" When I sat down for a casual lunch in New York City with my editor, the Discovery Chanel head of PR, and Philippe Cousteau (yes, the Cousteau, (his grandfather is the legendary under water explorer Jacques Cousteau,) the last thing on my mind was going swimming with sharks for Shark Week. But, before we finished the guacamole and chips I had agreed to do exactly that. One month later I was a certified open water scuba diver, clinging to a rock 60-ft underwater in Tahiti, while a 17-ft Tiger shark loomed inches above my head.

var brightcovevideoid = '2804743776001'; So what if you have to go to your job and work really hard all week? This baby Sumatran tiger was rejected by its mother for having a bum leg. (Perspective people, perspective!) We all should be in awe of the work scientists are doing at this orphan sanctuary in Sumatra, Indonesia, where orangutans and other abandoned and endangered animals are being given a second chance. Thanks to the tireless work of their caretakers - who try to mimic the creatures' mothers by sleeping beside them - they are thriving and hopefully will one day return to the wild.

The inspiring lecture series tackles the unfolding oil-spill disaster.
Ted recently launched TEDx, a program for independently organized events that has usually centered on individual locales--TEDxVienna, TEDxTehran, and TEDxCalgary, for example. But on June 28th, TEDx is tackling the Bp Gulf Spill: TEDxOilSpill, in Washington, DC, will feature renewable energy and ocean experts, including oceanographer Sylvia Earle, adventurer Philippe Cousteau, and SunEdison founder Jigar Shah.
TEDxOilSpill comes with a bonus: Reports from five photographers and videographers who are currently spending a week traveling around the Gulf to document oil and water on the beach, Bp officials interfering with the media, and people affected by the disaster. The team believes that it can cover what the mainstream media cannot because it is "outside the scope of the major media networks who have to balance out immediate access with ongoing relationships with local officials." For the event, the team plans to put together documentary videos,...

In a larger-than-life event like the Gulf Oil disaster, words can only do so much to portray the bitterness, anguish, and absurdity of the situation. We must also rely on images and video to document the tragedy. We've shown you some of the pictures. Below, we take a look at 5 of the most important Deepwater Horizon disaster-related videos, both serious and humorous.
This video from National Geographic shows the Deepwater Horizon rig shortly after the April 20th explosion that caused the underwater oil leak. At this point in time, the worst part of the disaster appeared to be the fiery rig.

Last week, Bp CEO Tony Hayward made the egregious error of saying he "would like his life back". Needless to say, the comment drew many angry responses from Gulf Coast residents.
