ABC and Disney Chanel from 1955 to 1996, "and it's something that fans still love 60 years later." (It's no coincidence that Disneyland is in the midst...

As first reported by The Wrap, Ryan Gosling is sealing the deal to star in Disney's supernatural family film "The Haunted Mansion," directed and produced by Mexican genre movie-maker Guillermo del Toro. Based on the kooky, creepy Disneyland ride, the film has been in the works since del Toro unveiled the project at Comic-Con 2010. But del Toro insists this is not a comedy: "If you take the children, they will scream." D.V. It's been a tough year for some kids on reality shows.
From Here Comes Honey Boo Boo to Friday Night Tykes to the kids of Real Housewives with parents getting divorced or going to jail, it could be hard to understand why a parent would want to broadcast their child’s development for all the world to see -- even if they’re able to pay for college down the road with talent fees.
Child advocates who we spoke to said that there aren't enough regulations, especially for shows shot outside California, to protect kids from being overworked and exploited. Unlike the push for a "no kids" policy in paparazzi photos -- which was supported by Kristen Bell and other celebrity parents -- there’s been no coordinated campaign focused on kids on reality shows.
