For fans of the long-running comic book series Hellblazer, the continued changes being made for the TV adaptation haven’t exactly instilled confidence. First, executive producer Daniel Cerone announced that John Constantine (Matt Ryan) won’t be shown smoking the character’s ubiquitous cigarettes – which, for Constantine, is like showing Superman without his cape. But this is a network show after all, and showing a character enjoying a smoke after impaling hell beasts with a wooden stake might damage the psyches of our poor children. A little whitewashing of the character seems reasonable, but we learned this week that there will also be some straightwashing involved. Cerone warned at the TCA press tour that Lgbt fans of the comics will have to wait a Long time before the John Constantine of the NBC show explores bisexuality.
