Good news for exhibition as Lionsgate is delivering two big releases this fall: The Dave Bautista action pic The Killer’s Game on Sept. 13 and the Mel Gibson directed Mark Wahlberg movie Flight Risk for Oct. 18. Again, we can’t be without film product in a marketplace that’s starving for volume.
Meanwhile the Gerard Butler sequel Den of Thieves: Pantera will hit cinemas on Jan. 10, 2025; that title arriving to Lionsgate through its eOne acquistion.
The JJ Perry directed The Killer’s Game, based on the book by Jay R. Bonansinga and adapted by Rand Ravich and James Coyne, follows a top hitman, Joe Flood (Bautista) who is diagnosed with a terminal illness. He opts to take matters into his own hands – by taking a hit out on himself. But when the very hitmen he hired also target his ex-girlfriend (Sofia Boutella), he must fend off an army of assassin colleagues and...

George MacKay in ‘True History of the Kelly Gang.’
Justin Kurzel’s True History of the Kelly Gang will open in Australian cinemas on January 9, just 18 days before its Australia Day premiere on Stan.
The short window and limited theatrical release were virtually inevitable after Stan announced the bushranger epic starring George MacKay, Russell Crowe, Nicholas Hoult and Essie Davis would premiere in summer as a Stan Original.
The major chains are determined to protect the traditional 90 day window and will not screen the film so distributor Transmission Films this week will start booking the title at the independent cinemas that are screening the Netflix productions The King, The Irishman, Marriage Story and The Two Popes and Amazon Studios’ The Report and Brittany Runs a Marathon.
The Netflix titles are screening at the Eddie Tamir family-owned Randwick Ritz Cinemas and Melbourne’s Lido, Classic and Cameo cinemas plus Mel Gibson...

However the proprietor of Randwick’s Ritz Cinemas and Melbourne’s Lido, Classic and Cameo cinemas insists he supports the traditional theatrical window of 90 days.

‘The Professor and the Madman’ Director Sides With Mel Gibson on Film’s Release Following Settlement
“The Professor and the Madmen” director Farhad Safinia is standing behind Mel Gibson’s statement after a long legal tussle over the release of the film.
Though Gibson settled with the production company behind the movie, Voltage Pictures, in April, he said in a statement that it was “unfortunate for all concerned that this film was never finished as written” and denied producers’ claims that he and Safinia walked off set and forced the movie to go over-budget. In a new statement, Safinia backed up Gibson, agreeing with him on the version audiences will end up seeing.
“I would like to add to Mel Gibson’s recent statement regarding ‘The Professor and The Madman,’ ” Safinia wrote. “I echo Mel’s correction of the record that neither of us ever walked off set, nor caused the film to ever go over budget. I would also like to clarify some misreporting saying...

Updated, 4:55 Pm: A California judge has thrown out a copyright-infringement lawsuit filed against Voltage Pictures by the writer-director Farhad Safinia over its upcoming Mel Gibson-Sean Penn film The Professor and the Madman. Safinia had claimed ownership of the copyright after penning a 2007 revision of its original 2001 script.
In granting Voltage’s motion for summary judgment, U.S. District Judge Consuelo Marshall wrote: “The undisputed evidence demonstrates Plaintiff does not own rights in the Screenplay. Plaintiff therefore lacks standing for his copyright infringement claim against Defendants.” Read the ruling here and details of the case below.

Studiocanal Australia and Goalpost Pictures are developing a feature based on the true story of members of the Vienna Mozart Boys’ Choir and their choirmaster who were trapped in Australia during World War II.
Keith Thompson is writing the first draft and Goalpost’s Rosemary Bright will produce.
It’s the second project backed by the Studiocanal Australia Cultivator Fund which launched in March 2017, but has only just been announced following Screen Australia’s decision to provide development funding.
The 20-strong choir, aged 8 to 14, arrived in Australia in 1939. When war broke out they were declared enemy aliens after their final concert in Perth. The choristers were “adopted” by Melbourne’s Archbishop Daniel Mannix, who made them the choir of his cathedral and arranged for their education and board and lodging with local families.
The choirmaster, Dr Georg Gruber, moved into the home of the visit’s sponsor, Henrietta Marsh.

Lawsuit: a claim or dispute brought to a law court for adjudication. That’s how the Oxford English Dictionary defines what Mel Gibson and Bruce Davey have filed against the producers of The Professor and the Madman, a film the longtime Icon Productions partners have been trying to get made for nearly two decades. In a 21-page suit filed today in Los Angeles Superior Court (read it here), Gibson and Davey claim that they had “various contracts” with producer Voltage Picture…...

Mel Gibson is suing Voltage Pictures for "jeopardizing" The Professor and the Madman by failing to honor their co-production deal and allegedly engaging in fraudulent behavior.
Gibson and his producing partner Bruce Davey spent nearly two decades developing the movie, which is based on Simon Winchester's book of the same name about the origins of the Oxford English Dictionary. The actor-producer was set to star in the film, alongside Sean Penn, with Farhad Safinia writing the screenplay and directing. Lawsuit claims breach of contract, fiduciary duty.
Mel Gibson and Bruce Davey’s Icon Productions has filed a claim against the producers of The Professor And The Madman claiming among other things they did not provide a final budget or secure a completion bond.
The lawsuit, filed on Monday with the Los Angeles County Superior Court, has emerged after production on the drama about the origins of the Oxford English Dictionary began production in autumn 2016.
Papers lodged on behalf of Icon Productions accuse Voltage Pictures, Voltage Productions, Christchurch Productions and Voltage head Nicolas Chartier of breach of contract, fiduciary duty, and promissory fraud, among other complaints.
The plaintiffs said The Professor And The Madman, based on the book by Simon Winchester, has been a “labor of love” for Icon and writer-director Farhad Safinia for nearly two decades. Safinia wrote Apocalypto for Gibson and makes his feature directorial debut on Professor.

Happy Feet and Master and Commander scribe John Collee is writing a TV show with Mel Gibson based.on the book The Barbary Coast by Herbert Asbury, who also wrote The Gangs of New York.
The plan is for Gibson to direct the pilot and have a recurring role on the show.
.It.s about the birth of a city,. Collee tells If. .There was a period between the Wild West gangsterism and the settlement of America and the birth of these cities. There was a period in San Francisco when a city was just emerging. A lot of stuff had to be worked out from scratch. Mark Donaldson.
Icon's Mel Gibson and Bruce Davey have acquired the rights to Vc winner Mark Donaldson's 2013 autobiography The Crossroad.
In 2009, Dorrigo native Donaldson became the first Australian to receive the Victoria Cross since 1969, awarded for saving the life of a wounded Afghan interpreter.
Donaldson's father, a Vietnam veteran, died of a heart attack when his son was just 16. Donaldson's mother disappeared, presumed murdered, three years later, when the teenager was studying in Sydney.

Mel Gibson and Bruce Davey’s Icon Productions announced on Thursday they have acquired Mark Donaldson’s novel.
The Crossroad recounts Donaldson’s life story, from troubled teenager to an elite soldier in Afghanistan who became the first Australian to receive the Victoria Cross since 1969.
Donaldson’s split-second decision under heavy fire in 2008 to save the life of an interpreter whom he barely knew changed the course of both men’s lives and enabled him to defeat his own demons.
These are busy times for Gibson, whose Hacksaw Ridge gets its world premiere out of competition in Venice.
Days later, Voltage Pictures will launch sales in Toronto on long-gestating Oed project The Professor And The Madman, which will star Gibson, Sean Penn and new addition Natalie Dormer.

Mel Gibson and Dean Semler on the set of 2006's Apocalypto.
In what will be his first TV credit since 1981's Tickled Pink, starring Jacki Weaver and Max Gillies, Mel Gibson will direct, co-write and star in The Barbary Coast for the Mark Gordon Company.
Kate Hudson and her foster dad, Kurt Russell, the latter of whom starred with Gibson in 1988's Tequila Sunrise, are also on board.
As first reported by Deadline, the series will be "inspired by" Herbert Asbury's book The Barbary Coast, about the birth of San Francisco. Asbury also wrote the book on which Martin Scorsese's Gangs of New York was based..
The Gold Rush in 1849 saw a mass migration of fortune-seekers to San Francisco, and The Barbary Coast will take place in the "unique criminal district" that arose there and lasted seventy years, in what sounds like a west-coast, nineteenth century version of Boardwalk Empire.
