The New York Times’ film critic A.O. Scott is moving to a new beat.
Scott, who has reviewed more than 2,200 films for the Times over the last 23 years, will shift to The New York Times Book Review where he will “write critical essays, notebooks and reviews that grapple with literature, ideas and intellectual life,” according to a memo to Times staff from Sam Sifton, Gilbert Cruz and Sia Michel Tuesday.
“In many ways this is a natural progression,” they added in the note. “Tony was a literature concentrator at Harvard, graduating magna cum laude in 1987, and is a graduate-school dropout in American literature (Johns Hopkins: thank you, next!). He started his journalism career as an assistant to Robert Silvers at The New York Review of Books and was soon contributing reviews there, as well as to Slate and, of course, to Newsday.”

Ben Brantley, the influential New York Times theater critic, will leave the job next month. “This pandemic pause in the great, energizing party that is the theater seemed to me like a good moment to slip out the door,” Brantley said in a statement.
News of Brantley’s departure was announced on Twitter by the newspaper’s theater reporter, Michael Paulson.
Brantley joined the Times as its second-string theater critic in 1993, taking the chief critic job three years later. His last day on the job will be Oct. 15. The paper’s newish co-chief critic title currently is shared by Brantley and Jesse Green, who will remain on board.
According to Paulson, the Times will fill Brantley’s position, though the Broadway pandemic shutdown makes any action less pressing. Culture editor Gilbert Cruz, said Paulson, “is committed to filling Ben’s position. But, given that the coronavirus pandemic has indefinitely prevented most in-person performance,...

Every week, members of the Vulture staff will highlight their favorite new songs. They might be loud, quiet, long, short, danc-y, rawkin', hip, square, rap, punk, jazz, some sort of jazz-punk-rap fusion — whatever works for the given person in that given week. Read our picks below and please tell us yours in the comments. Enjoy!Gilbert Cruz (@GilbertCruz): The New Pornographers, “Brill Bruisers” Normally, if I heard a song that started with the lines, “Bo ba, bo ba ba bo, Bo ba, bo ba ba,” I would run far, far away on the chance that it was about to go into full a capella mode. But this is the first track from the New Pornographers' upcoming album, Brill Bruisers, and there are few things I want more in this world than more songs from A.C. Newman and Co. Welcome to Issue #41 of The Marvelous Da7e!
Real quick mission statement: this column is for discussion of superhero movie news and superhero movies. Titular allegiance aside, this sphere includes non-Marvel properties.
This week: X-Men Days of Future past links to Godzilla and Spider-Man. Calling all women to the megafranchise!
Come With Me To Days Of Future Past!
Did anyone else notice that the last trailer for X-Men: Days of Future Past was scored by a remix of Led Zeppelin’s “Kashmir” but at a faster tempo with modern instrumentation, so it instantly called to mind the last modernized-up-tempo “Kashmir.” It was called “Come With Me” and was a track for 1998′s Godzilla.
Check out the video for that, in case you don’t remember.
Ok, then here’s the Days of Future Past “final trailer”
Do You Hear It?!?! It’S The Same Tempo.
As the proud owner of XMenDaysOfFuturePast.

This weekend marks the 40th anniversary of Carrie, Stephen King's first novel, published on April 5, 1974. Gilbert Cruz spoke to actor, comedian, and King fan Patton Oswalt for this as-told-to piece. I cannot remember the actual first Stephen King book that I read. It could have been Salem’s Lot. But I do have very vivid memories of reading The Stand when I was about 10 or 11. All the older kids were reading it. I remember very distinctly that thick paperback with the dark cover with the human face and the crow face on it, and how there was just something so sinister about it. I was a big Close Encounters fan, and they kind of aped that movie's poster with the highway and the light. You started seeing The Stand everywhere. It was the equivalent at the time of something being viral. Not only did I see Stephen King's...

For a movie about a giant scary monster, the first Godzilla trailer is a little light on wreckage: there's a subway car you wouldn't want to be on, and an airport terminal on fire, and a hole in the middle of a city building, and … okay, yeah, there is a good amount of destruction. But the majority of the trailer is people reacting: Elizabeth Olson looking scared; Bryan Cranston weeping; David Strathairn solemnly preparing his troops for battle. If you were hoping for a glimpse of what exactly they are reacting to (spoiler: it's a monster!), then sit tight and don't blink during the foggy scene at the end. Also, deputy editor Gilbert Cruz would like to point out that this trailer uses music from 2001: A Space Odyssey. You are now ready for movie trivia night.

Tragedy has struck "Glee" actress and international recording artist Charice Pempengco. The AP reports that her estranged father Ricky Pempengco was stabbed to death in her hometown in the Philippines.
The 40-year-old construction worker had reportedly been at a grocery store in the township of San Pedro, which is south of Manila, late Monday night (Oct. 31) when he bumped against a drunk man who then became angry and stabbed Ricky with an ice pick in the chest and back, the province police chief Gilbert Cruz tells the AP.
There is a manhunt on for the suspect. Cruz says there is no indication the suspect and victim knew one another.
The AP also reports that local media says Charice's mother left Ricky when Charice and her younger brother were children.
