"I would never have done it, if I hadn't hated dances so much." Another whimsical short from animation filmmaker Elizabeth Hobbs, better known as Lizzy Hobbs (she also made the short film I'm Ok a few years ago). Her latest is titled The Debutante, a 9-minute animated short telling an amusing story of a woman in the 1930s. This short premiered at film festivals back in 2022 and has been tour the fest circuit ever since, finally getting an online debut this week thanks to Vimeo. A spirited young woman persuades a hyena from London Zoo to take her place at a dreaded dinner dance being held in her honour... The Debutante is based on a short story written by the artist Leonora Carrington, who was presented at the court of King George V then became a debutante in 1936. It's animated with ink & paint on paper, with some collage & cut-out, captured under a rostrum camera.

No genre is as prolific as horror, so it’s understandable that movies fall through the cracks all the time. That is where this new recurring column, Deep Cuts, comes in. While some movies remain popular and talked about, regardless of age, countless others have faded into the background or obscurity.
Each themed installment of this series will spotlight several overlooked, unappreciated or generally unknown movies from the past — some from way back when, and others from not so long ago — that could use some more attention.
The first edition of this column will look at horror movies featuring wintry settings. It may not feel or look like winter wherever you are right now, but somewhere it’s cold. And with a frosty backdrop, the five winter horror movies here feel more bleak than usual.

Exclusive: Dominic West, who portrays British monarch in-waiting Prince Charles in the upcoming fifth season of The Crown, has told us that season six, which shoots from August, “will be as tumultuous as it gets”, because it will explore the tragic death of Princess Diana.

Ben Wheatley has emerged as one of contemporary cinema’s most dynamic genre filmmakers, thanks to projects such as “Kill List,” “Sightseers,” “High Rise,” and “Free Fire,” and now he’s taking on one of the most famous genre stories ever written: Daphne du Maurier’s Gothic classic “Rebecca.” Backed by Netflix, Wheatley’s “Rebecca” is the first major film adaptation of the novel since Alfred Hitchcock’s 1940 version starring Laurence Olivier and Joan Fontaine. Hitchcock’s adaptation won the Oscar for Best Picture. Can Wheatley deliver a retelling of the same caliber? Netflix’s trailer for the new “Rebecca” below gives moviegoers their first look at what Wheatley has hinted is a new take on the material.
Netflix’s official synopsis for “Rebecca” reads: “After a whirlwind romance in Monte Carlo with handsome widower Maxim de Winter (Armie Hammer), a newly married young woman (Lily James) arrives at Manderley,...

Washington, Feb. 06: A full-size statue of Charles Dickens is all set to be erected in Portsmouth, the city of the author's birth.
The bronze image of the great writer, seated by a pile of books and shrouded in a theatrical drape is made by Martin Jennings, who is regarded as one of Britain's finest portrait sculptors, the Independent reported.
Despite the fact that the late author ordered that there must never be a statue of him in Britain, one will be unveiled in the Guildhall Square in Portsmouth on 6th Feb.
The statue's unveiling will involve a nine-year-old descendant of the author, Oliver Dickens, along with Esha Abedin, a pupil of the local Charles Dickens Primary School, and actors Edward Fox and Joanna David..

★★☆☆☆ Every now and then you suspect that a film gains cult status simply because it's seldom been seen. Take for instance Saxon Logan's Sleepwalker (1984). So few people have sampled this bizarre horror-thriller since its initial release that it was doubted as to whether it even existed at all. But exist it does, and the film - starring Joanna David, Nickolas Grace, Heather Page and Bill Douglas and released by the BFI as part of their Flipside series - is a thoroughly odd concoction. A storm-lashed evening sees a visit by Angela (David) and her husband Richard (Grace) to their friends Marion (Page) and Alex (Douglas).
The seemingly happy couple have just inherited a lonely and dilapidated country house. As the night wares on, however, and tensions between the four individuals reach boiling point, the party meets a shattering and unexpectedly bloody conclusion. Unfortunately, for all the initial intrigue, Sleepwalker...

We already knew that Downton Abbey would return to PBS on January 5. Now we have an official UK air date. Season 4 of the hit period drama will kick off on ITV on September 22 at 9 Pm in what will be the world premiere. As with last year, it will have X Factor UK as a lead-in. The Season 3 debut on September 16, 2012 drew 8.64M viewers, down about 200K from the previous season. However, overall Season 3 was the highest-rated season so far for the series with an average of 9.7M viewers. The show’s return is marked by the absence of Dan Stevens, whose Matthew Crawley character died in the Christmas special last year, and by the lack of Siobhan Finneran, whose O’Brien has also left the show. The rest of the Crawley clan and the below-stairs crew are returning along with Shirley MacLaine as Cora’s mother Martha Levinson. New this year,...

"Downton Abbey" is a smash hit on both sides of the pond, but who came up with the ingenious idea to bring some soapiness to the early 1900s?
In the new issue of Emmy Magazine, executive producer Gareth Neame said he and "Downton Abbey" creator Julian Fellowes developed the idea for the series over dinner. Neame said he asked Fellowes if he'd be interested in revisiting themes of his 2001 flick "Gosford Park," but with fast-paced, soapy stories. And the rest, as they say, is history.
Now entering its fourth season, "Downton Abbey" has become a smash hit with the Season 3 finale breaking ratings records on PBS. Neame said the secret to the show's success is the amount of players behind the scenes or rather, lack thereof -- Fellowes writes every episode by himself.

"Downton Abbey" has reportedly cast Daisy Lewis in a key role.
According to The Mirror, Lewis will play the live-in governess for the daughter of Tom Branson (Allen Leech) and the late Sybill Crawley (Jessica Brown Findlay).
"Daisy will become one of 'Downton's' most prominent characters. She wowed producers in her audition and they are delighted to have secured such a brilliant young actress," a source told The Mirror. Look for the two to start a secret affair.
Lewis' other credits include "Doctor Who" and "Downton Abbey" creator Julian Fellowes' "From Time to Time." Request for confirmation from Masterpiece was not immediately returned.
Lewis isn't the only new face popping up on "Downton Abbey." Gary Carr will portray the show's first black character, Jack Ross, a jazz singer. Other new cast additions include Tom Cullen, Nigel Harman, Dame Harriet Walter, Joanna David, Julian Ovenden and Dame Kiri Te Kanawa.

The Sideways star Paul Giamatti is joining the cast of Downton Abbey alongside his fellow Us actor Shirley MacLaine.

At the end of Season 3 of "Downton Abbey," Lady Mary (Michelle Dockery) became a single mother after her husband Matthew (Dan Stevens) died in a car accident. But is the widow moving on already when the show returns in January 2014?
When asked about a second wedding for Lady Mary in the show's upcoming Season 4, Dockery assured fans that her character "hasn't moved on that quickly" and that she will mourn Matthew properly. "The predicament that Mary's in now is that she does need to find someone eventually," Dockery explained to the La Times. "She has the heir to Downton, she has baby George and she is under pressure to find someone. In that world, women had to find someone. It was all about marriage and who you'd spend the rest of your life with."

It wasn’t so long ago that Downton Abbey creator Julian Fellowes promised fans he would diversify his cast. That dynamic ensemble is a big part of the charm of the British period series. And speaking of charm, I daresay the show’s freshly reported, brand new, Black actor, Mr. Gary Carr has got that in spades.
How does it feel to be the Abbey‘s first recurring cast member of color? I’d imagine it is both exhilarating and nerve wracking. Let’s not forget that Carr is cast in the first season, the upcoming fourth for the popular show, that will have to get along without Lady Mary’s formidable love interest, Matthew, acted by Dan Stevens, who is now dead.

Downton Abbey executive producer Gareth Neame said today that Gary Carr’s addition to the ITV show “will bring interesting twists to the drama.” The actor has most recently been seen in BBC series Bluestone 42 and Death In Paradise. His Downton character, Jack Ross, is a jazz singer described as “a charming and charismatic” young man. The addition marks the first time Downton has had a black character. In the fourth season, he’ll join previously announced new cast members Dame Kiri Te Kanawa, Tom Cullen, Julian Ovenden, Nigel Harman, Joanna David and Dame Harriet Walter. On Season 4 of "Downton Abbey," there's a widower (one Mr. Tom Branson)" and a widow (Lady Mary). Natural soap opera logic dictates the two will have to get together at some point ... right? Wrong!

Dockery's Lady Mary became a single mother in the "Downton Abbey" Season 3 Christmas special after Matthew (Dan Stevens) died in a car accident. Downton Abbey may be returning for its fourth season without a couple of its cast members, but there will be plenty of new faces popping up to make up for their absence. Just recently it was announced a total of at least six new characters would be introduced through out the course of Season 4 as well as one returning character from Season 3. There’s no doubt in my mind these new faces will fit right in to the setting and atmosphere of Downton Abbey and will hopefully contribute to the show’s particular type of drama.
