Mel Gibson and Bruce Davey’s Icon Productions announced on Thursday they have acquired Mark Donaldson’s novel.
The Crossroad recounts Donaldson’s life story, from troubled teenager to an elite soldier in Afghanistan who became the first Australian to receive the Victoria Cross since 1969.
Donaldson’s split-second decision under heavy fire in 2008 to save the life of an interpreter whom he barely knew changed the course of both men’s lives and enabled him to defeat his own demons.
These are busy times for Gibson, whose Hacksaw Ridge gets its world premiere out of competition in Venice.
Days later, Voltage Pictures will launch sales in Toronto on long-gestating Oed project The Professor And The Madman, which will star Gibson, Sean Penn and new addition Natalie Dormer.

Prince William knew just what to do with a set of Christmas bells he got from some schoolchildren he met Wednesday outside London - use them as an audible alarm system on his toddler son. "We'll put these in [George's] pockets and then we'll know where he is in the house!" William, 32, joked after receiving the little bag of red bell Christmas ornaments from 9-year-old Dylan Marten Hughes. The children, from three primary schools in Watford, near London, had been showing William a project that portrayed a man in a suit made of poppies. "Each of the poppies represent a soldier who died,...

Johnson Beharry has broken his finger during rehearsals for ‘Dancing On Ice’.
The Lance Corporal – who was awarded the Victoria Cross military honour for saving colleagues in war-torn Iraq – severed his finger this week after a skate blade landed on his hand, and is now said to be terrified the injury has ruined his chances of winning the hit ITV1 show.

Karen, 49, used to sit alongside Jason on the show’s panel but this year she was asked to look after and train up contestants for this year’s sixth series, and as head coach she is allowed to give feedback on the judges’ comments.
However, furious Jason – who is joined on the panel by Spice Girls singer Emma Bunton and Robin Cousins – claims she undermines their comments with her “mother hen” routine.
He told The Sun newspaper: “Why is she still here? I find the woman infuriating. I...

Johnson Beharry has admitted that his Dancing On Ice training is going well.
The Iraq war hero, who was awarded the Victoria Cross in 2005, has revealed that while he is never fully happy with his rehearsal sessions, the show staff have been impressed by his progress.
Lance Corporal Beharry said:
The training is going fine, I am never happy though. I think everyone else is pleased with how my training is progressing. People who work at my training rink can’t believe how much I’ve developed on the ice in a few short weeks. My trainer showed me today how to do backward crossovers, after twenty minutes I was doing it
all by myself, but I am never happy. Everything I do in life has to be a hundred percent. I’m also doing lifting now so I’m getting there slowly.
He added:
I hadn’t fallen properly until the day before yesterday.

Cy Endfield's 1964 Anglo-Zulu war tale may omit the salient facts and fulsome moustaches of the real skirmish of Rorke's Drift, but it's great entertainment
Director: Cy Endfield
Entertainment grade: B+
History grade: C+
The battle of Rorke's Drift on 22-23 January 1879 was part of the Anglo-Zulu war. Fewer than 150 British soldiers, of whom almost a quarter were invalids before the fighting even started, defended a postage-stamp of land against 4,500 Zulu warriors. Though not strategically significant, it is famous for a shock British victory against near-impossible odds.
War
Zulu opens with a dramatic tableau of the burning wreckage and strewn British bodies over the battlefield at Isandlwana. It then cuts to a lengthy and interesting, if not entirely pertinent, mass marriage celebration at the court of the Zulu king Cetshwayo. This is the only peek into the Zulu side of the story you're going to get, so enjoy...
