Reading’s unceremonious sacking of Brian McDermott on Monday has been met with derision from across the footballing world, as figures from the game, journalists and fans alike bemoan another potentially short-sighted decision to let go of a good manager in an attempt to stave off relegation late in the day. It’s an increasingly common occurrence in the Premier League – but does it ever actually pay off?
The lack of sentiment shown by Reading majority shareholder Anton Zingarevich was apparent. In his time in charge of Reading since the end of 2009, McDermott had taken a struggling Championship side and over-achieved, steadying the ship before taking them back into the top flight, where they have fought a brave battle against relegation despite having the weakest squad in the Premier League. But that wasn’t enough for Zingarevich, though, and the axe fell on McDermott with just nine games remaining this season.

Wolverhampton Wanderers have sacked managed Stale Solbakken after just six months at the helm following a series of bad results at the Molineux.
Wolves were surprisingly knocked out of the Fa Cup 3rd Round yesterday by conference side Luton, and this proved to be the last straw for the impatient board, who sacked him just hours after the embarrassment.
Wolves aren’t doing much better in the Championship, either. Solbakken only won 11 of his 30 games in charge, losing 15 and drawing 4. That leaves the side 18th in the league, hovering just 6 points above the relegation zone.
Wolves were relegated from the Premier League only last season and were one of the favourites for promotion this season, but the club have gone through two managers since then, after Terry Connor replaced sacked Mick McCarthy on an interim basis before Solbakken took charge.

Wigan go into today’s game at the Dw Stadium against already relegated Wolves knowing that they are already safe for another season. Kick-off time is at 3pm and the match is not televised live anywhere in the UK.
Here’s the team news ahead of the game…
David Jones is Wigan’s only fitness concern ahead of the clash against the midfielder’s former employers. Boss Roberto Martinez said in the pre-match press conference that the player had “a couple of niggles” that needed nursing through and with Wigan not needing to win the game, he will not be risked.
Otherwise Martinez has a full squad to choose from.
For Wolves interim boss Terry Connor’s last game in charge before Stale Solbakken takes over next season, there are injury doubts over defender Christophe Berra and winger Michael Kightly. Both will be assessed late after they had to be...

Team news ahead of already relegated Wolves against in-form Everton at the Molineux. The Premier League match has a 2pm kick-off time and won’t be screened live anywhere in the UK.
Wolves interim boss Terry Connor will give a late fitness test to on-loan Spurs defender Sebastien Bassong. He missed the incredible 4-4 draw against Swansea last weekend with a hamstring problem and is a doubt for today’s game.
Winger Matt Jarvis has a tight groin injury stemming from that Swansea game but is optimistic that he will be able to play today.
Keeper Wayne Hennessey (knee), defender Jody Craddock (hip) and midfielder Jamie O’Hara (groin) are all sidelined.
For Everton, left-back Leighton Baines (hamstring) will be missing today but will hope to play in the last game of the season against Newcastle next week to prove his fitness to new England boss Roy Hodgson.

Ever since Mick McCarthy was sacked, relegation has been inevitable for Wolverhampton Wanderers. The decision to dispense with the former Republic of Ireland manager was not in itself the axe that killed off Wolves survival hopes, but the calamity in appointing a successor meant the boys in gold never stood a chance.
Rather than receive a bump from a new manager with fresh ideas, the internal promotion of the affable Terry Connor brought with it a ‘meh’, and it is no surprise that results continued to go downhill. Yet Saturday’s 4-4 draw at Swansea showed there is still fight in this team as well as quality, although the 4-4 score line gives quick indication of their strengths and weaknesses.
First, let’s look at the finances. Relegation from the Premiership instantly means a shrinking of budgets, but Wolves are a well run club. TV money has been invested in...

Swansea will look to add to their ambition of a top 10 finish in the Premier League as they host already relegated Wolves at the Liberty Stadium this afternoon.
Whilst the Midlands club suffered the fate of relegation at the hands of title contenders Manchester City last weekend, Terry Connor has insisted that his team will not simply roll over for their opponents in the final three games of the season.
Swansea on the other hand are near enough mathematically safe from relegation in their maiden season in the Premier League and boss Brendan Rodgers will be looking for his players to finish the season on a high.
One player who will be familiar with both teams today is Wolves goalkeeper Dorus de Vries. De Vries left the Swans at the start of the season on a free transfer but has yet to really challenge Wayne Hennessey for the number 1 jersey,...

Team news ahead of Wolves vs Arsenal, a crucial game tonight for both ends of the Premier League table. Arsenal are on the hunt for fourth place whilst Wolves are scrapping for their lives at the foot of the table.
Kick-off is at 7.45pm at the Molineux.
Jamie O’Hara (groin), Stephen Hunt (groin) and Jody Craddock (hamstring) are all unavailable for tonight’s game.
Wolves caretaker boss Terry Connor also needs to decide whether to regular captain Roger Johnson to the side. The controversial defender was dropped to the bench for the game against Stoke a week after the on-field disagreement between he and Wayne Hennessey.
For Arsenal, defender Laurent Koscielny sits out after picking up his 10th yellow card of the season in the win over Manchester City on Sunday. He will sit out two games for the Gunners.

Wolves and Bolton go into this crucial six-pointer with differing recent fortunes in their fight for Premier League survival.
Terry Connor’s side haven’t won in six and are on a run of four straight league defeats, whereas the Lancashire outfit come into the game on the back of two vital victories against Qpr and Blackburn.
On that basis this must surely be considered a must win game for Wolves who are four points adrift of their opponents and the safety of 17th place and remain rooted to the foot of the table.
Bolton on the other hand will be looking to put more distance between themselves and the sides below them in the battle to remain in the top flight. Both Qpr and Wigan face tough fixtures against Arsenal and Stoke respectively, although the two struggling sides both play at home this weekend.

On a day where football was put into perspective by the tragic events of yesterday’s tie between Tottenham and Bolton, Manchester United held back nothing as they thrashed Wolves 5-0. Fabrice Muamba was announced to be in ‘critical condition’ after collapsing in yesterday’s Fa Cup, and this was honoured by both sets of players and supporters with a minute’s applause prior to kick off. Two goals from Javier Hernandez and one apiece for Danny Welbeck, Antonio Valencia and Jonny Evans helped United to victory.
Neither Manchester United or Wolves can be completely satisfied with their respective seasons so far. Naturally Sir Alex Ferguson can be happier – his side are looking strong in the title challenge, but then they usually are there or thereabouts and now they’ve crashed out of the Europa League, the poor man’s Champion’s League (‘poor’ might be a bit of an...

Wolves caretaker boss Terry Connor has no fresh injury concerns ahead of today’s match but is still missing Karl Henry who is battling to overcome his hamstring injury. He hopes to return for the match on March 24th at Norwich.
Connor has a big decision to make over captain Roger Johnson who was dropped from the starting line-up over disciplinary problems in the past few weeks that have coincided with the club leaking nine goals in just three games.
For Sir Alex Ferguson’s Manchester United, Wayne Rooney should start as he shrugs off the knock he took during Thursday night’s Europa League defeat in Spain. He played the full 90 minutes of the match,...

Newcastle United welcome Wolverhampton Wanderers to St. James’ Park this afternoon, the visitors who have a new manager in Terry Connor. The former assistant to axed Mick McCarthy was given the reigns yesterday until the end of the season after a flurry of candidates turned down the job at the Molineux in the last fortnight. He has 13 games remaining to keep Wolves in the division, with a tough visit to the North East today to start his gauntlet.
Meanwhile Newcastle will be hoping to take three points today that could send them back into fourth by end of play today depending on struggling Chelsea’s result against Bolton at Stamford Bridge.
After the 5-0 thrashing at White Hart Lane, Newcastle boss Alan Pardew will be delighted to welcome back key central midfield pairing Cheick Tiote and Yohan Cabaye. Tiote has missed the last seven matches because of Ivory Coast’s African Cup of Nations campaign,...

Breaking news coming in from the Molineux….
Wolverhampton Wanderers have hired Terry Connor as manager until the end of the season.
Connor, who served as assistant manager to axed boss Mick McCarthy has been tasked with the job of keeping Wolves in England’s top division with a tricky thirteen games remaining of the season. The club currently lie 17th in the table, in the relegation zone on goal difference.
Connor has been given the job after the Wolves owners had difficulty finding a replacement for McCarthy elsewhere. As we reported just hours ago, they had offered the job to former Charlton and West Ham boss Alan Curbishley twice, current Reading boss Brian McDermott and also former Everton and Rangers manager Walter Smith but none of them accepted the job. They also interviewed a whole host of other candidates including Steve Bruce (who was so desperate for the job he...

Updated: Wolves have announced the appointment of Terry Connor as manager until the end of the season. Our report Here.
Wolves will turn to former boss Dave Jones to end their two week nightmare search for a new manager.
Jones previously managed the club for three years between 2001-2004 and helped the club win promotion to the Premier League in 2003 before being seeing Wolves relegated 12 months later. He has been out of work since leaving Cardiff City last summer and the Wolves owners are believed to have put an Sos call out to him in the last few days, possibly reminded that Jones has said he has “unfinished business” at Molineux.
After Mick McCarthy was sacked on Monday 13th February, Wolves owners have interviewed almost a dozen candidates for the position but despite offers being put out to managers in and out of work, nobody seems to want the job...

Breaking news coming in from Talksport, Wolves manager Mick McCarthy has been sacked this morning.
The 53 year old has lost his job just one day after an embarrassing 5-1 home defeat to heated rivals West Brom Albion in the Black Country derby on Sunday.
At the final whistle yesterday the Molineux crowd cried out thunderous boo’s for their side’s hapless display in front of a nationwide television audience on Sky Sports and a protest by hundreds of protestors at the Billy Wright statue called for the board to sack the manager.
Last night the future of McCarthy looked bleak after a run of just one win in their last 13 matches and the sword has fallen on him today, ending his five and a half year stint as Wolves boss.
The board has now released a statement;
“The board took the difficult decision after a run of form which...
