When the early Beatles — John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison, Pete Best, and Stuart Sutcliffe — were first beginning to see success as performers, they nearly destroyed it. Lennon and McCartney took an impromptu hitchhiking trip together. The rest of the band was so upset to have been left behind that they began looking for other groups to join.
John Lennon and Paul McCartney took a hitchhiking trip without their bandmates
After playing shows in Hamburg, Germany, The Beatles returned to Liverpool triumphant. While they were not yet mainstream successes, they were on their way to fame. This all almost fell apart, though.
Lennon invited McCartney on a hitchhiking trip through France and Spain using his birthday money. To go, they ditched several Beatles gigs and seriously angered their bandmates.

In the late 1950s, Paul McCartney watched John Lennon’s band, the Quarrymen, perform at a festival. He was so enamored with the group that he introduced himself afterward — and tried to impress them with his own guitar playing. It worked, and a thoroughly impressed Lennon invited McCartney to join the band. In his first performance, though, he messed up so spectacularly that his new bandmates felt humiliated.
Paul McCartney flubbed a guitar solo when playing his first show with the Quarrymen
The Quarrymen were McCartney’s first-ever band, and he worked hard to ensure his guitar playing sounded good for performances. He began “practicing relentlessly,” even in the car with friends.
“Every damn minute, he would be picking at it until we threatened to toss him and the guitar out of the car,” his friend Charles Roberts said, per the book The Beatles: The Biography by Bob Spitz.

Paul McCartney was the bassist for The Beatles, but he played far more instruments than just the bass guitar. Even on the band’s records, McCartney jumped from instrument to instrument, taking over for his bandmates. He’s a highly accomplished musician, as evidenced by his mastery over dozens of instruments.
Paul McCartney | Michael Ochs Archives/Getty Images How many instruments can Paul McCartney play?
McCartney has become one of the most well-known bass players in the world, but it’s far from the only instrument he plays. He first impressed John Lennon with his mastery of the guitar. While growing up, he also knew how to play piano and trumpet.
Since then, his mastery of different instruments has expanded. McCartney has played over 40 instruments, including harpsichord, harmonica, mandolin, cello, and ukulele. He put his skill to use on his 2020 album McCartney III. He worked on it during the coronavirus...

During an early performance with The Quarry Men, Paul McCartney realized George Harrison should take over his role in the band. Before the future Beatle was a bassist, he favored the guitar. While his skill at the instrument landed him a position in the band, he struggled to make it through his first performance. His moment of stage fright ultimately secured Harrison’s position with The Beatles.

McCartney first met John Lennon after his band, The Quarry Men, performed at a church fest. He introduced himself to the group afterward and played the guitar for them. McCartney impressed Lennon and, shortly thereafter, accepted an invitation to join the band.
McCartney joined the band in rehearsals and proved he was talented enough to play a solo during his first performance with the band.

While Paul McCartney is best known by his real name, the Beatles legend has used many pseudonyms throughout his career. Early in their careers, The Beatles members thought performing using stage names would be fun. They discontinued the names, but Paul McCartney’s fake name inspired became the inspiration for The Ramones.
Paul McCartney once performed under the name Paul Ramon Paul McCartney | David Wolff – Patrick/Redferns
In the early days of The Beatles, they were known as the Silver Beetles. The band consisted of McCartney, John Lennon, George Harrison, Thomas Moore, and Stu Sutcliffe. Ringo Starr joined the group in 1962 and became their permanent drummer. In 1960, the group went on a tour of Scotland with Johnny Gentle. Inspired by Gentle’s stage name, the band created pseudonyms for themselves, trying to sound more like rock stars. McCartney decided to use Paul Ramon as his name for the tour.

In an era when rockstars who had exciting and intimidating names began to emerge, The Beatles kept their real names, except Ringo Starr. Before Starr joined the band, The Beatles temporarily went under different names, with Paul McCartney, John Lennon, and George Harrison creating their own “showbiz names.”
Ringo Starr was the only Beatle who used a stage name John Lennon, Paul McCartney, Ringo Starr, and George Harrison | Mark and Colleen Hayward/Redferns
Ringo Starr joined The Beatles in 1962, becoming the band’s permanent drummer. Starr, born Richard Starkey, was the only band member who used a stage name. The nickname came from the drummer wearing many rings, and it began to stick. In a 1992 interview with Club Sandwich, McCartney said Ringo had previously established himself with the name at Butlin’s Holiday Camp, where several other stars started out.

This past Monday night, I had the honor of attending an Adult Swim: Robot Chicken roller-skating party to celebrate the release of Robot Chicken: Star Wars Episode II on DVD (see the Starlog review here).
Ian David accompanied me and shot some awesome video. We got interviews with Robot Chicken creators/producers Seth Green and Matt Senreich…who were both on roller skates at the time. The band Gym Class Heroes was also part of the tour, providing the hundreds of fans with a live concert to accompany the skating. After being asked to personally take a few laps around the rink with Matt Senreich (how could I refuse?), I quickly learned that just because I could roller-skate like the wind when I was 10 years old, does not mean that I still remember how. I have the bruises and scuffs on my knees to prove it. But, we kept skating,...

The creators of Robot Chicken are horror fans that often display their love of the red stuff in their 15-minute epics of plastic and clay. Last weekend while passing through Winchester, Virginia on Interstate 81, I passed a strange structure just south of the city limits that looked strangely familiar. The large concrete walls surrounding an empty raked rectangle showed the unmistakable outline of a movie theatre. Needing gas, a bathroom, and an IV of coffee, I pulled off of I81 and into the small truck stop community of Stephens City, Virginia. There I saw a sign that confirmed my suspicions, not only was this town getting a new movie theatre, but they were getting the first Alamo Drafthouse to be built outside of the franchise’s Texas home. I would like to welcome Alamo Drafthouse to the East Coast!
If you’ve ever been to a draft house, you’ll understand why this is such a momentous event. Drafthouses are a combination restaurant, bar, and movie theatre, and once you’ve been to one you...

Last weekend, visitors to Fangoria.com, along with our friends and followers on Twitter and MySpace got a window into the world of our Los Angeles Weekend of Horrors. Through our first-ever Live webcast from a Fango event, those that couldn't be there with us in-person were given the rare opportunity to chat Live with some of our favorite horror celebrities, unannounced surprise guests, and up-and-coming independent filmmakers.
While the weekend may be over, clips from the Live event are being made available as a part of our "archive stream", so everyone can re-live the experience.
The guest list for the webcast was immense, with a completely casual, and unscheduled approach, tying into the "You never know who might show up!" tagline. Happy spring holidays everyone! This is a wonderful time of year full of rabbits and celebrated traditions and Halloween. Oh yeah! This weekend I got to celebrate Halloween in April. I traveled to Valley Forge, Pennsylvania for the Eastern Haunters Convention. With my Fango road buddy Ian David in tow (who was super psyched to be recognized by a fan there), we toured haunted houses, checked out the latest development in “scare” technology, sampled FX make-up, and met the people you turn to every Halloween to scare the hell out of you.

April is quickly approaching and so is our convention season. With the Eastern Haunters in Pennsylvania, ICon in Long Island, and Fango’s own Weekend Of Horrors in both La and New York all coming up, the next few months should be especially busy for the Fango crew. As I’m still recovering from February's Toy Fair, I decided now would be a good time to take a belated look at some of the stand outs from the convention.
Let me start by describing what the Toy Fair is. The Toy Fair is a huge convention in New York City where thousands of toy companies gather to show off their upcoming toy lines. Thousands of toy dealers under one roof! I was so excited and couldn’t wait. I realized on the first day that most people there were “business folk” planning huge buys for big companies, wearing expensive suits,...

Back in January, Fangoria Musick took you Inside the Slave Pit with Gwar, giving you an inside look at the band's not-so-secret lair. We taunted you with the prospect of a second video, featuring your true Lords and Masters in their full planet destroying glory, but the video never arrived. Truth be told, Fango's Ian David had been kidnapped by Gwar at the command of manager Sleazy P. Martini. For more on this, and the long-awaited video, click the "read more" below. Be warned, it contains foul language, and could possibly leave a foul stench behind on your computer.
Shortly after we ran our initial story (read it here), Sleazy P. sent Oderus to Ian's NYC flat to shake him down for more money. It seems the band was prepping for thier Fights Of Spring Tour (details here) and needed money for vasoline and mayonaise. Since Ian refused to pay up,...

Our good friend Oderus Urungus just dropped Fango a line to ask if we'd share the news that the Mighty Gwar will be heading out on a U.S. Tour soon. Of course, like all things Gwar-related, we're kind of forced to share the news, as their Manager, Sleazy P. Martini (who must be off today) would show up on our doorsteps demanding "protection money" and hookers if we didn't. What can we say? He's a mercurial man.
The party get's started on May 2nd, as the band arrives to destroy New York after a long trip from their fortress in Antarctica. From there, the Fights Of Spring Tour 2009 continues, wrapping up on May 21st in Lancaster, Pa. Check out the dates in the widget below, where you can click through to pre-order tickets.

While most people are likely snuggled tightly in their beds, the Fangoria crew is working overtime (and overnight) this weekend to bring you exclusive video from the New York Comic-con. Fango's Ian David just sent over a batch of new clips, the first of which you'll find below. In this one, Mistress Bekah chats it up with a sinister scientist that goes by the name of Dr. Von Crank-n-Shaft.
Keep checking back to Fangoria.com for more video from Nycc '09 all day today, and into the week.

The second day of the New York Comic Con has ended, and I have had an exciting and busy day. I began by touring the con with Fangoria TV, including video producer Ian David and Managing Editor Mike Gingold. We ran into Michael Graves, former lead singer of The Misfts, and now star of the new After Dark horror film Perkins 14. We also got a moment to speak with 30 Days Of Night writer and comic book legend, Steve Niles.
I the met up with fashion writer Jess from Fangoria’s Cult Couture. We roamed the con looking for hot new fashion items. We found some great gear and made some new friends in the process.
Back at the Fango booth, Chris and Fangoria intern Sam spread the word of Fango and told everyone all about our three upcoming conventions in Chicago, La, and New York.
Ian David bought us all $5 soft pretzels and $4 sodas.

Long-known as a founding member of the Wu-Tang Clan, rapper/actor Method Man is a life-long horror fan and comic book collector, with a passionate love for the genre. He's jumped in front of the camera for an episode of 2003's Twilight Zone reboot, and appeared as himself in both Scary Movie 3 and the 2006 film Hood Of Horror. Last night, Fangoria's own Mistress Bekah caught up with the man who would be 'Meth at the New York Comic-Con and he shared his thoughts on what Fangoria means to him.

Hey, horror fiends! Mistress Bekah here, fresh from a long but awesome opening day at the New York Comic Con. Still recovering from yesterday’s interview with Takashi Miike, I was overwhelmed by a day full of fun, great fans, and some excellent horror talk.
The Fangoria booth is swinging! We’re giving away lots of free swag, selling some cool items and spreading the gospel of Fango. Most of my day was spent working the room with Fango video producers Bill Hall and Ian David, and along the way I ran into Method Man, my favorite nurses from Fear 2, Bill Zebub, Chewbacca, and Jt Petty (director of the new horror film, The Burrowers). Keep watching the Fango website for interviews with all these people and many more!
Though not quite as manic as San Diego, this con still has all the great events, celebs and booths, but with a slightly more personal touch.

Happy Holiday recovery season, horror fans. It’s that special time of year, when we try to return to the normal routine of life after the chaos the Holidays always provide. For many of us, the Holidays are a whirlwind tour of every town in America, where the most distant of relatives happen to live. I hail from newly blue state of Virginia.
Virginia is a land of history and tri-corner hats. Many an important person did many an important thing and wrote a bunch of important stuff on important yellow paper. The most important of which, according to horror fans, would have to be Edger Allan Poe. While visiting Charlottesville to see a particular cousin whose relation I still question, I learned that somewhere hidden in the mass expanse of the University of Virginia was the dorm room of Poe himself.
With a poorly drawn map on the back...

I hate turkey. I’m not big on that wet, mushy bread called stuffing, and green bean casserole turns my stomach more than any horror movie ever could. Happy Thanksgiving! Ever since I moved away from my parents’ house way back when, Thanksgiving has always represented a time of visiting family, seeing high school “friends” I was never actually that good of friends with when I was in high school, and spending the rest of the time on my parents’ sofa somewhere in between the Law And Order and Matlock marathons. I decided to make this holiday a little different, and instead of the coma-like couch time, I decided to spend my spare moments building my horror movie collection.
Though originally from Virginia, I now live in New York City, home of Fangoria Entertainment. During my time in the Big Apple, I have amassed a formidable horror movie collection spanning genres,...

“Pins and guitar picks are free! And be sure to grab some info on our upcoming conventions!” I must have said these lines at least 800,000 times this weekend. Hey fiends, Mistress Bekah here, manning the Fangoria booth at The Big Apple Comic Con at Penn Pavilion in New York City, and in between the costumed “Venoms” asking directions to the bathroom and fielding questions that go way beyond my comic book knowledge, I thought I would take a second to write a blog.
I love The Big Apple Con. Although smaller than the New York Comic Con, the Bac maintains a personable charm. The celebrities are not isolated into a closed room like some exotic animal, they are actually on the floor hanging out and socializing with us. The vendors are super friendly and welcoming. Comics range from your normal superhero fare to horror to the truly bizarre. Mix in some toys,...

Young writer-director Andy Hurst's "You're Dead" is the sort of film that gives crime movies a bad name. Undoubtedly, it will be sold on the name of Rhys Ifans (the charmingly disgusting Spike from "Notting Hill") and its supposed rock 'n' roll violent humor. But there is very little to engage, amuse, thrill or even entertain audiences here.
The film opened to minimal publicity and uniformly poor reviews in London and looks destined more for a video release where the names of Ifans and John Hurt might look attractive on a video cover. A U.S. release seems unlikely and is probably ill-advised.
On paper, the premise behind "You're Dead" might have sounded like an attractive recipe: Add some "Pulp Fiction"-style violence, mix in a bit of knowing humor with a dash of flash editing and serve it all up with a garnish of bullets, blood and music. The problem is that none of the ingredients gel, and it all feels cliched and half-baked.
The film opens with a police firearms unit entering the cluttered and still-burning remains of a bank. Yes, there's been a robbery and things have gone badly wrong. The initial setup of introducing the characters and the background to the robbery is interesting but only serves to disappoint even more when some of the inept writing kicks in.
The mastermind is old-time robber Maitland (the always interesting Hurt), who has been rescued from jail by wannabe villains Eddie (Ifans) and Ian David Schneider) who, in turn, have been sent a foolproof bank robbery plan that has to involve Maitland.
Most fun comes from the early moments of the robbery as the three villains enter the bank properly dressed as London gents, replete with bowler hats and pin-stripe suits, albeit carrying pistols. From then on, it all gets a bit silly -- trying very hard to be slick and complex but mostly ending up with some dreadful lines and unsubtle editing.
Outside the bank, bad-guy cop Sniffton (Roger Ashton-Griffiths, who happily chews the scenery) has been ordered off the case, and Professor Corner (Barbara Flynn) and her nonviolent intervention unit called Cyclops take over. A moment of humor comes when they play a loud version of "Please Release Me" through massive speakers to disorientate the robbers.
In turns out that Jo (Claire Skinner), one of the bank hostages, is not only a policewoman but has also received a letter advising her to be at the bank from the same person who sent the villains the plans. The next, rather obvious twist is that she is also Maitland's long-lost daughter.
Well, at this point we are all hoping it will be over soon. Throw in a mad killer and a couple more obvious twists and, blessedly, it is.
On the plus side, Ifans is actually very good and does the best he can with the role. Hurt also does all he can, while Skinner (who appeared in Mike Leigh's "Life Is Sweet") makes the best of a poor part. Flynn, a well-known face on British television, smiles her way through her very cliched role and looks plain embarrassed in one flashback sequence.
The film was shot -- and largely financed -- in Germany with a German technical team. That probably accounts for some of the poor London accents of some of the police extras.
