In the very first Video Zone (the behind-the-scenes featurette attached to most of Full Moon’s films throughout the ‘90s) that played after the end credits rolled on Puppet Master II, Charles Band likened the independent studio’s movies to comic books. He said that he hoped to create franchises out of many if not all of them, to follow along with the various adventures from movie-to-movie, to even pair up and cross over certain characters. The comparison was made very early on in Full Moon’s run; this was barely over a year after the release of Puppet Master, which had been the company’s debut feature. Yet it proved to be more true than any fan at the time could have imagined.
Many of those series continue to this day, many of them have had crossovers—whether it be title fights like Dollman vs. Demonic Toys, Gingerdead Man vs.

For decades, the mythology of the Men in Black has hovered over the UFO community. Legend says that investigating paranormal phenomena, spotting unidentified craft, or encountering alien beings often leads to a scary visit from pale men in black suits who threaten the witness to keep quiet about what they've seen. Many supposed eyewitnesses claim that these men are government agents or shape-shifting aliens tasked with keeping the existence of the paranormal a secret from humanity, while skeptics wrote them off as a silly fable created by a kooky, paranoid community. In 1997, a popular film offered a humorous take on the enigmatic Men in Black.
Between 1990 and 1991, Lowell Cunningham wrote "Men in Black," a dark, violent comic book series that focuses on the daily grind of government agents who exterminate supernatural beings and human eyewitnesses to keep the public ignorant. According to a 2022 interview with Inverse, after writing six issues of the comic,...

Following the smashing success of "Independence Day," Will Smith was red hot. The former "Fresh Prince of Bel-Air" star had successfully undergone the transformation from television star to film star, a hurdle many fail to overcome. Smith's next big project was "Men in Black," a sci-fi adventure film loosely based on the comic book series by Lowell Cunningham. Smith was to be the handsome but slightly out of his element leading man who would play alongside a more austere veteran actor. That co-star turned out to be Tommy Lee Jones.
At first glance, the combination of Smith and Jones seems like it could have been a slightly combustible one. Tommy Lee Jones is a serious, soft-spoken professional who had been known to have issues with co-stars. While Jones was working with Jim Carrey on 1995's "Batman Forever," Carrey reportedly said Jones told him to his face that he hated him.

Back in 2012, many were shocked that Men In Black III existed and yet the filmmakers managed to improve on the second and bring the series to a surprisingly warm and fun close…or so we thought. Truth be told, Men In Black: International had a hard time convincing naysayers when it was announced that original stars Will Smith and Tommy Lee Jones would not be returning, this unease was only strengthened when the first trailer hit and the film’s overall marketing felt under-powered. But could this new reboot/sequel find a story that is worth telling and set a new course for this series, based on Lowell Cunningham’s Malibu/Marvel comic? Sadly, lightening has not struck again.
The lack of the original stars is unavoidably felt in this film, which seems like a very distant cousin to the series as a result, but in Marvel studios’ Thor and Valkyrie,...

Sony’s “Men in Black: International” is heading for a disappointing $24 million opening weekend in the top spot at a mild North American box office, early estimates showed Friday.
The fourth iteration of the sci-fi comedy franchise is performing well under modest expectations, which had been in the $30 million range at 4,224 locations. “Men in Black: International” stars Chris Hemsworth and Tessa Thompson, replacing Will Smith and Tommy Lee Jones as the black-suited agents dealing with a baffling series of alien attacks against Earth.
New Line’s launch of its “Shaft” reboot is also showing little traction at multiplexes with Friday estimates coming in around $8 million at 2,952 sites, far below forecasts in the $16 million to $24 million range for the weekend. And Amazon’s widened release of its Mindy Kaling-Emma Thompson comedy “Late Night” was also falling flat at about $4 million at 2,218 venues.

The Summer of sequels marches on at the multiplex again this week (hey last Friday I reviewed two of ’em). Oh, this is a sci-fi spectacular which also has a slight Marvel connection. Men In Black was a comic book series created by Lowell Cunningham for an up and coming company called Malibu back in the “indie comics craze’ of the 1990s. They were so “on the rise”, that they caught the attention of Marvel who promptly bought them right up…swallowing up their line of titles and characters. Smart move, because Steven Spielberg’s Amblin grabbed the screen rights to that aforementioned series. That first flick in 1997 was a surprise smash prompting a wave of toys and a cartoon TV show, but not generating a “so-so” sequel until 2002 (this is a sporadic franchise). After ten years another sequel “completed” the “trilogy”. Well, not quite complete. There have been rumblings...

The earnest introduction of gender and migrant issues can’t save this space-invaders caper from CGI-dependent mediocrity
It’s time once again for what must now be called the Meh in Black, making another intensely tiresome and pointless reappearance, now with Liam Neeson and Chris Hemsworth on exceptionally charmless animatronic form in their dark suits, like Tussaud dummies with a contractual obligation to appear in a bad film. They are equally dead-eyed with or without the dark glasses. The MiB franchise – based on Lowell Cunningham’s 1990 comic book series about secret government agents battling aliens – was looking pretty moribund at the time of the third film in 2012, when Josh Brolin gamely joined the familiar duo of Tommy Lee Jones and Will Smith. Now they look like undertakers at their own funeral.

As Men In Black: International gives the franchise a soft reboot, we revisit the private battles of the first three films
All things considered, it's pretty astonishing that Men In Black: International seems to have come together in just over 18 months. Starring Chris Hemsworth and Tessa Thompson in the lead roles, F. Gary Gray's spin-off film was announced in 2017, started shooting last July, and arrives in cinemas this week. All films are difficult to make, but compared with each installment of the original trilogy starring Will Smith and Tommy Lee Jones, it sounds like it was a doddle to make.
Directed by Barry Sonnenfeld and executive produced by Steven Spielberg, the three films are loosely inspired by Malibu Comics' The Men In Black, a six-issue sci-fi series penned by Lowell Cunningham. To give you an idea of how long it took to bring to the screen,...

Chris Hemsworth and Tessa Thompson are the Men in Black for a new generation — and for a new geographical location. Sony released the “Men in Black: International” trailer on Thursday, and like original new recruit Agent Jay (Will Smith) once famously boasted, new agents M (Thompson) and H (Hemsworth) “make this look good.”
The mysterious Men in Black have always protected the Earth from the scum of the universe. In this London-based adventure, the new recruits tackle their biggest, most global threat to date: a mole in the Men in Black organization. That’s Sony’s description at least.

The development of a great film starts with a great script and storyline. A case in point is Men in Black, which is arguably one of the best media franchises, which is based on American author Lowell Cunningham’s comic book. The franchise is about a non-governmental organization working covertly to monitor and regulate alien activity on earth. It does that while still preventing the civilian population from learning about its activities. The Franchise includes three films so far, with Men in Black Reboot being the fourth film that is based on Cunningham’s work. In that regard, this is What We

But when K's life and the fate of the planet are put at stake, Agent J will have to travel back in time to put things right. J discovers that there are secrets to the universe that K never told him -- secrets that will reveal themselves as he teams up with the young Agent K (Josh Brolin) to save his partner, the agency, and the future of humankind. The third installment in the "Men in Black" series is in theaters now, returning the duo of Will Smith and Tommy Lee Jones to their familiar roles as Agents J and K, who patrol the Earth ensuring that alien visitors follow our laws, and that the general public never finds out about them.
What may not be as familiar to many people is that Agents J and K, and the agency they work for, originated not on the big screen as many may assume, but in the pages of a comic book series several years before the original "Men in Black" film was released. With that in mind, we're going to take a look back at the original "Men in Black" comics, and find out just how similar — or different — the source material may be from the films you know and love.

Directors: Barry Sonnenfeld. Writers: Lowell Cunningham and Etan Cohen. Cast: Will Smith, Tommy Lee Jones and Josh Brolin. The Men in Black are back in a third installment of this dated franchise product. When the last film was released on 2002, a ten-year wait is enough to kill any idea for a series of films, and unlike another Sony product (namely Spider-man), the anxiety for another film is as exciting as watching paint dry. Both products are better off retired than given a fresh coat. While Spider-man can easily doff off his red and blue and don the black, leading up to another Venom storyline, at least that is far more exciting than in Men in Black 3 offers. This movie sequel is mostly rehashes of old ideas. In the many years that Agents K (Tommy Lee Jones) and J (Will Smith) have spent protecting the planet Earth, they still do not understand each other.

Although it's safe to assume that Earth still needs protecting from alien scum, after Men in Black 2 no one had been particularly eager to find out what else they had been up to. However, with Sony in desperate need of another summer blockbuster, we all knew it was only a matter of time before a third installment would be willed into existence. So now here it is: Will Smith and Tommy Lee Jones are back, along with director Barry Sonnenfeld, but are they all merely going through the motions? With...
