‘The Art of Marvel Studios' What If...?, Volume 1, is a new Abrams’ official art book written by Paul Davies, showcasing director Bryan Andrews, Emmy-nominated Disney+ TV series “What If…?”, “that questions, revisits and twists classic moments”, from the ‘Marvel Cinematic Universe’, available August 27, 2024:
“…with each story, ‘The Watcher’ acts as a guide through these various timelines and raises such questions as: What if ‘Ultron’ successfully defeated the ‘Avengers’ and acquired the ‘Infinity Stones’?
“What if ‘Peggy Carter’ was injected with ‘Super Soldier Serum’ instead of ‘Steve Rogers’? What if ‘T'Challa’ became ‘Star-Lord’?
“Filled with striking imagery and a bold color palette, these timelines are brought to life in an animation style that is complementary to the look and feel of the ‘MCU’ …

Near the end of Love Lies Bleeding, someone eats a large black beetle. It happens in a moment of abrupt anger, and it’s bitten into so forcefully that it’s as if they’d done this before––either relieving a shard of stress or intimidating someone. The movie wouldn’t suffer without it, but its inclusion, even for just a few seconds, is one of those added details that locks in everything you’ve seen and understood: the cruel violence, the surrealist transformations, the rage that infects people with the desire to destroy other living things.
This is a Rose Glass movie, which means it packs a killer, multi-faceted punch and resists easy classification. Her second feature after St. Maud is a stylized neo-noir love story, a drama about addiction, an athletic underdog tale, and a bloody thriller compounding genres and narratives that overlap and blend into each other without any wrinkles.

George, meet George. Prince William and wife Kate took turns holding their son George on Sunday as they visited a part of Sydney's Taronga Zoo, named for the little prince. There, George came face-to-face with George the Bilby, a rat-like marsupial, which is also Australia's version of the Easter bunny. And the prince squealed with delight as he excitedly pawed at the fury creature. George, who will be 9 months old on Tuesday, and his parents officially opened the Prince George Bilby Exhibit at the Sydney landmark, which lies across the harbor from the famous Opera House, part of the royal family's tour Down Under.

The BBC's new director general George Entwistle has been pressed to revive '90s soap Eldorado. The BBC One soap was set in the Costa Del Sol in Spain where it focussed on the lives of British expats. Commissioned to rival EastEnders, Eldorado aired thrice a week for 156 episodes between 1992 and 1993, before being axed. Former crew member Paul Davies called for the "triumphant return" of the format in BBC workers magazine Aerial. "Critics would argue it was hubristic, too excessive and the axe deserved to fall prematurely," he continued. "I would argue it was ambitious, ahead of its time and an example of the BBC machine working at its very best. I just hope a channel controller sees the potential and commissions a revisit to Eldorado in the future." (more)...

To judge by some of the biggest blockbusters of the past few years -- and especially the past few weeks -- we're on the verge of an alien invasion.
Accounts of how they'll get here vary. Let's just focus on the movies of 2012. (Spoilers ahead!) If "The Avengers" is to be believed, the aliens will arrive via an interdimensional portal opened by a demigod named Loki using the power of a glowing blue cube called -- paging "A Wrinkle in Time" -- a tesseract. The aliens of "Battleship" -- like those of "Independence Day," "District 9" and countless others before them -- reach Earth in a gigantic, metal spacecraft. According to "Men in Black III," the aliens are already among us, posing in plain sight as extraordinary humans like Lady Gaga. And "Prometheus," being released Friday, claims we're the descendants of an alien race, although once we find that out,...

We're just a few days away from the Oscars, and it's not long before we find out who are going to be the big winners and losers. But at this time of year, it's important not to forget those who slipped through the cracks: there were films released in 2011 that weren't "The Artist," after all.
As we've discussed many times in the past, the Oscars are not necessarily decided on merit. Politics, lack of momentum, no one seeing your film -- all these elements can lead to a seemingly deserving person being overlooked by the Academy. As part of our continuing coverage in the run up to Sunday night, we've picked out ten below-the-line (e.g. directing, writing and technical categories) nods that, while not necessarily more deserving than those who ended up with nominations, deserved to have been in the conversation more. And keep your eyes peeled: a little later,...

Mark Harris analyzes Oscar's screenplay races: "Among original screenplays, it’s probably wise to reserve a slot for 'Midnight in Paris,' since Woody Allen has been there 14 times before and the writers’ branch likes movies that skillfully incorporate fantasy elements — plus, it’s about a writer hanging out with writers. Way to play to your base, Woody! ... And I’d love to believe voters will find room for Kristen Wiig and Annie Mumolo’s 'Bridesmaids' script; it’s been 28 years since an female team was nominated for best original screenplay, and this one is wholly deserving." Grantland "We Need to Talk About Kevin" deserves Oscar consideration for Best Sound: "It's also noteworthy that [director Lynne Ramsay] and her producer are keen to acknowledge their sound designer, Paul Davies. Chicago – Thirty-three years after winning the Best Director Prize at the Cannes Film Festival for his 1978 drama, “Days of Heaven,” maverick filmmaker Terrence Malick has received an even greater honor. His fifth feature, “The Tree of Life,” won the Palme d’Or at the 64th annual Cannes Film Festival, despite mixed reviews and a smattering of boos following its premiere screening.
“Tree of Life” stars Brad Pitt, Sean Penn and Jessica Chastain, and juxtaposes a boy’s coming-of-age during the 1950s with the evolution of Earth itself. The famously shy Malick was not present at the award ceremony, leaving producer Bill Pohlad to accept the prize. At a press conference following the awards ceremony, Jury president Robert De Niro said there wasn’t a great amount of fiery controversy among the judges. “It was a very civil experience,” De Niro said. “Most of us felt clearly that [“Tree of Life”] was the movie.

The 64th annual Cannes Film Festival wrapped up today with the jury awards.
Some awards announcements feel like deflations to robust film festivals but not this year. Major conversation pieces won big, extending the buzz if not adding much in the way of a surprise element that can sometimes send hype spinning in new directions.
First and foremost I, personally, must let out a whoop of joy at the news that Kirsten Dunst took Best Actress. I've long been a champion of her underappreciated gifts. She's one of those rare actresses who is just as skilled at both comedic and dramatic roles and her filmography will eventually have the last laugh over her many detractors. Her "comeback", artistically speaking, probably started with All Good Things this December. She won very complimentary reviews and a last minute Oscar campaign even though the film itself didn't get much attention. [The Film Experience Interview from Kirsten Dunst if you missed it.]

The 2011 Cannes Film Festival wrapped up today and awarded Terrence Malick’s “The Tree of Life” with the Palme d’Or award. Producers Dede Gardner and Bill Pohlad accepted the award. The film stars Brad Pitt, Sean Penn and Jessica Chastain and it’s about a family life played out with visuals of the creation of the universe and dinosaurs. Malick is known for avoiding press and skipped all the public events at the Cannes festival. “[Malick is] infamously shy and low profile, [but] I know he would be thrilled with this,” said Pohlad. Actress Kristen Dunst received the best actress award for her role in Lars Von Trier’s “Melancholia.” The film is about a depressed woman coping with the end of the world. “It’s an honor that is a once-in-a-lifetime thing for an actress,” said Dunst. “I want to thank Lars for giving me the opportunity to be so brave.

I don’t think there is a singular film-maker I’ve found myself having written more about than Australia’s own Dr. George Miller. And now, writing this, I’m still not quite certain of the best way to introduce him, if indeed such a thing is necessary at all. The last of cinema’s thoroughly modern myth-makers – those implicit, anthropological followers of Campbell and Jung, before George Lucas arrived and gunked up the works with his clunky concretizations – and a college lecturer on the indelible powers of those myths on our collectives psyches and their places in modern cinema, in his spare time. The single-handed spokesman for Australia’s burgeoning film industry, and their self-proclaimed answer to our own Steven Spielberg – although, that’s an arguable comparison, I think. Here is a director whose output has equaled one film in the past ten years – and, just one other film...

Fiji Water has long been embroiled in controversy on the island of Fiji, where the company has held exclusive access to a massive aquifer for nearly 20 years--all the while barring the water-starved Fijians from tapping it for their own use. Up until now, Fiji Water has paid an "extraction tax" of just one-third of a cent per liter. But now the Fijian government has upped the ante by charging 15 cents per liter for companies (read: Fiji Water) that extract over 3.5 million liters of water a month. As a result, Fiji Water plans to leave the island--or so the company claims.
John Cochran, President and COO of Fiji Water, explained the company's position in a statement released this week:
"This new tax is untenable and, as a consequence, Fiji Water is left with no choice but to close our facility in Fiji, effective Monday, Nov. 29, 2010. We are saddened that we have...
