My only connection with Wakefield Poole prior to watching Boys in the Sand was Calvin Culver (also known as Casey Donovan) who appeared in Radley Metzger’s film, Score. Of course, the name Wakefield Poole is one you hear a lot when you are a fan of the Golden Age of adult cinema. Thanks to those chaps at Vinegar Syndrome, us fans of classic smut can now experience the works of Wakefield Poole with their Films of Wakefield Poole Collection.
Boys In The Sand
Kicking off the collection is Boys in the Sand, Poole’s directorial debut. The film is a piece of experimental art house pornography that is beautifully shot on the picturesque Fire Island. There is no dialogue or diegetic sound of any kind, in its place is music. Of course, there are hardcore scenes but they are shot tastefully and are in some places, very passionate and intense.

The name Wakefield Poole may not mean much to mainstream audiences but in the 1970s he was quite a controversial filmmaker. Poole initially trained for the ballet then drifted into movie making. In 1971, Poole released Boys in the Sand, the first "up market" hardcore gay movie. It caused quite a sensation and was immediately embraced by long-suffering gay males who heretofore had to be content with low-end, quickly shot pornographic "loops" that played in Times Square grindhouses. Poole's film was taken seriously by the critical establishment and actually earned praise in reputable publications like Variety. The film actually cracked Variety's list of the top 50 grossing films in America, an amazing achievement for a movie with limited appeal and distribution. It also made a gay movie icon of actor Casey Donovan. Poole and Donovan followed this project up with another hardcore porn flick, Bijou, which was released in...

Nitv launches at midday
Specialist indigenous channel Nitv has widened its audience with the launch of the channel on free to air television today.
Specialising in Aboriginal and Torres Strait news, culture, affairs and entertainment, Nitv will continue to appear on Foxtel and also on SBS4 which was previously a narrowcasting service.
The move to free to air TV was announced in May when $158.1m in federal funding was allocated to Sbs.
Nitv began airing in July in 2007 following a funding announcement from the government in September 2005.
A two-hour special from Uluru, hosted by journalist Stan Grant and Rhoda Roberts kicked off the channel’s new version. A two hour evening concert from Uluru at 8pm will include Casey Donovan, Christine Anu, Troy Cassar-Daley and Rhoda Roberts.
A campaign by agency Us Sydney launched in late November to promote the channel.

Radley Metzger is widely acknowledged as one of America's greatest erotic filmmakers, which basically means that he's more serious than Russ Meyer and his films more artful than most porn. Metzger is perhaps best known for Camille 2000 (1969), The Lickerish Quartet (1970), The Opening of Misty Beethoven (1975), and Score, which has been re-released on DVD in an uncensored version.
Adapted by Jerry Douglas from his own play, Score features four main characters, plus a fifth supporting character. It takes place over a weekend in a fictitious European city. A "swinging" couple, Elvira (Claire Wilbur) and Jack (Gerald Grant) have a running contest to see who can seduce more members of the same sex. They lure other couples over for dinner, and Elvira sleeps with the woman, while Jack sleeps with the man. Their latest victims are newly married Eddie (Casey Donovan) and Betsy...

Casey Donovan has revealed that she has lost 20kg in the past seven months. The 22-year-old former Australian Idol winner, who decided to shed 40kg after being advised to lose weight by her doctor, said that she feels "great" since enlisting the help of a life coach and personal trainers. Donovan told New Idea magazine: "My confidence is through the roof and I'm happy and full of life. I step outside every day with a smile on my face, and that's a long way from where I was. "It's been tough and very, very demanding, so (more)...
