“Severance,” “Everything Everywhere All at Once” and “Women Talking” took home top prizes at the Writers Guild of America Awards, Hollywood’s final major awards ceremony before next week’s 95th Oscars.
But the bigger message that emerged from the night was how the industry’s scribe tribe is engaged and ready to back their guild in the upcoming contract talks for a new master film and TV contract.
“Welcome to the Writers Guild Awards and strike authorization vote,” said host Janelle James, star of “Abbott Elementary,” at the start of the Los Angeles ceremony, held at the Fairmont Century Plaza hotel. Comedian Michelle Buteau led the New York festivities, which ran concurrently at New York’s Edison Ballroom.
Buteau kicked off New York’s night with a joke that broke the ice regarding the WGA’s looming contract negotiations: “I hope everyone enjoyed the cocktail hour. That was the studios’ counteroffer to streaming residuals.

Fans of the ‘90s aesthetic have a special appreciation for the television that came out of the era, especially classic sitcoms including “The Nanny,” which is now officially streaming on HBO Max. Kim Coles is one of those individuals that started out in the 90s and was insanely popular for a while since she took on a number of roles that stood her up next to known individuals that helped to showcase just how funny and outgoing she could be. After the decade was a thing of the past however it’s fair to say that while her career still kept going, her level of popularity waned just as much as anyone’s, and more than that of others in some cases. While she’s still a very funny and very capable woman it’s easy

“Living Single” star Erika Alexander has joined the chorus of people calling out “Friends” star David Schwimmer for his suggestion that a “Friends” reboot should feature an “all-black” or “all-Asian” cast.
“r u seriously telling me you’ve never heard of #LivingSingle? We invented the template! Yr welcome bro,” Alexander wrote in a tweet on Wednesday.
Her comments came after Schwimmer acknowledged in an interview with The Guardian that “Friends” wasn’t the most progressive show on race when it aired on NBC nearly three decades ago, and that its all-white cast looks even starker in a modern-day context. The actor suggested in the interview that a potential reboot of the show center on a non-white cast.

The problem, as Alexander and many others have pointed out, is that “Living Single” premiered a year before “Friends” and featured an all-black cast.

Every week, IndieWire asks a select handful of TV critics two questions and publishes the results on Tuesday. (The answer to the second, “What is the best show currently on TV?” can be found at the end of this post.)
This week’s question: In light of the recent “Roseanne” revival news, which sitcom would you like to see a revival of? (Let’s assume this is feasible from a network, talent, production, etc. standpoint.)
Liz Shannon Miller (@lizlet), IndieWire
So many great sitcoms are personality driven, which makes it hard to remember great premises worth reviving. (And also, when I think about some of my ‘90s favorites, like “Step by Step” or “Friends,” it’s like… Oh, maybe there’s nothing new under the sun.)
But, beyond my eternal wish that someone would remake “Almost Human” as an adorable rom-com about Karl Urban and Robot Michael Ealy falling in...

In the summer of 1989, while Spike Lee's "Do the Right Thing" was sounding a thunderclap in cinemas, a troupe of largely black actors and comedians came together on a Fox sound stage in Century City to produce a sketch comedy show aimed at servicing a minority point of view that had been underrepresented by the medium. With producer Keenen Ivory Wayans at the helm, fresh off the success of his 1988 Blaxploitation parody film "I'm Gonna Git You Sucka," eight individuals — a then-unknown Jim Carrey along with Kelly Coffield, Kim Coles, Tommy Davidson, David Alan Grier, T'Keyah "Crystal" Keymáh and Wayans' siblings Damon and Kim — filmed the first episodes of "In Living Color." The show debuted on April 15, 1990, and 25 years later, Damon Wayans can't help but remember first and foremost that he had hair back then. "I remember the pain of getting fired from 'Saturday Night Live' and feeling that I needed redemption,...

Damon Wayans was the second major cast member from "In Living Color" to leave the show, after Kim Coles. He departed following the third season to pursue a big screen career, starring in films like "The Last Boy Scout," "Blankman" and "Major Payne." But during his time with the show, he left an unmistakable signature that can be felt across a number of colorful characters. Think of "In Living Color" and you're bound to have the image of an angry, put-upon clown flash through your head (Homey D. Clown), or perhaps a pair of flamboyant critics giving the weekend's latest release "two snaps up" ("Men On…"). These were some of Wayans' trademark sketches, coming at a time when, as he says in our extended feature on the series' 25th anniversary, he was eager for redemption after being fired from "Saturday Night Live." Here are the beginnings and inspirations for those sketches and more,...

I’ve been trying to figure out a way to discuss last Sunday’s Game of Thrones but end up stuck trying to find a way to word it without being spoilery.
