Thirty-five years down the line from the release of the 1988 cult classic Killer Klowns from Outer Space (watch it Here), fans of the film have access to a whole lot of tie-in merchandise, have made their way through Killer Klowns-themed mazes at Halloween Horror Nights events, and have a video game to look forward to… but we still haven’t seen the sequel the film’s creators have been anxious to make for decades. Now, speaking with SFX magazine, Killer Klowns from Outer Space director Stephen Chiodo has revealed that he’s hoping to bring the sequel idea to life as an eight episode mini-series!
Chiodo told SFX (with thanks to Coming Soon for sharing the text), “My goal is to do an eight-part miniseries for streamers. We’ve got a great concept that continues the story of our main characters. We’ll follow a new group of teenagers...

Did you know that Alfred Hitchcock made a film starring Shirley MacLaine and John Forsythe? Did you know he made a broad comedy? Did you know he shot an entire film in Craftsbury, Vermont?! Well, I guess the last one isn't so shocking. And "Mr. and Mrs. Smith", Hitchcock's Carole Lombard-starring screwball comedy from 1941, is quite well-known and liked.
But I'm not talking about "Mr. and Mrs. Smith." I'm talking about the other comedy made by the master of suspense. 1955's "The Trouble With Harry" represented several firsts for Hitchcock -- his first dark comedy, the first film he made after obtaining American citizenship (he had been living and working in the country for 16 years by that point), and the first film he made after commencing production on "Alfred Hitchcock Presents." That series quickly became popular with audiences and was cemented in short order as an American institution,...

The 1986 horror comedy House, directed by Steve Miner from a screenplay by Ethan Wiley (based on a story by Fred Dekker), has a solid cult following to this day. The 1987 standalone sequel House II: The Second Story (watch it Here), which was written and directed by Wiley (again from a story by Dekker), has a less positive reputation than its predecessor. But there are fans out there who enjoy House II even more than the first House – and I happen to be one of those fans. So I’m very happy to see that JoBlo’s own Lance Vlcek has decided to celebrate House II: The Second Story, which has been a favorite of mine since childhood, with a new video that digs into The Best Scene in the movie! You can check it out in the embed above.

Ghoulies is not the Gremlins rip-off its reputation suggests. The two films were in production at the same time, but budgetary issues delayed the release of Ghoulies. Although it likely benefited from Gremlins‘ success, the similarities begin and end with diminutive monsters. Ghoulies II actually shares more in common with Gremlins, as the first Ghoulies leans more — arguably too much — into the fantasy realm.
From producer Charles Band’s Empire Pictures, the 1985 horror-comedy is directed by Luca Bercovici (Rockula) from a script he co-wrote with producer Jefery Levy. At just over 80 minutes, the film doesn’t waste time trying to make sense of its messy plot.
When Jonathan Graves (Peter Liapis) inherits an old manor from the father he never knew, he does what any 20-something with newfound freedom would do: throw a party. Something wills Jonathan to perform a ritual from an old book he finds among his father’s occult paraphernalia,...

Plot: An alcoholic and drug addict, Richard is taken into the wilderness to detox – but once they’re out in the woods, he and his group of friends are attacked by a madman.

Nine years ago, Cortney Palm and Hutch Dano starred in Zombeavers, a horror comedy that got a good amount of attention because – as the title gives away – it happened to be about zombie beavers. Now Palm and Dano have reunited for the horror film As Certain as Death, which will be receiving a VOD release in the United States on July 11th. The trailer for the film can be seen in the embed above.
The feature directorial debut of Dano, who also wrote the script, As Certain as Death has the following synopsis: Desperate to help her addict boyfriend Richard, Kayla enlists the help of her sister and friends to stage an intervention, but the first step is finding Richard. Kayla documents their search for Richard among the allies and homeless encampments of Los Angeles, finally succeeding in finding him high in an alley. With the additional help of two friends,...

There’s more Killer Klowns from Outer Space merchandise heading our way! A couple days ago, we heard that Spirit Halloween stores are teaming up with Funko for a limited edition Funko Pop! figure – called the Killer Klowns Movie Moment Funko – that will only be available in select Spirit stores and on the Spirit website. But that isn’t the only new Killer Klowns Funko POPs we’ll be seeing this year. Entertainment Earth is now accepting pre-orders for Funko Pop! figures based on the Fatso and Baby Klown characters. Images of these figures can be seen at the bottom of this article.

It seems crazy to me that Spirit Halloween stores are apparently having great success selling merchandise related to the 1988 cult classic Killer Klowns from Outer Space (watch it Here), and yet we still haven’t heard that the long-awaited sequel has been given a greenlight. But while we continue to wait for that sequel (and look forward to the video game), Spirit Halloween has now announced that they’ve teamed up with Funko to create a limited edition Funko Pop! that will only be available in select Spirit stores and on the Spirit website. This figure, which is being produced to celebrate the 35th anniversary of Killer Klowns from Outer Space, “brings to life the iconic scene where Bibbo and Shorty pop out of a pizza box and zap an unsuspecting victim with their cotton candy gun.”

Last week, we shared the news that the 1985 creature feature Ghoulies (watch it Here) is getting a Blu-ray and 4K Uhd release, courtesy of Mvd Rewind Collection, on September 12th. Now we can confirm that Mvd Rewind Collection is also giving the 1988 sequel Ghoulies II (watch that one Here) a new Blu-ray and DVD release on that same date. The company is hoping to give the film a 4K Uhd release as well, but they can’t say for sure when that is going to happen.

For decades, the 1988 film Killer Klowns from Outer Space (watch it Here) was a little-known cult film that never got the sequel it deserved… and while it still hasn’t received the sequel it deserves, it’s clear that its cult following has gotten quite large. Spirit Halloween stores are packed with Killer Klowns items, a Killer Klowns haunted house was part of Universal Studios’ Halloween Horror Nights, Trick or Treat Studios created Killer Klowns action figures, and there’s a video game on the way. Now Spirit Halloween has started taking orders for one of the most impressive collectible display items a die-hard Killer Klowns from Outer Space fan could get their hands on: a 6 foot cotton candy cocoon, complete with the face of a victim sticking out of the cotton candy!

Actor James Arness became the face of Gunsmoke and the Western genre on television. The show ran for an incredible 20 seasons, cementing the show in the medium’s history forever as one of the longest-running series out there. Arness carried a commanding presence on the screen, and it wasn’t only because of his height. In one specific episode, the production made him look smaller in order to make a villain appear bigger.

Gunsmoke featured Arness in the leading role of U.S. Marshal Matt Dillon. His real-life height certainly made him stand out from the pack, as he stood at 6’7″ tall. Arness started out in theater before moving over into feature films and television, but he had some difficulty making it work in Hollywood. No leading men wanted to work alongside him because his...

Richard Widmark reportedly used his clout to amp up this revisionist western, but the result seems forced at best, and hampered by Universal’s TV-grade production values. The sober screenplay brings in good ideas but the execution can’t quite hold its own with the more progressive westerns of the genre-changing years 1968-’69. A cast of familiar faces makes much of it look fresh: Carroll O’Connor’s venal saloon keeper steals the show, while interesting casting gives us Lena Horne as Widmark’s romantic partner.

This expensive production was dismissed as a flop, and literary critics scorned it for diluting the famed novel by Theodore Dreiser. But it plays well now: William Wyler gives star Laurence Olivier what may be his best film acting role ever. Jennifer Jones’ title part suffers from script changes that censor and sentimentalize Dreiser’s intentions, but the film remains a shattering tragedy. Eddie Albert co-stars in one of his first dramatic roles; this encoding includes a scene dropped from the original release.

John Massari, who composed the score for the 1988 cult classic horror comedy Killer Klowns from Outer Space (watch it Here), has returned to create the music for the upcoming Killer Klowns from Outer Space video game, which will be released for PC, Playstation 5, Playstation 4, Xbox Series, and Xbox One sometime in 2023. Our friends at Bloody Disgusting were told, “This blood-pumping track pays homage to the original ‘Klown March’ recorded in 1987, while also adding darker, unexpected modern twists to its structure.”

Back in 1988, the Chiodo Brothers brought us the cult classic horror comedy Killer Klowns from Outer Space (watch it Here) – and pretty much ever since, they have been hoping to get the chance to make a sequel to the film. A couple months ago, it was announced that a video game based on the 1988 cult classic Killer Klowns from Outer Space (watch it Here) will be released for PC, Playstation 5, Playstation 4, Xbox Series, and Xbox One sometime in 2023. That video can be viewed at the bottom of this article.
When the announcement was made, it was said that the video game maps would be “inventive, but faithful recreations of iconic locations from the Killer Klowns from Outer Space movie.” The video below does a great job of showing just how faithful these location recreations are.

While there’s still no indication that we’re going to be getting a Killer Klowns from Outer Space 2 any time soon, it sure seems like the 1988 cult classic Killer Klowns from Outer Space (watch it Here) is more popular than ever now. Good news, of a sort. The US is apparently not the only country having problems with cults. The Russian TV miniseries “Sekta” (“The Sect”) dramatizes the emotional and physical brutality of what cults can do to the gullible, and how hard it can be for others to rescue and de-program the victims. Powerful, if unpleasant, to witness, yet seemingly insightful and realistic about short and long-term effects on all touched by such situations.
The protagonist is a nurse, Lilya (Svetlana Khodchenkova), who helps a trio of parent-hired freelancers after they’ve managed to retrieve an unwilling Nika (Anastasiya Chistyakova) from her large, violent cult. Kino-Lorber has released a Blu-Ray edition of the 1959 musical comedy, Never Steal Anything Small starring James Cagney, Shirley Jones, Roger Smith and Cara Williams. If it doesn’t sound all that familiar it’s because this movie is a very odd duck. A musical without songs and dances, and a Damon Runyon type plot with characters that get a little nasty at times.
James Cagney, in his final musical performance, plays Jake MacIllaney, a crooked dockworker and steward for the local stevedore’s union in New York City. He cheats, he schemes and he occasionally embezzles funds, but he is somehow still a lovable chap who is well liked by the rank and file. He dreams of becoming the union president and hires a straight-laced lawyer, Dan Cabot (Roger Smith), to help him keep one step ahead of the law.

Once upon a time, MGM launched a big spectacle Western remake with the top star Glenn Ford and the bright import Maria Schell — and then second-guessed the whole production, cutting back on everything so severely that director Anthony Mann ankled the set for Spain and El Cid. The storytelling is a mess — after starting big, the show soon falls into pieces. But many of individual scenes and set pieces are exemplary, especially Mann’s re-run of the Oklahoma Land Rush, staged in Arizona and augmented by classy special effects. The large cast rounds up some big talent — Mercedes McCambridge, Russ Tamblyn — to tell Edna Ferber’s multi-generational story about ambition, intolerance and dreams of glory on the frontier.

Did star James Stewart and director Anthony Mann corner the market on upscale ‘A’ ’50s westerns? This beauty sends Stewart, Ruth Roman and Corrine Calvet on a breezy trek over a Canadian glacier, with Walter Brennan as a folksy, ditsy sidekick — not very original but endearing. John McIntire saves the day as a charmingly malevolent self-appointed Judge Roy Bean-type swindler and murderer — he’s so hilariously evil, even Stewart’s character is amused. The special edition has two aspect ratio versions, a full commentary and two film history featurette-docus.

The Anthony Mann – James Stewart crowd-pleaser now comes to Region A Blu-ray. With its bright Technicolor hues, it’s the wagon train movie fans remember first after Red River. Stewart is a good guy with a dark background who tries to atone by helping some settlers. The thorn in his side is an unreformed former outlaw played by Arthur Kennedy in high style. Also shining bright is everyone’s favorite Universal contract player, Julie (Julia) Adams.

Wow — a good Audie Murphy movie. Clair Huffaker’s screenplay should take credit, as well as the workmanlike direction of former Hitchcock assistant Herbert Coleman. Even John Saxon comes off well, plus the film can boast good work from favorites Zohra Lampert and Vic Morrow, and fine support from Rodolfo Acosta, Royal Dano and Lee Van Cleef.

In the early ’80s, small creatures called Mogwais forever changed the horror comedy landscape. The year was 1984 and Joe Dante’s Gremlins (written by Chris Columbus) became a smash hit for Warner Bros., bringing in over $153 million in North America alone and securing its spot as the number four highest grossing film of the year. The movie was a genre bender, opting for black comedy that lightly dipped its toes into horror waters (despite the warning to Not Get Them Wet!). These little guys were cute and cuddly (until you fed them after midnight), and were so immensely popular, they launched ginormous merchandising and marketing campaigns and spawned a cluster of knock-off movies all centered around small, weird, cutesy-gross little creatures. Ghoulies II was one of those movies.
Mostly unconnected to the original film, Ghoulies II follows the pesky little toilet monsters as they wreak havoc in an amusement park funhouse called Satan’s Den.

The second Anthony Mann / James Stewart western displays excellent direction and impressive Technicolor location photography high in the high mountains of Oregon. A matinee staple, it delivers everything — Stewart’s mostly good hero and Arthur Kennedy’s mostly bad hero spar and tangle and eventually fight to the death near the timber line. Handsome Rock Hudson receives prime billing for flashing his ‘Dazzledent’ smile.

Witness the ‘fifties transformation of the femme fatale, from scheming murderess to self-deluding social climber. A key title in the development of the Film Noir, 1957’s Crime of Passion shows how much the style had departed from the dark romanticism and expressive visuals of the previous decade. The best mid-’50s noirs strike a marvelously cynical and existentially bleak attitude regarding crime and society.

[Editor's Note: A version of this retrospective originally appeared in the September 2014 issue of Deadly Magazine.] With House II: The Second Story, the vastly underrated sequel written and directed by Ethan Wiley (who also wrote the screenplay for the original House), New World Pictures introduced audiences to a whole new world filled with unexpected frights and adventures with an Old West twist. The sequel was released in late August of 1987 and took a decidedly left turn away from the more straightforward house of horrors style seen in Steve Miner’s original film, instead favoring a tone that was much more light-hearted, fun-spirited, and far more family friendly.
For the uninitiated, House II follows a young man named Jesse (Arye Gross), who inherits a strange house from the parents who gave him up for adoption when he was just an infant. As he begins to settle into his new dwelling with the help of his girlfriend, Kate (Lar Park Lincoln), his best pal, Charlie (Jonathan Stark), and Charlie’s aspiring musician girlfriend,...

Twin Peaks Recap is a weekly column by Keith Uhlich covering David Lynch and Mark Frost's limited, 18-episode continuation of the Twin Peaks television series. What's an FBI Special Agent to do after being locked away for 25 years in unearthly purgatory? Episodes three and four of Mark Frost and David Lynch's revived Twin Peaks, which aired on Showtime this past Sunday in a two-hour block (aside from September's two-part finale, it's all single, hour-long episodes from hereon out), follow our besuited, Black Lodge-incarcerated hero Dale Cooper (Kyle MacLachlan) as he reintegrates into modern terrestrial society. So this is basically Peaks doing Rectify, just with a sterile death row replaced by an infernal hellscape out of Clive Barker. Or David Lynch, really. What's becoming more and more evident as the new Peaks progresses is that the series is, in large part, a repository for Lynch's subconscious, past and present.

Growing up, I was a big fan of both House and House II: The Second Story, so as you can imagine, Arrow Video’s recent House: Two Stories Blu-ray collection was right up my proverbial alley. Both films look better here than they did on DVD (which is how I’ve been viewing them for years now), the new retrospective featurettes do a great job of diving deep into both movies, and the other supplemental materials included are a welcome blast from the past. For fans who are on the fence about adding House: Two Stories to your home media collections, I can emphatically say this set is well worth the investment.
In House (1986), we meet famed writer Roger Cobb (William Katt), a Vietnam vet with a slumping career and a marriage that has hit the skids after his son disappeared while visiting Roger’s aunt Elizabeth in her gothic abode one fateful day.

I have a back file of reader notes asking for a Blu-ray for John Huston’s Moby Dick, and more pointedly, wondering what will be done with its strange color scheme. I wasn’t expecting miracles, but this new Twilight Time disc should make the purists happy – it has approximated the film’s original, heavily muted color scheme.

Happy Birthday to one of We Are Movie Geeks favorite stars. Clint Eastwood was born on this day in 1930, making him 86 years old. The actor and two-time Oscar winning director hasn’t let his age slow him down a bit. Sully, his new movie as a director, opens in September.
We posted a list in 2011 of his ten best directorial efforts Here
Clint Eastwood has appeared in 68 films in his six (!) decades as an actor, and here, according to We Are Movie Geeks, are his ten best:
Honorable Mention: Honkytonk Man
By the 1980s, Clint Eastwood was one of Hollywood’s most bankable stars. With his own production company, directorial skills, and economic clout, Eastwood was able to make smaller, more personal films. A perfect example is the underrated Honkytonk Man, which also happens to be one of Eastwood’s finest performances.

You know the one, he’d have the craziest VHS tapes you’d ever seen – Class of Nuke Em High, Black Roses, The Toxic Avenger, Ghoulies… all films that sold themselves on artwork alone.

Though it’s often remembered as one of the many Gremlins rip-offs of the ‘80s, Ghoulies has its origins in 1983 (or a year before Gremlins hit screens), when producer Charles Band and creature effects guru Stan Winston dreamed up a film called Beasties about a bunch of small creatures wreaking havoc on a group of young people. It underwent some changes on the way to the screen: rather than Band directing as originally planned, the film would be helmed by actor Luca Bercovici, who had previously worked for Band on 1982’s Parasite. Stan Winston would not design the creatures, either; those duties fell to John Carl Buechler. And despite what its title might suggest, there wouldn’t end up being very many ghoulies in Ghoulies.
Instead, the 1984 film focuses mainly on a man (Peter Liapis) who inherits a mansion from his father (rocker Richard Des Barres) and ends up conjuring...

With the ability to seemingly pop up anywhere, they made some viewers in the ’80's a little wary of stepping foot in their bathrooms. You still need to keep an eye out for tiny mischief makers, because the little demonic creatures from Ghoulies and Ghoulies II are getting a high-definition upgrade in an upcoming Blu-ray release from Scream Factory that hits shelves on April 21st, and we've been provided with three Blu-ray copies of the double feature to give away to a few lucky Daily Dead readers.

George Romero’s second collaboration with Orion Pictures was curious to say the least, considering how things turned out with their previous effort Monkey Shines. Perhaps Romero was still feeling the urge to scratch that obsessive itch to tackle the themes of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde that inspired him with Monkey Shines and the opportunity to film in his hometown of Pittsburgh might have been an enticing perk. Ironically this time his troubles with Orion were caused by their drastic financial situation and The Dark Half was forced to sit on the shelf for two years before getting buried at the box office.
Romero’s adaptation of Steven King’s novel wasn’t a return to form, but there was definitely a creative spark that was lacking in his previous movie. The Dark Half was arguably his friend’s most personal work and it tackles themes that Romero could certainly identify with,...

Man of the West
Directed by Anthony Mann
Written by Reginald Rose
USA, 1958
Man of the West was director Anthony Mann’s final Western of the 1950s. As such, it stands as something of a cumulative expression of his generic preoccupations and stylistic preferences, preoccupations and preferences that were consistently integrated in a decade’s worth of some of the finest Westerns ever made. What Mann accomplished in this particular genre during a 10-year period is one of the most impressive chapters in American film history, but Man of the West is more than just a summation of the period; it is as good, if not better in many ways, as the extraordinary pictures that came before it.
Taking over the reigns from James Stewart, who had previously starred in five earlier landmark Mann Westerns, is Gary Cooper, another perennial aw shucks leading man. Like with Stewart, Mann upsets this archetypal Cooper screen persona.
