La Guerra Del Tiburtino III has as its international title Rome: Tales From the Block, which shows you how much this film wears its influences on its sleeve. From the opening segment, in which an alien creature leaves a meteor and takes over the brain of a middle aged schlub, it is clear that this film operates in a similar vein to Joe Cornish' Attack The Block, setting an alien invasion in the outskirts of a city, where the people who live there consider themselves the have-nots. Outside of dealing with financial struggles, petty crime, poor neighborhood cleaning and such, they now also have to deal with an invasion of bodysnatchers. Invasion of the Body Snatchers itself is also a clear reference point, as are...

In any given year, British TV can be relied on to provide plenty in the way of crime drama, and 2023 was no different. Between these returning series and newcomers A Town Called Malice, Blue Lights, Marlow, Payback, Rebus, Steeltown Murders, The Gold, The Sixth Commandment, Wolf and more, crime continued to flourish on the small screen.
Happily though, that was far from all that UK TV offered this year. There was fantasy too, in the form of Netflix’s South London super-powers drama Supacell, ghost detective series Lockwood & Co., Greek and Roman mythology series Kaos, and sci-fi in Prime Video’s The Rig.
Add to all those the romances, dramas inspired by real-life, and several other book adaptations, period and otherwise plus music-based dramas Champion and This Town, and it was a pretty full slate.

Netflix Metrics The Glory
Data dump: Since its inception — and especially since it became an original content player — Netflix has wrestled with releasing viewing data publicly. This week, its improving levels of transparency reached new heights with the release of What We Watched, a global report on 18,000+ titles from its library (equating to 99% of its catalog) covering the first six months of 2023. Data transparency was one of the key issues in the WGA and SAG-AFTRA contract negotiations, and while these new semi-annual reports aren’t the full picture, they provide insight deeper than anything released before. Katie Campione’s extensive analysis, on everything from data to the timing of the release, is well worth a read here.

Fans of British TV ate well in 2023. The year said goodbye to some excellent British TV shows with the finales of extraordinary crime dramas Happy Valley, Top Boy, Guilt and Endeavour – four very different shows set in four very different places. We waved off comedies Sex Education and Ghosts, and welcomed back some exciting returns in the form of Black Mirror, Good Omens and of course, Doctor Who.
And then there were the new additions – superhero comedy Extraordinary, police newbie drama Blue Lights, mind-bending comic book adaptation Bodies and chilling true crime series The Sixth Commandment.
It’s hard to separate the pack, but using a complex system of pulleys and levers, a gunge machine and – unfortunately necessary for the person who nominated The Idol – an oubliette, Den of Geek polled its writers and drew up two lists of the best TV of the year, one for American shows and...

Netflix further prized open the lid to its black box of data on Tuesday, with the streamer publishing a list of viewing figures for nearly 2,000 titles in its library.
The ratings dump covers the first half of 2023 and is measured as “hours viewed,” which departs from Netflix’s publication of “views,” the metric that it began using this year to rank its Top 10 lists.
Hours viewed puts shorter content at a significant disadvantage, while longer series (usually dramas) stand to benefit, but the figures do still offer a rare insight into Netflix subscriber behavior.
U.S. films and series unsurprisingly dominate Netflix’s list, with political conspiracy thriller The Night Agent topping the pile with 812M hours viewed. Little wonder Netflix renewed the series so swiftly.
The Brits were heavily represented, even if the first half of 2023 appeared a little light on new UK originals, with the likes of Sex Education,...

Snakes ‘n spiders: the two cornerstone big daddies of zoophobic horror. Sure, sharks are classic and rats have had their cinematic moments, but where would the genre be without eight-legged freaks and their slithering, limbless reptile brethren? People tend to fall into two categories – arachnophobic and ophidiophobic – but even if snakes give you the willies, director Sébastien Vaniček’s debut feature will leave you yearning for their cold-blooded embrace after you meet his army of creepy-crawly web-spinners.
Kaleb (Théo Christine) makes ends meet selling sneakers to the denizens of his low-income apartment block. A lover of reptiles, amphibians, and insects, Kaleb can’t resist when he comes across a mysterious spider for sale in a friend’s shop. After taking his new little friend home and placing her in a shoe box, the spider almost immediately escapes and quickly begins laying eggs in the walls and air vents of the building.

At first glance, They Cloned Tyrone seems to find John Boyega on well-trodden ground. For the first 20 minutes of the Netflix release, Boyega’s face never changes from a hardened scowl as his character Fontaine goes through his day. Fontaine’s actions will seem familiar to anyone who’s heard an “urban” narrative, as Hollywood once often called them; Tyrone buys a 40 and some scratch-offs, he beats up a competitor on his corner, and he threatens a pimp who owes him money.
More than the generic constraints of Fontaine’s day, however, viewers may recognize elements of Boyega’s breakout character from more than a decade ago now in the unrepentant drug dealer he plays in Tyrone. Moviegoers first met Boyega as Moses in the British science-fiction comedy Attack the Block (2011), a film directed by Joe Cornish. John Boyega has signed with UTA.
The Hollywood Reporter can confirm that alongside signing the British star in all areas, the talent agency has also signed Boyega’s production company UpperRoom Productions.
The deal marks Boyega’s return to Hollywood agencies after four years away, having left WME in 2019. Since then, he’s been solely repped by Femi Oguns at the U.K.’s Identity Agency Group.
Boyega — who found global fame thanks to the Star Wars trilogy sequel — has been on something of a roll recently. He landed a Golden Globe and Critics Choice Award for his turn in Steve McQueen’s Small Axe anthology in 2021, while last year he earned critical praise for his lead performance in Breaking — which he also exec produced — and also starred in Gina Prince-Bythewood’s historical epic The Woman King.

15 years after Robert Downey Jr.'s Tony Stark built his first-ever Iron Man suit in a cave with a box of scraps, the Marvel Cinematic Universe is no longer a franchise to enter lightly. With more than 30 films and several TV shows already under its belt (and many more on the way), the property that's ruled Hollywood for the past decade now presents many of the same hurdles to entrance as the wide, wide universe of Marvel Comics. Forget being able to watch any one-off MCU film and then simply tune back in for the sequel; unless you've kept up with every relevant entry in the franchise since then, odds are there'll be some pretty big chunks of the story that fly right over your head.
Hand-wringing and hyperbole aside, though, the challenge of servicing both casual audiences and hardcore Marvel Comics fans is one the McU's creatives have always had to deal with.

Another one bites the dust as Netflix has canceled the supernatural series "Lockwood and Co." after just one season. This cancelation may come as a bit of a surprise, given that the show, which is adapted from Jonathan Stroud's popular series of books, was critically well-liked and seemingly found its audience. Be that as it may, we will not be getting more episodes.
According to Variety, Netflix opted not to renew the series, which debuted in early 2023. It featured a cast led by Ruby Stokes ("Bridgerton"), as well as relative newcomers like Cameron Chapman and Ali Hadji-Heshmati. Taking to Instagram, Stroud addressed the cancelation with an air of gratitude, saying the following:
"I'd like to thank everybody who worked so hard to create something so special. It has been a joy working with Joe, Rachael, Nira, Brad and all my other friends at Complete Fiction. They made a show...

From writer/director Joe Cornish (Attack the Block, The Kid Who Would Be King, Adventures of Tintin: The Secret of the Unicorn), “Lockwood & Co.” premiered on Netflix back in January, and we’ve learned that the series has already been given the axe.
Netflix has cancelled “Lockwood & Co.” after one season, the latest in a long line of streaming shows that have been cancelled by Netflix before they had a chance to build an audience.
Variety reports this afternoon, “Variety understands that while Netflix was very pleased with the show, and especially the work that had gone into it, viewing numbers didn’t meet the threshold to greenlight a second season. But Complete Fiction, which was founded by Cornish together with Edgar Wright, Nira Park and Rachael Prior, will continue to work with Netflix. “Lockwood & Co.” has been canceled at Netflix after one season.
The supernatural detective series, which is based on Jonathan Stroud’s young adult novels of the same name, was developed by Joe Cornish under his Complete Fiction banner and debuted on Netflix in January of this year.

The year 2015 was a time of great hope in the "Star Wars" fandom. The long-awaited sequel trilogy was upon us, with Mark Hamill, Carrie Fisher, and Harrison Ford reprising their beloved characters in a galaxy far, far away. Just as exciting (if not more so) were the young heroes slated to make their debut in the film, and in doing so, usher in a more inclusive age of "Star Wars" storytelling. As played by Daisy Ridley (Rey), John Boyega (Finn), and Oscar Isaac (Poe Dameron), these new additions proved to be instantly lovable and buoyed by amazing screen chemistry -- so much so it had us shipping them after but a handful of scenes together.
That was before the dark times. Before the divisive fan response to "The Last Jedi" and the subsequent box office failure of "Solo" left Lucasfilm scrambling, culminating in "The Rise of Skywalker," a film that...

If you've found yourself missing the fictional "Attack The Block" crew in the years since Joe Cornish's excellent London-set alien invasion movie debuted, you're not alone. In an interview for the latest issue of Total Film, star John Boyega shared some insights about the long-anticipated sequel to the 2011 movie, and revealed that he's thought about the character he played, Moses, often in the intervening years.
"It's a character that I really understand," the "Star Wars" actor explained. "In creating him when I was younger, I really understand where he's at now. It's the character that's stuck with me the longest." The character of fifteen-year-old teen gang leader Moses was then-stage actor Boyega's first-ever role on film, and his breakout role as well. Props play a huge part in ensuring a movie or TV show set comes to life, and as such, productions tend to allocate huge budgets for them. However, accidents do occur sometimes, and props get destroyed. While there are usually backup props for any damage caused, the destroyed prop can affect a shoot. One key Lockwood & Co. prop was ruined after an actor accidentally spilled milk on it.

Spoiler Alert: This story contains spoilers for Season 1 of “Lockwood & Co.,” now streaming on Netflix.
Ruby Stokes ain’t afraid of no ghosts — even in a world overrun by them.
On Netflix’s “Lockwood & Co.,” Stokes wields a rapier sword as Lucy Carlyle, who hunts down spirits in an alternative London where young adults have psychic abilities, and use them professionally to subdue ghosts.
Based on the books by Jonathan Stroud, and developed by Joe Cornish (“Attack the Block”), “Lockwood & Co.” has been a breakout for Netflix since its Jan. 27 premiere –– scaring away competitors from the streamer’s Top 10 list (which it’s reached in 74 countries).
Stokes herself is no stranger to a Netflix phenomenon, having played Francesca Bridgerton in the first two seasons of the Shondaland sensation “Bridgerton.” But to accommodate filming “Lockwood & Co.,” she appeared only a few times in Season 2, and eventually stepped away from the role,...

Lockwood & Co., the latest supernatural series to drop on Netflix, is a hit with many fans of shows like Wednesday and Locke & Key. The British show takes place 50 years after the start of “The Problem,” a sudden rise in deaths caused by ghosts. As a result, several agencies were formed to employ teenagers with special abilities to fight off the apparitions. But are the stars actually teens? Here’s a rundown of the cast members’ ages and how they compare to the Lockwood & Co. characters.
Ali Hadji-Heshmati as George, Cameron Chapman as Anthony Lockwood, and Ruby Stokes as Lucy in ‘Lockwood & Co.’ | Netflix How old is Lockwood in ‘Lockwood & Co.’?
Cameron Chapman plays Anthony Lockwood, the leader of a small agency in London known as Lockwood & Co. Unlike other agencies, Lockwood & Co. does not have an adult supervisor, so Lockwood’s company is not always taken seriously.

What do we mean when we talk about Young Adult fiction? Utter the term YA, and you will most likely picture something resembling Lockwood & Co. Netflix’s newest No 1 series has all the hallmarks of a YA smash. A mixed-gender group of teenage protagonists. A healthy dollop of the supernatural. A shelf-load of lore. Adapted from novels by Jonathan Stroud and created by Attack the Block’s Joe Cornish, the series follows a trio of juvenile ghost-hunters, played by Ruby Stokes, Cameron Chapman and Ali Hadji-Heshmati. It’s a CGI-laden fantasy melodrama, big on quips, and even bigger on action. And yet, Lockwood & Co also follows another of Netflix’s time-tested YA rules: it’s not actually very good.
Look back through the past five years of original programming, and you’ll see that the YA market is a well that Netflix has returned to many times. But the results have been mixed,...

Four-part documentary series “Murder of God’s Banker” is set for an international debut on streamer Paramount+.
In 1982, Roberto Calvi, a fugitive financier known as “God’s Banker,” was found hanging from London’s Blackfriars Bridge. What starts as an investigation surrounding one man’s death, quickly expands into a story of international intrigue, as it’s revealed that Calvi was in business with the Vatican, the Mafia, as well as neo-fascist groups in Italy. The documentary uses archival footage, stylized dramatizations and interviews with notable journalists and historians to uncover the truth behind Calvi’s murder while delving into the layers of corruption at the root of global money and power.
The series is produced by Paramount, in partnership with Creative Chaos vmg. It is written and directed by Tom Donahue. Executive producers include Ilan Arboleda, Donahue and Mike Holz, with Jessicya Materano and Jordan Bogdonavage as co-executive producers.

Paul Rudd really did go Wtf when it came to joining the MCU almost a decade ago.
The “Ant-Man” star looked back on signing on to the standalone superhero film that was released in 2015.
“My agent set up a meeting with Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige. Marvel was pretty new. They weren’t even part of Disney,” Rudd said in a Men’s Health cover story. “It would’ve been like somebody saying, ‘How would you feel about doing “Dancing with the Stars”?’ A superhero franchise was never on my radar.”
Rudd continued, “I never really thought I was the type of actor that they would offer any of those parts to. But when this idea came around, I was excited about doing something that was so out of left field, and I knew that if it was announced that I was going to be joining a superhero franchise, most people would say,...

(Welcome to Best Action Scene Ever, a column dedicated to breaking down the best, most effective action sequences throughout the genre. In this edition, Steven Spielberg takes us to school with a one-shot masterclass in "The Adventures of Tintin")
Honestly, it's not even fair how good Steven Spielberg is at his job. You'd think that anyone would simply call it a day after breaking the mold and defining the very concept of the summer blockbuster, pumping out family-friendly classics one after another, capturing the country's post-9/11 fears with brutal succinctness, and taking a well-earned victory lap with the Oscar-nominated and semi-autobiographical "The Fabelmans." But noooo, the greatest filmmaker alive had to go a step further and conquer another medium altogether -- motion-capture animation -- and do so to incredible results.

Edgar Wright’s exit from 2014 Marvel installment “Ant-Man” is being reframed once more.
Director Wright’s co-writer Joe Cornish revealed that it was the “Shaun of the Dead” helmer’s “auteur”-ism that led to the Marvel pushback in pre-production.
“When Edgar and I first met Marvel, they were in offices above a BMW showroom in Beverly Hills,” Cornish told The Playlist. “It was around the time of Ang Lee’s ‘Hulk,’ and [Jon] Favreau hadn’t even started working on the first ‘Iron Man.’ Superhero movies were not a thing… I guess because VFX hadn’t evolved to the point where they could put what was on page on the screen. So, they always felt like they were reaching for something they couldn’t achieve.”
Cornish continued, “We worked on [‘Ant-Man’] for something like eight years, on and off. And in that time, the landscape changed completely. The technology changed completely.

Chatting away to Sally Hawkins, as you do, in the fabled Abbey Road Studios in posh North London neighborhood of St. John’s Wood, she tells me ”I feel fine” when I inquire after her well-being.
Our feet are planted in the very spot where The Beatles recorded the track for “I Feel Fine,” a single that topped the charts on both sides of the Atlantic back in 1964. I couldn’t tell whether Hawkins purposefully chose those words to chime with where we were stood.

Joe Cornish’s teen ghosthunter drama Lockwood and Co. launches on Netflix globally today. The show, the streamer’s latest young-adult scripted series from the UK, stars Ruby Stokes (Bridgerton) and newcomers Cameron Chapman and Ali Hadji-Heshmati as a teen trio who run an independent ghost fighting agency in London while competing with adult-run corporate rivals.
The eight-part series, from Cornish’s Complete Fiction banner, is based on Jonathan Stroud’s books about an alternate modern world in which murderous ghosts have been attacking people since the 1960s, and only teenagers have the ability to see and repeal them. Netflix ordered it as one of seven British originals announced in December 2020. Several of these have been canned but anticipation around Lockwood has grown and reviews this week have been sparkling.

Lockwood & Co. coming to Netflix just six weeks after the streaming service cancelled its last solid adaptation of a British fantasy YA book series in The Bastard Son & The Devil Itself, feels a bit like getting a new puppy after your last one was run over. You’re happy it’s here, obviously, but there’s a tug of wariness about getting too attached.
It’s very easy to get attached to this eight-episode ghost story about three teens running a supernatural detective agency. The cast is charming, the characters are likeable and their world – in which a nightly curfew and platoons of rapier-bearing teens protects London from spectral attack – is solidly conceived.
There are ongoing mysteries plus episodic encounters and an evolving Scooby Gang dynamic between its young leads. It has a touch of Harry Potter plus a touch of Being Human, and families who enjoyed Wednesday together could...

Allow it. The low-budget indie darling "Attack the Block," which is about an alien invasion in London, singlehandedly kickstarted John Boyega's career in 2011 and turned into a cult hit thanks to those who sang its praises early on, finally crossing into the mainstream enough to justify a long-awaited sequel (while also leading us oblivious folk in the U.S. to completely misunderstand what the slang phrase "Allow it" even means in the first place). Written and directed by Joe Cornish ("The Kid Who Would Be King"), the thrilling and incisive action/comedy has taken a long, winding, but thoroughly rewarding path to reaching the current level of acclaim it now rightfully enjoys.
And those involved with the sequel are aiming their sights even higher.

The jumpscare is a fundamental building block of the horror genre — they frighten the wits out of us right when our guard is down. An effective jumpscare can be pretty thrilling or jarring depending on the intensity of it, but as most horror fans will tell you, they're hard not to be fond of.
While certain filmmakers heavily rely on jump scares in film and television, there's much to be said about storytellers who prefer to build an atmosphere of fear. It could be a dimly lit home where the protagonist is seen walking down a large, empty hallway. It could be a glimpse of a terrorizing shadow in the dark. Perhaps they're both taking place against the backdrop of eerie music — or pin-drop, anxiety-inducing silence. Both evoke a consistent feeling of fear, but how do you replicate that consistency in a show where its characters fight with ghosts?

Most actors and directors are involved at some point in movies they'd prefer to forget about. No one is lucky enough to make hits every time, after all. For Tim Burton, that's his 2001 remake of "Planet of the Apes." Even with his unimpressive 21st-century track record, that one sticks out as a clunker, and it always comes in near the bottom of the "Apes" series rankings.
Shortly after the movie's release, Burton said he would "rather jump out of the window" than direct an "Apes" sequel. His star, Mark Wahlberg, doesn't seem fond of the movie either, even if he phrased himself more diplomatically: "It was an amazing experience working with Tim. I think we kind of set the franchise back a little bit."
Another sign that Wahlberg doesn't have fond memories? He gave away the costume he wore in "Planet of the Apes." While speaking to /Film, writer-director Joe Cornish...

Joe Cornish, the writer-director of "Attack the Block" and showrunner behind the upcoming Netflix series "Lockwood & Co.," has a hankering to make a Bigfoot movie. It turns out that Cornish, a self-described "Bigfoot obsessive," is itching to do right by a genre that may not even be fully formed in everyone's eyes. Think about it: can you name five great Bigfoot movies ... or even one? How about 47 of them, ranked?
It's a sad state of affairs when the most well-known Sasquatch onscreen may be Harry from "Harry and the Hendersons." Not that there's anything wrong with Harry, who went on to star in his own sitcom and whose makeup design won Rick Baker an Oscar in the interim. But here's a fun fact about Harry: he was played by Kevin Peter Hall the same year Hall played the original "Predator."
