Scream Factory has announced that they will be bringing the 1981 slasher The Burning (watch it Here) to 4K Uhd this summer – on July 11th, to be exact – and they’re taking pre-orders at This Link. While supplies last, fans who order the 4K Uhd / Blu-ray set through the Scream Factory website will receive an exclusive 18” X 24” rolled poster featuring the original theatrical artwork. The price is $35.99.
The movie is a very cool slasher and I think Scream Factory has chosen an ideal release date for it, as it’s a great one to put on during the summer.
Directed by Tony Maylam, who also crafted the story with Bob Weinstein, Peter Lawrence, Brad Grey, and, unfortunately, Harvey Weinstein, The Burning has the following synopsis: At summer camp, some teenagers pull a prank on the camp’s caretaker, Cropsy. But the joke goes terribly wrong, and the teens leave Cropsy for...

1981 was a huge year for slasher movies. Not only did we get Friday the 13th Part 2 and Halloween II that year, but we also got a ton of others like My Bloody Valentine, The Prowler, Madman, Just Before Dawn, The Funhouse, Night School, Hell Night, Happy Birthday to Me, Bloody Birthday, Graduation Day, the list goes on… and includes The Burning (watch it Here), the movie we’re looking back at with the latest episode in our video series The Best Horror Movie You Never Saw. Check it out in the embed above!

One of the things I love so much about the horror genre is just how many sub-sections there are to it. I mean, if you were so inclined or just in the mood, you could focus your movie viewing leisure time specifically to the supernatural, or to zombies, or perhaps werewolves & vampires, or monsters (oh my)! But for me, I personally like to get seasonal with my horror movies. And so with summer officially upon us, this is the time of year I break out all of my favorite (and obscure) summer slasher horror! We figured we’d give you 6 recommendations so you could get into the summer slasher spirit as well; some of which are well known, some obscure and some recent ones that just warrant another look in the off chance you missed ‘em upon their initial release. The 'Friday The 13th' films are a given,...

Chicago – At its core, “The Burning” is quite clearly an attempt to cash in on the already-waning slasher trend inspired by “Friday the 13th” but it’s a much better film than most of the creatively barren genre. It joins “The Town That Dreaded Sundown” as the latest entries in the increasingly spectacular Scream Factory line of Blu-rays. Both are worth a look.
Rating: 3.5/5.0
“The Burning” plays off the “Cropsey” legend (so brilliantly detailed in the documentary of the same name) of a burned figure in the woods coming back to enact revenge on the kids stupid enough to linger in them. It’s essentially a standard slasher flick (lots of P.O.V. with creepy music, T&A, future stars like Jason Alexander and Fisher Stevens) but there’s a darker tone here, punctuated by the intense violence and makeup effects from the great Tom Savini. It’s before...

In honor of Shout/Scream Factory's new blu-ray special edition of The Burning, I pulled out the review I wrote several years back when MGM (to their sincere credit) released a long-awaited "uncut" version of the cult favorite slasher flick. Let's scan through that to see if I knew what I was talking about...
At first glance, Tony Maylam's The Burning looks like just another Friday the 13th knock-off. At second and third glance, too, actually. That's probably because this 1981 hack-'em-up really Is nothing more than just another Friday the 13th knock-off. (new note: apparently / allegedly The Burning was shot before Friday the 13th, but released after. So maybe I'm dead wrong about that "ripoff" stuff.) But that's not to say it doesn't have its meager charms. First off, it was one of the earliest of the copycats (new note: ahem) to hit the scene, plus it came packing...

Freddy Krueger is king of the singed maniacs, but before he came around, there was Cropsy. 1981′s The Burning gives birth to the lesser known charred killer as a direct answer to the popularity of Friday the 13th. Bob and Harvey Weinstein jumped into the slasher game with this film, and the cult following around the movie has grown ever since. Bolstered by a surprisingly recognizable cast and some great make up effects by Tom Savini, the film is a slasher fan’s dream come true.
The story is fairly straight forward as with most films of this type. A group of teens decide to play a prank on the camp’s maintenance man, named Cropsy, and they accidentally set him on fire and leave him for dead. Several years later, at another summer camp, with the legend of Cropsy firmly in place in local lore, people start dying. Is the story of Cropsy true?...

Scream Factory will be releasing Blu-ray versions of The Burning and The Town That Dreaded Sundown next week, and have provided us with four clips from each film.
The Burning Collector’s Edition Blu-ray™ + DVD Combo Pack: “Gather around the campfire to die! A group of summer camp pranksters get the scare of their lives when they target the camp’s creepy caretaker…and he takes bloody revenge! “Gruesome” (The Hollywood Reporter) and “stomach-churning” (Boxoffice), this terrifying tale is “a brilliant slasher flick [and] gory as hell” (slasherpool.com)!
After a cruel joke goes awry, severely burning him and subjecting him to five years of intensive, unsuccessful skin graft treatments, Cropsy (Lou David) is back at camp…and ready to wreak havoc on those who scarred him! With his hedge clippers in hand, he terrorizes the camp and systematically mutilates each victim. Can a few courageous campers save themselves and destroy...

With guys like Fred Krueger, Jason Voorhees and Leatherface dominating the cinematic slaughter scene (the new Texas Chainsaw killed the competition this weekend), it’s easy for horror fans to forget about the little people. But, we at FEARnet embrace the little people and think that they deserve their moment in the spotlight just as much as the big guns. So, we have put together a list of underrated psychopaths in horror cinema who we would like to thank for their thoughtful contributions to the horror genre.
The Dentist
Corbin Bernsen does crazy quite well. His performance as a psychotic dentist who wants to rid the world of filth is what makes The Dentist as enjoyable as it is. The film itself is just Ok, but Bernsen's performance is great. Watch out for Mark Ruffalo in one of his first feature film roles. The Dentist 2 goes a little off the rails.

Can you say Friday The 13th rip-off? Good, your understanding of the English language is at least sufficient (that‘s my pretend pretentiousness emerging). Now move on from that notion, because while The Burning was clearly inspired by Friday, it’s got some fantastic elements that enable the picture to stand firm on it’s own accord. First off, the “rules” of a slasher are treated with great liberty here. Neither writer Harvey Weinstein nor writer/director Tony Maylam restrict their script maneuvers by insisting upon following the beaten path. Second, the cast is absolutely terrific, showcasing an array of actors and actresses who would go on to build highly successful careers. Third, Tom Savini is on board for the special effects… need I say more on that topic? Add it all up and the result is a kick ass slasher film that could very easily be considered superior to Friday The 13th,...
