Exclusive: Italian production and distribution stalwart Lucky Red is teaming with local pubcaster Rai on drama series Belcanto, about the roots of opera in Italy.
The ambitious drama is set to star Vittoria Puccini (The Trial) and be directed by Carmine Elia (The Sea Beyond). Newen Connect will be handling international sales.
We understand the series is aiming for a budget in the €15M range. Additional casting is underway, including for two more prominent actress roles.
Belcanto was first pitched at Berlin’s co-pro series market last year. Co-created by Mariano Di Nardo, Antonio Manca and Federico Fava, the drama is set in 1798, as 14-year-old Carolina, her 17-year-old sister Antonia and their mother Maria seek refuge in the city of Milan after stabbing their violent father to death.
The elder sister dreams of becoming a renowned singer, much as her mother once hoped for when she was the girl’s age.

Hollywood star Ingrid Bergman is featured on the official poster of the 68th Festival de Cannes
Bergman was a modern icon, an emancipated woman, an intrepid actress, and a figurehead for the new realism. She changed roles and adoptive countries as the mood took her, but never lost sight of her quintessential grace and simplicity.
This year’s poster captures the actress, who worked with Alfred Hitchcock, Roberto Rossellini and Ingmar Bergman, and starred opposite Cary Grant, Humphrey Bogart and Gregory Peck, in all her beauty, her face lit up by a calm serenity that seems to herald a promising future.
Liberty, audacity, modernity – values also shared by the Festival, year after year, through the artists and films it showcases. Ingrid Bergman was President of the Jury in 1973.

Chicago – Though you probably don’t know his name, Christopher McQuarrie’s involvement might sell you on paying to see “The Tourist” even more than “A”-list stars Angelina Jolie and Johnny Depp. After all, McQuarrie is the writer behind 1995’s Oscar-winning magnum opus by the name of “The Usual Suspects”.
Rating: 1.5/5.0
While these two films both embarked on the pursuit of conning you into one belief and then twisting you into another, “The Usual Suspects” masterfully succeeds in every fiber of its being while “The Tourist” can’t even play ball in the same league. And to even consider “The Tourist” as Hitchcockian would be a crime of blockbuster proportions bestowed upon the true man of mystery.
Though McQuarrie’s words might be found somewhere in this Angelina Jolie model fest, the ink from its two other writers (Florian Henckel von Donnersmarck and Julian Fellowes) clearly snuffs away McQuarrie’s natural skill.

Senior citizens having sex, a rock star deciding to kill himself, a clueless Italian bungling his way through a Christmas vacation -- these are the plot lines of top local hits in key European territories.
Although such American films and franchises as "Transformers," "Ice Age" and "Mamma Mia!" can be counted on to bring in big bucks abroad, local fare can surprise on the upside, even occasionally besting U.S. competition at the boxoffice.
France's outsized comedy "Welcome to the Sticks," for example, managed to lure more Gallic moviegoers than even Johnny Depp in his latest "Pirates of the Caribbean" saga. A Scandinavian crime print trilogy, "Millennium," has unleashed a multiplatform campaign that will see it exploited across theatrical, books, film, DVD, TV and merchandising.
Below is a rundown of recent local favorites and how they increasingly are making moolah by crossing national borders, licensing remake rights or optimizing their franchise potential.
