There isn’t a single problem that Scorpion‘s Walter O’Brien can’t solve. Well, if you don’t count the whole “unable to process emotions” thing.
On the CBS procedural, which debuted Monday, Walter (Body of Proof’s Elyes Gabel) is one of the five smartest people in the world, and he’s surrounded himself with other highly intelligent outcasts who are just scraping by in the real world: Sylvester Dodd, a mind-bogglingly fast mathematician; Toby Curtis, a Harvard-trained behaviorist; and Happy Quinn, an engineering whiz (who also has an affinity for punching people in the mouth).

Scorpion, inspired by a true story, is a high-octane drama about eccentric genius Walter O?Brien and his team of brilliant misfits who comprise the last line of defense against complex, high-tech threats of the modern age. As Homeland Security?s new think tank, O?Brien?s ?Scorpion? team includes Toby Curtis, an expert behaviorist who can read anyone; Happy Quinn, a mechanical prodigy; and Sylvester Dodd, a statistics guru. Pooling their extensive technological knowledge to solve mind-boggling predicaments amazes federal agent Cabe Gallo, who shares a harrowing history with O?Brien. However, while this socially awkward group is comfortable with each other?s humor and quirks, life outside their circle confounds them, so they rely on Paige Dineen, who has a young, gifted son, to translate the world for them. At last, these nerdy masterminds have found the perfect job: a place where they can apply their exceptional brainpower to solve the nation?...

WELLINGTON, New Zealand-- In the latest episode to rock Maori broadcasting, the chairman of funding agency Te Mangai Paho resigned Wednesdayafter official revelations of corruption and mismanagement. Toby Curtis, the father of actor Cliff Curtis (Whale Rider, Collateral Damage), stepped down as chairman after a treasury report concluded he and chief executive Trevor Moeke "demonstrated poor judgment" over a conflict of interest involving a manager who's a convicted fraudster. Question marks also hang over Moeke's future as well as that of the agency, which was set up 10 years ago to promote Maori music, TV and radio. Last year, it allocated NZ$30 million ($17.4 million) of government money to Maori TV and NZ$10 million ($5.8 million) to Maori radio. Maori Affairs Minister Parekura Horomia said there aren't "systemic" problems at Te Mangai Paho but that he is "thankful" for Curtis' resignation. The episode follows last year's conviction of the newly appointed chief executive of the Maori Television Service, Canadian John Davy, for fraud and a funding scandal involving executives of MTS' defunct forerunner, Aotearo Television, in 1997.
