It has been a long held belief that mainstream video game to film adaptations are cursed to fail. Since the infamous balls up Super Mario Bros. to last year’s muddled Assassin’s Creed, the list of movies that failed to translate the material onscreen is endless and there has yet to be a major studio film based on a video game to enjoy widespread acclaim. Now, obviously, some of us may have different ideas of what has and has not worked so far, for instance I consider Duncan Jones’ Warcraft: The Beginning to be the best video game film yet – it’s a good old fashioned axe swing spell casting fantasy yarn despite the bad reviews saying otherwise. One thing is for sure though, the wait for a big success goes on. So will the newly rebooted Tomb Raider (which is unrelated to the two previous Angelina Jolie Lara...

A sequel to the Alicia Vikander-starring Tomb Raider movie reboot is officially set to arrive in 2021.
Warning: This article contains spoilers for the ending of 2018’s Tomb Raider.
We liked 2018’s Tomb Raider more than most, especially its promising ending, which saw Lara Croft (Alicia Vikander) figuring out that her late father's business partner, Ana Miller (Kristin Scott Thomas), is behind the mysterious Trinity organization that is looking to take over the world and is responsible for Richard Croft's death; a game-changing tidbit that opens several sequel possibilities. However, the film didn’t exactly wreak havoc on its box office competition, leaving fans to wonder if such a sequel would ever get made.
In the latest news, the Tomb Raider reboot movie sequel now has a director and a release date!

Tomb Raider, at its best, just passes for an entertaining action movie. Some of its fight scenes are exciting, and in its final act, there’s a neat tomb for a fleshed-out Lara Croft (Alicia Vikander) to raid. However, the ways in which aptly-named director Roar Uthaug goes about depicting his popular heroine – basing her entire motivation on her relationship with her father and constantly having her female physique stop her at critical moments – drop the ball when it comes to establishing a badass adventurer.
Given that the film draws a lot of its inspiration from the game’s popular 2013 reboot, it’s discouraging that Uthaug didn’t pick up any of the things that make Croft an interesting character along the way. This is quite a rough start for what will surely become yet another video game based franchise. However, being the first in this suggested franchise, Tomb Raider...

[Editor’s note: The following contains spoilers for “Tomb Raider.”]
Another day, another reboot. This time, it’s Lara Croft, the video game adventuress and raider of tombs first personified on the big screen by Angelina Jolie, who gets a fresh start with Alicia Vikander taking over the titular role. The new “Tomb Raider” film draws heavily from the 2013 video game reboot, and fans of “Tomb Raider” and its sequel, “Rise of the Tomb Raider,” will be pleasantly surprised at how many details actually make it into the film.
Unlike her predecessor, Vikander sports Lara’s updated look: a gray tank top and cargo pants. She also arms herself with a bow and a quiver filled with arrows, as well as a red grappling hook, all weapons which Lara uses in the video games. The plot is also pretty similar to the events of the 2013 game, with Lara fighting her way off of the mysterious and isolated island of Yamatai.

Warner Brothers has released the a new trailer for ‘Tomb Raider‘. Based on the best-selling series of video games with the same name, the film follows Lara Croft (Alicia Vikander) as she attempts to uncover the mysterious disappearance of her father.
It’s Dominic West‘s Richard Croft that seems to be both the focus of the plot, but the trailer itself. The trailer showcases more of the action, which seems to be in line with what we’ve seen in the more recent video games, and less like the stylized action of the first stab at the franchise with ‘Lara Croft: Tomb Raider‘. And then there’s Walton Goggins, who by my estimation, is probably the best thing that the movie has going for it. Hopefully this film will finally be able to break the curse of lackluster video game adaptations, but only time will tell.

The real full trailer for the new Tomb Raider film has been unleashed and it's a lot better than the one that was prematurely released recently. This one gives us a much better sense of the kind of film that we'll see and the story that the movie will tell, and it looks like it could be a decent movie! I really want this to be a good film as I'm a huge fan of the video game franchise. I hope that they actually pull this off and make a film that fans will be happy with. Check out the trailer for yourself and tell us what you think!
Tomb Raider is being directed by Roar Uthaug (The Wave) and it also stars Walton Goggins as Father Mathias Vogel; Daniel Wu as Lu Ren, the ship captain who helps Lara in searching for her Father; Dominic West as Lord Richard Croft,...

Thanks to Empire, we have a new photo from the director Roar Uthaug's upcoming Tomb Raider movie. It offers us a new look at Alicia Vikander striking a familiar pose as Lara Croft armed with a bow and arrow. When talking about the character and how they wanted to approach her in the film, Vikander said:
"We asked, ‘What are the famous traits of this person? ‘How can we demonstrate them in the story, but make her feel like a young woman in 2018?’”
When previously talking about the character, the actress said:
“She has all the fierce, tough, curious, intelligent traits, but we’ve stripped away all of her experience. She hasn’t gone on an adventure just yet. She thought he was a stuck up business person living in the modern youth culture of suburban London, but then this whole box of information. This is the beginning.”

Thanks to Vanity Fair, we have our first official look at Alicia Vikander as Lara Croft in the upcoming Tomb Raider film, and I think she looks great in the role! She's one of the main reasons why I'm excited about this movie. There are three photos here for you to check out. We previously saw some images of her on the set of the film, and as you can see, she's sporting the look inspired by the 2013 video game reboot. When talking about taking on this iconic role, the actress said:
"When I was asked to take on this role I got really excited—Lara Croft is a truly iconic character. I think people can identify with her for lots of different reasons, but for me I very much see her as a model for many young women. She’s trying to carve out her place in the world...

I was excited to hear that Ex Machina star Alicia Vikander was going to play Lara Croft in the new Tomb Raider movie. She's become one of my favorite actresses working today because she's extremely talented.
Vikander currently shooting Tomb Raider, and thanks to some photos that have surfaced from the set, we have our first look at the actress as Croft. She looks freakin' great in the role! As you can see, the outfit she's wearing is reminiscent of the one we have seen in the video game reboot, which the film is inspired by.

Today we learned that one my favorite television actors, Dominic West, is joining the cast of the rebooted Tomb Raider franchise. You probably remember him best from The Wire, where he played Jimmy McNulty, the protagonist of the show and a character with many personal and intriguing demons. He stamped his mark on society with this character because The Wire is considered one of the best written shows of all time, and the last time I remember West was in the only decent Punisher movie ever made where he played the iconic Jigsaw.
According to THR, West will be playing Lord Richard Croft, the father of Lara Croft in the upcoming Tomb Raider reboot. This role was originally played by Jon Voight in the Angelina Jolie Tomb Raider movies a decade ago. We know Voight is Jolie's father in "real life," and while West can't claim that over the current...

Dominic West, who will forever be associated with his role as Detective Jimmy McNulty on HBO's The Wire, has been cast as Lara Croft's father in Tomb Raider, the new film starring Oscar winner Alicia Vikander that went into production earlier this week.
The film follows Lara Croft as she sets out on her first expedition to finish her father's research and uncover ancient secrets in order to clear his disgraced name.Croft’s father, Lord Richard Croft, is a key figure in the Raider mythos and is an aristocrat and archeologist. (Jon Voight played the character in the Angelina Jolie-starring Raider movies.)
I can totally see West playing an adventuring archeologist. There are a number of ways they could go with this: showing him in action in flashbacks, having him interact with Lara in present day through dreams or daydreams, have him appear only in pre-recorded video diaries that Lara studies for clues,...

Dominic West is set to join the cast of the upcoming film adaptation of the “Tomb Raider” video game series, TheWrap has learned. He will play Sir Richard Croft, the father of the series’ heroine Lara Croft, played by Alicia Vikander. In the video games, Lara Croft is inspired to become an archeologist by her late father’s research, which she uses as a guide to find treasure that could have supernatural powers. But according to the film’s producer, Graham King, the new film will show Lara going on her first quest to discover if her father is truly dead,...

Dominic West has been cast as Lara Croft’s father, Lord Richard Croft, according to The Hollywood Reporter. Tomb Raider is the third film adaptation of the long-running video game series, the first two of which starred Angelina Jolie and her real-life father, Jon Voight. This iteration stars Alicia Vikander in the lead role. Roar Uthaug (The Wave) will direct. West, known to American audiences for his roles in The Affair and The Wire, can let his English accent out in the role, as the Croft family is part of England’s monied upper crust.
Tomb Raider will see Lara set out to clear her father’s disgraced name and finish his archaeological research. As per usual with the series, the tomb raiding includes uncovering ancient secrets and battling nefarious foes (probably a modern iteration of an ancient secret organization). The plot sounds like it’s been pulled straight from...

We already knew that the upcoming Tomb Raider movie reboot starring Alicia Vikander would be using elements from the most recent video game adventures of Lara Croft, but today we've got some new details on the story to share with you thanks to HeyUGuys and an interview they had with Tomb Raider producer Graham King. There's an interesting twist they've added to the story involving Croft's search for her father. King explains:
"Well this is kind of what we call a 'back to the roots story.' This is a young Lara Croft in search to see if her father is dead or alive, so it has a very emotional part to it and I think that’s what Alicia found so interesting about it. I think the storytelling is really good and I think we’ve got the right crew and a great director and I think it’s...

With Hackers already spoken for, and Morgan Freeman's ridiculous 'loom of fate' ruining the otherwise rather decent Wanted, Jolie's turn as gaming icon Lara Croft looms largest over her career for me – largest in that it's still somehow seen as a rather huge mistake that she inexplicably recovered from. That reputation is one really worth reassessing, though. Sure, Jolie only narrowly missed out...
