The Matrix franchise has to be one of the greatest sci-fi movie series ever made that has pushed the genre to a new height. But it was never easy to make it. There were a lot of changes in the cast of several characters, including Neo and Trinity. But interestingly, the Wachowskis presented the script in a very different way.
Keanu Reeves as Neo in The Matrix films
Directed by the Wachowski siblings; Lilly Wachowski and Lana Wachowski, The Matrix franchise started on a weird note, at least not what Warner Brothers expected. The duo reportedly presented the script in a format that was beyond the wildest imagination of the studio. No wonder they picked it up after several rejections from so many different studios.

(Welcome to Tales from the Box Office, our column that examines box office miracles, disasters, and everything in between, as well as what we can learn from them.)
"Whoa." This is the famous word uttered by Keanu Reeves in "The Matrix" that has become a meme, one of the actor's most quoted lines, and perhaps the best way to sum up this movie's unexpected impact on cinema when it arrived in 1999. The movie is now immortalized as one of the most heralded and groundbreaking blockbusters of all time. But 25 years ago, this seemed like anything but a sure bet.
From a pair of underdog directors to visuals that had never been pulled off in film before, this is a movie that had just about everything working against it. Every movie is a miracle, but this movie is perhaps the miracle of all miracles. It is — not to overstate the point...

We know what you’re thinking. You like Hellboy but think there’s something missing. Like, maybe a little…mecha.
Well, for those thinking exactly that, Hellboy creator Mike Mignola has heard your cries of woe and answered them.
Mignola has reunited with artist Duncan Fegredo for Giant Robot Hellboy, a three-issue mini-series that promises to be exactly what the title lays out, a Hellboy that is one giant mecha.
Mignola wrote the series while Fegredo, with whom the creator worked on Hellboy: Darkness Calls, Hellboy: The Wild Hunt, and Hellboy: The Storm and The Fury, is handling the art. The comic will mark Fegredo’s first interior work since 2019 as the artist has focused mostly on covers since then. Eisner Award-winning colorist Dave Stewart and longtime Hellboy Universe letterer Clem Robins are also on the book.

This article contains spoilers for The Matrix Resurrections.
It’s been six months since the release of The Matrix Resurrections, the unexpected fourth entry in the cyberpunk saga that brings back Neo and Trinity for one last battle against the Machines. Since it bowed in December, diehard fans have continued to debate the film’s merits. Is it too beholden to nostalgia or is it too apathetic about the franchise’s storied past? Is it too meta or not self-aware enough? Does it earn its cathartic happy ending or is the third act too fan fiction-y? Your opinion of whether you think the film is good or not probably hinges on your answers to these questions. But one thing is for certain: it’s been very nice to have a new Matrix movie to debate about after all these years.
Say what you will about the film’s plot and action sequences,...

For many years, director Ben Wheatley has been one of Britain’s top genre exports from his early supernatural crime-thriller Kill List to the dark comedy Sightseers and the trippy war movie, A Field in England. Last year, he even took on the difficult task of adapting J.B. Ballard’s High-Rise, starring Tom Hiddleston, a crazy movie that also paid homage to another great British filmmaker, Stanley Kubrick. (All of these movies were either written, co-written and/or edited by Wheatley’s long-time silent partner, Amy Jump.)
Wheatley’s new movie Free Fire features an amazing ensemble cast that includes Brie Larson, Armie Hammer, Cillian Murphy, Sharlto Copley, Michael Smiley and more, as it sets up a gun deal that goes wrong and turns into a violent shoot out inside an abandoned warehouse.
The movie shows the amazing skills of Wheatley and Jump with terrific dialogue and some of the most insane action scenes,...

If you’ve kept on top of the great genre films coming from overseas, then you’ll already be familiar with British director Ben Wheatley, whose 2011 film Kill List put him on the map with its mix of crime and the supernatural. He’s made a few other films since then, including last year’s Jg Ballard adaptation High-Rise with Tom Hiddleston, and his upcoming movie, Free Fire, a feature length star-studded shoot-out, which will probably get the widest release of his career.
It makes one wonder when Wheatley might jump over to directing studio movies, and that’s likely to happen with his movie based on Frank Miller and Geof Darrow’s Eisner-winning comic book series, Hard Boiled, which was published in the early nineties by Dark Horse Comics.
Released around the same time as Miller’s Sin City, the comic follows an insurance investigator who finds out that...

Ben Wheatley and Tom Hiddleston are likely to continue the partnership they formed on “High-Rise,” reports Deadline. Warner Bros. is developing an adaptation of Frank Miller and Geof Darrow’s comic book “Hard Boiled” and are looking to have Wheatley direct and Hiddleston star.

Both have been especially busy of late: Wheatley just premiered “Free Fire” at the Toronto International Film Festival, while Hiddleston starred in AMC’s “The Night Manager” miniseries and has “Kong: Skull Island” on the way as well. “Hard Boiled,” a three-issue miniseries that was published by Dark Horse Comics between 1990 and 1992, tells of insurance investigator Carl Seltz, who lives in a dystopian Los Angeles and becomes a RoboCop-like cyborg tax collector with murderous tendencies, because why not.

Director Ben Wheatley is attached to direct a feature film adaptation of Frank Miller and Geof Darrow's action-packed comic book Hard Boiled for Warner Bros. Wheatley is the crazy director who previously brought us films such as Kill List, Sightseers, and High Rise. According to Deadline, he is looking to team back up with his High Rise star Tom Hiddleston for the project.
Hard Boiled was originally published in 1990, and the story focuses on insurance investigator Carl Seltz, who is "a suburban insurance investigator, a loving husband, and devoted father," who learns that he’s really a homicidal cyborg tax collector codenamed Nixon. Nixon is "a berserk, homicidal tax collector racking up mind-boggling body counts in a diseased urban slaughterhouse." He has another psychotic entity within him named Unit Four, who is described as a killing machine and the "last hope of the future's enslaved mechanical servants."
This is a wicked cool story,...

High-Rise actor and director to collaborate on big-screen version of Miller and Geof Darrow’s comic Hard Boiled
High-Rise star Tom Hiddleston is to reunite with director Ben Wheatley for Hard Boiled, an adaptation of the early-90s comic-book series by Frank Miller and Geof Darrow.
Hiddleston is down to play Nixon, a seemingly deranged tax collector in a near-future dystopian Los Angeles. He recently completed work on Thor: Ragnarok (the third in the series) and Kong: Skull Island. Wheatley’s most recent project is Free Fire, an action comedy set in a warehouse, which looks to be his most mainstream film yet.

Following their work together on the recent adaptation of J. G. Frank Miller and Geoff Darrow's Hard Boiled looks like being Ben Wheatley's next project - and Tom Hiddleston could be joining him.
It looks as if director Ben Wheatley is zeroing in on his next project – and that it’s going to involve Tom Hiddleston again. The pair worked together previously on High Rise, and now they’re being linked with a film of Hard Boiled.

It looks like the box office stink of 300: Rise Of An Empire and The Spirit has finally dissipated, as Hollywood is getting back into the Frank Miller business. Thankfully, he’s not getting his hands anywhere near an actual production, but his comic mini-series Hard Boiled might be getting a big-screen adaptation. Not only that, but High-Rise director Ben Wheatley and star Tom Hiddleston might be reuniting for the project, which might be enough to entice people who had been burned by the last few Frank Miller adaptations to give his work another try. That all comes from Deadline, which says the deals are currently being worked out and that we’ll “know soon” if this is really happening or not.

Before we begin, let it be known that despite what you read in the title, Tom Hiddleston and Ben Wheatley (hot off the excellent Free Fire) will not be remaking John Woo’s classic 1992 action film. That would be beyond awesome, but we’re instead referring to Frank Miller and Geof Darrow’s comic book Hard Boiled, which has been snapped up by Warner Bros. as a star vehicle for the aforementioned actor.
Deadline’s got the scoop on this one, and they’re telling us that the studio has recruited Hiddleston and Wheatley to bring the sci-fi story to life on the big screen. If you’re unfamiliar with it, Hard Boiled first debuted back in 1990 and focuses on “insurance investigator Carl Seltz, who learns that he’s really a homicidal cyborg tax collector codenamed Nixon. With a handful of today’s tentpole directors getting plucked from relative obscurity, it often means missing out some of the more interesting fare they might have produced had they not been given the jump at a big blockbuster. With that said, thankfully we’ve had the opportunity to see Ben Wheatley‘s talent grow in the last few years. After jumping on the scene with Down Terrace, Kill List, Sightseers, and A Field in England, he’s recently transitioned to higher-profile ensembles with High-Rise and Free Fire. For his next film, he’s now jumping into studio territory.
According to Deadline, he’ll be working for Warner Bros. on an adaptation of Frank Miller and Geof Darrow‘s comic book Hard Boiled. As both writer and director, he’ll adapt the three-issue series, which debuted back in 1990 and tracked an insurance investigator in a dystopian Los Angeles who comes...

There’s no shortage of sci fi comics out there right now, all jostling for attention with their own unique take on classic concepts; parallel universes, time travel, clones, space travel, etc. There’s new debuts every month and it’s nearly impossible to keep up. A brand new publisher, Afteshock, looks to make their mark with the help of Paul Jenkins, who won an Eisner for his breakthrough 1999 Inhumans mini-series that brought that particularly niche class of superheroes into the spotlight. The artist, Andy Clarke, cut his teeth in the pages of 2000 Ad, which means you know he’s a badass. But greater stars have tried to make their home in the sci-fi comic world but found themselves overlooked. With a title as embarrassingly bland as Replica, can the series hope to do otherwise?...

The Goddamned #1
Writer: Jason Aaron
Artist: rm Guéra
Colorist: Giulia Brusco
Publisher: Image Comics
Price: $4
Jason Aaron is best known as the Man Who Made Thor A Lady. Which is hardly the most transgressive thing he’d written up until that point; his Vietnam War series was about as seriously critical an examination of the topic as comics can be and doesn’t let anyone, least of all the United States military, walk away unscathed. But with a title like The Goddamned, one gets the feeling Aaron might have been pulling punches so far. Well, let’s talk about what The Goddamned is about.
