In this nation of 333 islands — where Chris Hemsworth and Elsa Pataky recently spent the holidays — one can’t go anywhere without hearing “Bula!” which means life and is a heartfelt, enthusiastic greeting that makes “hi” seem almost rude.
In May, Jaclyn Sienna India, CEO of ultra-luxury travel concierge Sienna Charles, scouted Fiji for a major actor client and found Navotua, a village where she (and later the actor and her family) stayed and experienced kava ceremonies, traditional welcoming rituals that show respect and reverence for guests. The client “wanted to really understand the culture,” says Sienna India. “They lived with these local tribes for four days in huts on the beach, wearing grass skirts and walking around barefoot.”
The warm hospitality, Sienna India says, was “unreal.” They’d take boats to islands where hardly a soul has stepped and staff caught fish and cooked it for them on the beach.

This review of "Playing With Sharks" was published following the film's premiere at the 2021 Sundance Film Festival.
"Playing With Sharks: The Valerie Taylor Story" tells a tale right out of mythology, with the hunter becoming the protector, helping to save the animals whom she had previously helped to portray as monsters. In capturing the work of legendary filmmaker and conservationist Valerie Taylor, this Sundance premiere from director Sally Aitken also offers a front-row look at an extraordinary life.
It helps, of course, that Valerie makes the ideal documentary subject -- candid and outgoing in interviews, discussing a life that's not only exciting and full of purpose, but also one that took place, to a large extent, in front of cameras. Aitken and editor Adrian Rostirolla make wonderful use of a plethora of archival materials, from 1950s newsreels demonstrating teenage Valerie's prowess at spearfishing to footage shot by Valerie and her late husband Ron Taylor,...

Around the same time that Emmy-nominated writer-director Sally Aitken’s latest film was debuting in the World Documentary section at Sundance, the New York Times ran a piece on the alarming decline in the worldwide shark population, citing a 70% reduction since the 1970s. It’s a statistic — possibly conservative given the underreporting from some parts of the globe — that will be only too well known to the documentary’s subject, Valerie Taylor, the iconic Australian marine conservationist who has dedicated her life to the species’ preservation. This life is accessibly and straightforwardly celebrated in “Playing With Sharks”: As Dian Fossey was to gorillas and Jane Goodall is to chimps, so is Valerie Taylor to this 450-million-year-old class of carnivorous, cartilaginous fish.
In amongst surprisingly comprehensive archive footage of her youth as a world-class diver and spear-fisher, Taylor recounts her story in interview segments shot in her oceanside home. Though...

Schwarzenegger is producing London and La-based 3D Entertainment Films’ feature documentary with François Mantello and will feature in the opening sequence.
Conquistador Entertainment will introduce the project to buyers and screen it in Cannes and the producers have earmarked a global release later in the year.
Cousteau, son of the legendary oceanographer Jacques Cousteau, shot the film over the course of three years in locations spanning Fiji to the Bahamas and explores the beauty of ocean life and the threats to its existence.
“From the very beginning, my wish was that the narrator of Wonders Of The Sea 3D be profoundly connected to the environment, and we could not have better fulfilled that mission,” Cousteau said.

Jérôme Salle on Lambert Wilson as Jacques-Yves Cousteau: "It helps when you ask a very nice person to be a very tough person."
Once again, inside the Furman Gallery at Lincoln Center during the Rendez-Vous with French Cinema exhibition of Paul Ronald's color photographs from Federico Fellini's 81/2, where I met Christophe Honoré for a conversation on Les Malheurs De Sophie, The Odyssey (L'Odyssée) director Jérôme Salle spoke with me on the performances of Lambert Wilson and Audrey Tautou. Bill Murray and Cate Blanchett in Wes Anderson's The Life Aquatic With Steve Zissou, composer Alexandre Desplat, Calypso captain Albert Falco (Vincent Heneine), nicknamed Bébert (which recalls for me the cat featured in Emmanuel Bourdieu's Louis-Ferdinand Céline), were also washed ashore.

In 2015, at an Oceana event hosted by Cobie Smulders, I spoke with Jacques-Yves Cousteau's granddaughter and Expedition Blue Planet filmmaker, Alexandra Cousteau. In my conversation with The Odyssey (L'Odyssée) director, Jérôme Salle, we explore the world around Alexandra's grandfather portrayed by Lambert Wilson in his film with Audrey Tautou as Jacques' wife Simone, Pierre Niney (Adrian in François Ozon's Frantz) and Benjamin Lavernhe as their sons.

A self-acknowledged "showcase for Academy Award frontrunners," the Santa Barbara International Film Festival is often overlooked for the actual films that earn it festival status. An amalgamation of international discoveries and ’merica’s circuit highlights, the Sbiff curates a week of best-of-the-best to pair with their star-praising. The 2015 edition offers another expansive selection, bookended by two films that aren’t on any radars just yet. Sbiff will open with "Desert Dancer," producer Richard Raymond’s directorial debut. Starring Reece Ritchie and Frieda Pinto, the drama follows a group of friends who wave off the harsh political climate of Iran’s 2009 presidential election in favor of forming a dance team, picking up moves from Michael Jackson, Gene Kelly and Rudolf Nureyev thanks to the magic of YouTube. The festival will close with "McFarland, USA," starring Kevin Costner and Maria Bello. Telling the 1987 true story of a Latino high school’s underdog cross-country team,...

Indiewire sat down with Paul Walker, who tragically died over the weekend at the too-young age of 40, this March in Austin to discuss his affecting turn in the indie thriller "Hours," which premiered at the 2013 SXSW Film Festival. To honor the star's passing, we've republished portions of the interview (for the full discussion, go here) that attest to what a fine father he was to his daughter, Meadow Walker, and reveal his mellowed mindset following his early success. You’re having quite the year with so many films coming up. Do you feel like you’re experiencing a second coming of sorts? No, I think I’m just playing a little more now and I never wanted to before. To be honest with you, I wanted it to all go away. Why’s that? I wanted to be a marine biologist. I read you went to school for that. Yeah,...

Cinelinx is at P. Sherman's at 42 Wallaby Way in Sydney watching the outstanding new Finding Nemo Collector's Edition Blu-ray!
The Set-up
A clownfish named Marlin (voice of Albert Brooks) goes on a desperate search for his son Nemo (voice of Alexander Gould) when he is taken from the ocean by a human to become a pet. A fish named Dory (voice of Ellen Degeneres) aids him on his quest.
Directed by: Andrew Stanton
The Delivery
An absolute instant classic upon its release in 2003, Finding Nemo charmed audiences with the perfect balance of heart and laughs. The film manages to move from one visual gag to the next with ease, with a number of dramatic points mixed in. The tone is just right, and even when it gets silly or sad, the underlying theme of a love between father and son keeps the film emotionally grounded and moving in the right direction.

Tonight, Discovery seems to be airing a non-Shark Week themed show since "One Man Army" is airing at its usual time. I've checked the episode description and nowhere does it mention Anything about sharks so that's frustrating and confusing. They've managed to make episodes of "Mythbusters" and "Dirty Jobs" that were Shark Week themed so I don't know why they can't just do that for all shows that air during Shark Week. And since the same company owns TLC and Discovery channel maybe they could send a few sharks over to "Toddlers and Tiaras" to get these parents to have a little perspective. "What's that? Your little girl doesn't like it when you bleach her hair because it burns? That's a shame. We've got someone to help you deal with those feelings. Actually, several someones. Or somethings. We call the big one Bitey." Here's your Wednesday night TV:

Sharks 3D isn’t a movie exactly, but a museum attraction. Created for IMAX theatres in 2004, the short film (42 minutes) is a primer for ocean life, with a focus on sharks, but also a lot of long sideways glances at schools of sardines and dolphins as well. There’s no narrative to speak of, and no real meat in regards to educational information - just some thin stats delivered by a British-accented sea turtle who serves as our narrator.

This isn’t our usual sort of thing to review here on HeyUGuys but I’m always a fan of documentaries and when I got offered this one about the creatures of the deep so I thought, why not! Universal Home Entertainment and International Entertainment have created the 3D Ocean Trilogy on 3D which contains titles which were originally shown in IMAX theatres, Ocean Wonderland 3D, Sharks 3D and Dolphins & Whales: Tribes of the Ocean 3D, the later of which is narrated by Daryl Hannah and all are directed by Jean-Michel Cousteau.
The main draw to these titles will be the 3d aspect and while most homes still don’t have 3d capabilities (including me), these movies are still great if you’re a fan of nature documentaries. All three of these Blu-rays give you the option to watch in 2d so don’t let the 3d titles put you off.

As the grandson of oceanographic explorer Jacques Cousteau and son of aquatic filmmaker Jean-Michel Cousteau, Fabien Cousteau has a large legacy to uphold. Now, just in time for World Oceans Day, the younger Cousteau is preparing to make his mark with Plant a Fish, a nonprofit focusing on worldwide ocean restoration. But before exploring the outer reaches of the planet's seas, Plant a Fish will work in Cousteau's home base: New York City.
Plant a Fish's first project, launched Monday, saw Cousteau working with students at the Urban Assembly New York Harbor School, a Bushwick, Brooklyn public school. Cousteau led the students on a dive in Bay Ridge, Brooklyn to plant 130,000 oysters. "This used to be the world's largest oyster rookery," Cousteau tells Fast Company. He hopes that the program will eventually plant 1 billion oysters in the area.
