Made only five films before returning to her first love, the
theatre.
Appeared in scores of Broadway plays as sweet, girl-next-door types,
most notably opposite Leslie Howard and Humphrey Bogart in "The
Petrified Forest".
Trained in dance, she started as a chorus girl.
Started out in the obscure chorus ranks as a dancer before moving to
leading Broadway status.
Due to an absentee father and her mother's death when she was twelve, she was brought up by two aunts in impoverished circumstances.
