The idea of the hardcore Star Wars fan who hoards a massive collection of merchandise and refuses to let anyone touch or look at it is a well-worn stereotype at this point, but Steve Sansweet—the owner of the largest privately-owned Star Wars collection in the world—has just learned a valuable lesson in what happens when you let people get too close to your Star Wars stuff. As reported by io9, Sansweet has revealed that over 100 items have been stolen from his Rancho Obi-Wan collection in Northern California (a non-profit organization that gives the proceeds from tours to various charities), but this wasn’t some kind of nerdy smash-and-grab. It turns out that the alleged culprit was a close friend of Sansweet’s named Carl Edward Cunningham, and he had been quietly stealing items from Sansweet’s collection over the last few months and then reselling them.

Furious 7 looks to be taking a victory lap. After grossing $1.5B globally, Universal is now reporting that the film has taken in another $52.5M from the home video market. It was released approximately one week ago on DVD and Blu-Ray and has already sold nearly 2.5 million units. That’s the highest home video sales numbers for any live-action film in 2015.
“Furious 7 shattered records around the world at the box office and continues to reach incredible heights in home entertainment, an extraordinary achievement for the seventh installment of any franchise,” Uphe president Eddie Cunningham said. “Such astonishing results in both theatrical and home entertainment are a true testament to the enduring appeal of The Fast and the Furious films and underscore the strong demand amongst both physical and digital consumers to have instant access to one of the year’s greatest must-own movies.”

Independent film distributor Bleecker Street and Universal Pictures Home Entertainment have inked a multi-year output deal in which Uphe will handle all marketing, sales and home video and VOD release services for Bleecker Street films in the U.S. The announcement was made jointly today by Uphe President Eddie Cunningham and Bleecker Street CEO Andrew Karpen, who earlier this week sealed a Canadian distribution deal with Elevation. Bleecker Street looks to fill the specialty market void left when Peter Schlessel took over Universal specialty label Focus with a more genre-focus in mind. Karpen is looking for both limited and wide releases, and is willing to use multiple avenues to reach audiences, whether theatrical day-and-date, although he still believes in the traditional theatrical model, according to a source close to the company. Bleecker is looking for a mix of acquisitions and co-productions, and has no plans to form a foreign sales component,...

Eddie Cunningham Named Universal Pictures Worldwide Home Entertainment President, Craig Kornblau Out
Eddie Cunningham has been promoted to president of Universal Pictures Worldwide Home Entertainment, the studio said Tuesday. Craig Kornblau, who had served as president of Universal’s domestic home entertainment division will be leaving to pursue other endeavors, Universal said. He has been with the company for 16 years. The leadership change comes after Universal shook up its home entertainment division last September, by merging it with its digital sales group. The move was a concession to growth of online sales of movies and TV shows, which studios such as Universal increasingly see as a way to offset the decline in the popularity of DVD.

Imagine if American Pickers and Duck Dynasty had a love child. You’d have Dukes Of Haggle – the latest iteration of the still-going-strong “found money” reality TV genre. Discovery Channel has ordered 12 episodes of Dukes Of Haggle, to debut tomorrow night. It’s about four rival teams of barterers working in the “barter economy that exists along the backroads of the American South,” the network explained. These teams scour the south to barter-up at barns, swap meets and other, less likely places. Apparently the bartering business is becoming more competitive there. Once they’ve collected their Prohibition-era kegerators, Civil War swords, Colonel Sanders windvanes and giant faux corn ears, they take them to auction Friday night at Neal’s Auction House which is apparently a community ritual second only to Sunday church going. Dukes Of Haggle is produced by Mak Pictures for Discovery Channel. Mark Kadin, Will Ehbrecht, Ed Cunningham,...

When it comes to films, the relentless focus is mainly on the box office takings - and all the subsequent analysis.
These days, even the obsessive fanboys are studying cinema revenue as a way of showing their opinions are also the general consensus among audiences. If a release does very well, it must be a perfect movie, right? Well, no, that's not true at all. But that's a debate for another day.
For studios and production companies, though, earnings really matter because they're the ones who actually receive the cash. And they matter even more in this grim economy where people are being very careful about how they spend their money and piracy is still a persistent problem.
So how much does home video entertainment (that's DVD, Blu-ray and digital) count?
The short answer is: a lot. Here in the UK at least.

The president of Universal Pictures has urged British director/writer Richard Curtis to come up with a follow-up to hit 2003 romantic comedy Love Actually.
The British film, which focused on several different characters trying to find love, was a big hit at the box office, and now Universal chief Eddie Cunningham is hoping to convince the film's mastermind to pen a sequel.
He tells Britain's Mail on Sunday, "I think there should be a Love Actually 2. I'd give it a green light. I think many American movies try to emulate that brilliant format where the stories interweave and no one's on screen for more than six minutes, but only Richard has achieved it. It really makes you appreciate the beauty of his writing."
Love Actually boasted an all-star cast, including Hugh Grant, Colin Firth, Liam Neeson, Keira Knightley, Emma Thompson and Alan Rickman.

Veteran sportscaster Ron Franklin has been taken off from the Espn coverage of Fiesta Bowl after calling a female colleague "sweet baby" off air. The 68-year-old radio announcer also called sideline reporter Jeanine Edwards an "a**hole" when she objected to the sexist remark.
The incident took place Friday when Edwards was in a production meeting with Espn announcers Rod Gilmore and Ed Cunningham. She was talking with Gilmore about his wife being elected mayor of Alameda, California when Franklin joined in the conversation and said in a condescending tone, "Listen to me sweet baby, let me tell you something…"
When she told Franklin not to call her like that, Franklin replied, "Ok, then listen to me a**hole."
She told Game On! in an email that contrary to earlier reports, she wasn't the one who reported Franklin's behavior to the network authorities, but an unnamed colleague.

Longtime Espn announcer Ron Franklin and sideline reporter Jeannine Edwards probably won't be sharing the airwaves again anytime soon.
The sports network pulled Franklin from the Jan. 1 Saturday Fiesta Bowl radio broadcast after directing a sexist remark at his colleague.
Sports by Brooks reports that Franklin and Edwards were joined in a production meeting by fellow Espn announcers Ed Cunningham and Rod Gilmore. When the subject of Gilmore's wife being elected as Alameda, CA mayor was brought up, things got ugly.
Edwards, the token female of the group, chimed in to the conversation and Franklin replied in kind with: "Why don't you leave this to the boys, sweetcakes."
Remaining calm, she responded "don't call me sweetcakes, I don't like being talked to like that."
Franklin's answer? "Okay then, a-hole." What a classy dude.
Espn execs attempted to pull Franklin from that day's Chick-fil-a Bowl show (Friday Dec. 31) but due to the last minute notice,...

After traveling across Africa reporting for Fast Company, Richard Behar came home with a parasite eating away at his colon. Incredibly, he turned this ailment into the introduction to a six-part investigation that has gone on to win multiple awards--the latest is The Ed Cunningham Award for best magazine reporting from abroad from the Overseas Press Club of America. Behar's complete acceptance speech--which details the case of Entamoeba Histolytica that nearly killed the story, and sums up his experience touring the sub-Sahara--is now online and well worth a read.

London -- Phyllida Lloyd's "Mamma Mia! -- The Movie" has danced its way into the record books in the U.K. becoming the fastest selling DVD of all time after a day's trading.
Universal Pictures International Entertainment said the title posted unit sales of just short of 1.7 million, sinking its nearest rival "Titanic" which sold 1.1 million units on its first day on sale back in 1998 here.
The DVD success follows hot on the heels of what has become a boxoffice sensation for the musical movie, which features the hits of Swedish powerpop quartet Abba.
The title sung its way to just shy of 67 million pounds ($103 million) at the U.K. boxoffice, making it the highest grossing British movie of all time on these shores. It qualifies as British under the U.K. government’s cultural test.
Upie president Eddie Cunningham said the movie's DVD success here is being mirrored around the world.
