Exclusive: Loaded Films founder Eiko Mizuno-Gray and Kinoshita-Kansei Group CEO Masahide Kinoshita have teamed up to launch Tokyo-based production company, Kinofaction, which aims to focus on minority Japanese co-productions.
The new outfit will take a minority stake in feature film projects that have significant Japanese elements and/or talent involved. It is actively seeking projects initiated outside of Japan with strong festival and commercial potential.
Loaded Films, the production company founded by Mizuno-Gray and Jason Gray, will continue to separately produce a slate of projects developed in-house, including Renoir, the next project from Plan 75 director Chie Hayakawa, which Goodfellas has boarded for sales.
Kinofaction already has several projects on its slate, including Poland-set The Excursion, from writer-director Kei Ishikawa, whose credits include Venice titles Traces Of Sin (2016) and A Man (2020). His new project is a co-production with Poland’s Lava Films, which is here in Cannes with competition title The Girl With The Needle.

When you watch Bungo Stray Dogs it’s easy to get sucked into the super abilities, surprising plot twists and charisma of the characters. Many of those characters are loose allusions to different literary figures from around the world such as F. Scott Key Fitzgerald and Osamu Dazai. It makes sense that an anime series that makes nods to various authors and poets would have quality lines sprinkled throughout; whether it be a character sharing their unique life philosophy or just waxing poetic because it sounds cool and profound. I may not have captured all of them, but here’s a list of some of the best quotes from Bungo Stray Dogs ! Atsushi Nakajima Quotes “People need to be told they’re worthy of being alive by someone else or they can’t go on.” Before Atsushi joined the Armed Detective Agency, he was isolated and neglected in an orphanage...

Voices That Bring Anime to Life: Celebrating the Best Anime Voice Actors of All Time ( Photo Credit – IMDb )
Japan takes its anime voice actors very seriously to the point where they have special voice acting academies and schools to train them to master their art completely. This is exactly why these professionals are so versatile and have such natural, golden voices. In fact, a large number of avid anime fans prefer watching anime subs rather than anime dubs exactly because of this. Some Dub actors tend to exaggerate and overact as a way to compensate for the inconsistency in translations and syncing. Native voice actors retain the ‘authenticity’ that dubs lack.
The authenticity of the subs is attributed to the voice actors’ talent and how natural they are with their jobs. Here are some of the best Japanese anime voice actors of all time.

“A second life in another world with cute girls by your side and video gamey powers–sounds like a dream, right? Not so for a certain melancholy author, who would quite literally rather drop dead. Honestly, all the fantastical adventure is just getting in the way of his poetic dream of finding the perfect place to die. But no matter how much he risks his hide, everything seems to keep turning out okay. Will our terminally depressed hero find a new lease on life in this cheerfully bleak isekai comedy?” (Seven Seas Entertainment)

Osamu Dazai, born Shuji Tsushima, is one of the most well known figures in Japanese literature, with several hit novels, including “The Setting Sun” and “No Longer Human”. The latter, his last work released posthumously after his suicide, is considered to be his crowning glory and stands as the second highest-selling Japanese book of all time. Dazai himself had a very eventful life, dotted with his alcohol abuse, womanising ways and several suicidal attempts, all of which have been the inspirations of many representations in various forms of written and performed art, including films, manga, anime and more. The latest to tell his story is “Helter Skelter” director Mika Ninagawa. “No Longer Human”, as its Japanese title “Osamu Dazai and the Three Women” suggests, follows the latter part of his life and the three key partners that not only influenced some of his best works but also led to his ultimate demise.

The horror genre within manga, and by extension Japanese art, has had a long history dating back to the early 17th century with the release of the Tokiwa Scrolls, believed to be painted by Iwasa Matabei. The twelve part collection depicted graphic violence, murder and nudity. However, the art style of ukiyo-e embracing more graphic content did not really become common until the 19th century. Regardless, it can be said that these early depictions were used to both educate and entertain and ingrained a deep fascination with the macabre that is spirited in today’s mangakas who thrive in the horror genre.

Even though the erotic images – including the work of Nobuyoshi Araki – were the main attraction of New Self, Weekend Super, and Shashin Jidai, these magazines also featured articles about various underground cultural phenomena and the work of distinguished writers like Genpei Akasegawa and Shigesato Itio. Now, With Tominaga’s adaptation of Suei’s biographical essay “Suteki na Dainamaito Sukyandaru” (1982), we finally get a chance to explore the life of one of the most controversial editors of the eighties.

One of the lesser-known anime masterpieces, “Blue Literature” is an adaptation of six modern classics of Japanese literature.
The first one is “No Longer Human” (Ningen Shikkaku) by Osamu Dazai. It tells the sad story of a lost and alienated high school student, who eventually embarks on a trip entailing self abuse, drugs, and adultery, instigated by his inability to understand those around him. This week’s Reviewing the Mail begins with a long-distance shout-out to Ellen Wright, who started at Wiley the first week I did, but has since moved up and on to working in Publicity with the fine folks at Orbit Us. My pipeline of Yen Press titles — Yen being the manga arm of Orbit — had dwindled recently, probably because I hadn’t reviewed many of their books in that same period [1], but I now have a batch of them here, and I hope they’ll continue.
