Among the new productions on Broadway this spring is a revival of the classic musical “Cabaret,” starring Eddie Redmayne. In 2014 he starred as Stephen Hawking in director James Marsh‘s biopic “The Theory of Everything.” His performance won him an Oscar for Best Actor (making him the eighth youngest winner in that category at age 33), overcoming stiff competition from Michael Keaton, the star of the Best Picture winner of that year, “Birdman.” How did Redmayne pull through? Here are five reasons.
1. The industry felt he came into his own
Prior to “The Theory of Everything,” Redmayne was a rising star. In 2010 he won a Tony for his Broadway debut starring opposite Alfred Molina in John Logan‘s play “Red.” He went on to get more prominent film roles where critics, audiences and the industry started to take notice of him. Among them were Simon Curtis‘s 2011 Oscar-nominated biopic “My Week with Marilyn...

Some apotheosis of film culture has been reached with Freddy Got Fingered‘s addition to the Criterion Channel. Three years after we interviewed Tom Green about his consummate film maudit, it’s appearing on the service’s Razzie-centered program that also includes the now-admired likes of Cruising, Heaven’s Gate, Querelle, and Ishtar; the still-due likes of Under the Cherry Moon; and the more-contested Gigli, Swept Away, and Nicolas Cage-led Wicker Man. In all cases it’s an opportunity to reconsider one of the lamest, thin-gruel entities in modern culture.

Downton Abbey: A New Era, the second movie to the Downton Abbey movies based on the Downton Abbey TV series, premiered earlier this year to critical acclaim from fans of the original drama. The movie was directed by Simon Curtis, who had previously worked on films like Cranford and David Copperfield. According to Rotten Tomatoes, the movie’s plot is as follows: “The much-anticipated cinematic return of the global phenomenon reunites the beloved cast as they go on a grand journey to the South of France to uncover the mystery of the Dowager Countess’ newly inherited villa.” A critique from Screen Hub wrote about the

Downton Abbey: A New Era, the sequel to the 2019 film Downton Abbey, both written by Julian Fellowes, hit theaters last May 29, 2022. In the film, the Crawley family travels to the South of France to uncover the mystery of the dowager countess’s newly inherited villa. The story is set in 1922, and Simon Curtis directed the film. The cast includes Hugh Bonneville, Elizabeth McGovern, Michelle Dockery, Maggie Smith, Laura Carmichael, Imelda Staunton, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Ed Speleers, and Tuppence Middleton. It may be this year’s ‘comfort food’ film but Julian Fellowes’ second theatrical sequel to his revered long-running TV show is quality goods — and may be better than the first one. Almost every actor is back, seemingly pleased as plum puddings to repeat their roles as either landed nobility or downstairs staff. The storyline ties a final bow on some characters and plot lines, and in a far more pleasing way than we thought possible. Even casual fans of the franchise ought to be charmed.

When your movie features a subtitle like "A New Era," I think it's safe to say that it opens the possibility of more "Downton Abbey" on the horizon. The second theatrical feature film from series creator Julian Fellowes ("The Gilded Age") and director Simon Curtis ("My Week With Marilyn") sees the aristocratic Crawleys scrambling after learning that the Dowager Countess (Maggie Smith) has inherited a villa in the south of France. I had thought it was a vibrant return to this world that gave some legacy characters closure, while introducing a new path for others.

Where "Downton Abbey: The Motion Picture" felt like a welcome reunion among old friends in relatively the same roles that we last saw them, "Downton Abbey: A New Era" feels like a sense of progression for the aristocratic Crawley family and their downstairs workers, as the times, they are once again a-changing. As one half of the charming ensemble split up to investigate the Dowager's past in the south of France, movie stars, bright lights, and unforeseen production troubles await at Downton. I enjoyed the previous film quite a bit, but "A New Era" really plays up the escapist...

Downton Abbey: A New Era, Focus Features’ second feature spin-off from the phenomenally successful TV series, jitterbugged its way into cinemas earlier this year.
Bringing back the original ensemble of regulars, plus a few new additions in Dominic West, Hugh Dancy, Laura Haddock and Nathalie Baye, the film — directed by Simon Curtis — ramped up the high-society hi-jinx, with sumptuous weddings, luxurious trips to the south of France and the rather meta inclusion of a silent era Hollywood film being shot in Downton itself.

“Downton Abbey: A New Era” has made its debut on Digital, and to mark the occasion, we’ve got an early look at one of the bonus features included on the home video release.
The video above goes behind the scenes of the sequel to show the challenge of making a movie about a film crew making a silent movie at Downton Abbey, which is a major plot point in the film. Director Simon Curtis explains in the clip how tricky it was to fit all the cameras in a room for the silent film within the film in addition to the real cameras needed to actually make “A New Era.”
Additionally, actor Robert James-Collier, who plays Thomas in the franchise, explains why his character would not be a great fit for the silent era.
“I couldn’t be in a silent movie, I’ll tell you why,” James-Collier says in the clip.

The “Downton Abbey” saga continues in the sequel film “Downton Abbey: A New Era,” which finds the cadre of characters coming up against Hollywood itself when a film production sets up shop at Downton.
After six series on television, creator Julian Fellowes took his upstairs/downstairs story of the goings-on at a sprawling English estate to the big screen with the aptly titled 2019 film “Downton Abbey.” The story continues to unfold in the sequel, “Downton Abbey: A New Era” which takes place in 1928 – nearly two decades after the series first began.
Given the popularity of the show and now film franchise, many may be wondering what kinds of viewing options are available for “Downton Abbey 2” and when or if it might be streaming. Everything you need to know about the new film is outlined below.

Box Office: ‘Downton Abbey 2’ Starts Strong With 16 Million as ‘Doctor Strange’ Reigns Supreme Again
The Crawley family still has the royal touch at the box office. “Downton Abbey: A New Era,” a sequel to the big-screen continuation of the beloved British television show, captured 16 million from 3,815 North American theaters in its domestic debut. Though down slightly from initial projections, those returns mark an encouraging start at a time when older audiences have been selective about going to the movies.
There had been understandable concern about the second “Downton Abbey” in terms of commercial prospects, and not because long-time fans of the series had tired of devouring the onscreen palace intrigue and class-system drama. Other than “House of Gucci” and James Bond sequel “No Time to Die,” many pandemic-era films catering to adults (such as Steven Spielberg’s “West Side Story” remake” and the Will Smith sports drama “King Richard”) struggled to sell tickets despite positive reviews. So it’s no small feat that nearly...

The “Doctor” is still in, as Marvel’s latest film continues to lead the box office against some very proper competition.
“Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness” added another 8.5 million to its box office total on Friday, bumping its cumulative gross up to 318 million. Meanwhile, “Downton Abbey: A New Era” is estimated to end the weekend with 18 million.
“Downton Abbey: A New Era,” the second film spin-off of the beloved U.K. series, raked in a solid 1 million in previews on Thursday from 3,300 theaters. But its weekend estimates won’t be enough to dethrone “Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness,” which is looking to top the domestic box office charts for a third weekend. Alex Garland’s horror film “Men” also opens this weekend, but looks to have a soft start with only 1,411,853 from 1,800 screens on Friday.
The first “Downton Abbey” film, released in 2019, grossed more than 190 million at the global box office.

This weekend, audiences returned to the grand Grantham estate in “Downton Abbey: A New Era.” The movie brings the characters to 1928, the year when silent motion pictures transitioned into talkies. There’s also plenty of new characters and some farewells to those long-established within the popular TV series.
But while this second movie is only just in theaters, it’s impossible not to wonder if a third movie is in the offing, especially considering screenwriter Julian Fellowes’ recent television success with another group of haves and have-nots in the HBO series “The Gilded Age.”
Fellowes, while talking to IndieWire during the recent press tour for “Downton Abbey: A New Era,” said he certainly wouldn’t discount another movie but much will depend on timing. “These things become clearer over time, if there is still a demand for more ‘Downton,’ and the actors, if enough of them want to do it.

Chicago – Patrick McDonald of HollywoodChicago.com appears on “The Morning Mess” with Dan Baker on Wbgr-fm on May 19th, reviewing “Downtown Abbey: A New Era,” the second film version of the mega-popular BBC/PBS series, in theaters beginning May 20th.
Rating: 4.0/5.0
It’s the continuing adventures of the Crawleys (Hugh Bonneville and Elizabeth McGovern), the wealthy English proprietors and their servants of Downton Abbey. In this second film based from the TV series, the new era has begun, as the Crawleys have found that Countess Violet, Aka Granny (Maggie Smith) has inherited a French villa through mysterious circumstances. At the same time, a film crew arrives at Downton, to shoot a silent film that halfway through production has to convert to a talkie, aided by Lady Mary (Michelle Dockery). The Crawleys head to France with loyal butler Carson (Jim Carter), while the film crew rolls on.

Highly anticipated Downton Abbey: A New Era made 1.050 million in Thursday previews that began at 7 p.m. at more than 3,300 theaters. It is Focus Features’ widest ever U.S. release and one that comes with a weight of responsibility as the film to finally catapult older demos back into theaters. Focus Features distribution chief Lisa Bunnell recently promised cinema owners it would. “We have our own superheroes,” she said at CinemaCon.
Based on the smash series created by Julian Fellowes, it’s grossed over 30 million internationally. It premiered in the U.K. and Ireland April 29, launching into the top spot across 746 locations (second-widest release after No Time To Die). It’s certified Fresh on Rotten Tomatoes with a 98 Audience score and 83 Critics score. Tracking to a mid-to-low teens opening.
This is the second cinematic outing of the phenomenon that aired for six seasons Stateside on PBS (2011-2020) and reunites the full cast.

“Downton Abbey: A New Era,” the follow-up to the 2019 feature film and the latest in the story of the aristocratic Crawley family established in the hit series, earned 1.05 million in its Thursday box office previews from 3,300 screens. “A New Era” opens on 3,815 screens this weekend, which is the widest opening for a Focus Features film in the specialty distributor’s history.
There are high hopes that “Downton Abbey: A New Era” will be the film that can attract older audiences back to movie theaters in earnest for the first time since the pandemic began, and by grossing over 30 million thus far internationally, including strong showings in the UK and Ireland, those hopes may yet be realized.
Independent analysts say the film has a decent chance of reaching 20 million at the domestic box office, while the studio is projecting a more conservative opening in the low to mid-teens. Either would be...

After two weeks as the #1 movie at the box office, Marvel Studios’ “Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness” faces another anticipated sequel, as well as the new genre movie from a respected filmmaking auteur. Read on for your weekly box office preview.
On Friday, Focus Features releases “Downton Abbey: A New Era,” the sequel to its 2019 hit, which itself was a continuation of the popular Emmy-winning PBS series created by Julian Fellowes, the Oscar-winning writer of 2001’s “Gosford Park.”
Fellowes’ original series about a well-to-do British family in the early 1920s starred Hugh Bonneville, Elizabeth McGovern, Michelle Dockery, Dan Stevens and Dame Maggie Smith, running from 2010 through 2015 for six seasons. The 2019 movie continued the story with a visit to Downton from the King and Queen, and it was a pretty major release for Focus, opening with 31 million in 3,079 theaters and sticking around through the fall. It would gross 96 million just in North America,...

Update, writethru: On a weekend we could term “the calm before the Strange,” there was nevertheless sustained holdover business at the international box office, and a new entry in the form of Universal/Focus’ Downton Abbey: A New Era.
In general this pre-Doctor Strange In The Multiverse Of Madness session saw family play continue its reign as Warner Bros’ Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets Of Dumbledore and Paramount’s Sonic The Hedgehog 2 each notched new milestones — both crossing 300M worldwide — while Universal/DreamWorks Animation’s The Bad Guys topped 100M with help from the No. 1 domestic opening.
But let’s start with the Crawley family of Downton 2. The Simon Curtis-directed return to the Grantham estate — and far flung locales this time around — sailed off with 9.3M from 33 markets, logging No. 1s in the UK and Australia. In the former, the ensemble pic set the table with 3.8M from 746 locations — the second-widest release ever there,...

Exclusive: When Downton Abbey first burst on the scene in 2010, the Julian Fellowes-created series quickly drew audiences and made headlines for its unique spin on the traditional British period drama. This was not your grandmother’s upstairs/downstairs look at the upper crust, rather its take on the aristocracy gave contemporary audiences characters and storylines they could relate to with strong women, quotable dialogue and tons of heart.
Now, 12 years later comes Focus Features’ Downton Abbey: A New Era, the feature sequel to the 2019 hit film that notched 238 million in worldwide box office and became the studio’s highest-grossing title ever domestically. But A New Era isn’t just a sequel, it also establishes Focus’ first bona fide franchise — a rare beast in the specialty arena. It’s also a sign of the way the company, which is celebrating its 20th anniversary, is thinking about its future.

“Hollywood is the ultimate dream factory … and I need dreams as much as the next man,” says Mr Molesley (Kevin Doyle) in Downton Abbey: A New Era. It’s a line that sums up the mission of the TV series’ second cinematic outing: to continue the “dream factory” tradition. And so the wishes of many a familiar character are granted over the course of two hours — along with plenty of drama.
Written and co-produced by creator Julian Fellowes and directed by Simon Curtis (My Week with Marilyn), the sequel opens in 1928, with the wedding of Tom Branson (Allen Leech) and Lucy Smith (Tuppence Middleton). It’s a chance to reunite major characters in their finery, further blurring the boundaries between the “upstairs” and “downstairs.”

“Downton Abbey: A New Era” is bookended by a wedding and a funeral. In between, a good deal happens: Babies are born and paternities questioned, long-simmering romances clinched and fresh ones set to bloom; an excursion takes a fraction of the family to France while a film crew keeps the rest of them busy back home. It all adds up to rather more than audiences of 2019’s standalone “Downton Abbey” feature must have expected, if only because the earlier film seemed conspicuously uninterested in starting anything new.
That’s the trouble with television — from a film critic’s perspective, at least. Movies are by their nature story-obsessed — plot-driven locomotives, compelled by conflict, engineered to reach a tidy resolution of some kind within two hours or so. On TV, on the other hand, once a small-screen world has been established, it’s designed to remain open-ended from episode to episode and season to season,...

After teasing fans with quick glimpses over the past several months, Focus Features today revealed the official full trailer for Downton Abbey: A New Era. The follow-up to 2019’s feature adaptation of the beloved TV series appears to have two major plot strands, one involving a mystery and the other a movie; there’s also a wedding afoot. Check out the trailer above.
In the trailer we see the Crawley family head from the Grantham estate down to the South of France, where Maggie Smith’s Dowager Countess has inherited a villa from someone in her “mysterious past.” Her rather shocked relatives wonder who this mystery man was and whether Granny ever thought to turn down the house, “Do I look as if I’d turn down a villa, in the South of France?,” she quips in trademark fashion.

Focus Features has pushed back the release of “Downton Abbey: A New Era” two months and the sequel will now be released on May 20, the company announced Wednesday.
The sequel was previously scheduled for release on March 18. The film will be released in the U.K. by Universal on April 29.
While plot details for the film have been sparse, writer Julian Fellowes told People that Lady Mary continues to run Downton as the mother of the next Earl of Grantham.
“As we know from the last film, Mary may not be the titular head of the household, but she is effectively running the show. We take that further,” Fellowes said. “We’re trying to mark the change — the fact that Crawleys of Downton are nearly in the 1930s, which is merely the beginning of the modern world.”

Downton Abbey: A New Era is a movie that could truly bring older adults back to cinemas, and Focus Features, Universal International and Carnival Films are going to put the title in the best place possible in hopes that Covid eases. The companies have moved the sequel from its original March 18 release date to May 20 in the U.S. and April 29 in the UK.
In the U.S, Downton Abbey 2 moves to a weekend where the only other major studio wide release is Warner Bros’ family animated film DC Super Pets. The sequel’s move from the March 18-20 weekend leaves STX’s Guy Ritchie title Operation Fortune: Ruse de guerre as the only studio wide release that weekend. Warner Bros’ The Batman on March 4 is expected to do $100M-plus business, and there aren’t any wide release movies programmed during the weekend of March 11-13.
